This Date in Hurricanes History, October 25th, 2001...
Brought to you by the UM Sports Hall of Fame:
Freshman Frank Gore highlighted his skills in front of a nationally televised audience by rushing for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 6 carries to lead the top-ranked Hurricanes to a 45-3 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers in front of a Thursday night crowd of 44,411 in the Orange Bowl!
Miami moved to 6-0 on the year with a balanced offense and a relentless defense that held WVU at bay, including safety James Lewis' 74 yard interception return for a touchdown.
UMSHoF member quarterback Ken Dorsey also looked impressive completing 16 of 27 passes for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Canes moved back to # 1 after a 49-27 victory the week before at FSU, a spot they would not relinquish, and finish 12-0 and capture their 5th National Championship with the Rose Bowl victory over Nebraska!

Final thoughts:
If Bubba from Clermont applies at UF and doesn't get in, and Javier from Hialeah doesn't even bother applying to UM, does that make it easier or harder to get into either school?
I rest my case.

I remember going to the Miami VS VT game with my brother before Miami went to the Ship. My wife bought me round trip airfare and tickets for an early Xmas gift. It was my first game in the OB and it was an awesome one to witness, especially watching Willis Mcgahee...he was awesome! I truly think that Ken will always be Da Man for me though.

Between Gore,McGahee,Portis,James,Moss,Shockey,Johnson, & Wayne to name a few, that has to be at least 50-60Ks in the NFL. Gonna be a while before another College puts together that kind of talent.

Gore absolutely had a learning disibiliity. I know this for a fact. One of my friends wife worked with and tutored Gore thru high school. He really worked his butt off to get to the U. He always told her he was going to be a football player at U.

Beer, to answer your question, thus is just a guess based on some logic, assuming that most of these PhDs were in a science field, the most "scientific" MD's that I can think off are oncologists, radiation oncologists, opthamalogists, maybe radiologists. I'm just spitballing it, though.
Posted by: Lurker | October 25, 2014 at 07:30 PM
Good spitball. It is among your list.
Posted by: BEERicane | October 25, 2014 at 07:32 PM

I think we should bring one more QB in this class. Not good to have just 3 QB's on schollies next year. Plus if BK growth and progression continues, no way he is here past 3 yrs. Imagine if he knew the play book down pat!!!! Heard they are giving him more freedom to call audibles which I think he did last night. If you watch the game, he changed it up a lot yo run with Duke.
With this O-line, gotta love a depth of Yearby, Gus, Scarlett, Walton and Exter. Wonder who red shirts?
Also need at least 1 TE.

True. They are the roughest treatments to endure from a radiation standpoint of all disease sites. But it's worth it. Even in the most advanced (locoregional) stages, cure is not only possible, it's likely so we accept all of those horrible side effects.

CR,
Ole Miss with McCluster, Mike Wallace, Snead was very capable '08-'09.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 26, 2014 at 12:30 AM
We can't try to be Notre Dame and beat FSU. We have to have the VT game plan. Ride Captain Ride on that Duke train. FSU vulnerable against run somewhat and you would rather attack their front seven than their back four again like VT. We'll have a better feel for FSU next Thursday. I think Louisville has a chance of making a real game of it.
Posted by: SJMPARMAN | October 26, 2014 at 12:35 AM
True story
Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse of Louisville has informed its customer that the raw bar will not feature crab legs this weekend as a precautionary measure, as Jameis Winston and the Florida State Seminoles are headed to town to take on the Cardinals.

Posted by: CaneRock | October 26, 2014 at 12:51 AM
Posted by: SJMPARMAN | October 26, 2014 at 12:35 AM
We can only ride Duke and the running game to a point. We clearly beT VT upfront all night with our OL, FSU is another animal. We will not beat FSU without throwing the ball as their front 7 is better. We have to win down field and keep the FSU defense on their heels so we can run Duke. Unlike last year, I'm not sure if FSU has someone that can consistantly cover Walford. We need good Clive to show up.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 26, 2014 at 01:00 AM
SJMPARMAN...I agree, if Duke's hot, feed em'. This team is starting to look like a run to pass team.
Posted by: CaneRock | October 26, 2014 at 01:04 AM
How many passes did we attempt against VA Tech?
Posted by: WWIN | October 26, 2014 at 01:04 AM
Also Dukes 20+ yard gains on VT will be 10 yards on FSU. Not that Duke can't break loose, it will just be harder. Yearby and Gus will have to help carry the load, and for God's sake, no turnovers! We need every advantage we can get. If we dont pressure Winston, we are in trouble. It has to be more that just McCord and it will be a team effort to bring him down because he's really strong in the pocket and has great improv skills when the play breaks down. Mark will need to bring the kitchen sink and Al cannot let the O go into a conservative shell.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 26, 2014 at 01:04 AM
I think we'll beat em!
Posted by: WWIN | October 26, 2014 at 01:05 AM
WWIM...I know BK had less than a 100 yards passing.
Posted by: CaneRock | October 26, 2014 at 01:05 AM
I think 7 WW, I think Kaaya was 7 of 15 but I cant remember.
Also field position against FSU will be a big thing. Especially in regards to where we put Wintson.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 26, 2014 at 01:06 AM
Well against VT I finally saw the team I thought we were capable all year. We can't slip against UNC, and I dont want FSU to lose on Thursday night @Louisville. I want to be the one to knock them off.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 26, 2014 at 01:08 AM
Take Green and O'Leary away, you win half the battle against em'...but that's easier said than done.
Posted by: CaneRock | October 26, 2014 at 01:12 AM
I'm just going off the CCRs, but from the looks of it, Carter seems to be our best TE coverage man, put His butt on O'Leary when we go man to man.
Posted by: CaneRock | October 26, 2014 at 01:14 AM
I think Winston does a pretty good job of finding all of his guys. Best to get a hat on him, maybe Perryman can give him a concussion in the 1st qtr.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 26, 2014 at 01:23 AM
I have a feeling, even though I've only seen UNC play once, Miami will go back fo the prevent.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 26, 2014 at 01:24 AM
We're going to see a lot if Grace against O'Leary I think.
He's got the size and speed to give him trouble.

