Which hurts recruiting more now, losing the bowl game and keeping Golden or firing Golden?

Posted by: WWIM | December 28, 2014 at 11:11 PM

There was a saying that goes you shouldn't remove hope from people because sometimes that's all they have. Well keeping Golden removes hope and thus keeping him hurts more.

In the eyes of a recruit an unknown can be better. The known sucks. So with the firing you make it better by providing possibility. But in keeping Golden you remove hope which is all we have right now.

Soup-this pain is real and to some devastating.U being an alum I understand U being somewhat lost.Me too.I said a couple of blogs ago that I felt like I had lost a part of myself. Its true-but I have to continue believing it will get better.U know-expect the worse, hope for the best.Except the facts, hope for change but do all U can do to continue. We are committed to the "U" for life, some as alums, some because we were brought up as Canes, some just became Cane fans because they just loved their swagger and they won.We all came from different paths and directions but we're all Canes. So I guess what I'm saying is;U have an unbelievable platform called CANESPACE.In other words, use this platform as a pulpit.Continue to scream what we all want to believe and possibly change.Continue writing and allow others to write theirs.Canespace is a megaphone to be heard not ignored. This place could just be the fulcrum that turns things 180 degrees.Just trying to preach, glass 1/2 full, not totally empty.

So let me ask this question again???????

Which hurts recruiting more now, losing the bowl game and keeping Golden or firing Golden?

nemo2002

Blake James doesn't have the power to fire Al Golden.
He has to operate within an approved budget. And the annual budget doesn't contain any provision for a buy out of Coach Golden's contract.
A extraordinary decision of that nature - given the extraordinary expense - requires approval of President Shalala and probably also the BOT executive committee.
Who knows what Blake James REALLY thinks about Al Golden and the state of our football program? Who knows what, if anything, he has recommended to higher authority? At this point all he can say, publicly, is that "Al Golden is our coach."

VA Cane

Soup, I think a lot of folks felt that way. I had heard good things, and I heard not so good. Got good friend at PSU....even more at UVA. I did not think he had enough big time experience to handle the U, but took a wait and see attitude. We see results now!
P.S. tell BJ I am availabe!!!!!!

VA Cane

My niece with my help graduated from UM in 2012. Talked to her tonight, she was embarassed by the bowl performance. Since she was a little girl, she was with me on the sideline....don't let good looks hide football knowledge. She has a better understanding of the game than AlPa.
We have both agreed no more $ to UM athletics until AlPa is gone. I encourage all people to not send another dime until they get rid of AlPa, send them nothing, let them eat cake!

I am apathetic about writing a new article? What am I even supposed to say? Why would it matter? The only positive that came from yesterday's loss was that OGV posted a few comments just for old times sakes. Clearly he was right all along about Golden and I was wrong. I can admit it now, there is no more denying it is there?

And so, and this has taken me all day to make up my mind on it, but I hereby relinquish the Miami Hurricanes football team as my team. I will not read blogs, websites or newspaper articles about them until Al Golden is GONE. So thank you Blake James you have caused a fan of 36 years of watching nearly every game to finally say enough is enough. You won't make the tough decision so I will. I won't support this product as long as you don't care. I am DONE and OUT.

Great post. I'm not ready to turn my fan card in yet... But I don't think it's a conscious decision. You just slowly stop caring, which is what many of us feel. How many couldn't wait to see that game yesterday, and for how many of us was it an afterthought. Many are angry now. That anger will turn to apathy. And after apathy comes... Nothing. That's when our fan cards are turned in, and for too many that's not too far off.

One thing I can say for sure, I'm not spending another dime.

VA Cane

I laugh at the AlPa supporters because they make the same excuses as their Daddy AlPa....parrots!

These kids supposedly coming here are well aware of the turmoil and hoplessness here. They read the blogs, see the level of play, hear the old players and fans disgust.......they have seen the play at visits and on tv. They are realizing the only greatness at the U shows in The U I and II.....its all in the past, died 10 years ago and will not be back under this poser. While I want them to come here, I understand fleeing as far a possible to play real football at great programs with maximum exposure and a path to the NFL. They will not get that here. I would much rather play for Saban, Urban or Dumbo....they win, AlPa loses badly. You know recruiters are telling kids about the downhill skid the kamikaze dive we are in. Why would they come here? The fallout has begun.

