The next head coach...the right head coach...can get this program back to a 10 win level by year two easily.
If Golden were to leave tomorrow and the right candidate came aboard, he would not find a team bereft of talent.
In fact, it would be far from it. And people like you and others with actual coaching experience (VACane) can speak to the fact that it is not being coached up. I say year two because many of the notable coaches achieved great success in year two as they took over programs that already had good talent waiting for them:
Pete Carroll, USC (Trojans 5-7 year before)
2001: 6-6
2002: 11-1
Bob Stoops, Oklahoma (Sooners 5-6 year before)
1999: 6-5
2000: 13-0 (NC)
Nick Saban, LSU (Tigers are 3-8 year before)
2000: 8-4
2001: 10-3
Nick Saban, Alabama (Tide is 6-7 year before)
2007: 6-6
2008: 12-2
Urban Meyer, Florida (Gators 7-5 year before)
2005: 9-3
2006: 13-1 (National Championship)
Granted other coaches like Harbaugh or Briles took longer than two years, but they inherited programs that were more bereft of talent.
That is NOT the case of Miami next year.

The MH says that UM is probably going to a "second tier" bowl game.
This then begs the question: Are there any "third tier" bowl games?

If you don't understand how ridiculous and ignorant you look when you typed that, it's not worth having a conversation.

I was struck by that headline, too. My mom who went to UM is visiting for Thanksgiving, and we shared a good laugh over that one. We tried to find the bowl with the lamest name. "Famous Idaho Potato Bowl" was my candidate.

No the defense didn't improve, I don't give a damn what the stats say...we're 6-6! Chick got WORSE!...McCord is getting WORSE!...Pierre got WORSE! SHEEZ!, look at the Louisville,NU,GT, & Pitt games to name a few, and look at how they get MANHANDLED! in this PATHETIC! scheme.

Moreover, there are probably four other schools in the ACC (Duke, NC, VA, GT) which, academically, rank higher than UM. (Nevertheless, we are CONVINCINGLY ranked higher, academically, than both L'ville and FSU).

The "Famous Idaho Potato Bowl" was previously the "Humanitarian Bowl", which used to be my choice for the oddest postseason bowl name.

In an advanced technological economy, you can't just throw away inconvenient numbers. I don't like the scheme, but I have to admit that even with massive failures against physical running teams, it is currently #15 in total defense over basically the whole season. (It may even go up, if a good defense or two gets clobbered in a conference championship game.)
I still think we should replace the defensive staff, because -- unlike them -- I think you should adjust your scheme when you play physical running teams, rather than insist that if players made the right reads, everything would work out fine. But arguing that the defense got worse is just not a claim that you can defend with any facts.

Maybe there is an Illegal Alien Bowl on the Mexican border....we could force the Mexicans who are using it as a temporary facility to attend the game..We might get them to go back to Mexico after they watch how bad we play...lol

How about a Politically Correct Bowl. Each team could punt the ball on first down, cheerleaders for each school cheer for the other team, and people hug instead of tackling.

I dont like to jump into the coaching conversation because we all know Golden isnt going anywhere until maybe after 2015.
But I did see alot of names thrown out and would like to add 2 more
1) Tony Dungy
2) Josh Mcdaniels - OC for the Patriots
Thoughts on any of these 2?

this thing (^^^) never works for me.

Never Shannon but if your going fire Coker who won a championship for the U why hold on to Golden?
Posted by: SinisterCane | December 01, 2014 at 11:18 AM
I thought about Josh McDaniels this morning. Interesting pick, but I imagine he would be more interested in another NFL HC position than a college job.
If the Patriots win the SuperBowl this year, he'll probably get another shot somewhere.
Posted by: TonyCane` | December 01, 2014 at 11:19 AM

Until we get a better AD and not a puppet expect more of the same
Posted by: SinisterCane | December 01, 2014 at 11:21 AM
We could have the Dance Off Bowl...instead of watching it as a football game we could have judges in the crowd giving the Canes a grade on how the d line holds their blocks. They could have cards that are marked with numbers 1 to 10 they hold up after each play depending upon long they keep the block and how close they stay to their partner.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 01, 2014 at 11:26 AM
Josh Mcdaniels would be a good hire but we would be searching for another coach within 2 years as i believe the NFl is where he wants to be at.
The one candidate that i like the most was the one Soup presented.
Winston Moss!!!

