Am I the only one who thinks Fentress is getting to much playing time?

Don't be hating on my Nashville peeps homie!

But to me we rotate players in the secondary too much and they can't find a rhythm!

NEW BLOG IS UP!

VA Cane

Football is the greatest game ever invented, and I love winning at a high level. I was fortunate to do so in HS, average in college and pretty successful in coaching.

I love worship the game, but if it comes down to choice of a school educating people and putting them in the world and making it better (which is one of the ideas) or winning in football, I would highly prefer the former over football. Our institutions are to educate people and teach them worldly ideas, not screen passes and tackling.

I think we have pretty smart players now; at one time I doubt a lot of former players could have gotten in, much less do the work......they would have had to go north to the sanatorium of mentally challenged thieves and rapists called FSU. I think it is important the school keep striving to produce useful educated members of society who make the world a better place through service; if the team does well then great, but it is not the primary purpose of any college. If guys do not want to be educated, all the pro leagues should open up the restrictions and let anybody play who can make it.

Ohio_Cane

Shalala started June 1, 2001.

Coker hired Jan 31, 2001.

Go Canes

I believe Shalala didn't start til June of 2001.

Wasn't Coker already the coach by then?

Golden said receiver Rashawn Scott (shoulder/clavicle) has been making progress, but isn't expected to play this week.

j.w.

Change is a good thing, IMO. Never met Shalala (although she did walk right past me at the Emerald Bowl), I did meet Foote twice and didn't like him at all. I got her letters and email like everyone else, and I admired her tenacity on many issues. But I also thought she was an astute politician who micromanaged a lot, and knew exactly what to say with respect to athletics to make sure we all thought she cared more about success than she really does.
She did lead UM as it attained new heights academically, yet she also chose to buy that hospital that looks more and more like an albatross every year. Campus stadium was finally built for basketball, women's sports expanded, yet our flagship programs have been mired in mediocrity as of late, and we seem to have developed a reputation for being cheap on the hires. Fundraising for the University took off so UM clearly knows what they are doing, yet we haven't been successful for athletic fundraising. And she did pilot us through the NCAA mess, but the scandal happened on her watch, and nobody ever questioned that she was in charge of everything when the scandal was occurring.
On a personal level as an alum, UM never visits Northern CA, which they did early in her tenure and under Foote. They never ask for reps at college fairs like they used to do. Their local reps are ineffective and don't really try to schedule anything that someone over 28 would be interested in attending. So, under her leadership, I do feel a lot less connected to UM.
Bottom line is that I've got mixed feelings on her. I thank her for what she has accomplished, but I am looking forward to new leadership.

TonyCane

As far as football, without her leadership and experience, we come out of the other end of the Shapiro mess much differently. Hie easily people forget what her leadership and willingness to fight did for us there. Instrumental in saving the program. Handled it PERFECTLY.

Posted by: Lurker | September 08, 2014 at 12:57 PM

Agreed, and not just there. I remember when the media was pig-piling us in 2006. Theisman was calling for us to call off the season for the FIU-started fight. Shalala instituted a no-tolerance policy for fighting, but also resisted the urge for player dismissals and spoke out against the media feeding frenzy. She wasn't going to throw athletes under the bus just to look good to the press.

@NBCSports: Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney has torn meniscus, will need surgery and miss 4-6 weeks, @ProFootballTalk confirms

Posted by: Go Canes | September 07, 2014 at 08:13 PM

Medical question...when NBA players tear a miniscus I have seen a variety of recovery times. Westbrook's was equivalent to that for Clowney. Derick Rose however tore his meniscus in November and was out for the rest of the season.

I read in re: to Rose that one option is a meniscus removal, which leads to a shorter recovery time. Wade had this and now regrets it. Rose had the tear replaced and thus the longer recovery time.

I just wonder if Clowney is doing himself a long-term disservice if he is having it removed.

SinisterCane

Back from lunch

First off this a sports blog for the Hurricanes, not a research/medical/fund raising blog, also if she raised so much money "3 billion" for the Miami, then why so cheap when it's time to hire a HC? Donna has a long list of accolades which is going to look great for her future endeavors but with regard to hiring the HC to produce and maintained Hurricanes Football she has failed 3x in a row.

Lurker

She destroyed Emmert.

Yup, you could almost feel Emmert's head snap back when she landed the perfectly timed haymaker about all their improper conduct.

Timing, tone of response and not so veiled threats about what was coming if they didn't back off were a thing to behold.

I respect her first as a person who has accomplished incredible things. My niece I raised graduated from UM and when I met her I was impressed. She is an incredible woman; I hope many other great women like her get an opportunity to lead. She is very intelligent and has helped many other find success in many areas of life.

I know a lot of you are going to say she was horrible for Athletics. And, you're wrong. Period.

StateOfTheU.com @TheStateOfTheU · 25m

Apart from the AMAZING THINGS we've done and how far we've come as a University, she's spearheaded the fundraising for all the improvements

StateOfTheU.com @TheStateOfTheU · 24m

IF YOU RECALL, she took a very, VERY hardline stance against the NCAA in the wake of the Shapiro scandal. But she doesn't care, right?

StateOfTheU.com @TheStateOfTheU · 23m

If you equate losing games on the field of play with her leadership, then you need to get your head examined.

