VA Cane have fun at the game tomorrow night in Blacksburg and cheer our Canes on to victory. Go Canes!

WWIN/WWIM...that comment is not going to make it here. Try again?

SJM - he might break them in 3. Let's do the math after the season is over times 3.

DURING THE GAME THE BLOG WILL WIDE OPEN!

Go Canes

Lights out, tomorrow is game day!!

Go Canes!!

Lurker

Soup, nice write up on the 3 coaches you mentioned.

Hoke is a disaster. No cloud. No self-imposed ship restrictions like we had. One of the premier brands in college football. One of the best state schools in the country that some call a public Ivy. Should be able to recruit extremely well. Just no excuses - he's had time with nothing to impede him.

Muschump - I don't need to say too much more, other than he's not head coach material and never will be. GA State is all you need to know, really. Should have been fired in the tunnel on the way to the lockers at the end of that game. Also, like Mich, no clouds, no schollie restrictions, nothing to hold them back, and they also have boosters that know how to buy players (remember this: "gotta feed the fam")

As far as Strong, way too early to tell. He proved himself at Louisville. But Texas is a special place with a strong good ole boy network, he'll have to navigate that. He's having to change the culture there and deserves at least a few years. Texas' previous head coach Mack Brown, retired three years ago😜. There was a country club atmosphere and the entire team was soft and had recruited poorly despite having more resources than any other college in the whole US of A.

Sumlin? Has never really fielded a strong defensive team at Baylor or TAM. Lucked in to a transcendent college player like Johhny Football. He may be a really good coach in the end. Or he may be overrated. Looks lost on the sidelines often. The next couple of years will tell, but imo the jury's still out on him. He may not be nearly as good as advertised.

Soup, what exactly does "wide open" mean? Just asking.

I just like seeing my new avatar (LOL).....and I am digging the limited traffic on the site. Spares me from having to read the same thing over and over again.

SJMPARMAN

Lurker - here are the records:

Game record - 566 yards - Stephen Morris vs. NC State, 9/29/12 [26-49]

SEASON 3,642 Bernie Kosar, 1984 [262-416]

CAREER 9,565 Ken Dorsey, 1999-2002 [668-1,153]

I don't think Morris record will ever be broken. That guy could throw the deep ball better than anyone. He struggled in the intermediate area necessary to keep drives going. In some ways, under appreciated in his junior year. He was magical before he was injured. Not so much after that.

Single season may be safe as well for this year. First two games kind of set that back. Kaaya will get his chances tomorrow. Bud will blitz during this game. If the line blocks, and the running backs pick up the blitz, our receivers should do well.

To get the career record in three years, Kaaya would really have to perform beyond imagination to go over 9,565 yards? That's an average of 318 yards a game. Don't think that happens. 4 years have to average - 239 yards a game. Tall order but doable.

SOUP

During the game there will be no restrictions or guidelines. After that we will go back to this mode of operations.

I don't understand your math. 9565 divided by 39 (13 games for 3 seasons) = 245.2. If you assume only 12 game seasons, you get 965 divided by 36 = 265.7/

So I guess it will be like that movie, The Purge. I'll be bringing the women and children in, locking the doors, and waiting it out with my Mossberg by my side.

Seriously though, I rarely if ever comment during games. Too nervous if it's away watching at home, or actually at the stadium if it's a home game.

I love the concept Soup!

CaneRock

Crossing routes, draw plays, screen game, and the deep shots will be there, but I don't see us scoring in no 40s tonight. I think we win though.

TonyCane

Bullseye on Strong. Very pampered team with depth issues at Wb. Players used to have smoothie bar in weight room and would take a leather seated bus for the .25 mile distance to practice. Strong took that away, and suspended or kicked off a dozen players.

TonyCane

Depth issues at quarterback

Thanks TSully, I am counting on us to pull it together, get a big win. Win or lose I will stick with these kids we can do it!!!

AG's record in big games isnt good, and Beamer gets the most from his talent.

VT has 2 D starters out, should help kaaya.

I had this as a loss before the season started, not so sure now...

Still going with VT, but a great chance for AG and No'D to prove me wrong,

This would be a convincing win if we can get it...

BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA

As big games go, this one counts – regardless of win-loss records.

When the Miami Hurricanes meet Virginia Tech in a Thursday night showdown (ESPN) amid the autumn beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, both teams will undoubtedly be thankful they’re still in the hunt for an Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title.

Not close to one. Not necessarily likely to earn one. Just still part of the race.

“They’re all must-win games,” UM coach Al Golden said. “Every game is.

Miami Hurricanes must win at Virginia Tech to keep hopes of division title alive
By Susan Miller Degnan, www.miamiherald.comOctober 22nd, 2014

As big games go, this one counts – regardless of win-loss records.

When the Miami Hurricanes meet Virginia Tech in a Thursday night showdown (ESPN) amid the autumn beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, both teams will undoubtedly be thankful they’re still in the hunt for an Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title.

Not close to one. Not necessarily likely to earn one. Just still part of the race.

“They’re all must-win games,” UM coach Al Golden said. “Every game is.

“I think maybe when we got back from Atlanta, we had some guys that maybe didn’t understand how early it was in the race. Based on what’s transpired since then, maybe they’re believing now. Maybe they have a little more faith that this thing is far from over.”

The Canes (4-3, 1-2 ACC), losers of all three road games this season – the opener at Louisville, on Sept. 20 at Nebraska and Oct. 4 at Georgia Tech – also have Coastal Division games Nov. 1 against North Carolina, Nov. 22 at Virginia and the regular-season finale Nov. 29 against Pitt.

