Stephanie Wagner had her incredibly impressive run at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships come to an end Saturday afternoon.
The University of Miami junior dropped a hard fought match in the semifinals of the Singles Main Draw at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
“Stephanie is an incredible competitor that wants to reach her next level and I know she won’t back down until she does,” Miami assistant coach Laura Vallverdu said. “As a coach, I couldn’t ask for anything else. She is a huge part of our success.”
Wagner, who is No. 18 in the ITA single rankings, faced California’s Maegan Manasse, ranked No. 43 by the ITA and seeded fifth in the draw. The pair split the first six games of the match, but Manasse went on to take the opening set 6-3.
The first two games of the second set went to Wagner, but Manasse bounced by winning the next two to even things up. For the rest of the set, neither player was able to win consecutive games.
That included Wagner breaking Manasse’s serve to take a 5-4 lead, only to see the Golden Bear even it up. Wagner then broke Manasse’s serve once again to go up 6-5 in the second set, but the sophomore tied it up after that as well.
Ultimately, Manasse was able to do just enough to win the match in a second set tiebreaker, ending the semifinal with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory.
SATURDAY RESULTS
Singles Main Draw—Semifinals
No. 5 Maegan Manasse (California) def. Stephanie Wagner, 6-3, 7-6 (4)

Canes coaches are still recruiting Phillips from MIAMI central. That would be a huge get. Everyone is saying he is an FSU lean because of Cook, but I am happy to see the effort put in on the recruiting trail by Ice and Carroll. They definitely are trying to get the best prospects

It's a neat stat, but I don't know why he's so surprised. UM's had a giant trailerload of All-Stars over the years. What has FSU produced in terms of scorers? Brad Johnson? Warrick Dunn? Laveraneus Coles? William Floyd? Sure, Neon Deion produced a bunch of scores on returns, but Devin Hester's got those covered all by himself.
Posted by: dj moonbat | November 09, 2014 at 02:44 PM
He's got to be grossly underestimating the number of TDs Vinny and Bernie had. Throw in Jim Kelly and those three alone may have as many as FSU.

This Date in Hurricanes History...November 9th, 1991 Brought to you by the UM Sports Hall of Fame...
The 2nd ranked Miami Hurricanes beat the West Virginia Mountaneers 27-3 before a Homecoming Game crowd of 60,250 in the Orange Bowl! The victory set up a #1 versus #2 matchup against the Florida State Seminoles in the November 16 game in Tallahassee.
UMSHoF member Gino Torretta completed 23 of 35 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown pass to UMSHoF member Lamar Thomas. Torretta, not known as a rushing quarterback, ran 8 times for 31 yards and a 1 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to seal the victory.
UMSHoF member kicker Carlos Huerta added 2 field goals, and Stephen McGuire scored on a 4 yard run.
The Miami defense, led by UMSHoF member Michael Barrow, who had 8 solo and 10 total tackles, held the Mountaneers to 232 total yards and had 2 interceptions, one by UMSHoF member Ryan McNeil.
UMSHoF member and head coach Dennis Erickson's Canes moved to 8-0 and prepared for the "Game of The Century" the following week at Doak Campbell Stadium!

