When you really think about it, hate is really a very strong word.
Most long time Miami Hurricane fans hate certain teams based on their history. When ranked in order from most hated it usually looks something like this:
- Florida
- Notre Dame
- Ohio State
- Alabama
- LSU
The one team that Miami has the most history with that is surprisingly absent from this list is FSU.
Correct me if I am wrong but even though Miami and Florida State have played in a heated rivalry since the early 1980s it just seems that it is hard to muster the same level of hatred towards the Seminoles as the other teams on the most hated list.
Still, with the biggest game that the Hurricanes play every year on the schedule this weekend you would think that UM fans could manage to generate some serious hate towards FSU, right?
Well, according to some fans, the answer is definitely yes.
When Miami hosts FSU in Miami at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday at 8 PM, the hate meter will probably be off the scale. But be very careful haters, it has already been announced that police presence will be higher than ever this year to prevent problems between rival fans.
In this intense conference rivalry known for it's close games, the wide rights and even a wide left for good measure, and some serious beat downs by both sides in different years, there will be some vicious hits by those wearing orange and green and those in garnet and gold.
When it is over the winner will claim both bragging rights and recruiting superiority over their defeated in-State rival. But until the kickoff it is officially "Hate Week" between Miami and FSU.
We wouldn't have it any other way.
First?

The last time Miami defeated Florida State at home in football, future quarterback Brad Kaaya had just started third grade in Southern California, future running back Duke Johnson was about to turn 11 in Miami and a hurricane had just forced the Hurricanes to reschedule their annual game against the archrival Seminoles.
The date was Sept.10, 2004.
“Wow, it’s been 10 years since we last beat Florida State at home?” said Brock Berlin, the quarterback who orchestrated UM’s first victory as an Atlantic Coast Conference member — a 16-10 overtime win against FSU on a Friday night in a sold-out Orange Bowl. “I remember being so excited to be part of that. Florida State-Miami — there’s nothing like it.’’
Miami (6-3, 3-2 ACC) and FSU (9-0, 6-0) are less than a week away from their 59th meeting since 1951, a prime-time showdown at 8 p.m. Saturday at Sun Life Stadium, where the Hurricanes are 0-3 in their past three regular-season meetings. On Jan.1, 2004, following the 2003 season, UM defeated FSU in the Orange Bowl at Sun Life, then called Pro Player Stadium.

It was always hard to hate FSU because of Bowden.. How could ya hate that guy? And they played us!! Jameis is doing his best to facilitate the hating though.

It ain't a rivalry until you BEAT EM'!...and we ain't beat em' in awhile...BEAT EM'!
Posted by: CaneRock | November 10, 2014 at 07:13 AM
FSU is that worthy opponent you respect, but you want to beat every time. That opponent and the battle keeps you sharp.
I loved Bowden. What a great man. As much as we beat them, they never stopped putting us on their schedule every year, while the gators and ND run scared. I am not a big fan of Jimbo's negative recruiting and Jamies criminality, but they do man up every year and play us so I respect that
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | November 10, 2014 at 07:23 AM
Never had a problem with FSU.
They've never brought up dropping us even though without our head to head matchups our places in history may have been reversed.
Posted by: Go Canes | November 10, 2014 at 07:41 AM
I don't hate FSU until that Tomahawk Chop/Chant business starts up. I think all right-minded people can agree that the drone of Ah-ah-ah-ah-ahhh...Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah... is just about as annoying as anything in the world of sports.
I'm pretty sure I WOULD hate FSU if, like some other teams on that list, they had beaten good/great Miami teams in big games. But for whatever reason, when a good/great Miami team has run into a good/great FSU team, the results have tended to be great games that ended up with UM on top.
Certainly, it's not FSU's fans that keep me from hating them. They're only a rung below Gator fans, Buckeye Fans and Golden Domers in the douchebag fan rankings.