And then there’s that pesky Atlantic Division rival Florida State, which comes to Sun Life Stadium on Nov. 15.

It’s too early to dissect the ACC tiebreaker, but for the Canes to have a fighting chance, the basics, for now, are that UM needs to win its four remaining division games, and Duke, Pitt and Virginia (the three Coastal teams with one divisional loss) need to lose an additional conference game.

The Hokies, like Miami, are 4-3 and 1-2.

Nobody said it would be easy, but the already unpredictable results of the vulnerable Coastal Division teams make it apparent that anything could happen.

“That’s what I’m always hoping for,” freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya said of his Coastal Division goal. “That’s our mentality every day, to win the Coastal.”

Senior Phillip Dorsett, on pace to shatter the NCAA record for yards per reception with his 34.4-yard average, is a believer.

“We always believe we can win the Coastal,” Dorsett said. “It’s not out of the picture. Teams are going to beat up on each other every game, so we’ve just got to win out.”

Dorsett is one of the Hurricanes who played in Blacksburg the last time UM traveled there in 2011. On that October day, Miami came back from a 21-7 deficit to go ahead 35-31 with 2:46 left. But the Hokies ran and passed their way through another porous UM defensive effort and scored on fourth down with about a minute left.

The Canes got the ball back but could only get to the Hokies’ 47 as time ran out.

UM won in 2012 and got hammered 42-24 last season, as running back Duke Johnson was out with a broken ankle.

This year, Johnson is back with a vengeance. He is sixth nationally in rushing yards per carry (7.2), 15th in rushing yards (787) and 18th in rushing yards per game (112.4). Johnson will run against a VT defense that will be without its leading tackler, linebacker Chase Williams, because of a knee injury.

Johnson’s protégé, freshman Joseph Yearby, has 317 rushing yards and is averaging 7.4 yards per carry.

“Probably going to be the most explosive offense we’ve seen today, right now,” respected Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said. “You’ve got two dynamic tailbacks in Johnson and Yearby. You’ve got Dorsett – he’s like a track champion. … They’ve got a young quarterback, but he’s improving and growing each week and has got a live arm, throws a nice deep ball.

“They have a very talented team …”

On the other side of the ball, the Hurricanes will face a Virginia Tech offense significantly weaker than the Hokies’ defense. Two of the Hokies’ top three tailbacks are out, but leading rusher Marshawn Williams is expected back from a sprained ankle – though it’s not known just how much he has recovered.

In Virginia Tech’s 21-16 loss at Pitt last Thursday, the Hokies ran for 26 yards. Hokies coach Frank Beamer has made changes to his offensive line for the Miami game, giving redshirt freshman Wyatt Teller his first start at left guard and moving usual left guard David Wang to center.

Golden will take a victory any way he can get it.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” he said. “They’re all big. This is the next one-game mission. This is a big one, for sure.”

Miami Hurricanes’ Jon Feliciano comes full circle at right tackle
By Susan Miller Degnan, www.miamiherald.comOctober 22nd, 2014

Hurricanes offensive lineman Jon Feliciano, a 6-5, 316-pound senior, has played tackle, guard, tackle again, guard again and finally tackle during his career at Miami. He’s pretty sure right tackle will be where he starts the rest of the season, given the relatively recent knee injuries of former starter Taylor Gadbois and his backup, freshman Kc McDermott.

The last time he played in Blacksburg, when he was a redshirt freshman in 2011, Feliciano said he started at right tackle and Lane Stadium was so loud that he committed two false starts.

“This is coming around full circle for me,” he said earlier this week of the challenge the Hurricanes (4-3, 1-2 ACC) will face Thursday night at Virginia Tech (4-3, 1-2).

Despite the crowd decibels, Feliciano said he has no worries about freshman left guard Nick Linder, who moved into his starting spot when Feliciano replaced Gadbois.

“I already told Nick — I was messing with him — and I was like, ‘Nick, you can’t do as bad as I did my freshman year when I was there. You’re not going to false start twice.’”

“It’s a great atmosphere, where you want to play college football,” Feliciano said of Lane. “It’s going to be fun playing in front of that big crowd.

“It’ll be pretty cool having the whole nation watch us, but I don’t really care when we play. I just want to win. This is a huge game for us.”

Ohio_Cane

Yes, UMike, U can approve your own comments lol

Go Canes

It seems like this kid was never interested in us or am I way off?

Ohio_Cane

UF lead for the longest time, but considering the dumpster fire they're dealing with, and how ND is playing, he flipped.

But yes, we always trailed for him.

UMike

There was interest, but he was a heavy UF lean for a while. Still a kid you hope to get

Thanks fellas.

UMike

Go Canes.. my predictions never go well lol... I just wanna relax and watch the game and hope for the best. I just remember when the Canes OWNED Thursday night games... hopefully it looks something like that.

CaneRock

Sometimes the best defense, is your offense. I think VT's gonna try to milk the clock, and keep our offense on the sidelines. I see our possession count the same as the GT game, maybe a lil' higher. So we're gonna have to make the most of our possessions...a STs TD would be nice...maybe steal a possession via onside kick or fake punt...and a defensive TD would be nice also.

Go Canes

Wow the UNC scandal is top story on CNN..com.

3100 athletes took sham classes over almost 20 years.

NCAA is back in the spotlight. If that's not lack of institutional control I don't know what is.