The Work 11-9
by Peter Ariz Published on 11-09-2014
Recruiting Notes
**The Tim Irvin roller coaster ride continues, but things seem to be slowly turning back into Miami’s favor. The Canes have always valued Irvin as a prospect, but Paul Williams’ recent trip to watch him play really blew him away. UF has fallen off somewhat, which is a product of their disappointing season according to a source close to Irvin. Texas is the dark horse here because Irvin is a big fan of Charlie Strong, but it would take a lot to get him to leave South Florida right now. No timetable for his decision.
**Devonaire Clarington is no longer a priority at this point. The staff has monitored Clarington closely over the past three years and he has always been a prospect who showed more potential than production. Miami has decided to go in another direction due to a few issues, including the high possibility that it would have been a struggle getting him to qualify. I would not be surprised to see him wind up at Marshall.
**I mentioned about a month ago that Miami was quietly making a big push for Marcus Lewis and that the staff believed they were in the thick of things for him. Not much has changed, as I am told the Canes are a real option for Lewis. As of right now, Lewis has his Miami visit scheduled for the weekend before signing day and if that holds up, the staff will be going in for the close.
**Booker T. Washington’s Antonio Calloway remains a major priority for the Canes at receiver. Local options such as Richie Cooper are being looked at as well, but as of now the focus remains on Calloway. Davante Davis is also still a major target at CB, but a Booker T source tells me that these two are almost impossible to read at this point. It is tough to cite Miami’s very recent success at Booker T in this situation because both of these kids transferred over in the spring. FSU is the biggest competition.
**It is no secret that Carlton Davis is a big favorite of the staff and he is still being recruited hard. The wild card here is that I’m told Davis really wants to play college ball with his close friend Jeremiah Dinson, a cornerback from American High School committed to Kentucky. To this point, Miami has not shown much interest but that could be something that other schools use to lure Davis away from OSU.
**Miami took Dredrick Snelson over the summer knowing that his recruitment would be a journey, to say the least. They had not been recruiting him all that hard before he basically reached out to the staff to say he wanted to commit, and Miami liked him a lot so they accepted the commitment. The Canes absolutely love his talent level, but the staff was unhappy with the Snelson’s recent posts on social media. A source close to Snelson says the whole Twitter thing was a misunderstanding and he will stick for now. Miami knows this won’t be the last scare they have with him, though.
**I’m interested to see if Miami will budge on a Rodrick Archer offer late in the game. I think Archer could bring a nice versatility and explosiveness on the defensive side of the ball and it would not hurt to strengthenJordan Scarlett’s commitment.
**To follow up my Tweet on Friday, the Miami staff was unaware of any major imminent “Welcome To The U” when it comes to recruiting as a prominent reporter on Twitter had previously hinted at. Carry on.
Team Notes
**The status of Ereck Flowers is still up in the air for Saturday, but a source told me that he has been walking around on his own power and jogging since last week. It is still unlikely that he goes, but it would not be a complete shock to see him give it a try.
**Coaches are more than pleased with the progress of Demetrius Jackson. I’m told that Jackson has been the exemplary redshirt and taken the opportunity very seriously. Not only has he been adding great weight, but also his understanding of the game has improved leaps and bounds from the moment he stepped on campus. The word “monster” was used to describe his recent performances in practice.

I would love for the Canes to pick up Davis and Clarrington at Booker T. They both are playmakers and I saw Davis (a big corner) shut down Phillips and get a pick 6 against Central. They would be huge gets and I agree that it's between FSU and UM. I would hope the Ice connection and a good performance by the Canes on Saturday will tilt the scale in the Canes favor.

The ACC Coastal Picture:
In short, time is running out.
Out:
Virginia Tech. Nothing changed over the bye week, after they played themselves out of the Coastal race when UM beat them. Making a bowl game will be difficult. It still sounds weird.
Virginia. Though somewhat competitive against FSU, they are now absolutely out of the race. With Miami and Va. Tech up next, it's unlikely they'll make a bowl game.
Pittsburgh. They have three conference losses, but they've already lost to Duke, Ga. Tech, and UM is still on board. They stink, like the others above.
North Carolina. Like Va. Tech, their bye week did them no favors. They also have yet to play Duke.
Borderline:
Miami. Winning out is a must, but it may not be enough.
Contenders:
Ga. Tech. They have one remaining conference game vs. Clemson. It's win or officially go home.
Duke. The number one team in the Coastal has now won four straight conference games. All of their remaining opponents have losing records. Woof.
It's Duke's to lose. Va. Tech, N. Carolina, and Wake are bad teams.

Bolden and Walker, Coles.
Posted by: The Dude | November 09, 2014 at 05:47 PM
Oh, c'mon. Of those guys, only Boldin is on a par with Andre Johnson, Michael Irvin and Santana Moss, all of whom had 60+ career TDs. Reggie Wayne's got 80+.
Danny Kanell and Brad Johnson are nowhere NEAR Jim Kelly and Vinny Testaverde. (And I was stunned to learn just now that Vinny threw about 15% more touchdowns than Kelly.)
Warrick Dunn can't touch Edgerrin James or Frank Gore. Or Clinton Portis.
And then there's the tight ends, and a huge cast of merely good NFL players from MIami.
It's not that FSU hasn't produced any really good players. It's just that Miami is, well, you know -- Miami. There was a flood of talent over two and a half decades to the NFL that was just freaking crazy.

Canes QB has the highest passer rating and TD passes in the ACC. Duke leads the ACC and the nation in all purpose yards and yards per carry. Walford leads the ACC TEs in TD catches and nearly leads in receptions. Perryman is a top LB in the ACC. A win against FSU and there will be a lot of post season recognition for the Canes this year.
