ACC rival Georgia Tech beat Miami in convincing fashion Saturday night in Atlanta. The score is really irrelevant as the Hurricanes proved once again that they are simply NOT ready for prime time.
Here are some key stats from the game from www.hurricanesports.com:
Deon Hill ran 8 yards for a decisive touchdown on fourth down, Zach Laskey rushed a career-high 29 times for 133 yards and Georgia Tech stayed unbeaten with a 28-17 victory over Miami on Saturday night.
It marked the first time in six years that the Yellow Jackets beat Miami, and a couple thousand students rushed the Bobby Dodd Stadium field after the final buzzer to celebrate with players and the marching band.
|
Justin Thomas was held in check statistically but was instrumental in running the spread option offense effectively, helping the Yellow Jackets (5-0, 2-0 Atlantic Conference) earn a nearly 21-minute advantage in time of possession.
Duke Johnson had 100 yards rushing on 14 carries for the Hurricanes (3-3, 1-2 ACC), but freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya couldn't overcome an interception that safety Isaiah Johnson jumped to pick off at the Georgia Tech 10-yard line late in the second quarter.
Thomas, who surprisingly led the nation coming into the game by averaging over 19 yards per completion in coach Paul Johnson's run-first attack, was just 3-of-6 passing for 23 yards entering the fourth.
But following the long timeout before the final quarter, Johnson called for Thomas to hit Tony Zenon on a deep crossing route to convert a long third down. The pass covered 30 yards and set up Hill's TD run on fourth-and-two from the 8.
Kaaya was sacked by linebacker Paul Davis on Miami's next possession, forcing the Hurricanes to punt and give the ball back to clock-consuming Jackets.
Johnson averaged 8.2 yards on 10 carries in the first half, but Georgia Tech's offense did its best to keep the ball out of his hands.
The Jackets had 10-minute advantage in time of possession before eating up nearly the first 7 minutes of the third quarter with a 13-play, 75-yard possession that put Georgia Tech up 21-14 on B.J. Bostic's 2-yard TD run.
Miami caught a break on second down when receiver D'Mauri Jones appeared to lose a fumble at the Jackets' 5, but the call was not overturned, and the Hurricanes cut the lead to four on Michael Badgley's 27-yard field goal.
Miami took a 7-0 lead on the game's opening drive when Braxton Berrios ran a 21-yard corner route past Demond Smith for an uncontested catch in the right side of the end zone.
After Georgia Tech forced a 7-all tie on Thomas' 1-yard run, the Hurricanes went up 14-7 on their third drive when Johnson ran through the left side of the field for a 24-yard touchdown.
The Jackets made it 14-all on the first possession of the second quarter on Zenon's 6-yard run.

Forget player fundamentals VA, how about COACHING FUNDAMENTALS?! This staff has zero clue how to game plan. None. No idea how to scheme, position their player on the field, make in-game adjustments. You can talk about all the player fundamentals you want but given how far out of position these players are, they could be fundamental form tacking, jr high SB winning all stars and they would still suck just as bad. This is 100% coaching ineptitude, nothing to do with players lack of fundamentals. You honestly think you could send all of your jr high all stars to the U and the results would be any different because they are so amazing fundamentally? No way. Your points are valid in general, just not to this situation because we honestly have the worst coaching staff in the nation.

The Head Game Coach of the Candy Canes allowed the game to change when he did not have balls to go for TD- decided to kick field goal. That was turning point in game for me! We could not stop them and we knew we needed TD's to stay with them! TD for TD then hope for mistake.
Had nuts to go for 4th down on our own 39 or so early in game. Then nuts hide late in game...need TD not FG!

Another play I hated and showed no balls.
3rd & 7 late in game.
WR screen. Do they not think that play was on the game film for GT to practice for?!!! SOB.
How about everyone run 8 or 9 yard patterns and try to complete a pass beyond the sticks!

