What was left of the 2009 OLine class graduated last year.

What's left of the 2010 class graduates this year.

We lost 40% of our starting OLine last year...Henderson & Linder.

If Flowers leaves, we lose 60% of our starters this year...Feliciano,Flowers, & McDermott.

So no, I don't believe Al Golden is stockpiling O-Linemen "just cuz".

TonyCane, what say you?

Posted by: CaneRock | October 28, 2014 at 10:48 PM

He's stockpiling because the actual depth is somewhat thin, and will be thinner after this season concludes. Miami entered the season with
eight linemen:

Johnathan Feliciano (2010), Shane McDermott (2010), Taylor Gadbois (2012), Daniel Isidora (2012), , Ereck Flowers (2012), Alex Gall (2013), Hunter Knighton (2013), and Sonny Odogwu (2013)

Feliciano and McDermott depart after this season. If Flowers leaves that gives us just five.

That's why Golden has five commitments at OL at present, including two 4 star players.

Terrance Sullivan

See Y'all at Sun Life on Saturday.

^^^^^^^^^^

Yes, yes, and yes. A couple more might not hurt either. Line play injuries are common and mostly serious. As I've said, you can't have too many. A good number is 10 or more

Also, great article. Kelly deserves our support and then some.

I've heard. Lol

Dude on a Pale Horse

I didn't realize we were so low on actual numbers. 2 centers, 5 tackles and 5 guards is about the bare minimum. I figured with only 2 graduating and 1 maybe going early 5 was the max we'd bring in. Golden always says he likes to be able to play at least 7.

1. Gadbois
2. Isadora
3. McDermott
4. Linder
5. Darling
6. Odogwu
7. Knighton
8. Gall

All of these guys SHOULD be ready to play next year so I guess I stand by my statement that 7 is too many for 1 class.

CaneRock

Feliciano and McDermott depart after this season. If Flowers leaves that gives us just five.

Posted by: TonyCane | October 28, 2014 at 11:34 PM

I think it's 7, didn't we get 2 late signees this year?...Joe Brown, & the kid from Clay County...

Dude on a Pale Horse

And I think Flowers is a returner. 75/25. Just a gut feeling.

CaneRock

I think Flowers returns also, TD. He has the physical tools, but like somebody else said, He's made too many mental mistakes.

Dude on a Pale Horse

So if we have 8 or 9 or 10 returning next year, and had 7 committed that mean we'd have the OL accounting for 17 of our 85 scholarships. 7 freashmen at OL is a little crazy. Almost half of your OL would be freshmen too. I guess you could work the best through and find the others homes somewhere else. But we need at a lot of other spots too.

Dude on a Pale Horse

He could be drafted as high as the second round now CR, simply because the NFL considers tackles a premium position and his talent is obvious. But if he returns and perfects his game he can be a top 10 pick.

TonyCane

Ahh...you're right. Filtered out the 2014 players. We actually have twelve on the roster:

Johnathan Feliciano (2010), Shane McDermott (2010), Taylor Gadbois (2012), Daniel Isidora (2012), , Ereck Flowers (2012), Alex Gall (2013), Hunter Knighton (2013), Sonny Odogwu (2013), Kc McDermott (2014), Nick Linder (2014), Trevor Darling (2014), Joe Brown (2014)

So even if Flowers leaves, along with Feliciano and Shane McDermott we would still have 9, which then increases to 14 next season.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Flowers
Isadora
Linder
McDermott
Gadbois

Left to right next year?

Dude on a Pale Horse

Posted by: TonyCane | October 29, 2014 at 12:01 AM

15 by your numbers because I think we now have 6 committed OL. 16 if Flowers comes back. Not the worst number in the world but would be super freshman heavy. I think we should take the best 5, 6 if they're all studs.

Ohio_Cane

Golden would prefer to be able to rotate 10 OL comfortably. Add in RS guys and we will be taking 6-7 OL if we can.

Don't forget possible attrition when figuring returning numbers. Think Bunche from this year...

Dude on a Pale Horse

What about CBs?

Dude on a Pale Horse

Where are the floods? I'm gonna have to start doing a rain dance over here 'cause we're in a drought!

