My friend and fellow blogger TonyCane did his research and put together some very interesting statistics to show us where (and why) we are at today (instead of just ranting or bloviating about it) and where we need to go to be back at the top of the college football heap.
Louisville Rushing & Passing Yard by game:
Miami - Passing: 206, Rushing: 130
MrSt - Passing: 278, Rushing: 325
Virg - Passing: 203, Rushing: 79
FaIn - Passing: 324, Rushing: 12
Wake - Passing: 206, Rushing: 215
Syrc - Passing: 174, Rushing: 178
Clem - Passing: 212, Rushing: 54
NcSt - Passing: 203, Rushing: 166
Nebraska Rushing & Passing Yard by game:
FAU - Passing: 286, Rushing: 498
MSt - Passing: 242, Rushing: 195
FSt - Passing: 282, Rushing: 280
Mia - Passing: 113, Rushing: 343
Ill - Passing: 166, Rushing: 488
MSt - Passing: 282, Rushing: 47
Nws - Passing: 237, Rushing: 234
Georgia Tech Rushing & Passing Yard by game:
Wof - Passing: 282, Rushing: 226
Tul - Passing: 015, Rushing: 344
GSo - Passing: 144, Rushing: 348
VTc - Passing: 125, Rushing: 250
Mia - Passing: 053, Rushing: 318
Duk - Passing: 201, Rushing: 282
UNC - Passing: 235, Rushing: 376
Excluding Florida A&M, I did see some interesting results when comparing how each of our opponents' offense did against Miami when compared to the rest of their opponents:
Louisville: 5th out of 8
Arkansas State: 5th out of 7
Nebraska: 5th out of 7
Duke: 7th out of 7
Georgia Tech: 6th out of 8
Cincinnati - 4th out of 6
I came into this expecting to see Miami at 3 or 4, but in most cases we held them to fewer yards than most of our opponents.
Here's Miami's total defense during Golden and Shannon's tenure over the first seven games:
Year, Pass, Rush, Turnovers:
2007: 1298, 0932, 15
2008: 1296, 0716, 09
2009: 1359, 0885, 09
2010: 1044, 1075, 21
2011: 1394, 1256, 11
2012: 1770, 1776, 13
2013: 1404, 0992, 19
2014: 1231, 1061, 14
Obviously the numbers have inflated under Golden, but this could be reflective of the overall talent level. Overlay that with the number of 4 and 5 star players on each team's Week 1 roster:
2007: 45
2008: 42
2009: 42
2010: 40
2011: 28
2012: 28
2013: 23
2014: 24
So, with those facts in mind, what do you think about the team's performance?
@FBSchedules: Toughest schedule played so far (NCAA method)
1. AU
2. MIAMI, FL
3. TENN
3. MISS ST
5. CLEM
5. ARK
7. TCU
8. NW
9. MEM
10. ORE

SOUP,
I don't want to answer your question. I'm done arguing in circles. I have zero faith in Al Golden. I'm done with him as our HC and look forward to when we hire the next guy. This feels just like Coker and Shannon. Just wasting time keeping these guys around. I'm not rooting for Al to fail because he already has in my opinion.

I haven't had the chance to get back there. Going to try again this week.
Did you want one?
I can ship one to you if Soup forwards me your info.

SOUP,
The question isn't whether or not we have more stars under Al vs Randy, but whether we have more or less stars than our opponents. See I'm getting dragged into this and I dont want too.
Kumbayah my lord... Kumbayah.

Nah, its all good Go Canes. I would order one online if I wanted to spend the money right now, lol. They look pretty cool though and thanks for the offer.

It's all made up talking points. Anytime some one questions "why aren't we beating these mediocre teams?" The bl's come back with excuses explaining "this is why we aren't winning championships." That's not the question...
Forgive me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen where the "haters" have posted that we should be winning national champions today.

SOUP, I was in a bar in Eufaula watching the game last night with a new found young Cane fan and I told him no Old School Cane would ever want the Irish to ever win, then I read that you were rooting for the Irish.
Man I hope that was the Captain talkin, LOL!
Come to think of it I am a Hater, Im a Notre Dame Hating Son of a Buck LOL!

I feel the exact same way you do DUDE. I'm just so tired dude. Tired of losing year In and year out. Tired watching teams like TCU, Baylor, Missippi st, ole miss, Michigan st, Louisville, Missouri, K-state become powerhouse programs contending for national titles and were stuck with cr@p. I just don't and never will get it. It breaks my heart to no end and I'm ANGRY dude. I don't even enjoy watching games anymore because I'll i do is get mad the whole game and then the rest of the weekend I'm in a bad mood. And I so sick of being in a bad mood because no one at UM is apparently interested in building a winner anymore. Smdh

NativeCane...I can't stand the current regime at FSU and their coach and QB gives me the creeps. I know that rooting for ND was wrong but at the time it did not feel that way.

