Time is of the essence in year five. It is all about talent and depth at this stage of the game of Al Golden's tenure at UM if he is to be successful.
Who do you think Miami will get?
Who will they possibly miss on?
Who is your can't miss target?

There are a whole lot of variables that might come into play over the next thirteen months. If we have another season like this one, might lose the whole class. If we lose the coach, might lose the whole class -- or might gain some ballers if we pick the right replacement. How well will McElwain recruit South Florida? Is the Winston Era over at FSU, and if so, will the team look as good to potential recruits as it has recently? Where will all these players' friends end up? Who will fail to make good enough grades?
In short, we don't know, and neither do the people who claim they do.

Bosa is a for sure emphatic NO. Legacy kid for OSU. Add in Joey's success and there's a no brainer.
When kids are asleep I'll give my assessment of each from what I know right now.

If he stays with the same scheming on defense, it won't matter how much depth and talent we have.

Nonsense. It seemed like every play last year, I was shouting at the TV "Why has God saddled Al Golden with such scrawny, lead-footed idiots to implement his ingenious schemes?! Why, God, why?!"
Posted by: dj moonbat | December 23, 2014 at 07:40 PM
Did we recruit Rakeem Kato & Tommy Shuler?...or did they "not have the grades"?
Posted by: CaneRock | December 23, 2014 at 07:44 PM
Ya'll see that Marshall defense, they spill everything to the sidelines, and clean it up with their speed...#SPILL-N-KILL!

I heard Bosa say He wanted to play on the West Coast...USC?
Posted by: CaneRock | December 23, 2014 at 08:04 PM
Don't see legacies like Bush or Bosa even giving us a look.
Lot's of good ones on that list. Need to finish strong and have a good 2015 to have a shot at most of these kids.
Even if we are changing coaches, the promise of playing with Kaaya, if he becomes what we hope and think he will, can still get us a lot of those offensive guys.

The only team there I can imagine rooting for is Oregon. Hate Bama and OSU. Respect FSU but can't root for them.

I think Butch Davis will do an amazing job recruiting these kids. I wouldn't count any of them out when Butch is selling them on coming to 'The U'!

I want some to beat FSU badly as I want Winston's last game to be his only loss and the Noles not to come anywhere near the 2000-2002 Canes winning streak! Go anyone but Florida State!

All of these should be taken with a grain of salt, seeing as it's 14 months until they sign. Too many things can change in recruiting from week to week, let alone that long. Our season, other team's seasons, coaching changes, $$$, etc.
Shavar Manuel - We have a shot. FSU is biggest competition and his uncle is an FSU fan and is his handler. Tough pull.
Nate Craig - no shot. We already have 2 of the top 10 WR's in that class, and he seems all SEC.
Trayvon Mullen - please lord! We have a shot. He's liked us since the FSU game. Elite speed, elite sized corner. I will pray to every god that he comes to UM. He's the type of kid you build a defense around, a la Sherman/Revis.
Nike Bosa - No.
Saivion Smith - We're building a pipeline with IMG, it seems. Love that. He would love to play for UM, but dad is big UF fan. Will be tough.
Snelson- Decommitted. Looks like he wants to play with Torrance Gibson. OSU's to lose, IMO.
Sam Bruce - We're good for now. He likes Oregon and FSU, though. As long as Beard stays and Scarlett sticks, he's ours. Also, Kaaya needs to keep playing at a high level.
Dionte Mullins - Only way we lose him is if Golden gets fired, IMO. His mom is extremely in love with Al and has said publicly the only way her son isn't a Cane is if Golden is gone. If he's fired or leaves, they'll reevaluate.
Eli Stove - I know nothing about him. Will look into it though.
Shaq Quarterman - As solid as it gets. If Golden goes, they'll meet with the new coach and see if they still feel UM is the best place. He is committed to the school, though, not the coach. His dad posts on CIS and is really cool.
Cactus Jack Allison - The heir to Kaaya's throne. No worries unless Coley isn't here. Elite qb.
Gotta wrap presents now. Will do the rest later or tmr

^^^^^^^^ Good job Ohio!
Mullens' mom is hilarious! No way in hell one can be a huge UM fan but will leave if Golden leaves??!! LMAO

The Dude has not officially signed with any teams fanbase. Although Oregon is definitely in the running, rumors of my commitment are unfounded.
Posted by: The Dude | December 23, 2014 at 11:10 PM
WWIM, some parents are very protective with their kids and trust coaches with their child's well-being. Mrs Mullins is one of those. Kaaya's mom another example with Coley. She was on board because she trusted him with Brad's life, basically. Moms call the shots sometimes.

