Soup U rule hopefully that can be the case for FSU and Pitt as well. But that is awesome.

Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | October 10, 2014 at 01:53 PM

YES, that is the case. The Pitt game is a tough one because that is Thanksgiving weekend and EVERY hotel will be booked full.

SOUP

First game on the schedule............you guessed it........JVille St baby!

Can we play them TWICE a year? Is there a rule against that? LOL

WWIN

The man who hired Davis at UNC, James Moeser, now a Chancellor Emeritus, said in another letter that "the ultimate outcome of the UNC process has been most unfair to Butch Davis. His only transgression was excessive trust in one individual [John Blake] and a lack of internal monitoring and administrative control within the program," adding, "I would not have fired him."

What you said!!!! LMAO

mi@mic@ne

UNC is a tight ass institution. Thats why they cant keep good coaches. They go overboard on their internal investigations.

Butch was not a good fit in that kind of institution. Butch best work of in his entire coaching career has been at the U.

Terrance Sullivan

Soup U rule. That is all.

Go Canes

This Butch thing isn't about UNC as much as it is about the way he left.

But the UNC thing hurt him too. UM paid dearly for violations that occurred under the watch of an unknowing coach.

I doubt they want anything to do with another one that had the same thing occur.

WWIN

Soup,

On behalf of the "haters" and being one of the 4 Horsemen, can me and my squadron get our last shots in today before we CONVINCINGLY beat Cincy tomorrow and not allowed to post anything negative regarding Golden and Co for a 2 weeks?

WWIN

Davis' Miami program was producing a jaw-dropping amount of first-round picks. Twenty-two of them, ranging from Ray Lewis to Edgerrin James to Ed Reed to Andre Johnson. Larry Coker, Davis' old assistant, did a nice job taking over in the short term, winning his first 24 games at Miami, but eventually the program began to backslide. Four seasons after Davis left, Miami went from finishing No. 5 in the Coaches Poll to No. 11 and then a year later, the Canes finished No. 18, and then unranked. How many titles might Miami had won if Davis had stayed? Both he and Canes fans are curious.

And, yes, he says he regrets leaving Miami.

Haven't they had a nationally dominant basketball program for about 50 years under only 3-4 coaches?

Ohio_Cane

Prediction time...

Canes - 42
Cincy - 17

Defense holds Cincy under 150 passing, and under 125 rushing.

Offense has 500+ total yards. Duke hits 145 rushing with 2 tds. Stacy Coley breaks out of his slump.

Go Canes

I like that prediction too.

mi@mic@ne

Comparing a basketball program to football is like apples to oranges.. totally different

WWIN

"Very much so. I would've loved to have stayed for 30 years at Miami," he said. "We couldn't get it worked out from a contractual standpoint and it had nothing to do with money, but that's a whole different story. They win it the next year. They played for it the year after that. Everything was going spectacularly after that. How many would we have won? I wish I had stayed another 10 years to find out how many."

Davis' explanation for what was behind his departure from UM: "Ten days before we played BC [Boston College] in the last game of the season, we had completed 97 percent of the contract. It had taken us three hours to agree to the money. That was done. I was probably one of the lowest-paid [I-A] head coaches when I took that job [in 1995] and then after seven years, they were paying me $1 million. The stumbling block we could never get over was, if they decided to do what North Carolina did [by just suddenly firing him] they were only going to pay me 20 percent of the money, but because [Miami] had been burned by Howard [Schnellenberger] leaving and Jimmy leaving and Dennis [Erickson] leaving, so if I had ever left I had to pay them 80 percent.

"I said, 'Guys that isn't fair. I can't pay you 80 and you're only gonna pay me 20. If you wake up and say, 'I don't like redhead coaches,' I'm gone. Let's either make it 80-80, 20-20 or 50-50.' We battled over 20-80 for almost two months. I turned the Cleveland Browns job down. I turned down two other jobs. Well, lo and behold, the last home visit I made I'm sitting in Antrel Rolle's living room and his mom and dad said, 'Coach, are you gonna be here?' I said, 'Antrel, I will be the head coach at the University of Miami,' and I believed in all my heart I was going to be. Then we go home and four or five days later we still can't get the contract done. [Cleveland president] Carmen Policy calls and says, 'Would you reconsider?'