I have no doubt I could coach these guys up.....could win.
Fire AlPa Golden now!

We suck. And will continue to suck. Face it, we suck. I have accepted that I am a fan of a joke of a football team. I won't ever expect to win anything meaningful again. Accept it. Tone down your expectations. Approach football like we used to basketball. Be shocked when we pull off a big win, but don't expect anything. As an alum, my loyalty will always be with The U. I've just lost the sense of pride on Saturdays.

From another site:

Hello again Mr. James.

I am sure that you are well aware that the tide of public opinion from the media and fan base have now included you in the overall negative feelings that have engulfed this football program. You said recently that a record of 6-6 was unacceptable at the University of Miami. Well, after today's embarrassing loss, the record stands at 6-7...only the third losing season in the last quarter century. If 6-6 is unacceptable, then what is 6-7?

Despite the so called "cloud" of the NCAA investigation, Coach Golden has out recruited every team in the ACC except for FSU. It was also mentioned twice during the broadcast that Miami has more NFL graded talent available for the upcoming draft than any team except for FSU. We easily have more talent than any team in the Coastal division, and yet we end the season tied for last place. The issue here is not talent, it's coaching.

This year's team had a record setting QB, the greatest RB in UM history (a history that includes current and future NFL hall of fame inductees), the most prolific TE in UM history, a very good OL, a Butkus award finalist at linebacker...and all we have to show for it is a losing record, yet another year without an ACC division title, much less a conference title, and another loss in a minor bowl game. We were favored to win today, against a mediocre South Carolina team that gives up an average of 31 points per game. With all the offensive firepower we have, it was all we could do to score 10 points under their average.

Coach Golden said it himself when he was hired for this job; that we will measure success with championships. We can't even compete in our own weak division of the ACC, much less play for any sort of championship. He has failed as a coach, by his own measure of success. By his own words, and your own words, he has failed as a coach, and the results on the field are unacceptable.

So, answer this one simple question...why does he deserve even one more day as the coach of the University of Miami football team?

VA Cane

James gives a loser a vote of cofidence...he needs to hand him a pink slip.
Jeremy Foley is a weasel, liar, cheater and a pompous ass. If so, what does that make James? At least he had the guts to fire Muschamp, Blake James is gutless. He is not a good AD and has no respect for the program or interest for what is best for UM. AlPa has destroyed us...not the answer.
The best thing he can do is fire Golden now.

CIS: Al Golden must be fired

A summary of Al Golden’s disastrous fourth season at Miami

The Miami Hurricanes finished with a losing record for just the third time since 1980, closing the year with an embarrassing four-game losing streak that included Golden’s fourth consecutive loss to arch rival Florida State and subsequent double-digit defeats to substandard ACC Coastal opponents that had sub-.500 records before getting a crack at a Golden-coached team.

Contrary to the intelligence-insulting PR spin from woefully incompetent athletic director Blake James, the team is regressing rapidly despite having brought in three consecutive Top 15 recruiting classes and having several upperclassmen projected as Top 100 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft. James’ clearly disingenuous rhetoric about how he witnessed a lot of progress that didn’t show up in the win and loss column was yet another slap in the face to passionate fans, alums, and former players who are witnessing those in positions of power actively sink this once-dominant program further into irrelevance by retaining Golden for an unearned fifth year.

- Golden has lost 11 of his last 19 games, including nine losses by double digits and seven losses against unranked opponents.

- Golden’s record at Miami, 28-22, is identical to his predecessor Randy Shannon’s during his four-year tenure. Shannon, who went 2-2 against Florida State, was deservedly fired within hours after finishing 7-5 in 2010. Golden is still employed after a four-game losing streak dropped Miami to 6-7 in 2014.

- Golden’s record at Miami is worse than Will Muschamp’s at Florida, despite facing far easier opposition. Muschamp, who did have an 11-win season and Sugar Bowl appearance in 2012, was deservedly fired by an in-state rival that cares about winning.