I've been BLOVIATING since the firing of Coach Coker, that Thee Powers That Be at Miami, Florida DON'T give a " U Know What " ( Thank U Winslow ) about Hurricane football!
Damn, WAKE THE freak' up Cane fandom!! And please connect the proverbial Orange and Green dots ( At least Mr. Campbell's soup has FINALLY connected the dots. LOL ).
Again, back in December 2006 the University President, AD, Board of Trustees and multi-million dollar boosters had the first of TWO GRAND OPPORTUNITIES, to successfully hire a PROVEN, ESTABLISHED head coach. But tragically FAILED in that endeavor! And now serious, loyal Miami fandom have witnessed the results of that FAUX PAS this season under Golden and D'Onofrio.
Flash back to the sad ending of one of Miami, Florida's OWN.
Second grand opportunity in 2010. Enter stage right Thee Carpetbagger's.
Once again Miami's AD, President, Board of Trustee's and yes the multi-million dollar boosters felt all good and comfy in the hiring of a UNPROVEN head coach and his defensive assistant.
Bottom line: Golden and D'Onofrio have now had NINE seasons to PROVE they're capable of coaching at the Power Five level and have shown their INCOMPETENCE time and time and time again!
By the way, Richie Rodriques ( 10-2 Arizona ) doesn't seen to have trouble getting SEVENTEEN starting former " 3-Star " high school stars playing at championship level. Go figure.
And the Wildcats ARE NOT a football school and had two losing seasons prior to the arrival of Richi R. SMH
Oh. Arizona, under Rodriques has won it's last two bowl games ( Finished 8-5 ) and will playing for the PAC-12 championship in Richie's THIRD SEASON in scorching hot Tucson. SMH
By the way, Coach Rodriques earn LESS money than that Carpetbagger NO.1.

Shalala is giving us lip service whenever she speaks about winning. I still expect to hear something today.

VOILA!!!
U can also include that AD and the VAST MAJORITY of the Board of Trustee's too.

Simple Macky Wacky mathmatics.
ACC bowl game revenue, television contracts and the mens NCAA TOURNAMENT!
Those " three cash cows " are WHY the Powers That Be at Miami, Florida are quite CONTENT with Thee Carpetbaggers, and will continue to sigh and shrug their cowardly shoulders and collectively say La-Dee Dee, La-Dee Dah, as the Hurricanes conclude another .500 season or 7-5/8-4 seasons under Golden and D'Onofrio.
Oh. Again, because of the money revenue coming in from the " three Golden parachutes mentioned above, " the attendence figures DON'T matter to the President, AD and Board of Trustee's.

I'm not saying the rushing defense is good, only that it has improved. And incredibly, it's true. Last year, 38th in rushing D. This year, 37th.
The one area where I think Miami might have regressed on defense is first downs surrendered (49th nationally in 2014). I'm looking for the full FBS stats for 2013.

I've been expressing as much for a couple of weeks now. I'm not sure I will come back to the Canes. Too many ties are severed and their lack of interest in winning I simply don't have to put up with. If they don't make drastic changes, I'm filing the paperwork for fan free agency. Miami's new president will have to win me on the free market. Anyone know a good agent? WW?
Posted by: The Dude | December 01, 2014 at 12:05 PM
Yeah, UM's defense was slightly lower ranked in 2014 at total number of first downs. (87th, vs. 84th in 2013.)
But scoring d, total d, rushing d, and passing d are all improved.

Butch Davis' "Harvard" comment is a non story.
Posted by: The Dude | December 01, 2014 at 12:31 AM
Not sure about that- he has been saying that line since the 80's when he as an asst. at UM. And everyone who heard it back then thought he was dead serious, it wasn't the joke that he made it out to be. For a school that has referred to itself as the "Harvard of the South" that is not going to play well.

Remember when many on here ripped me for saying for years our facilities have been a gigantic disadvantage?
The answer was always that they'd done it for years without them.
I'd always answer its a new ballgame, an arms race where the stakes get higher by the year. Manny's article shows how much it's hurt.
I disagree the administration doesn't care. They've spent millions upgrading them, with more on the way. The massive upgrades to Sun Life will help too.
They just waited WAY, WAY too long in doing it. That was a massive failure on their part.
With regards to Golden, they're just not going to saddle his remaining five years on a new President. He'll have next year, like it or not.
