Go Canes

Cincy was 41-13 going into the 4th. They scored when we emptied the bench on both sides of the ball.

UVA scored two TDs after a blocked punt and roughing the kicker set them up at the 3.

Louisville scored 24 despite our D being on the field the entire game. They had a KR for a TD.

SJMPARMAN

You have to have a lot of possessions to score 40 points on offense. When a team is dominating your defense with its running game, and controlling the clock there just aren't enough possessions to get 40. But this is nothing new. It has been going on ever since day 1 of Golden's tenure and it will likely continue until a change is made at the top. I wanted Al to be the guy to turn it around but I just don't think he is capable of doing it.

dj moonbat

Don't know why you ask something you know the answer to CR, you understand football.

So, CaneRock, the temptation when Go does something like this is to try to set him straight. I've decided that never, ever works. You're only going to make yourself crazy -- which is probably his goal.

Go Canes

Yes the game has changed. That is my point. Which is why scoring 3 or 0 in the second half of nearly every big game and leaving your defense on the field the entire time is a bigger part of why we lost so many games late..

If we had austained drives that resulted in points in any of those games, the outcome likely would have been much different.

With the JUCO mid-year signing period starting today, #Canes should officially add TE Jerome Washington and OL Jahair Jones shortly.

Strictly speaking, you only need six possessions. Five if you always go for two on the PAT. Obviously, no team does that, but the math tells us it's possible if the offense is good enough and/or the defense is bad enough.

Actually, it points the way to a potentially great metric for the potency of an offense: how many possessions does this team require to score 100 points? The lower the number, the better the offense.

1mg of Epi

We'd have one more win with 30. But point taken, o wasn't good enough.. Nor was the D. Or ST.

Blow it up.

30CINCO

I'm a Nike fan so I really hope we stick with them. Not sure how I would feel buying Addidas or UA Canes gear.

How many high powered scoring attacks does Miami face each season?

SOUP

That's 0-3, with 2 up in the air right there, so where's this "likely undefeated"?

Posted by: CaneRock | December 17, 2014 at 08:55 AM

Like I said 40 points a game or BUST!

CaneRock

Well going forward, we can't have this mentality that we have to protect the defense all the time. Only 2 teams in the CFB playoffs are in the top 50 for TOP...Alabama at #19, & OSU at #38. Hell, even we're ahead of FSU in TOP at #83, and they're #98, albeit only 1 minute seperates our TOP. At the end of the day, damn the defense, and SCORE!

1mg of Epi

None. We didn't lose to any offensive juggernauts.

Posted by: CaneRock | December 17, 2014 at 09:28 AM

This. The problem with the offense isn't that it's not on the field enough. It's that it's not in the end zone enough.

Go Canes

It's not only about TOP. Its about momentum, controlling clock to an extent, not having your D out there an entire second half with ZERO margin for error because your offense can't score a single TD in an entire half. It's about balance and when necessary doing what it takes to win.

That's where our coaches have failed, not installing a great players make great plays in if moments mentally.

If only the fans showed up we might have scored more.

I think the old rule of thumb was that IF:

U held your opponent to 24 points or less or scored 35 or more in any given game you would win 85% of the time?

The older rule of thumb: if you held your opponent to 24 points or less and scored 35 or more in any given game you would win 100% of the time.

SOUP

GOCanes...yes that is true, we lack ever developing ANY kind of momentum in games because we simply cannot make BIG plays when we need to on offense or defense. I am a HUGE believer in emotion and momentum in football while others just say we should "execute".

The other team never feels threatened or over-whelmed or desparate or out of synch or control. They just methodically go about their game plane to beat us, have success and gain confidence and momentum, and then they beat us because we simplay cannot make plays when it counts.

SJMPARMAN

dj - Yes, but they don't keep that stat. They do keep another very telling stat that is very illustrative of getting dominated by another team's offense. It is the number of offensive plays you get in a game/season. Let's compare Miami with the rest of the Coastal and FSU.

Miami - 764 plays.
FSU - 880 plays.
Duke - 886 plays.
GT - 920 plays.
UNC - 919 plays.
Pitt - 841 plays.
UVA - 883 plays.
VT - 894 plays.

There is just little margin of error to get to 40 points a game when you run so few plays per game.

dj moonbat

And we were top 14 in total defense!?!?!

Impressive!

It was just too good a straight line for me NOT to add that punchline. Obviously, I'm not nearly as negative about the defense as I was last year. Now I'm negative about the whole team.

SOUP

The older rule of thumb: if you held your opponent to 24 points or less and scored 35 or more in any given game you would win 100% of the time.

The D isn't designed to make plays. They're executing it as they're supposed to.

------------------------------------

JUCO early signing period is today.

dj moonbat

Again, you guys can keep tinkering with your slide rules, and coming up with ways we coulda shoulda won all them games:

- If we only had scored 35! (Why not shoot for an even 100?)
- If we only had held opponents under 24! (C'mon! If we're fantasizing, let's shoot for zero!)
- If we only converted 40% of our 'money downs'!

Etc.

All of these are just numbers telling us that for about the tenth straight year, the 'Canes aren't playing good enough football.

We keep playing substandard football because the coaches and players aren't as good as they used to be. In America, if you want to attract higher quality people, you need to pay them a competitive salary. Except you can't pay college football players, so if you're looking to get better, there's just one place to spend.

See where I'm going with this?

Good point but how many plays did GT run against us?

GT ran 72 plays against us.
65 rushes for 318 yards.

We ran 44 plays.
We ran 19 rushes for 107 yards.

GT possessed the ball for 40:45.
We possessed the ball for 19:15.

Not a winning formula.

Yeah, but it doesn't help when your QB has to look to the sidelines before damn near every play. How many plays are we leaving on the field because of that...

you guys need to stop researching all these "what if" stats. At the end of the day, we are 6 - 6... PERIOD. That is the only stat that counts in my eyes....
