My friend and fellow blogger TonyCane did his research and put together some very interesting statistics to show us where (and why) we are at today (instead of just ranting or bloviating about it) and where we need to go to be back at the top of the college football heap.
Louisville Rushing & Passing Yard by game:
Miami - Passing: 206, Rushing: 130
MrSt - Passing: 278, Rushing: 325
Virg - Passing: 203, Rushing: 79
FaIn - Passing: 324, Rushing: 12
Wake - Passing: 206, Rushing: 215
Syrc - Passing: 174, Rushing: 178
Clem - Passing: 212, Rushing: 54
NcSt - Passing: 203, Rushing: 166
Nebraska Rushing & Passing Yard by game:
FAU - Passing: 286, Rushing: 498
MSt - Passing: 242, Rushing: 195
FSt - Passing: 282, Rushing: 280
Mia - Passing: 113, Rushing: 343
Ill - Passing: 166, Rushing: 488
MSt - Passing: 282, Rushing: 47
Nws - Passing: 237, Rushing: 234
Georgia Tech Rushing & Passing Yard by game:
Wof - Passing: 282, Rushing: 226
Tul - Passing: 015, Rushing: 344
GSo - Passing: 144, Rushing: 348
VTc - Passing: 125, Rushing: 250
Mia - Passing: 053, Rushing: 318
Duk - Passing: 201, Rushing: 282
UNC - Passing: 235, Rushing: 376
Excluding Florida A&M, I did see some interesting results when comparing how each of our opponents' offense did against Miami when compared to the rest of their opponents:
Louisville: 5th out of 8
Arkansas State: 5th out of 7
Nebraska: 5th out of 7
Duke: 7th out of 7
Georgia Tech: 6th out of 8
Cincinnati - 4th out of 6
I came into this expecting to see Miami at 3 or 4, but in most cases we held them to fewer yards than most of our opponents.
Here's Miami's total defense during Golden and Shannon's tenure over the first seven games:
Year, Pass, Rush, Turnovers:
2007: 1298, 0932, 15
2008: 1296, 0716, 09
2009: 1359, 0885, 09
2010: 1044, 1075, 21
2011: 1394, 1256, 11
2012: 1770, 1776, 13
2013: 1404, 0992, 19
2014: 1231, 1061, 14
Obviously the numbers have inflated under Golden, but this could be reflective of the overall talent level. Overlay that with the number of 4 and 5 star players on each team's Week 1 roster:
2007: 45
2008: 42
2009: 42
2010: 40
2011: 28
2012: 28
2013: 23
2014: 24
So, with those facts in mind, what do you think about the team's performance?

From what I've read tonight, to be a real fan you have to:
1) Not enjoy any games unless we win them all
2) question the school's commitment because we don't have a bubble
3) Never choose to root for what you feel is the lesser of two evils.
4) Ignore the stat showing we've played the second toughest schedule in America so far.
5) Kind of sort of root for failure.
6)And of course, never attend games.

Boy it would really be nice to beat CaTech, get a little hype going, and have a nice crowd for Jim a Kelly. He sure deserves it. He's been through a lot, not just with his cancer, but with he's been through with Hunter.

But that will NOT happen. We will win by 17.
That is all.

Leaving the emotion out of it, I hate the domers just like any Canes fan, an FSU loss would have been better for us. Why?
1. Anything that derails FSU is good for us
2. Anything that results in preventing FSU winning another NC is good for us.
3. FSU is much more of a threat in recruiting for us than ND, by a country mile.
4. And will probably lose at least one game with their remaining schedule.
5. Anybody that insults the owner is, well, not the sharpest tool in the shed.
There were plenty of reasons to want FSU to lose last night. Having ND win is disgusting, having FSU win another NC is more disgusting.

Since the blog is about the "facts' lets look at them. If someone had told me before the season we would be ranked 22nd in total defense after 7 games playing the 2nd toughest schedule in FBS I would have taken it. VT is ranked 20th BTW. We are 56th against the run, giving up 156 yards per game. VT is ranked 30th, giving up 123 yards per game. We are 16th in pass efficiency defense and VT is 23rd. We are a paltry 52nd in scoring defense. VT is 19th. We are 66th in rushing offense - 162 yards per game. VT is 77th, 152 yards per game. We are 24th in pass efficiency offense, one better than FSU. VT is 89th. We are 54th in scoring offense. VT is 76th.
Here are the troubling stats. VT is #4 in 3rd down conversion percentage about 26% - we are 71st about 40%. VT is averaging 70 penalty yards per game - we are averaging 78 penalty yards per game. VT is averaging 8 tackles for loss per game ranking 7th. We are averaging 4.6 tackles for loss per game ranking 108th.
By the stats, this shakes up as a game between fairly even teams. But watching VT the other night, I saw a team in disarray. I saw a team that couldn't run (Pitt is ranked high in rush defense) and a quarterback who was very erratic. Meaning, play defense close to the line of scrimmage and you shall be rewarded. I was psyched about our chances. Then D No announces the all is well assessment and that makes me think he won't change the scheme for the VT game the way he did against Duke. I still think we win Thursday. I think what the people who have pronounced Golden a dead man walking forget is that Kaaya, and Duke are special players any team in the country would feel blessed to have (why don't our fans?). Duke is not getting enough rushes in our offense. If we feed him, the victories will come. We have always won big games when we rush the ball well. Thursday should be no different.

WWIM...IDC what GC looks like, if SOUP confirms that they met, I'll take His word for it...SOUP?
Posted by: CaneRock | October 19, 2014 at 11:22 PM
Okay here is the line.
14. Miami, FL – 96-60, 61.54%
Playing 14th toughest schedule and being 22nd in total defense is still pretty good. Now, the 3rd down conversion percentage allowed is the damning number. That's why Nebraska and GT beat us. They kept the ball from the offense. That has to change Thursday for us to win.

What are we establishing with this? Sorry CR, you know you're my boy, but I'm not so sure this road is worth going down, but I guess I'm not really sure what this is all about either, lol. Maybe I should shutup? SOUP has never met me.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 19, 2014 at 11:26 PM
To be honest (which I always am), we did NOT meet at the game but I think we have met before and I think I know who it is but I can't say due to confidentiality reasons. I know that does not fix things but it is all I can say right now.
Posted by: SOUP | October 19, 2014 at 11:28 PM
The NCAA method for strength of schedule is based on last years results. Not what this years competition actually is. We are ranked 13 by that method. If we were to look at a ranking of SOS based on the strength of teams this year obviously we would be lower. If we looked at SOS thru this point of the season, I can't imagine it would be in the top 30.

K, there's a few problems here. 1) Its not only a this year problem. Its a years long problem. 2) These stats dont show the stupid things going on in games. 5 safeties, the goal line D, the overall prevent D which doesnt take advantage of our natural advantages. 3) The inability to take away whatever it is that is the other team does well. Like GT & Nebraska.

CR, really man, don't double down on your argument. It's not a winner.
$40 million? LOL!! Peanuts. Do you know what it takes to run an athletic program at a major D1 school. You clearly don't. Do you know that money losing programs like WBB, WBV, Swimming & Diving, CC and T&F, among others, have to be supported?
Do you know that a big name school like UM cannot afford to have popular sports like W Softball, gymnastics, men's golf, men's rowing, men's swimming and diving, etc? Why is that? Money.
I'm not saying this to be offensive, but you don't understand what you're talking about at all, and I do. Please stop.
More contributions are needed. From "fans"