Spurrier on low tix sales: "We were 11-2 last year, I don't know if you've heard. Now we're 6-6. They used to play for NCs. They're 6-6."
Posted by: WWIN | December 24, 2014 at 12:02 AM
Ohio, she's bluffin!!!!!!!
I understand what you're saying tho and that's true, there are parents like that and Kaaya's mom is one, but Mullens' mom I don't believe.

Judge to Winston
In what manner, verbally or physically, did the woman give her consent to sex?
Winston said his accuser provided consent not with words but by "moaning."
God help the next injured player who moans near Winston.

Not many people in sports will give the press better quotes than the Old Ball Coach. It would make a funny column writing up what Steve Spurrier would have said after Miami's losses, instead of the relentless banality of Goldenspeak.

D'Onofrio the recruiter
According to 247sports D'Onofrio has only been responsible for one recruit in the 2015 cycle (Jamie Gordinier.) That is as either primary or secondary recruiter. ONE SINGLE consensus 3-star recruit in a whole year. And to get him D had to offer over a year in advance sandwiched between offers from Temple and Old Dominion. That is unfathomable to me. How is it possible that our D coordinator DOES NOT RECRUIT?

Davis' explanation for what was behind his departure from UM: "Ten days before we played BC [Boston College] in the last game of the season, we had completed 97 percent of the contract. It had taken us three hours to agree to the money. That was done. I was probably one of the lowest-paid [I-A] head coaches when I took that job [in 1995] and then after seven years, they were paying me $1 million.
The stumbling block we could never get over was, if they decided to do what North Carolina did [by just suddenly firing him] they were only going to pay me 20 percent of the money, but because [Miami] had been burned by Howard [Schnellenberger] leaving and Jimmy leaving and Dennis [Erickson] leaving, so if I had ever left I had to pay them 80 percent.
"I said, 'Guys that isn't fair. I can't pay you 80 and you're only gonna pay me 20. If you wake up and say, 'I don't like redhead coaches,' I'm gone. Let's either make it 80-80, 20-20 or 50-50.' We battled over 20-80 for almost two months. I turned the Cleveland Browns job down. I turned down two other jobs.
Well, lo and behold, the last home visit I made I'm sitting in Antrel Rolle's living room and his mom and dad said, 'Coach, are you gonna be here?' I said, 'Antrel, I will be the head coach at the University of Miami,' and I believed in all my heart I was going to be. Then we go home and four or five days later we still can't get the contract done. [Cleveland president] Carmen Policy calls and says, 'Would you reconsider?'
"I talked it over with my wife. You live a little bit in fear. I thought, 'Well, today they love me, but in 1997 they were flying a plane over the stadium, 'Get Rid of Butch Davis!' It didn't take long to keep reminding yourself that this 80-20 stuff wasn't fair.
We made one more stab and called [Miami AD] Paul Dee and he went to the trustees and asked them to make it fair. Finally, we made the change. I wished I hadn't have, but we did.

Let's see how the class finishes out. We got three highly ranked players to sign with us on January 7th (2012), so the class's current ranking could fluctuate up...or down.
http://canespace.typepad.com/canespace/2012/01/the-mother-load.html
And to be impartial in this...recruiting is a two year process at this point. The 2015 class was the last class affected at any point by the Shapiro scandal. The 2016 class was not, which is probably why it is stronger.

Fair? This is a blog.
I think Butch's explanation is self-serving, but when you get right down to it, at the very WORST, Butch's behavior could be described as shaking his employer down to get paid on terms reflecting something near his actual value.
It's not like he was trying to get a multi-year extension after having six wins in his first season, with a generous buyout that would prevent him from getting fired for years to come. That would be totally wrong.