Posted by: Go Canes | October 26, 2014 at 01:32 AM
Is O'Leary really all that? I know he scores a lot and has good hands, but I've never thought of him as fast or physical. I'll give him crafty. Winston likes to go downfield, we have to keep guys covered and force the ball out of his hand early. Exotic blitzes and straight up beating their OL.

UNC is going to score Terrance. Their QB is legit.
But if we execute the same game plan we had against Va Tech, but also mix in the passing game in space offensively, we'll win this one by double digits in my opinion.

I have a feeling, even though I've only seen UNC play once, Miami will go back fo the prevent.
Posted by: The Dude | October 26, 2014 at 01:24 AM
I hope not, but it seems to be our MO. Against weaker offenses they play more aggressive... More blitzes, moving guys up and some press. Against stronger Os they break out the prevent, hold blocks not shoot gaps etc. Even the second half while we were nursing the lead you could see examples of this BUT we forced turnovers. Forced being the operative word as it appears the plan is to play that soft D and force turnovers. Actually it doesn't just appear so, AG has said so.. So they did what they're tought. And it worked. We've seen what happens when the turnovers don't come.
I wasn't all that impressed w UNC yesterday, but that O has put up some numbers this year. This game has me more nervous than VT did, but I'm also hopeful that we continue to see the more aggressive side of our D.
My biggest fear though has more to do with the weather. It was cool in Bburgh Thursday night, Saturday will be a different story. I shudder at the thought of having to look at Al in a sweat soaked business shirt again. Oh, the horror!!!

Honestly don't know why you feel that way Dude. Through eight games this season no one has passed effectively against us.
When you look at the overall season, GT has scored 38 or more in 5 of 8 games, 30 or more in 6. We, along with VT, are the only two teams to hold them below that number.
We've been run on by maybe the two teams in the country who do it best, but overall we're playing good D this season.
Posted by: Go Canes | October 26, 2014 at 10:48 AM
Badgley & Vogel have really stepped up.
Posted by: CaneRock | October 26, 2014 at 11:04 AM
Go Canes, I agree, NU & GT are gonna do what they do. But I still don't like the defensive gameplans for those games. And I hate to keep harping on it, but that Center uncovered was just, how shall I saaaaaay...CRIMINAL?!
Posted by: CaneRock | October 26, 2014 at 11:15 AM
I hope the Canes use that VT game plan from here on out. Run to set up the pass. Although Kaaya is a good freshman QB, the Canes would be foolish to heavily rely on the freshman to make plays when the biggest strength of this offense is running the ball with the best RB in college football running behind one of the best OLs.
I think that puts Kaaya in the best position to be successful, when the Canes run first and throw off of play action. When Dorset is on single coverage, best CBs in college football cannot stay with him. Running the ball also gives the Canes time of possession and gives the D some rest.
Before the VT game, I predicted the Canes would win big and run for 300+. I could tell the coaches were confident they could run the ball successfully, and I think that will be their strategy going forward. I am probably the only one happy to see Duke in the game at garbage time because padding his stats gets him and the Canes on Sportscenter, and helps him get post season awards. Bigger stats also helps recruiting. The Canes took a huge step forward under Golden last Thursday. A double digit win against UNC next week and we are looking at closing the second half of the season at 5-1 or 6-0, and momentum in recruiting. There is no one here or coming in to replace Duke and Dorset, but the Canes will be much deeper and stronger at each position. Canes should make their way into the national conversation next season.

Defensive points allowed to common 2013 opponents so far--Louisville, Duke, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.
2013--159
2014--70
Think this stat gives a good indicator of the direction this program is going, especially when you consider three of the four were night games on the road.
Posted by: Go Canes | October 26, 2014 at 12:52 PM
While TOP is important, I say get a big lead like we got Thursday night, and then pin your ears back & play defense. Another way you can increase TOP for us, and limit it for the opponent, is TOs and/or consistent 3 & outs. I'm tired of protecting the defense, sudden change is a part of the game.
