I still think Al Golden can succeed here. He just needs the $ to hire top end assistants and coordinators.

Said it before and still believe that Golden is more of a CEO type coach, he MUST be surrounded with good assistants and coordinators.

And that is not a knock on any head coach. Look at Alabama, both the OC and DC would be considered great hire as a HC. Is there any wonder why Nicky Satan is successful at Alabama?

Or Urban Liar when he had Charlie Strong and Dan Mullen as assistant coaches at UFag.

Not a coincidence that STRONG programs with successful HEAD coaches are surrounded by OTHER TALENTED coaches. That is something that Coker, Shannon and now Golden have not had.

OPEN THE POCKET BOOKS!!!

The Dude

Title of this blog should be "Miami Has No Options."

UMike

Nothing will change fellas... if the admin isnt pressuring anything, Golden will maintain the process is working, blame every single thing possible but himself and we will be stuck AGAIN next year with an average team at best.

DeeCane

Its being reported that Al Golden, coach D, coach Hurlie Brown, and Coach Williams are at Westminster to see Tim Irvin right now....

We may not get our wish to fire a few coaches....smh

The Dude

I think Swasey is an A+ strength and conditioning coach. Every coach has gotten exactly what they wanted from him.

Everyone else is very debateable. I do like Kehoe also but it may just be loyalty talking. The guy puts guys in the NFL though. I think the biggest thing with his group is there needs to be more of a connection/ communication with his group and the QB. Good QBs almost never take sacks no matter who the OLmen are.

UMike

Golden has said MANY thimes that he runs the ST.

Swasey is not a problem, he does what's asked and does it well.

The DB COACH is HORRIBLE!!!!!!

No way Fentress should have been on the field, maybe on ST and that's it! I know we were short on numbers with injuries but I'd rather play Gayot, he has to be better. If not we are real trouble next year. Our safety and DB development has been bad for years.

Posted by: Da U N Houston | December 01, 2014 at 01:43 PM

And is it me, or are our DB's the worst and getting their head around? They NEVER seem to look back or make a play on the ball.

dj moonbat

But that doesnt mean I have to put the same energy into it.

Posted by: UMike | December 01, 2014 at 01:36 PM

Yeah. I'd be happier knowing they started over with a new coaching staff -- hope springs eternal! -- but I'll just use autumn Saturdays for something else until things have a chance to improve. I'm into college football because of UM, not the other way around.

The Dude

Its Miami or bust for me. I will root for teams like FIU also simple cause their from Miami, but its always going to be Miami or Soddy Daisy for me, win or lose. But that doesnt mean I have to put the same energy into it.

Posted by: UMike | December 01, 2014 at 01:36 PM

I totally get this, you're from there. I'm from SoCal and moved to SoFL when I was 16. Butch had a pretty good team then. It really took of in 2000 and I fell in love. Loved the 2000 Canes and thought we were cheated. 2001 we won a 'ship. 2002 we were robbed. 2003 we were loaded. On and on you know the story. Miami stopped loving me back at some point and a bad marriage is a bad marriage at this point. No they don't care? It's not something I HAVE to deal with. No one can say I'm bandwagon or front running. It's just not working for me, this long distance relationship, lol.

Lol. Nah, it makes sense for me though. At least they want to win games. 8-4 with only 57 scholarship athletes available. They fired Kiffin because they weren't winning enough. It's an easy transition because they are the Miami of the west coast and I'm from SoCal. Miami has every opportunity to get me back after/if I file the paperwork with my agent.

UMike

Swasey does not have the freedom to simply do what he wants with these players (or at least I think he doesnt)... he simply goes by the coaching staff's wishes. He has done a great job at bulking current players up, not his fault the staff went overboard on some players.

SinisterCane

WQAM went zero dark 30 again, Hmmmmmmmmmm

UMike

If Golden was to fire D'No and bring in someone else AND BE COMPLETELY HANDS OFF and let them bring in their own D staff.... brings in a ST coach or promotes someone maybe he stays and it improves...but imo he will never know how to run a program like Miami, he needs to be up north somewhere or back at Temple

j.w.

A ton of former players swear by Swasey and come back to train with him in the offseason instead of with their own teams.

If I had to rank our problems, he wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list.

Posted by: Go Canes | December 01, 2014 at 01:17 PM
Their needs are a lot different than what a 18-20 year old needs. Shoot, A-Rod swore by him as well, it seems that anyone who doesn't need to get (naturally) stronger or bigger does just fine with Swasey, so he knows conditioning.

WWIN

And guess who coaches STs. Talk about irony of the Carpetbagger sort.

Posted by: TheeMackJones | December 01, 2014 at 01:19 PM

This is why Golden is in no position to fire anybody, cuz he's been the worst coach on staff! The only coaching change he can make is bringing in a new Special Teams coach!