Nick is ANGRY? Oh my, we all better look out!
Posted by: SOUP | October 19, 2014 at 09:14 PM
My closest friend is an FSU alum. He's been telling me all season rooting for the Noles right now is joyless for him.
Really loves that they're winning but thinks Winston is a total douche.
Think there are a lot of Noles fans that feel like he does right now.
Posted by: Go Canes | October 19, 2014 at 09:20 PM
Lurker...why don't we have lights on the practice field yet?
Why are we just now raising funds for an indoor facility? I know of a HS coach that's gotten an indoor facility much faster than we have.
And how is it that we can build The BUC, before we can put lights on the practice field, and build an indoor facility?
Serious questions from somebody who doesn't understand "how funding, contributions, and things like endowments, work"...

SOUP,
I'll play your game. If we beat VT by 17 I'd say it was a good win. But then we still face going 2-2 over the rest of the season at best in my opinion. I imagine the 17 point win would be sloppy and mostly on account of VT not playing well too. But I dont want to discredit a ficticious 17 point win before it happens either, lol. Its not like I wont be rooting for my team. I'm just not expecting anything out of them like I used to. Not under Al, even with a 17 point win. All that said, how about you if we lose by 17?
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 19, 2014 at 09:27 PM
^^^ the point is I wont be any happier or sad by any outcome for the remainder of the season short of winning out, which wont happen. I have NO REASON TO BELIEVE IN AL GOLDEN or his ability to achieve such a huge task.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 19, 2014 at 09:29 PM
If we lose by 17 to VT there will not be enough vodka in the world to drown my sorrows.
But that will NOT happen. We will win by 17.
That is all.

The reason we don't have any of those things is because of fans like U who keep complaining about what we don't have but REFUSE to contribute a single dime to the Hurricane Club or buy season tickets but spend all day on the Internet complaining about what "WE" don't have.
Any more questions U worthless person who has no reason to live except to criticize the Canes???
Posted by: SOUP | October 19, 2014 at 09:35 PM
You think Al can win a BCS game SOUP?
I think he can win the Coastal someday.
I don't think he can win the ACC when the other side has Louisville, FSU & Clemson.
No way do i believe he can even get to a BCS game let alone the NC playoff.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 19, 2014 at 09:38 PM
And he could win the Coastal ONLY because its Miami. He could never do it at a school like GT.

Posted by: SOUP | October 19, 2014 at 09:14 PM
The fact that your not angry SOUP about the state of our program combined with the fact that you actually rooted for Notre Dame makes me have to question your true motives. Maybe someone here who is obviously a fan of Cambells Company has a secret agenda. I for one will never be happy/content with the product on the field since the end if the 2005 season and I for one would never, ever root for Notre dame. Because I am a true orange and green blood canes fan!

I agree, much inner turmoil watching that game, the old steaming, festering hate for ND verses the newfound hate for a Coach and school who would make a deal with Satan to win another National Championship.

CR - please reread the post from the last blog. It explains how the money is disbursed at ANY accredited university.
There is a different bucket for athletics with its own funding arm. An indoor practice facility is the next priority, I believe we have lights, but not 100% sure. Either way, they're both important and the reason we don't have them is that there is not enough money in the athletic budget.
For the third or fourth time, the athletic dept or school president, just can't take money fron the needy students scholarship and housing bucket, or the cancer research bucket, or the genetics fellowship bucket, and put it into the athletic budget.
We need more athletic contributions through the Hurricane Club or other approved athletic funding campaigns.
Also please reread Soup's post.
People that say they are fans, live in S Florida, and can afford to attend games, hurt the team, and especially the players, in more ways than one.
I just don't know how else I can explain it.
Posted by: Lurker | October 19, 2014 at 09:53 PM
LOL
Posted by: JaxCane | October 19, 2014 at 09:54 PM
And I have donated to the Hurricane Club, bought season tickets for the last 22 years and go to as many games as I can from Central Florida. So what do U do?
Posted by: SOUP | October 19, 2014 at 09:55 PM
TY Lurker, see how easy that was SOUP...you didn't have to call me all those names LMAO!
Posted by: CaneRock | October 19, 2014 at 09:57 PM

U know I appreciate U even IF I do not always agree with U?
Posted by: SOUP | October 19, 2014 at 10:00 PM
Now Nick on the other hand is about to get BANNED!
Posted by: SOUP | October 19, 2014 at 10:01 PM
Also I hate Notre Dane with a passion, BUT.....
Ponder this: anything that derails FSU and possibly stops them from another NC, is way better for the U than having to tolerate an ND win. I hate ND, but in terms of recruiting, overall bragging rights, etc, last night an
FSU loss is better for us long term than an ND loss.
