The DT talent hasnt been there in South Florida for a while...last year we got Moten from STA... other than that the 9ut of state talent is staying home, but we did snag Courtel Jenkins..he's been a nice addition

Ohio_Cane

There are a lot of DT's out of state that haven't decided yet. Long way to signing day still. 2+ months.

I'm always leery about DT's because of our recent history with them, but we're gonna have to snag one like Courtel again OOS.

I can't speak for this yr but if our defensive players do well in the up coming draft you may see the of elite DT swing in our favor in 2016

UMike

Keith Bryant
Derrick Calloway
Jaynard Bostwick
Travonte Valentine
Demarcus Christmas
Khairi Clark
Elkino Watson
Nile Lawrence-Stample

All 4-5 Star DT's in South Florida since 2011... not a whole gang of them, but we have missed on our share. I do think Jenkins is a steal from OOS though.

CaneRock

Being that we run a 3-4, I don't think DT is a high priority for this staff. You only need 1 NT for a 3-4, and the other 2 DLmen are more DE/DT hybrids.

UMike

Do you think kids like or dislike the idea of being a hybrid? Some may think it will help get to the league, others may think it hurts them.

CaneRock

UMike...good question. I think the 3-4 matches up pretty good to the spread. But against NU, a GOOD double TE team, a GOOD double TE team is kryptonite to a 3-4. That's why I've said we need a change-up when we play teams like that...we would've been better off lining up in some sort of 4-4/6-2 alignment against NU.

trianglecane

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 21, 2014 at 10:50 AM

Maybe that is why cronk was at the fsu game?

CaneRock

But UMike, that list you put up can't be ignored. Those kids can play in a 3-4, but it's no coincidence, the teams they play for play 1 gap penetrating schemes. And I'll leave it at that LMAO!

SinisterCane

Either way for Al's system the CANEZ needs a bunch of incoming LB's and Dlineman

I agree with this list, but would say that Walford is definitely deserving of AA. He is the best TE in college. I guess the coaches are developing players. I would say that Bush would have been All ACC until his latest injury setback. He is doubtful for this weekend, but he is the second leading tackler for the Canes and leads the ACC with 5 forced fumbles from the Safety positon.

That was then this is Now

Might as well stay in a 3-4 because we can't recruit DT's, oh we did get a couple last year but look at all we have missed out on and only have 1 verballed for this year and not highly rated at that. I also noticed where the state of Florida has 10 4 star or better WR's in the top 50 and naturally we don't have one of them, yet! Also 9 5 star players and unless we flip one we will go zilch on those boys. This is what grips my azz, out of 9 we can't get ONE! To change our mediocre ways we have to do a better job in state. Ain't no cloud and Flo. sux, so except for FSU and Clemson eating our profits we have no excuses.

Are you talking about King James? You a hater!

WWIN

DT is the most important position in the 3-4! If you don't have a good DT you might wanna run a different scheme

Ohio_Cane

Steve Feinberg ‏@canesthing 5m5 minutes ago

Rashard Robinson.. kicked off LSU.? ..wanted him at Miami...

CaneRock

WWIM...believe it or not, the DTs in this defense, or any other vanilla 3-4, are really the ILBs...in our case, Perryman & Kirby.

CaneRock

If you look at the evolution of most defenses, you'll see that the 4-3 as one example, is an offspring of the 5-2...they backed up the NT, made em' a MLB, and voila, you have a 4-3. And from what I've read, the 3-4, is an offspring of the 6-2.

CoCane

Off topic but...

Who's excited about Star Wars episode 7 coming out December 2015? I am!

SinisterCane

If we stay aggressive within their Defensive scheme, it will attract 5* Dlinemen, if they go conservative expect more of the same with striking out on top tier defensive recruits

CaneRock

From SS:

The Hurricanes basketball team got more bad news on Wednesday.

Already without Davon Reed for a portion of the season after the guard had surgery earlier this month, now Miami will be without forward Ivan Cruz Uceda because of an NCAA eligibility rule that requires students to enroll in college one year after high school graduation.

Miami announced that Cruz Uceda will miss the first half of the season--16 games--but will be able to practice with the Hurricanes. He's expected to return to the lineup in time for Miami's game against Notre Dame on Jan. 17th.

"We feel very bad for Ivan,” said Miami coach Jim Larrañaga in a statement released by the school. “Sitting out half of the season is very tough on him and us. Ivan is working very hard to prepare himself for when he does become eligible. He is an excellent rebounder and skilled big man. It is unfortunate that he is being impacted in such a way. We will miss him greatly during the first half of the year."

Cruz Uceda averaged 14.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in his second season at Harcum College. A native of Madrid, he attended Giner de los Rios high school in Spain.

CaneRock

I wanna say I saw Uceda play against Howard?...He reminded me of a poor man's Gasol.

After thumping Florida on the road and crushing a good Akron team? If we beat South Carolina in what is essentially a road game, I'd be stunned if we aren't ranked. I know early season polls mean nothing, but what is the point of having one if you're not recognizing the teams getting it done on the court?

Up & at 'em Canespace - it's game day!

Been way too busy this week but I want to give a shout to the gang at the FSU game.

Umike, thanks for the kind words in the last blog. It was totally my pleasure to be able to hang with you and your brother. I had a great time. Keep up the good work helping to mentor and provide our youth with the guidance they need.

Epi, it was good to meet you. Now that you have my phone # and know where we park, give me a call if you are going to the Pitt game.

Go Canes, glad to see you again. even tho we only had short time to talk before the game. I have a plan to help you with your quest to meet TS. Same as Epi, let me know about Pitt.

Terrance, my plan is to not eat so damn much before the Pitt game so I can help you with all those wings you be cookin' up.

We actually tried to get a picture of us all at half time but it turned out to be like herding cats. Terrance and I were the cats because Umike, Epi & Go all managed to make it to one spot & meet up.

Zilla, Ohio & Umike - I'm going to have to go back & watch that play again this weekend. But I was watching thru the binoculars and clearly saw the hold and the ref throw the flag right at the infraction. I was positive he said there was no flag for holding.

The Cavaliers have won three of the past four meetings and there have been six upsets in the past 10 years in the series. The Hurricanes just gave an "A-plus" performance against Florida State last week as they led 23-7 in the first half but fell short. On the other side, Virginia is fresh off a bye. Earlier this year at home the Cavaliers nearly upset a top-10 UCLA team (Bruins had three defensive touchdowns) and did upset top-25 Louisville. Last year when these two played, Virginia had a 28-11 first-down edge on the road, and this year's Cavaliers squad is much better. Not only do I back the Cavs "plus the points" but I will call for the outright upset here.

ATS pick: Virginia
Score: Virginia 24, Miami 23

I couldn't agree MORE. DO ANYTHING YOU WANT with the rest of the uniform... but "#Don't F_k wid the helmet"

We practice EVERYDAY with white helmets and then the QB has to make a quick decision on a crucial throw on gameday and there's NO WHITE HELMET ON THE FIELD? C'Mon man.

Haven't ALL but one of our losses involved NON-WHITE HELMETS this year?