Ohio_Cane

A couple reasons:

1. We started our season off bad

2. Most of these kids (real good ones) are focused on getting their HS teams to states.

3. Most of the real good ones (4-5*) dont decide this early. They decide at all star games and on NSD.

Dude on a Pale Horse

I thought most of the 4 & 5 star guys are committed? Just not to us...

raizecane

Hurricanes lose left tackle Ereck Flowers to knee injury

That “next-man-up mentality” that University of Miami football coaches and players constantly promote is about to be tested more than ever this season as the Hurricanes prepare to host North Carolina on homecoming Saturday.

Hurricanes left offensive tackle Ereck Flowers will miss at least one game – and possibly the rest of the season – with a knee injury, the Miami Herald learned Tuesday through a source familiar with the situation.

UM offensive coordinator James Coley, calling Flowers “such a good player” and “so smart,” confirmed the news without specifying the injury, saying the junior was injured late in the game Thursday night at Virginia Tech.

The Hurricanes (5-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who rushed for 364 yards in their victory at Virginia Tech and have gained 1,077 yards the past two games, meet the Tar Heels (4-4, 2-2) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. UM already lost former starting right tackle Taylor Gadbois and backup right tackle Kc McDermott for the season to knee injuries Sept. 27 against Duke. Those injuries forced veteran left guard Jon Feliciano to move to right tackle, where he has excelled.

Taking Feliciano’s place at left guard has been true freshman Nick Linder, who has adjusted exceptionally well.

Now, senior Feliciano is expected to move to left tackle to replace Flowers, and Trevor Darling – a 6-5, 310-pound true freshman and former four-star recruit out of Miami Central High – is expected to move to right tackle.

Darling has played sparingly in four games this season, including the four plays in which he replaced 6-6, 324-pound Flowers, who plays the most important spot on the line as the blind-side bodyguard for quarterback Brad Kaaya.

“I remember I was calling the play,” Coley said of the VT game, “and I was hearing over the headphones, ‘We need a tackle! We need a tackle!’ I saw Trevor just spring out there out of the corner of my eye. I said, ‘I can’t believe this guy is out here.’ I don’t even know if he stretched. It was fourth quarter. It was cold. And then he went out there and just mixed it up with the guys.

“He’s tough. I like him.”

Flowers is regarded as one of UM’s best linemen – if not the best. The former Miami Norland High standout has started 25 games for the Canes, including the past 21 at left tackle.

UM coach Al Golden did not elaborate on the injury Tuesday at his weekly news conference, but said he felt badly for Flowers and indicated he would know sometime Wednesday about the severity of the injury and how much time Flowers will miss.

“It’s tough,” Golden said, because we don’t know if, uh, you know. … Doc seemed to think it was an old injury that just, I don’t know how to say it, flared up. But they’re going to take a good look at it [Wednesday] and see what’s up.”

The other tackles who will be used as reserves, both with minimum experience, are 6-6, 312-pound junior Hunter Wells and 6-8, 312-pound redshirt freshman Sunny Odogwu.

According to UM, Wells has played in three games this season and Odogwu in five, primarily on special teams.

Other reserve linemen include freshman Joe Brown and sophomore Alex Gall.

Still at their original spots are senior center Shane McDermott, older brother of Kc, and sophomore right guard Danny Isidora.

The Canes rank 39th of 125 FBS teams nationally in sacks allowed, giving up 13 for the season.

“You definitely can feel he’s not out there,” senior defensive end Anthony Chickillo said of Flowers. “He’s a great player, brings a physicalness to the O-line. Guys are really going to have to step up.”

Added senior receiver Phillip Dorsett: “It’s definitely a devastating blow for us, but you’ve got to have a next-man-in mentality. Whoever is behind him, whoever has the chance has to step up. We know they’re going to prepare this week as hard as they can and we’re going to help them.”

The Hurricanes are in the midst of an ACC Coastal Division race. After UNC, Miami will face Florida State at home on Nov.15, Virginia in Charlottesville on Nov. 22 and Pittsburgh at home in the regular-season finale Nov. 29.

'Canes LB Jermaine Grace coming on strong
By Christy Cabrera Chirinos,
Sun Sentinel

It’s been a solid month for Hurricanes linebacker Jermaine Grace.

