On and off field, UM’s Deon Bush helps dad cope with illness
By Manny Navarro, www.miamiherald.com

Gary Bush is getting the chance to see his son, Deon, finally have the type of season he always knew was in him.

Deon is healthy, making plays all over the field for an improved Miami Hurricanes defense, and resembling a grown-up version of the hard-hitting freshman All-American safety that was once a gem in Al Golden’s first full-fledged recruiting class.

Gary has savored every minute of it, every tackle, every big play, and he says he’s going to continue to do that until God tells him it’s time to go.

“Every time I think about The U getting ready to play against Florida State, it lifts my spirits up,” said Bush Sr., a 52-year-old former science teacher at Miami Southridge who is fighting liver cancer for the second time since he was first diagnosed in April 2013.

“I live for football. I don’t know what I’m going to do after football. There’s nothing else I look forward to in life.”

Bush Sr., a former receiver who played alongside Hall of Famer Jerry Rice at Mississippi Valley State, actually has a lot he looks forward to. He has been active in his community for years, coaching and serving as a mentor to many kids. But this second bout with cancer (it returned in March, eight months after he had surgery to remove part of his liver and gallbladder) has understandably hit him hard.

He says he’s in a shell and hasn’t told many friends that the cancer has returned “because I didn’t want to put my problems on other people.”

An ultra-fit husband and father of three athletes (eldest son GaryJr. played receiver at Purdue, and 14-year-old daughter Nya starts as a freshman for Miami Southridge’s girls’ basketball team), Bush used to get up nearly every day at 4:30a.m., run five miles at the gym and lift weights before he got sick.

Now, his son, UM’s second-leading tackler (45 tackles) who ranks fifth nationally with four forced fumbles, pushes Gary to get out of bed on Sunday mornings to go with him to church. Deon, 21, moved back home in August so he could see his father every day and push him to not give up hope.

“I just try to get him up so he can stay up, stay positive about everything,” Deon said. “I just try to live every day with him like it’s the last, make the best out of every situation.”

Deon, his father said, serves as the man of the house. He does the chores Gary used to do while caring for his sister and 15-year-old cousin, Jayvon Colbert, the seventh child Gary said the Bushes have taken in over the years.

“I know it’s a hardship on us now, but it’s something my wife [Michele] and I have always done, and we believe God put on us to try and help kids’ lives,” Gary said.

Each day, Gary said, Deon wakes up at 5a.m. and drives from their home in Cutler Bay back to Coral Gables so he can go to school and play football. When he’s done with school and football, Deon returns home and does whatever is needed around the house, such as driving his sister or cousin to practice or picking up the yard.

“There’s not one game that I go out there and I don’t think about my dad or my mom,” Deon said. “She goes through a lot of stuff, as well. Before I go out on that field, I think I’ve got to have a big game to impress them. But then I don’t try to do too much because I just try to play hard, do my job, try to make plays. It fuels emotion after I make a play because I’m doing it for my team and my family.”

Defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio credited Bush’s improved play at safety — a very complex and important position in UM’s scheme — as a big reason the Canes defense is better.

“I think you’re seeing Deon show up,” D’Onofrio said. “He’s developed into a really good tackler. That’s really changed over time. When he was younger he would go in there more reckless. His head might be down and he’d hurt his shoulder, his neck. He’s not having injuries because he’s bigger and stronger and trusting his technique. I’m very proud of Deon and what he’s done so far this year.”

Bush recorded his first career interception last year when he picked off Heisman winner Jameis Winston in Tallahassee. He has recorded turnovers in each of his last two games — a fumble recovery and an interception. He credits his success this season to his teammates. He said they’ve been doing their jobs, so he has simply been doing his.

A sports management major, Deon is on pace to graduate in December 2015, his father said. Leaving early for the NFL after just three years at UM isn’t something the junior has thought about, Gary said. He’s focused on his grades and other things.

Right now, Gary said, his cancer is “stable,” but he’s also praying he gets better news soon. He would love be around to see Deon achieve all of his dreams. Beating No.2-ranked FSU (9-0) Saturday is certainly one of them.