I get your anger at the fact that this isn't 2001 and whatnot for the Football team, but stop disparaging President Shalala.

StateOfTheU.com @TheStateOfTheU · 21m

She's done great, great, GREAT things for #TheU. And, as an alum, I am proud that she was President while I was in college and after.

dj moonbat

Donna Shalala is a good university president. If I were an alumnus, I would be sad to see her go.

But I'm not an alumnus; I'm a townie. My connection to UM is through its football team, and to a lesser extent its baseball team. Whether the classes are small, the professors are good, the research wins grants...none of that really matters to me.

As a football fan, I could stand for a little less Shalala-type management.

UMike

She will be missed Im sure.

UMike

I think its obvious Shalala cares about football, I just dont think its her #1 priority to see the football team back on top.. and there is nothing wrong with that.

30CINCO

Was it Shalala who implemented the Life-time Scholarships for the student athletes?

VA Cane

Edge and Gore are great players great guys. Gore doing that on those knees....what a fighter never quits. Edge has donated money, reaches out to his community....both are sure HOFers no way around it.

Clinton good but not in their class as a back....nice guy got his autograph at VT once....he was very cool.

How about this? Losing sometimes is never cool. I HATE to lose......we try not to.

Terrance Sullivan

And from an athletic perspective signed off on millions of dollars in athletic facilities upgrades and new athletic buildings but the haters say she didn't care about football and athletics that statement is embarrassingly laughable unfortunately to many haters are drinking that Kool Aid.

UMike I said that in response to another post, since the doomsday crew feel the need to include me in anything negative they say.

I later said it was a solid not spectacular win.

Don't know why I bother to engage some on here. Pretty much done with that.

Let's just win and improve Saturday and get ready for a huge game against Nebraska (Unless we beat them then it won't be huge. Huge games are only the ones we lose...)

Lurker

It doesn't even matter what you call that scrimmage, uh I mean game, on Saturday.

Work on stuff, work out kinks, try a few new wrinkles and get out of there without any major injuries. With 2-3 days to prepare. Mission accomplished.

This week will more like a prep for a real game. But still another win and them the following week is the money week.

So I don't care if they win by 2 TD's or 10. Keep improving and get your asses ready for Nebraska.

Where exactly did I give him props?

By calling it a solid but unspectacular win?

SinisterCane

From what I've seen Fentress is playing very well and deserves the PT he is getting

UMike

UpNorth.. if he is balling its cool.. just saying there seems to be more talented guys than him. But if he is making plays then more power to him. Just seems odd

UpNorthCane27

Umike, i have no issues with Fentress getting PT more than others if he's making open field tackles like the one he did this past game. If you ask me on that one play he made more of an impact than Jimmy Gaines did in 4 years here lol.

UMike

Go Canes.. after Golden's comments were posted the topic turned to those comments.. and as usual you reach out and find something totally unrelated to give Golden props while not at all addressing the topic of discussion.

Go Canes

I'm not defending Golden, I just find it humorous that this topic has incited such furor while the blog was dead yesterday after we won.

Whether we were supposed to do it or not there were a lot more negative posts today over a comment than there were positive ones after a solid but unspectacular win.

Just funny to me.

UMike

In truth, going back to the bowl game we have real issues....

UMike

If you are referencing AQM, it seems it was about the fight with his roomate

Ohio_Cane

30, I'd be holding him out until investigation is completed.

30CINCO

Hypothetical Question, see scenario below:

Student Athlete A, we'll call him Ali.

Ali is possibly having some academic issues that is being investigated by his schools academic dept. Should the investigation deem Ali is not eligible to play this season, Ali will need to sit out the entire season.

If Ali plays in ANY game, he will lose the opportunity to to red-shirt the suspended season if he plays in 1 snap.

If you were Ali's coach, would you risk playing him early or would you wait for the investigation to be completed and hold him out until then?

Forget the fact that so far we've played against a defense that lost numerous starters, a scheme, and a coordinator...plus a team that's not an FBS team. And we're dead last in the NCAA in third down conversions.

None of that matters; everything's going according to plan. Don't worry that this year's 'Canes are still no good. It's not a money year.

Go Canes

What are our 3rd down numbers on d?

Anyone know?

Ohio_Cane

Maybe I'm wrong or confused, but I'm pretty sure I've even heard NFL coaches and announcers talk about playing a 3rd and long like you're setting it up to go for it on 4th down.

Example: 3rd and 8, run a play that should get U 5-10 yards so if U don't get the 8, U know you're going to have 4th and short in those areas where it's too long for a FG and too short for a punt.

No?

KYcane

I wonder if they consider third down a 'money down' on DEFENSE...

So let me get this right.. your 3rd down play calling is impacted by the option of 4th down? GTFOH lol.. you call 3rd down plays to get a 1st down.. not hoping to get you closer so you can for it on 4th lol

Posted by: UMike | September 08, 2014 at 07:25 AM

That's got to be great for keeping your sense of urgency in the huddle:

"Got to make sure we convert this third and long!"

"Dude, relax. It's not like this is a *money* down."

KYcane

The Hurricanes are an NCAA-worst 3 for 23 on third downs through two weeks:
"So sometimes how we play third down is impacted by whether or not we believe we should go for it on fourth down."

This is one ridiculous statement, now another category we are cellar dwellers in.