The sophomore was named the ACC Co-Linebacker of the Week after Miami’s 30-6 win over Virginia Tech, a game in which he recovered two fumbles, had four tackles and recorded a sack for the second consecutive game.

His performance in Blacksburg came after he had a career-high eight tackles in Miami’s win over Cincinnati earlier this month and coaches say Grace, the Hurricanes’ fourth-leading tackler with 36 total stops this season, is starting to make the progress they’ve wanted to see from the former Miramar High standout.

“His preparation has been better, his maturity and poise has been better, his confidence and being more vocal in the meeting rooms, to exhibit his confidence, to show that he knows what he’s doing and that he’s confident and that he can bring that to the game. All of those things are starting to happen,” Hurricanes coach Al Golden said. “So from that standpoint, he’s embracing that process and hopefully, he can continue to do that.”

With Miami facing North Carolina and its up-tempo offense led by quarterback Marquise Williams, who leads the Tar Heels with 497 rushing yards and has thrown for 2,035 yards, the Hurricanes are going to need Grace to continue his solid play of late.

“He’s going to play a pivotal role here because there are so many space plays and we do need his ability to change direction and break on balls and his speed in the game,” Golden said. “He’s going to be a big factor this week, so hopefully, he can just stay focused and get better every day."

*Miami unveiled a list Tuesday of the players it hopes to redshirt this season, a number that could go as high as 16 and would be the highest since Golden arrived in Coral Gables.

Some of the players, including offensive lineman Kc McDermott, kicker Matt Goudis, receiver Rashawn Scott, and safety Rayshawn Jenkins are hurt, while others like Joe Brown could be pressed into duty if needed.

Other players on the list included Earl Moore, Ryan Moore, Jelani Hamilton, Terry McCray, Michael Smith, Darrell Langham, David Njoku, Tyler Grimsley, Demetrius Jackson, and Malik Rosier.

Defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad, who is currently suspended from UM, is also on the list.

*Miami’s win in Blacksburg last week put the Hurricanes back into a chaotic Coastal Division race, but Golden pointed out Tuesday his team can’t afford to get caught up in any of the standings yet, not with four ACC games still ahead on the schedule.

“It’s one game at a time. We’re really not worried about anything else,” Golden said. “North Carolina is the most important game of the season because it’s the next one. They’re playing really well right now and scoring a lot of points and they just came off their best defensive effort. That’s it. That’s all of our focus. We can’t worry about anything else if we don’t take care of what we need to take care of and that starts today with preparation.”

*Former Hurricanes greats Jerome Brown and Russell Maryland are set to be added to Miami's Ring of Honor during Saturday's game against North Carolina. They will be only the 17th and 18th members of the Hurricanes' Ring of Honor.

NCAA the biggest sham and fraud I've ever seen just get a pass day after day, year after year.

Lurker

The overwhelming lesson the NCAA is this:

Do things the right way, cooperate, self-report, and support the status quo of their rule enforcement: get punished like a M'fer (Gurley, the U, etc)

Lie, deny, deflect, stonewall, hire a bunch of lawyers, don't cooperate, and fight tooth and nail ( Manziel, Jameis, etc): get barely a slap on the wrist.

The NCAA is basically encouraging non-cooperation. They are basically dead.

Jim Kelly already sounds emotional about Miami's #KellyTough tribute this weekend. "Keep praying for me. It definitely helps me," he said.

July 22nd:

Colleges have neither stopped nor gotten enough of Michael Jackson.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound defensive back from Spain Park High School picked up his first offer from a Southeastern Conference school last week. In fact, both LSU and Georgia offered him a scholarship on the same day.

"It was real surprising," Jackson says. "You don't expect those two to be your first SEC offers. It was real eye-opening."

Jackson got both of the offers while at an Alabama summer camp. Georgia coaches told him they "liked everything I bring to the table and I'm perfect for their secondary." Alabama coaches liked Jackson too, though they haven't offered him a scholarship yet. He expects to hear from Alabama coaches this week on whether his camp performance warranted an offer. Alabama already has four defensive secondary commits and 19 total for its class of 2015, meaning spots are very limited going forward.