“I wouldn’t miss this for nothing,” Gary said. “I just asked the lord to help me through this week right here so I can watch this game. I’ll be right up there where I always am with all the parents cheering hard.”

Game of the Week: Florida State at Miami

In what would likely appear to be a major upset in the minds of most college football fans, yet would be just a mild upset in sportsbooks, Miami should win outright over Florida State in Week 12 of the 2014 college football season. The Hurricanes have flown under the radar for most of the season in the relatively unheralded ACC. All three of their losses have come on the road to teams that have combined for just six losses on the season. Furthermore, a deeper dig into the Hurricanes' numbers uncovers a team that is experienced and can be dominant in many ways and yet has improved significantly recently in the ways in which they are young and previously struggled. Regardless of whether this is viewed as a rivalry game or not and no matter where this game is played, Miami presents a difficult matchup for Florida State.

HS Football in florida seems to be fubar.

A football coach who forfeits a game because he doesn't like the calls, probably should not be a coach period.

FHSAA is a joke. They're enablers. They do nothing unless it hits them in the face. Meantime street agents, some of them coaches, run wild down here. But of the most corrupting influences, it's the SEC money, and their bagmen/agents that have made this a cesspool.

CaneRock

Ryan Bartow is talking about this like it's a new phenomenon. Kids have been freely transferring from school to school ever since I can remember. No holds barred on the west side of I-95!

"big money college programs"...

Sarasota 'cane

I would estimate that big time college programs have cost UM a title game or two since 2001. When you look back at kids like Patrick Peterson who were "canes to the bone" until they and their families were enticed with money and jobs to go elsewhere, I think my estimate of two title games may even be low.

Go Canes

@RyanBartow: From mass de-commits, to the most HS transfers, insane speed/charisma, handlers, 3rd parties, U name it. Never a dull moment in 305/954

The "big money" schools are ruining college football and now they appear to be ruining South Florida H.S. football.

The state legislators should make it it a felony to rep a kid whether they are registered agents or not.

1) The oddest forfeit of the season didn’t even last a half — It may be awhile before we fully learn what inspired Champagnat Catholic, of Hilaeah, Fla., to forfeit against IMG Academy while still in the second quarter. Yes, IMG had already built up a virtually insurmountable 48-8 lead. But did Champagnat throw the white flag because it didn’t want to play the role of whipping boy, or was it because of concern about injury or numbers? One report claimed that Champagnat walked off the field to protest a second quarter call that the coaching staff disagreed with, but that is from one account. Only time will tell if that tells the full story.

Brad has a ways to go before he hits his ceiling, and I'd bet Jameis is close to his.

Seriously, I think Kaaya has a shot at being UM's best QB ever. He's putting up very respectable numbers without spending a single offseason working in Coley's offense. Or in UM's weight room.

If he doesn't have a sophomore slump, he is absolutely going to tear **** up for the next couple of years.

TALLAHASSEE – The Tallahassee Police Department says Florida State running back Karlos Williams is not being charged after a domestic battery investigation.

The police released the incident report Wednesday detailing the investigation, which ended because “without a statement or additional evidence there is no way to further this case.” The case remains “Open/Inactive.”

So the Tallahassee police conduction yet another investigation and didn't press charges. Of course not, that's their job.

Instead of ring toss at the tailgates, they should have FSU specific games crab leg stealing, video erasing, bb shooting, girlfriend beating in which one uses an inflatable doll perhaps an impact plate, sledgehammer and bell or perhaps sex chanting in which one stands on a table and yells "F*** Her Right in the P****" at the FSU female supporters. That would make them feel right at home.

WWIN

Fsu SUCKS!!!!

People are giving em too much credit. They are pretty much a 1 man show, take away Squintston and you have the Clemson game!

SJMPARMAN

We are not good at Kick of Returns. But we have only allowed the one td, and the return average is only 23.46. FSU is much better at 18.24. Advantage to them. I didn't say all stats favored them and you are right to point to special teams deciding the game.

How many wide rights, wide lefts and other big special teams plays have won these games. I mean, Jimmy Johnson encouraged his starters to play special teams in big games. I always though that was a good plan.

