FSU runs primarily a 3-4 for one.
Posted by: Go Canes | December 16, 2014 at 11:44 AM
No they don't.
FSU runs a 4-2-5 (Nickle), and a 4-1-6 (Dime). Likewise with Duke, although they run more 4-2-5...Jeremy Cash is their version of Jalen Ramsey.

DJ, either way, comparing our TFL vs FSU seems a bit pointless to me considering how much more talent they have in their front 7 than us (Denzel notwithstanding)

Well, if our defense is significantly higher ranked, and their front 7 is that much better, are we really going to go that next step and say that our secondary is markedly better than FSU's? I dunno about that one.
Posted by: dj moonbat | December 16, 2014 at 12:18 PM
With the exception of U know who, our DB's are just as good, if not better than FSU's this year, IMO.

Yeah, but look: if the front seven is massively better except for Perryman, and the secondary is "as good, if not better,' how on Earth does Miami end up with such better overall yardage numbers?
The point is, yeah, FSU has better athletes on the front seven. But they also are calling plays that USE those athletes more actively -- hence the higher TFL numbers, even though the yardage numbers are inferior.
Posted by: dj moonbat | December 16, 2014 at 12:29 PM
LMAO! So now TFL & sacks is just a function of talent? Aren't ya'll always goin' on & on about this is the best defense we've fielded in a long time, but yet, the 2010 defense had over twice as many as TFL (115), and 12 more sacks (37) than this one. Miami 4-3 > than this BS @$$, SOF@$$ PSU defense...ALLLLL DAY!
#TEAMMIAMI4-3!

I'm not responding to defend our coaching or play calling, just FYI. Only responding to the numbers posted.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | December 16, 2014 at 12:36 PM
There's nothing wrong with this scheme. You can argue it's too soft but most schools are running some variation of it.
Posted by: Go Canes | December 16, 2014 at 11:33 AM
"Some variation of it".... Exactly.

The base D really is a prevent. Al pretty much says it. I'd like to see evidence of the contrary.

Posted by: 1mg of Epi | December 16, 2014 at 12:41 PM
At a high enough level of abstraction, ALL colleges run some variation of the same defense: 11 guys of differing sizes, lined up in layers to stop different kinds of plays.

One thing I might say about your comment that their front 7 is more talented; I think they (FSU) are deeper but the starting front 7 are pretty close.
Perryman, Armbrister, Grace and McCord are a better LB group than they have. I really wished Miami would have played Courtel more with Pierre at DE and Chick or Kamalu at the other spot, rotating in Thomas.
Miami's front 7 is plenty talented. 1 big difference between the way Bama plays their 3-4 and the way Miami plays is in the secondary. While Bama certainly has some similarities in their front 7, they always have a war-daddy at NT and their DEs shed blocks. In the secondary, Bama uses tall and athletic corners and plays really close, they jam and misdirect the WRs A LOT. I've seen them mostly play 1 deep safety, but I'm not sure how often they do that. Miami plays WAY off the WRs, WAY too often. So even if Miami does bring pressure, the QB always has a easy quick throw. Then there are just the inexcusable things that people have been documenting on twitter all year,5 safeties and such.

Go watch this Denzel Perryman breakdown. Can get good slow-mo looks of our D, too.

Passing Defense
UM - 9th
FSU - 51st
Passing TD's Given Up
UM - 12
FSU - 20
Passer Rating Against

UM's secondary looks better to me.

Now compare their DL and LB's to ours.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | December 16, 2014 at 12:02 PM
Seriously dude it's coaching, our Dline has two 5* and the rest are 4*. How about I compare our TFL with Coastal Div. opponents. Will that get rid of that pointless taste out of you mouth, lol

Everybody runs different fronts, stunts, coverages and blitzes. Our coaching staff appears to run situationally deficient schemes.

U know if the late great Sean t was recruited and played under golden would he have been the player he was despite the prevent the win defense or would he have been just sitting on the bench for freestyling?

Regarding the stat comparison, what I'm try to show is everybody playing to win by taking more chances while we're play not to lose
Posted by: SinisterCane | December 16, 2014 at 01:23 PM
5* DT from CA interested in UM?
Not looking at wins, must be looking at the 10 players who are getting NFL grades and wants to be the first DT to get in on that, plus looking help improve a top 14 total defensive squad.

How much did Chad Thomas play this year? Significant minutes? I don't remember seeing him a ton.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | December 16, 2014 at 01:23 PM
did any of u guys watch booker t destroy norcross from ga I did and I remember thinking after that game how much of a stud chad was and how much of a scrub Lorenzo carter was and then chad goes to dominate summer camps and all star practices against the best in the country then he has ZERO sacks but guys like Lorenzo carter have multiple sacks and made a big impact. How is that possible? Do our defensive recruits forget to play defense ? What can explain that? It's almost like our defensive staff is like the raiders organization just destined to fail

Cool story Bro' CT played in 11 games

That list I saw earlier had one senior (Chik), one junior (McCord) and the rest were either freshmen, redshirts or suspended (AQM).
That's what's being compared to FSU's d-line?
I'm honestly just curious.

In the case of Chad, they get back spasms trying to throw around 300+LB OTs, instead of using their God given ability to run by em'...that's why.