- Golden’s career head-coaching record currently stands at 55-56.

- Golden’s defense allowed 32.5 points per game in six regular season losses.

- Golden’s defense ranked 105th in fourth quarter points allowed per game.

- Golden has been outscored 188-84 in the second halves of Miami’s last 11 losses.

- Golden is 3-26 against teams that finish with fewer than five losses in a season. Two of those wins came this season in home games against teams that were overmatched talent-wise (Duke and Cincinnati).

Using “The Cloud” as a crutch to excuse Golden’s ineptitude is thoroughly pathetic and unacceptable

The USC Trojans had just 65 scholarship players available as a result of NCAA sanctions during Steve Sarkisian’s first year as their head coach. And yet they were a horribly defensed Hail Mary against Arizona State away from winning the very strong Pac-12 South this season.

Unlike Miami’s slow-paced offense that shortens the game to mask deficiencies on both sides of the ball, USC’s fast break, up-tempo style showcases their elite talent at the skill positions and appeals to one of the strongest recruiting bases in the country. Coming off a nine-win season and preparing to close out their first full recruiting class since 2011, the Trojans are overcoming adversity admirably and appear primed to reestablish themselves as a national title contender in the not-so-distant future.

While Miami’s head coach and administrators have constantly rattled off tired cloud-related excuses in a desperate attempt to mask their ineptitude, USC made a point not to bring up sanctions or feel sorry for themselves publicly as they dealt with far more severe circumstances. USC’s punishment from the NCAA included 10 scholarship losses per season over a three-year span, with a roster cap of 75. Miami’s slap on the wrist resulted in losing just nine total scholarships over three years, with a roster cap of 82.

As for the Canes, they have recruited more effectively than every other team in the ACC aside from Florida State over the last three years. However, it’s worth repeating that they tied for last in the Coastal and have frequently been defeated soundly by teams with nowhere near as much talent on their roster ever since Golden arrived. Golden is not a great recruiter by any means, but his teams routinely underachieve at a staggering rate relative to our talent level.

Our sanctions were announced over 14 months ago and the cloud is long gone. Other programs dealing with more serious sanctions are progressing nicely and continuing to move forward while ours continues to use “the cloud” as a crutch for Golden’s ineptitude.

Incompetence, apathy, intentional self-sabotage, or all of the above?

James felt the need to offer his unwavering pronouncement of support for Golden immediately following the embarrassing 31-13 loss at Louisville in the season opener.

"We are going to be a better team at the end of this year than we were at the start of this year,” James said. “We're going to be a better team at the end of this year than we were last year, and we're going to continue to get better each year."

The Hurricanes went from 9-4 in 2013 to 6-7 in 2014. A team with a True Freshman All-American at quarterback, one of the top running backs in school history accumulating 2,073 yards from scrimmage, one of the most explosive deep threats in the country, a projected first- or second-round left tackle, a Mackey Award finalist, and a Butkus Award finalist finished 6-7. A team with FAU and Arkansas State on its schedule that enjoys the benefit of playing in the weakest power-conference subdivision in the country ended up with a sub-.500 record in a head coach’s fourth year on the job.

And yet, despite all that, James said late last night following our loss to South Carolina in the Duck Commander Independence Bowl, “I think there was a lot of progress made this year, unfortunately it wasn't in the win and loss column.”

Any administration that even remotely cares about its football program would have fired Al Golden immediately following the season-ending loss to Pittsburgh, at the absolute latest. Even though James is a powerless Donna Shalala puppet who should be sent packing along with Golden, it’s appalling to see an athletic director contradict himself in such a conspicuous way with his pathetically feigned remarks about progress.

What must be done eventually should be done immediately

This administration appears unwilling to admit its mistake, preferring instead to kick the proverbial can down the road and delay the inevitable by waiting to fire Golden until after next season to save a few million dollars off his buyout in the short term. Their stubbornness, incompetence, and complacency will result in a wasted season under a lame duck coach, cause irreparable damage to recruiting for 2015 as well as 2016, and further the perception that they are blatantly sabotaging UM football and actively contributing to its demise with their indifference.