Lurker

For us to win on Sarurday, every starter will have to play the absolute best game of their careers, and the coaches will have to be almost 100% on their play selection and strategy. Also, our special teams, kickoffs included, will have to be significantly better than they've been all year.

Do that, keep it close, and we have a shot. Remember, FSU has the deeper and more talented team, have won a bunch in crunch time, are the defending champs, and will come out with a huge chip on their shoulders. They have something to prove this week, as if playing a rival isn't enough motivation.

SJMP, I like Butch and I appreciate what he did to bring in the talent to win our last ship.

But the perception, based in part on his own missteps, is that he's tainted. He will never be our coach. He wouldn't even be a candidate for this or any other major jobs, and that was even before all the latest stuff came out.

If for some reason Golden leaves, Butch will not be on our short list, or anybody else's that matters. That's not hate, that's just how I'm sure it is.

Hate to say it, but that's true. FSU is the only relevant team in the conference. If we beat them, who else is there? Duke? clempson?Nothing we can do will put us in the national conversation this year. If we win, and build on the victory maybe next year will be different... the ACC is weak.

CaneRock

One thing I do know going into this game, FSU's gonna win the kicking game. Maybe we can break one on a punt, but I don't see us getting many opportunities on KOR.

WWIN

Got em both now! Done!

SJMPARMAN

I respect Butch Davis in the same way I respect Howard, Jimmy, Dennis for building championship teams at UM but I am a Golden fan this week. I don't think no matter how many times he repeats his position that Lurker will ever convince Butch Davis is some evil guy. He's just not that to me.

I have a sneaky suspicion we win the game. Big games are won when your best player helps you win the game. Duke will get his yards. Duke is number 7 in rushing yards with 1213 yards. Karlos Williams is 110 with 520 yards. Yearby is 157th with 421 yards. Dalvin Cook is 161st with 416 yards. Miami averages 199.3 yards per game rushing. FSU averages 129.9 yards per game rushing. We have a huge advantage in the running game.

In pass efficiency, Kaaya is 11th with 2087 yards, with 20 tds and 9 ints and a 157.6 QBR. Winston is 21st with 2540 yards, with 17 tds and 11 ints, and a 150.8 QBR. I don't see this matchup as much more than a draw. Both guys will make their plays and a mistake here or there.

So if Miami can run, can FSU defend it? Rushing defense stats. Miami - 31st, allowing 131.9 yards a game on the ground. FSU - 35th allowing 135.7 yards per game. In the games I have watched FSU this year, it seems they are more vulnerable to the run compared to the last few years.

So if Miami and FSU can pass, who can defend better? Miami is 18th in pass efficiency defense, allowing 9 touchdowns with 8 ints and a 107 rating. FSU is 65th in pass efficiency defense, allowing 15 tds to 9 ints and a 126.8 rating. Miami is 11th in total defense and FSU is 49th.

Stats are just stats and all but some of them seem to favor us. I like our chances.

A win not only makes this season a good one with a strong ending potentially for the first time in years, but also begins to show Golden can win a big one and influences recruits to potentially help the next few years. HUGE game, and what went on at UNC doesn't matter to me right now.

BTW, I think both UNC's and UM's recent scandals pale in comparison to MIami's '90s Pell Grant scandal. There, UM not only had NCAA violations, but an employee defrauding the taxpayers.

As a canes fan, you buy into this? These were allegations that were NEVER substantiated, or don't you keep up? I can't believe the ignorance of some of our own fans.

Lurker, they were nonetheless allegations, and CaneRock was asking whether UNC's recent TRUE allegations stacked up against those FALSE ones.

If you're going to be a dick, read more carefully.

As a canes fan, you buy into this? These were allegations that were NEVER substantiated, or don't you keep up? I can't believe the ignorance of some of our own fans. The only thing that was documented to be true were things like meals, used washer and dryer, all basically penny ante stuff. All the hooker, abortion, etc, stuff never even came close to being shown to be true.

Or did anyone here actually read the NCAA report?

Moonbat to the rescue!!!

WWIN? The 12%bus was just fine, why U do that?

Now if you provided classes taught by hookers, then you'd really have something to offer the modern college athlete.