TheeMackJones

O-C is still taking the time, to conjure up RATIONALIZATIONS on WHY he continues to defend Golden. SMH

dj moonbat

This administration has already given its support to Golden and probably doesn't feel the need to say it again.

Posted by: UMike | December 01, 2014 at 12:59 PM

I think it's next to impossible that The Powers That Be aren't currently besieged with demands to do something. They are probably on the phone RIGHT NOW with somebody angry about the direction of the program. They know there's a need to say something. They just don't know what they can say that will make them look like they've got some sort of decent plan.

j.w.

Is there any whisper at all out there that a change is coming? Any? Any? At all?

Posted by: The Dude | December 01, 2014 at 12:45 PM
Nothing. All quiet. If you want the "so there's a chance," hope, there have been no votes of confidence, no pats on the back, no public support, nor any response to the numerous calls for Golden's job either.

WWIN

Ohio_Cane, you okay????

TheeMackJones

Special teams has been absolutely the worst unit for a long, long, long, long time. Akin to the Miami 2011 defensive unit being the worst unit since the 1970's

And guess who coaches STs. Talk about irony of the Carpetbagger sort.

Under no circumstances should you become a fan of the University of Spoiled Children.

Far better to step away from college football entirely for a few years while you wait for Miami to get its **** together. You'll pick up an extra 3 months of Saturdays per year.

Does Swasey finally get the ax? it's time for a change in that department as well

I dont agree... I think he does what the coaches tell him. They wanted huge guys and they got it. RS didnt care and it showed etc.

UMike

CR... they dont care... they know they are locked into a long contract and will have to pay big time to let him go. Besides the more they come out and defend the worse it looks to recruits. They will be quiet as they already gave Golden their support

WWIN

EVERYBODY...

Rank our units on the team, Offense, Defense, and Special Teams from best to worst (#1 being the best, #3 being worst)

UMike

I think Go Canes is right, no change is coming. This administration has already given its support to Golden and probably doesn't feel the need to say it again.

Leadership already did. James said Golden will be back, so today in their eyes it's business as usual.

Coaches are out recruiting right now and they'll prepare for the bowl game as any other team will.

Is anyone going to address anything? This is crippling for the fan base and The U has NOTHING to say? Al has NOTHING to say? Blake has NOTHING to say? Donna has NOTHING to say? Where in the f*ck is the leadership of this U? Miami is burning and these people are playing fiddles!

Go Canes

There is no change coming at the head coaching position.

UMike

I honestly dont think a change will happen, just cause the money involved and with DS leaving...not because he deserves any more time. Oh well

mi@mic@ne

On that ranking chart we were ranked 100 on red zone offense and 70th on red zone d... our time of possession was also low at 29.07....These are the stats that show why we lost 6 games...

But I beg to disagree. Because the current President and AD and wise elders on the Board of Trustee's STILL want the beloved Golden.

And as long as the Powers That Be have the final say so regarding Golden. Miami will continue to a Coastal Division BOTTOM FEEDER.

The Dude

SOUP,

A big concern I have with Winston Moss is that he hasn't even been a coordinator at all. He's the Assistant Head Coach of one of the best teams in the NFL to one of the best coaches. Do we really know what he is responsible for?

Go Canes

He cant just be out recruiting with the rest of the coaches?

Total Revenues for Teams minus Total Expenses for Teams (Line 12-Line 8)

Men's Teams:$5,074,486
Women's Teams:-$7,627,015

UpNorthCane27

Golden not going on the radio today is a soft ass move.

Could mean two things.

1. He is out meeting with recruits and parents letting them know he is gone but that they should stay committed to the U.

or

2. he is just a soft ass dude who can't show his face when the whole state of miami wants him gone.

Looking into my murky, fuzzy distorted Crystal Ball. I SEE-r your Miami, Florida Hurricanes facing mighty Florida from the SEC.

So it looks like the Canes will spend some time in small town Shreveport, Louisiana come December 27th.

Oh well, at least the Hurricanes will be feasting on some tasty Cajun cuisine.

Big deal. (Sarcasm) he said something true. He graduated a lot of players at Miami.

UMike

When you take a DE and blow him up to the size of a DT, it will be hard for him to get many sacks.

Go Canes

Remember when many on here ripped me for saying for years our facilities have been a gigantic disadvantage?

The answer was always that they'd done it for years without them.

I'd always answer its a new ballgame, an arms race where the stakes get higher by the year. Manny's article shows how much it's hurt.

I disagree the administration doesn't care. They've spent millions upgrading them, with more on the way. The massive upgrades to Sun Life will help too.

They just waited WAY, WAY too long in doing it. That was a massive failure on their part.

With regards to Golden, they're just not going to saddle his remaining five years on a new President. He'll have next year, like it or not.

TheeMackJones

And look at that article UMike posted, Chad Thomas had 0 SACKS! He's getting worse from JUMP!