Not to mention that the short-term financial benefit of waiting an additional year to fire Golden will likely be offset by the imminent response from donors, season-ticket holders, and fans refusing to continue to pour money into a program that clearly isn’t committed to winning.

Not to sound hyperbolically overdramatic, but perhaps the most troubling aspect of this dire predicament for passionate supporters of Miami football is that we have yet to reach rock bottom if Golden is retained. We’re all going to find out what rock bottom feels like in roughly 12 months when the next recruiting class will likely be devoid of premier talent, half of Brad Kaaya’s college career will have been wasted under Golden, and the administration will be left with no choice but to do eventually what should have been done immediately.

Fire Al Golden now and save Miami football.

If you take out the 2 cream puff schools that we pay good money to beat up on, we only won 4 games. Or if you want to be optimistic, we only need to win 2 real games every year not to reach your minimum of 4 wins per year.

SJMPARMAN

Someone wrote on the blog that it sucks that we have to go through this in 2015 but we do.

For me, the life long ride as a Miami Hurricane fan ended earlier today when Blake James gave Al not only a vote of confidence but he also made it clear that the choice of assistants will be Al's decision alone.

After a coach posts a LOSING record, he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt period. I was calling for Al's head when he and DNo posted the worst defensive numbers in UM history in 2011 and 2012. To follow that up with a LOSING record in 2014 is pathetic. We don't play in the SEC. We play in the weak ACC and we can't even win the weakest Division in college football. If that wasn't bad enough, to end with a LOSING record is so completely and totally unacceptable. To have Blake James give Al a vote of confidence and to retain authority over which assistants stay or go just doesn't cut it.

I have been a Miami Hurricane fan all of my life. I remember when 3 wins a year was considered a success. I do not want to return to those days. It wasn't painful back then because we didn't know better back then. We just thought that was the best a small school like Miami could ever hope to achieve. Now, we know better. For 22 years, we were the gold standard of football programs.

We had ADs that pressured coaches to win, and we had coaches and players who would not ever look at losing a game as acceptable, and would never even entertain the thought that we would post a losing record for a year.

Now I don't care whether this decision is Shalala's or James. I don't have to go along for this ride with them. This year has been painful for me as a fan. I know 100% that we have talented players capable of being stars in the NFL. What we don't have is a competent HC, DC, OC or special teams coach. That is so plainly clear to ANYONE who watches this team play. If we want a thespian then hire Al as the drama coach. But the man has no place on any NCAA football field and certainly not another minute as UM coach. To give him a vote of confidence, to say we are improving after losing the last 4 games in a row to 1 good team and three stiffs is not progress.

So, I've been trying to find something remotely positive to say for two days. And there's none. The ultimate underachiever and his cronies return next year, and we lose 6-8 NFL players. The Miami Athletic Dept. has officially been classified as stupid by yours truly, as there is zero excuse for this "loyalty" to a failed coach.
Sidenote- remember when everyone wanted James to get the AD job because "he really loves UM?" Yeah, so do you and I, but that hardly makes me or you qualified for the job. Stupid hire produces predictably poor results.
So, is there any hope in Coral Gables? I see none. 5 South Florida commitments thus far should raise the "are you shi**ing me" question from the inept Athletic Director, but of course he is too busy counting the ACC bowl $$$ to really care. Golden is too stubborn and stupid to realize his style doesn't work at any school other than a glorified 1AA school, so nothing changes for next year,

In practice you're with ur position coach 70% of the time. Then meetings. You can't point to one DB who you saw develop this season or past years. And we have athletes at DB. Under good not even great:

A. Burns would be thought to be more agree dive b/c of his make up speed. He'd be thought that b/c of his speed he can peek back at the QB. He has great hips and elite speed, all characteristics of good DB.

T. Howard would play off man to cover his speed, but press in the zone. He is best in press zone, and press man, not off man. You develop his feet to turn and run. Great slot corner.

C. Elder, see A. Burns.

L. Gunter great slot coverage. Should have moved to Safety instead of Fentress a LB.

A Crawford, pure cover corner. Need to develop his press coverage.