Jackson recently competed at the National Select 7-on-7 tournament in Hoover. His high school didn't win the tournament, but he looked good in coverage in what is generally just a passing drill. Some colleges have told Jackson he is too slow or too big to be a college cornerback, but he looked strong enough to hold his own at that position last weekend.

Jackson doesn't have a Top 5 or list of favorites yet, though UGA and LSU could be in good shape.

"I want to stay in the SEC," he says. "It feels good to see that the SEC is looking at me."

The Spain Park defensive back might visit South Carolina later this week. He expects to decide his official visits list at the end of the summer. He previously told AL.com that he wants to announce his college decision on his birthday Jan. 10.

Miami Hurricanes Linebacker Denzel Perryman finally has a Support Cast
By Jerry Steinberg, www.stateoftheu.com

Everyone knows that Denzel Perryman is a beast.

Perryman has made his mark in the ACC and the country for 4 years now, with spectacular hits and solid all-around play. But it hasn't been enough to get Miami's defense out of the depths of mediocrity, mostly because he did not have the best supporting cast around him.

Is that finally changing?

The Butkus Award semifinalist may finally have the support, particularly at the LB position, to make a mark and not end up overlooked by the unit's shortcomings.

Which players are making plays around "The President?"

For one, speedy sophomore Jermaine Grace is getting better and better every week.

The 6'1 212 pound missile from Miramar H.S. has accumulated two sacks (including a huge one on third down in the 1st quarter Vs Virginia Tech on Thursday), 36 tackles, and 4.5 big TFL this season. Grace was also named the ACC Co-Linebacker of the Week after Miami’s 30-6 win over Virginia Tech, in which he had the aforementioned sack, and recovered 2 third quarter fumbles.

He may not have the size you look for in an every down LB, but he has made his presence known with blitzes and heady play.

After a career high 8 tackles Vs Cincinnati, Miami Head Coach Al Golden explained Grace's recent success,

"His preparation has been better, his maturity and poise has been better, his confidence and being more vocal in the meeting rooms, to exhibit his confidence, to show that he knows what he’s doing and that he’s confident and that he can bring that to the game. All of those things are starting to happen."

When Raphael Kirby came to UM, he too was a bit undersized. Now a chiseled 6'1 238 pounds, the junior from Stone Mountain, Ga is finally starting to match his work in the weight room with on field production.

After a quiet first two seasons in Coral Gables, Kirby has started all 8 games this year, wracking up 32 tackles, 2 TFL's, and 2 INTs as well (including the game sealer Vs Cincinnati).

Al Golden said that the success and leadership of Kirby is helping both Perryman and Grace,

"Raphael Kirby is playing really good football. He's practicing hard and his preparation is improved, I'm happy for Kirb. And Grace is learning a lot of from Denzel and Kirb. I think if you ask those two the biggest difference is in how they prepare. And it's helping them play faster. No doubt about it, it takes away from the load on Denzel."

And also among the most pleasant surprises on the season, is another OLB, in Thurston Armbrister. The senior leads the way for the Hurricanes with 5 sacks.

With Armbrister, Grace, and Kirby all stepping up, Miami finally has a LB crew that isn't anonymous and ineffective minus Perryman.

There have still been some serious bumps in the road (GT and Nebraska run defense certainly comes to mind), and perhaps the 15th spot nationally in team defense (319 ypg allowed) is a bit misleading, but even the most skeptical of Miami fans has to admit the D at minimum has more play makers.

One thing is for sure, if UM hopes to finish the season strong, Grace, Kirby, and Armbrister need to continue making plays around Perryman, starting this weekend Vs North Carolina.

Go Canes

Didn't Denzel go to Gables?

Go Canes

My bad, they were talking about Grace.

Ohio_Cane...as far as offers are concerned, I don't even take what those recruiting sites say as gospel anymore. Remember that kid I told you about yesterday, who said that Shaw was an "a-hole"...well He told me He had a UM offer, but none of the sites that I checked showed a UM offer. Kid was the whole package, He had the character, grades, & the football ability. IMO, He could've gotten PT as SS last season, and possibly have been a starter this season.