Agree 100%!!! Read my comments all last week......coaches have to know these things to coach them.....schemes, plans, adjustments etc!!!!!
You are what your record says you are; we are not doing a good job of developing skills and fundamentals....cause we do not know them!!!
We are not developing these kids and obviously for a long time....remember Dedrick Epps played for me....he went to thew U.....he knows and tells me horror stories!!!!

Posted by: Old Skool | October 05, 2014 at 12:45 PM
I'd prefer Clappy. His squad (only like 2ish years in existence) lost to Arizona by 3 this yr who beat the crap out Oregon. He may be 0-5 this yr to date, but that's just because he hasn't played Miami. The roadrunners would have a field day with us.

The scheme D-No had to defend the tripple option was retarded and inept. When the dive option goes of for a career high in carries and yards you know you are doing something wrong. First, WHY IN THE HELL DO YOU HAVE THE MIDDLE LINEBACKER WHO IS PLAYING DIVE TO QUARTERBACK (DT'S ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DIVE) 7 F$*KIN YARDS FROM THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE!!!! THAT IS F$*KIN RETARDED!!!! THAT'S WHY THE DIVE OPTION WENT OFF!!!! THAT'S THE FIRST F$*KIN THING YOU HAVE TO STOP IN THE TRIPPLE OPTION. D-NO COULDN'T EVEN GET THAT RIGHT!!! Whoosaw...calming down. Thinking about this again is getting me pissed.

Oakland since 83 SB are horrible....since 2002 kiss of death on them....

me neither --true freshman in his 6th game at a major(?) D1 school, there will be some growing pains. if this is happening in his 3rd year then we need to take a look at BK as J12. Hell, it shouldn't be happening in his 2nd year, but the current staff seems to grade everything on a 4 or 5 or 6 year curve--we can't expect improvement overnight or in 3.5 years.
Posted by: Bermuda Triangle | October 05, 2014 at 01:10 PM
2nd...he had the DT's lined up ineffectively. He had them playing either head up on both guards, or had the in 3 shade and 1 shade alignments. He basically had the trying to engage the guards and shed blocks. You don't do that against the tripple option. You have the DT's lineup on the inside shoulder of both guards and penetrate both gaps while chipping off the center. If this happens and the center doesn't block one of them the tackles should easily occupy the dive man. If they give it to the dive man he had to bounce it outside and the linebacker should be able to easily get to the dive option at an angle and avoid the center. Not rocket science. Plus, your Middle linebacker should be 4 yards off the ball...NOT 7!!!

3rd...The safeties were waaaay to far off the ball. They were at 12 yards. Should have been at 8-9 yards because the way they were playing the option the safeties had pitch. You want the safeties to have to cover as little ground as possible and and decrease the amount of space to make tackling the pitch man easier.

Hank Goldberg on the radio last weekend said a "prominent former Miami HC" told Golden in the offseason that he needs a new DC. Obviously Golden didn't listen. Goldberg went on to say he doesn't see any coaching changes, not even coordinators, because of money issues, but that may change when Shalala leaves. By former prominent Miami head coach one has to assume he means JJ.

Jimmy's approach to defense involves too much freelancing. Guys need to be disciplined, and learn to trust their reads and each other.
Posted by: dj moonbat | October 05, 2014 at 01:17 PM
I love my Canes but it is frustrating. Watched a lot of college football this weekend and saw many (too many to count) of the same players I saw play in high school dominating the college game. The list is very long. I see players now in the NFL that played HS in South Florida, wanted to go to UM, but went somewhere else and got developed. Just remember that 5 of the top 10 HS s that produced NFL talent over the last 20 years are based in South Florida. It hurts when I see this happening and I want my Canes to recruit and develop players but it's not happening.
I just hope we can find a way fo beat Cincinnati and the next three ACC games so we can be somewhat relevant again.
The Canes also recruited good players but they are not developing them. It is really painful to watch.