D. Bush needs to play closer to the line b/c he has good range. Needs to develop his coverage man skills.

Fentress.... Sorry he is a slow LB. He's leaving so no need to write up.

J. Carter needs to play closer to the line. He has really good range but not a developed cover guy. Needs to develop coverage skills.

Bonus: Kayaa needs to spend some time with Amy Deem. He doesn't need to become a runner, but dayum he needs to be at least a threat.

2. Last week the Dolphins announce Joe Philbin will return as coach next season. Then they get blown out by the sorry azz Jets...

1. Not gonna happen and don't want it to happen.

2. I know right? The Fish have sucked for so long now that the Canes still have some catching up to do.

RE-READ THIS SLOWLY AND TELL ME WHAT U DON'T UNDERSTAND?

1. I don't think anyone looks at our program and says 6-7 is going to be acceptable for our program. And that's not Al. He came here wanting to win the ACC and that's where we need to go. I'm confident he'll continue to make the changes that are needed to get us to that point."

2. "I understand the frustration of the fan base," he said. "The thing I would say to everyone is no one is more frustrated than everyone here. It's frustrating when you don't have the type of success you want as a program.

3. "With that said everyone has different perspectives on what needs to be done. My job is to work with Al and figure out what is the best plan for us to get to where we meet all those expectations. The bar is set very high here."

4. "I don't want to put a time on it, `this date', but we have to continue to move forward. I think there was a lot of progress made this year, unfortunately it wasn't in the win and loss column. At the end of the day it's about wins and losses, and I understand that, and I understand why fans are frustrated."

Aerocane

Beer - last year I stated the same thing - fire golden and let's try Fisch as HC

Aerocane

Beer - philbon is bad! Any opportunity he has had to turn this thing around he has blown it!
With him and golden, miami football in 2015 will suck and suck badly

Aerocane

CoCane - 2015 is gonna be a really bad football year for the canes and fins! I hate it and it truly pisses me off that our U admin and Steven Ross just don't care and/or don't have a clue

BEERicane

Co, fins had nothing to play for. Jets were playing for their coach in his last game. I think philbin has done a reasonable job thus far. We are really missing key skill position pieces (WR and RB especially, hell, I will add QB) to be a real threat.

Yeah, who would you say was coasting more last night, me with that comment or Randy Johnson Jr. in the fourth quarter against one of the worst defenses in NCAA football this season, BEER?

My answer to your hypothetical is; I give the ball to Edge, who as a freshman was knocked for . . . fumbling problems. But I'm biased because I was a freshman in college in '98 and Otis was a little before my time. Willis, if his knee ligaments are guaranteed not to snap on the carry, is a pretty safe choice as 1A to anybody though.

Always enjoy reading Q, roach, RayChan, and UpNorth's comments during the season too, hope you guys have a nice end to '14 and a happy new year as well. Wish you guys had decent grist to work with here on the blog instead of the dead corpse of a program we're stuck with under the worst coach in modern UM history that has no chance of getting better until there's a coaching change.

SinisterCane

EFFF you Donna and all of your sh!tty football hires

Canezitis

They both need to be replaced

TonyCane

DC > OC.

BEERicane

Now Ravens are in

BEERicane

And AJ80 sent them there.

BEERicane

Just like that the Texans are in.

ACC Coastal: 1-3 so far in bowl games. The one win came vs a Cincy team miami pasted this yr so that win isn't really meaningful as it's probably the only bowl team that is worse than us.

If we get rid of some assistants who would u like to see (realistically) position and coordinators.
Posted by: sass | December 28, 2014 at 03:14 PM

Who cares. They'll still be running a defense that uses prevent on the goal line.

BEERicane

DC - anyone.

BEERicane

Wow. A lot can change but if all the scores hold, the Chiefs would get in the playoffs.

"At least we aren't Miami" said every struggling team in CFB.

BEERicane

I'd LOVE to be 9-3. That sounds amazing to me right now.

The Dude

"We need to continue to move forward." blake thinks 6-7 is in the forward direction.