“When I told Jerry that we were gonna trade Herschel Walker he was kind of astonished. He said, ‘Really? You can’t get rid of Herschel Walker. We won’t score a point if we don’t have Herschel Walker!'” Johnson says.

“I knew that the only way we were going to turn the Cowboys around was with draft picks,” Johnson said.

In fact, Johnson was so intent on acquiring draft picks that he even considered trading future Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin.

“I considered trading every player on our roster — everybody, even a player that I loved, Michael Irvin, who played for me at Miami,” Johnson said. “My attitude was, we were 53 players away from the Super Bowl.”

That's a guy that gets it done.

Shalala admits that she thought the university was vulnerable after news broke about the Nevin Shapiro scandal. And while she says it was a painful experience, she is proud of how they managed the fallout.

"I was pissed off during a large part of it," she said. "I was also angry at the NCAA because they didn't behave in a professional way. I said that publicly. We cooperated from the beginning and we got it done, but it had an effect on our football program. It's going to continue to have an effect for another couple of years."

Dude on a Pale Horse

I want to throw a name out there because I only know a little about him. Feedback appreciated.

Manny Diaz, here's all I know. From Miami, learned under Mickey Andrews (FSU) coaching tree. Was considered one of the top assistants in CF before his stint as the DC at Texas where there D was horrid under Mack Brown. Now at LA Tech. I think he runs multiple fronts 4/3 and 3/4. Thats all I know. Can he recruit? Are his defenses aggressive? Were his successes before Texas like Al's (against nobodies)?

You seem to be the one who cries the loudest when it comes to Butch. But there are definitely others who cry as well so they are welcome to help me out with the following.

This week has been all about the defense and how many rushing yards we allowed against a team we KNOW was going to run the ball, all of the criticism deserved as far as I am concerned.

You've mentioned Butch would do this, Butch would do that.

Both Golden AND Shannon had winning records against the same triple option GT team, Butch does not.

Why is it that between Butch, Shannon, and Golden, Butch is the one who has allowed the HIGHEST rushing yd/game against a GT team running the triple option?

Randy 2-1 - 291.67 / gm
Golden 3-1 - 268.5 / gm
Butch 1-2 - 338.33 / gm

86Cane

UM 48, Cincy 20

j.w.

1. This is all about Butch leaving for Cleveland and they still can't get over it 13yrs later!

2. Which he did nothing wrong when he left.

Posted by: WWIN | October 10, 2014 at 01:16 PM

1. TRUE

2. FALSE

Posted by: SOUP | October 10, 2014 at 01:26 PM

My take:
1. Mostly true. Butch's leaving was the last straw, though. He interviewed with Alabama one or two years before he left, and constantly had his name out there for every job opening in the country trying to get more money and more contract renewals. He pissed UM off with those tactics, to the point where UM insisted on buyout clauses. Also, he took credit for a lot of suspensions that he wasn't in favor of, which earned him a reputation. Many boosters didn't want anything to do with Butch after he left, and there probably still is bitterness. But the UNC scandal also involved a tutor that Butch hired for his own children, thus his (and UNC's) claims that he knew nothing raise a very difficult question- how could he not have known?
2. Mostly false. He did say that he was staying and his timing was absolutely terrible. I'll give him some leeway to the extent he thought they had a contract and maybe UM said something he misinterpreted.

Sarasota 'cane

Haters want to win.

Truthers want to win.

Bootlickers want to win.

WE'RE ALL WINNERS!!!!!

Soup you need to get us all a Canespace participation ribbon!!

Look at CINCO with the stats LMAO!

#"YOUGOTTABEMULTIPLE!"

We all like wins just convincing wins with Golden are hard. I said 9-3. We COULD run the table. But idk. I just will wish for better days. Pointless of calling for heads.. I am not Donna, Blake or a B.O.T so I just have to keep up faith that Miami will be able to return to glory. Rather with Al or anybody else

WWIN

Please don't compare Butch with Shannon and Golden! It's not even CLOSE! We talking about the man that assembled the GREATEST TEAM EVER and who?