Finally...Why not bring your strong safety down in the box and create an 8 man front where the DT's are playing on the inside shoulder of the guard, you have 2 middle linebackers to play dive to quarterback, one control left dive and one control right dive, have DE's play QB and safeties and outside LB can play pitch man. Not F$*kin rocket science. Dumbass coaches, dumbass D-No.
Posted by: RARA | October 05, 2014 at 01:20 PM
I'm a literate guy, and I'm really running up against my limits trying to express my frustration without resort to swearing profusely.
At least with Shannon, you knew the poor guy was suffering just like we are. Golden still gives me the vibe that if we would just let up on him for a couple years, everything would be fine.

No, it's better to have just 1 MLB, 7 yards off the ball so he can go EITHER way based on his reads. There's no way an option team could exploit that.
That frees up your safeties to play 10-12 yards off the ball, in case of trickeration.

I think it is a culture of promise that is actually mediocracy; we have not really turned the corner, we are not back. We are Lost in the Wilderness.
The Offense is a work in progress, I think BK will keep improving. The D is just not working. I am not a real stats guy. Yes it is nice to know ppg, rush and pass D and all that, but I look at my record as thats what matters. I can see where I need to get better, adjust, where I am strong and who is doing what.....good info.....but my record will show me what I am doing.
3-3 record shows we lost to 3 good teams; not powerhouses not top 10 but good. 3 wins against 2 teams in it for the money and 1 team that does a lot with average kids. Hmmmmm we are average we can beat on the little guys, but when the bigger guy about our size shows up we fail. Damn what happens when the big badazz comes on the block?
Run lock the doors and bolt the windows!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the haters that supported AG in the beginning, what changed your mind about em'?
Posted by: CaneRock | October 05, 2014 at 01:05 PM
Plain and simple: lack of progress and failure to solve the most obvious problems.
They started in a less than ideal setting, with the NCAA mess starting in year 1 and a lot of players graduating/declaring for the draft in year 2.
But by now, the NCAA "cloud" is gone and the entire roster consists of players they recruited themselves. Add stability at most of the coaching positions and the facility upgrades, and it is resonable that the product on the field should be noticeably better compared to last year. Now don't get me wrong: I don't expect a NC or even an ACC title in the next two or three years. I can even live with an occasional loss in a game we should or could have won.
But here we are, still having one of the worst defenses in all of FBS, and every Saturday seems to be Groundhog Day.
I simply don't see us getting any better. So we need change: Either the current coaching staff changing their approach (they are unwilling to change, however; in fact, they are denying there's something that needs change), or changing the coaching staff.
Posted by: VfB_Cane | October 05, 2014 at 01:30 PM
RARA...YT the 2010 game against GT, it's almost the same alignment, just different assignments. But I agree, no way your MLB should be that exposed.
Posted by: CaneRock | October 05, 2014 at 01:30 PM
I dont either but Phillip Buchanon is raising hell; hes upset big time!!!!!!
I am sure many other Canes are not happy either. God probably having to pin Jerome down; you know he hated losing. Golic saying he had words with JB once......he would have stomped white boys AZZ!!!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | October 05, 2014 at 01:31 PM
the season now comes down to does AG get another year or is this it.
7-5 or better he stays...
6-6 you can flip a coin
5-7 or worse he's gone
keep in mind our last two are Pitt and VA...
we could be 5-5 at that time which helps AG..
Posted by: longtimecanefan | October 05, 2014 at 01:32 PM
DJMB...I didn't usually go on profane rants but sometimes a good 4 letter word is needed to sufficiently communicate your frustrations lol. The offense had its issues but is ok overall. They are heading un the right direction. They played well last night overall. The problem was the defense couldn't get off the field and give them more possessions. The main problem is the defense. The problem is D-No. Golden needs to let him go and give up his defense and hire a new D-Coordinator. Hope the boosters and trustees start a mutiny.