The Dude

Hahaha, Blake James needs to shut his stupid f*cking mouth. It's bad enough Miami is burning but this guy is trying to tell everyone how good his fiddling sounds. Miami doesn't give two craps about winning, they just want to piss on their fanbase and tell them its rain.

sass

Thank you James #Renewed!

Laquinton... He IS at a program where 6-6 or 9-3 is ok.

J' Ville Cane

University of Miami Athletic Director Blake James reiterated to CaneSport Sunday afternoon that coach Al Golden's job is secure entering next season despite four consecutive season-ending losses.

But, at the same time, James didn't rule out a shakeup with the assistant coaches.

"Al and I talked after the game last night, we'll meet this week and I'll get a better understanding of where he sees everything at," James said. "We'll have an open conversation about where we're going and how we best get there."

Would James be okay if Golden said there are no coaching changes needed?

"Those are things I'll talk with Al about," James said. "He needs to decide what's best for us. It's something I'm not going to get into `we need to recruit a different kid, make coaching changes.' Al is the coach of the program, it's his responsibility to assess the program understanding the expectations. I don't think anyone looks at our program and says 6-7 is going to be acceptable for our program. And that's not Al. He came here wanting to win the ACC and that's where we need to go. I'm confident he'll continue to make the changes that are needed to get us to that point."

James says he reads all the emails and messages from fans upset with the current state of the program.

"I understand the frustration of the fan base," he said. "The thing I would say to everyone is no one is more frustrated than everyone here. It's frustrating when you don't have the type of success you want as a program. With that said everyone has different perspectives on what needs to be done. My job is to work with Al and figure out what is the best plan for us to get to where we meet all those expectations. The bar is set very high here."

James acknowledged "we're not achieving at the point" the football program needs. So how long before the program can be "back"?

"It's coming," James said. "You see it this year with the great impact we had with some of the freshmen, and having a great quarterback is huge. Having someone of Brad (Kaaya's) skill and to see him to continue to progress - I spoke with Brock Berlin (at the bowl game), got his thoughts which was very valuable to me.

"I don't want to put a time on it, `this date', but we have to continue to move forward. I think there was a lot of progress made this year, unfortunately it wasn't in the win and loss column. At the end of the day it's about wins and losses, and I understand that, and I understand why fans are frustrated."

what about all those former canes that actually accomplished some shat.

Nah. Golden might cut Coley, Brennan,Jethro and Paul or nobody. I don't think al has it in him. Last year he cited the cloud was gone and one more year in the system would benifit. And it did produce inflated numbers as this defense is greatly outmatched. Sucks that we have to go through this for another year. If only the powers that be would estinguish this man . He is clearly over his head needs to be back at a program like temple where 6-6 or 9-3 is okay.

J' Ville Cane

Take FAMU and Arky St. off this year's schedule and Miami goes 4-7.  This is simply unacceptable.  If anyone decides that they want to accept the status quo and sweep this under the rug, then they are not Hurricane football fans and they know diddily squat about college football.

Church!!

canesteeler

I became a Canes fan in 1980 and last night was the first time I decided to pass on watching the Canes play. I spent my day at beautiful FAU stadium watching high school football.

WWIN

Coaching changes only gives Golden more excuses and buys him more time. If he gets new assistant coaches will they only give them a year to get it together?

Some people just don't understand the jobs of position coaches. For example, where our DB's line up is on the DC not the DB coach. A lineman trying to cover a slot WR is on the DC not the DL coach.

No coaching changes should be made, unless he brings in a Special Teams coach, cuz special teams was the WORST unit! So it wouldn't be fair to fire any other coaches. Michael Badgley kicked the first two kickoffs thru the end zone then for some reason he replaced him with Vogel and it never reached the end zone again??? Why didn't we onside kick at the end of the game? Did he really believe that the defense was going to stop them? You coulda had two chances to get the ball back instead of one!

BEERicane

Too bad temple wouldn't take him back.

BEERicane

nemo, fluoxetine is only about $90/month without coverage. Get an Rx, shouldn't be much more than $10/month with insurance.