@mattyports: Per NCAA, no power 5 team’s schedule has a worse cumulative record than Duke (32-52). Future schedule (7-17) behind just 2 P5 teams.
@mattyports: Also per NCAA, teams on Miami's schedule are currently 54-29. Only Auburn, Arkansas and Ole Miss have it harder. http://t.co/BXukD2Lf1V
@Tom_Symonds: Since 1980, @CanesFootball has played host to 23 Top-10 ranked teams. In those 23 games, Miami holds an impressive 19-4 record #notbad.

Hurricanes LT Ereck Flowers practicing, but availability for Florida State unknown
By Matt Porter, caneswatch.blog.palmbeachpost.com
November 10th, 2014
CORAL GABLES – Ereck Flowers clearly wants to play against Florida State. The question is whether his knee injury will let him.
Flowers, UM’s standout left tackle, was present and participating Monday as players began preparing for Saturday’s prime-time home game against the Seminoles (8 p.m., ABC). Flowers missed the Hurricanes’ most recent game with a knee injury.
His availability is one topic coach Al Golden will address Monday with reporters. Golden said in a WQAM radio appearance Monday morning he would not count out Flowers returning.
Flowers, a 6-foot-6, 322-pound junior, suffered a meniscus injury Oct. 23 against Virginia Tech and had a minor surgical procedure. He missed UM’s 47-20 win over North Carolina on Nov. 1. The Hurricanes (6-3, 3-2 ACC) were off last week as the Seminoles (9-0, 5-0) improved their winning streak to 25 games, the nation’s longest active run.
Also seen at practice: sophomore running back Gus Edwards, who suffered a sprained ankle against UNC. He was seen carrying a slight limp while running at full speed. He is expected to play.
* According to UM, a few thousand tickets have not been sold as of Monday morning. StubHub.com lists 5,762 tickets available beginning at $118 and change. VividSeats.com has tickets beginning at $94. SeatGeek.com has tickets beginning at $105.
* ABC’s broadcast crew for Saturday is Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Heather Cox.

Hope you all are well.
Tough game this weekend; we played perhaps the toughest and equal team we have played in a long time. They do the same stuff I do...old school, fundamental run the ball play great D man up football. We scored first, then they drove one near half time. It was 7-7 all of the third quarter....good weather intense match up!!!!
Fundamentals win games in the clutch, no trickery or tomfoolery. We made a big stand that had them backed up; they punted, but my WR caught it on the run at the 50 and took it to the 10. 2 plays later we punched it in off tackle to take a 14-7 lead. They tried a reverse on the ensuing KO but our coverage was really good and we had them at the 15. They went to their spread stuff.....thats when I get you. I pressured with the 44 stack and 46 D sets and they went 0-3....2 incompletes had to be thrown away due to the pressure and tight man....3rd down we sacked them at the 5. 4th and 20....games getting away from them...just tried reverse on KO....I smelled a rat....4 minutes+ left....and of course I have all my TOs so do they.....I burn one, call my D over and tell them watch the fake no way punt with 4 and change left in a game to go to the conference title game.....but lets fake their fake....I send my guy deep....all my guys calling return return.....we line up dead set still....snap a little low, they shuttle it to protector who gets 3...we take it on the 8.
Next play I spread 4 wide 2 each way motion my tailback from left to right form the flank.....31 trap up the middle with my fullback....TD!!!!!
They get it back go 4 throws no completes as pressure is killer!!! We kick a 18 yarder on third down....just for practice to know we can do it...
We are playing for Southern Conference title after knocking off the 2 best teams in the tournament who can play with us the last 2 weeks.
We play a good team Sat...they are the Cinderella as they have pulled 2 upsets as better teams over looked them. Guy is a great coach, young kid who played HS with some of my guys 15 years ago. They are good and it will be another challenge, a hard days work.
If we can find a way to win, we go to SB. Busy week to prepare, hope Canes are getting ready for FSU. Go Canes Beat FSU!!!