Butch Davis' "Harvard" comment is a non story.

Posted by: The Dude | December 01, 2014 at 12:31 AM
Not sure about that- he has been saying that line since the 80's when he as an asst. at UM. And everyone who heard it back then thought he was dead serious, it wasn't the joke that he made it out to be. For a school that has referred to itself as the "Harvard of the South" that is not going to play well.

TheeMackJones

dj moonbat

Yeah, UM's defense was slightly lower ranked in 2014 at total number of first downs. (87th, vs. 84th in 2013.)

But scoring d, total d, rushing d, and passing d are all improved.

I've been expressing as much for a couple of weeks now. I'm not sure I will come back to the Canes. Too many ties are severed and their lack of interest in winning I simply don't have to put up with. If they don't make drastic changes, I'm filing the paperwork for fan free agency. Miami's new president will have to win me on the free market. Anyone know a good agent? WW?

Posted by: CaneRock | December 01, 2014 at 11:14 AM

I'm not saying the rushing defense is good, only that it has improved. And incredibly, it's true. Last year, 38th in rushing D. This year, 37th.

The one area where I think Miami might have regressed on defense is first downs surrendered (49th nationally in 2014). I'm looking for the full FBS stats for 2013.

Manny's article basically states the football program is doomed. If the administration doesn't give a fukk about football we the fans are fighting a losing battle.

Simple Macky Wacky mathmatics.

ACC bowl game revenue, television contracts and the mens NCAA TOURNAMENT!

Those " three cash cows " are WHY the Powers That Be at Miami, Florida are quite CONTENT with Thee Carpetbaggers, and will continue to sigh and shrug their cowardly shoulders and collectively say La-Dee Dee, La-Dee Dah, as the Hurricanes conclude another .500 season or 7-5/8-4 seasons under Golden and D'Onofrio.

Oh. Again, because of the money revenue coming in from the " three Golden parachutes mentioned above, " the attendence figures DON'T matter to the President, AD and Board of Trustee's.

I've been BLOVIATING since the firing of Coach Coker, that Thee Powers That Be at Miami, Florida DON'T give a " U Know What " ( Thank U Winslow ) about Hurricane football!

Damn, WAKE THE freak' up Cane fandom!! And please connect the proverbial Orange and Green dots ( At least Mr. Campbell's soup has FINALLY connected the dots. LOL ).

Again, back in December 2006 the University President, AD, Board of Trustees and multi-million dollar boosters had the first of TWO GRAND OPPORTUNITIES, to successfully hire a PROVEN, ESTABLISHED head coach. But tragically FAILED in that endeavor! And now serious, loyal Miami fandom have witnessed the results of that FAUX PAS this season under Golden and D'Onofrio.

Flash back to the sad ending of one of Miami, Florida's OWN.

Second grand opportunity in 2010. Enter stage right Thee Carpetbagger's.

Once again Miami's AD, President, Board of Trustee's and yes the multi-million dollar boosters felt all good and comfy in the hiring of a UNPROVEN head coach and his defensive assistant.

Bottom line: Golden and D'Onofrio have now had NINE seasons to PROVE they're capable of coaching at the Power Five level and have shown their INCOMPETENCE time and time and time again!

By the way, Richie Rodriques ( 10-2 Arizona ) doesn't seen to have trouble getting SEVENTEEN starting former " 3-Star " high school stars playing at championship level. Go figure.

And the Wildcats ARE NOT a football school and had two losing seasons prior to the arrival of Richi R. SMH

Oh. Arizona, under Rodriques has won it's last two bowl games ( Finished 8-5 ) and will playing for the PAC-12 championship in Richie's THIRD SEASON in scorching hot Tucson. SMH

By the way, Coach Rodriques earn LESS money than that Carpetbagger NO.1.

UpNorthCane27

HC- Winston Moss
OC- James Coley (last chance to really show up)

We could have the Dance Off Bowl...instead of watching it as a football game we could have judges in the crowd giving the Canes a grade on how the d line holds their blocks. They could have cards that are marked with numbers 1 to 10 they hold up after each play depending upon long they keep the block and how close they stay to their partner.

SinisterCane

Until we get a better AD and not a puppet expect more of the same

TonyCane`

SinisterCane...standards were higher then. And we were on a clear downward trend with him.

I thought about Josh McDaniels this morning. Interesting pick, but I imagine he would be more interested in another NFL HC position than a college job.

If the Patriots win the SuperBowl this year, he'll probably get another shot somewhere.

SinisterCane

Never Shannon but if your going fire Coker who won a championship for the U why hold on to Golden?

I dont like to jump into the coaching conversation because we all know Golden isnt going anywhere until maybe after 2015.

Maybe there is an Illegal Alien Bowl on the Mexican border....we could force the Mexicans who are using it as a temporary facility to attend the game..We might get them to go back to Mexico after they watch how bad we play...lol
