When was the last time anybody seen one of our DB's break on a slant or out route?

Posted by: WWIM | December 02, 2014 at 11:03 AM

I have been on the DB's all year. Neither or CB's or Safeties break in the ball. Again, I know injuries really hurt us at the Safety position, but we were terrible. I understand not getting beat deep, but none of the teams we played (exclulding except FSU) were going deep....They all were running the damn abll and short PA routes. With all the speed on the corners (Corn, Burns, and even Gunter) there was no getting beat deep. Say what you want but our DB play was HORRIBLE.....

The Dude

UpNorth, its been years and years. I can have it off my record here by taking class but its still $90 I have to pay.

Umike, Coke, You dudes are probably right, but I think I have a pretty good excuse for why I was speeding, (if I was) there were 2 other cops with their lights on flying by, just trying to get out of the way.

CoCane

UMike is right. The DOC (department of corrections) is set up to swindle the masses out of money in court with trumped up statutes, ordinances and codes. The cop will show up. Just pay and go on about your business...

From another site:

e Rose interview summary:

- Al Golden starts off sounding depressed. Very monotone

Rose: What you think overall of the year?

Golden: Well, I mean, c’mon, I feel like everyone else. Disappointed. We had an opportunity to win more games. No question about it. I’m disappointed with it. Obviously there’s silver linings in there. Guys improving, getting better, laying it on the line.

Rose: How do you explain last two games and the letdown after FSU? Blown out by Pitt UVA?

Golden: Hard to explain. Something obviously we’re really disappointed in. From FSU and previous 3 games, and the bye weeks included in that, we were playing and practicing at a high level. Clearly, we didn’t perform or execute at the same level the last two weeks as the previous 6. Not even gonna try to explain it. Gotta sit down with leadership, guys in different class, and fix it.

Rose: You think it’s more coaching, and not getting guys motivate? Is it scheme? Are guys checking out? What is the reason for the way it ended?

Golden: No excuse. Before you go down the list of things to blame it’s the job of the head coach to get the team to finish the year. I have to take responsibility. I have to learn from and grow from it to make sure it doesn’t happen again. If there’s a disappointing loss again like the FSU one, we have to make sure there aren’t the same results

Rose: Coach do you make staff changes this year?

Golden: It’s something I think about all the time. I’m always looking to improve the organization. I like to get back to work and get ready for the bowl game. Important to finish with a win. I evaluate everything at the conclusion of the season. A lot of areas of our team made improvements.

Rose: Coach, special teams. You’re in charge. Bad returns, bad coverage, what happened to your group?

Golden: I’m looking at every facet of it, Joe. Other day we didn’t cover the ball well on kick offs. Punt coverage was good all year. Kickoff coverage post FSU wasn’t as good. We had to change the whole alignment on kickoffs. Weren’t getting the ball in the endzone so we had to change what we were doing. Can’t get into it, but we were forced to change things, and it didn’t work. Gave Pitt a short field too often. Other aspect is we haven’t had long explosive return this year. We had multiple last year.

Rose: Lot of calls earlier today, guys fired up, one point made was certain receivers had big games, next games they disappeared. Is there a way to get more consistency from playmakers?

Golden: I mean, I think Joe, you know, from being a player we wanna be consistent there. Some games 7-8 guys touching ball that’s when we are at our best. Backs rotating in to stay fresh. But it’s a valid point. Some games we weren’t as good distributing the football. We wanna be consistent everywhere.

Rose: Halftime adjustments. Are you getting enough? Staff adjusting enough? Moving guys in the box etc?

Golden: Yeah, I think our guys do a great job. Again, as I’m checking in with both before the half you start to, when the other units going in just before half you say here’s what we gotta get done. I meet with offense/defense staff separately, then present to the team. Saturday we came out and scored, ensuing kickoff they start off in plus territory. One tiny example, but uh, we haven’t been as good in the 2nd half in the last 3 games, no question about it Joe.

Rose: Do you feels at any point guys just checked out. Ever sense that?

Golden: No I didn’t. I do think guys were, and there’s a difference between being genuinely crushed or disappointed after FSU because you gave it everything you have, maybe there was some regret, or 2nd thoughts oh man I wish I made this play, or had this one back, or I wish it didn’t get deflected. Sometimes you dwell on it. But I don’t think anyone said oh well, and checked out. When you watch the tape there’s too many guys fighting. And trying to finish. And do it the right way to suggest that

Rose: Coach reports that James Coley is going to Kentucky to join Mark Stoops any truth to this stuff?

Golden: Wow… that’s

Rose: And this is coming from reports online, you can check it out. I hope I’m not just hitting you with it now.

Golden: Well, ya you kind of are. That’s absolutely not true at all. No, you’re hitting me with it, no question about it. I think James is doing a really good job, and as I said to you before, to go into our schedule this year with a rookie QB, a true freshman QB, it took an enormous effort on the part of James. We asked brad to do a lot. Whatever the defense had we were getting. They saw a freshman QB over there and wanted him off his spot. Came after him. James did a really good job with Brad and gave an enormous effort to get him to the level to play

Rose: Coach, mark D’Onofrio, your relationship with him, you’ve been together forever, hard to evaluate a guy you’re close to?

Golden: (agitated) Look, someone’s got an agenda, so someone wants to talk about the relationship. I’ve known Mark for a really long time. There’s a relationship there and a trust in terms of the business side. If you look at the defense this year I feel like we’ve stabilized. I feel like we’ve had a lot of guys improve. Our total defense went from 90 to 15. We played a lot of young guys behind Denzel. We have young guys I’m excited about. We’ve made progress. I think we went up in number of categories. I’m excited about Darrion Owens, Chad Thomas, Anthony Moten, and the fact that we lost 3 starters and a coach right before the year started, and still had good results. We were able to redshirt a bunch of defensive guys, first time we got to redshirt kids like that. They’ll be ready to go. No I’m excited about my defense

Rose: What position do you need to upgrade in recruiting?

Golden: Offensive line. We had one transfer last January, then we had an inordinate amount of injuries.
Linder, Gadbois, etc. go down. So, there’s no question the depth there hurt us. We just didn’t have the number of bodies that we needed to. That’s a function of just having cuts. Scholarship cuts. When you’re low and you get injured it’s hard. In terms of taking scholarships that’s one of the places it hurt us at. We gotta forfeit that. I like Trevor, Danny, Nick, K.C., all coming back in Spring. Will make us better. We need a lot of depth there moving forward. We’re gonna sign a full class. Should indicate where we are numbers stand point. We gotta get back to even by 2016. We’ll still be short overall but we’ll feel better about our depth

Rose: Coach for me, Stacy Coley, after that first year I thought my God he’s gonna be special. Did something personal happen in his life? Why the drop off

Golden: Yeah well again its always difficult to talk about individual kids that are maybe not having the success they’ve had, for Stacy I’m glad he made some plays Saturday he needed that. I still believe in Stacy still think he’ll be a good football player. Part of it is that Phillip separated himself from the group. Clearly our most productive of the group, Stacy was the more explosive guy the year before. Maybe it’s a function of how we evolved offensively this year, but Stacy has a great attitude and is a great kid. Gotta work with him and improve his touches. Nothing but positive and great things to say about his direction in the future.

Rose: What’s the biggest evaluation. You’re responsible for 6-6 what’s the biggest thing to evaluate

Golden: I look at everything Joe. I look at personnel. Schemes. Everything that we do. In terms of, uh here’s another thing, I’m answering your question without thinking, ok if you’re not playing well on the road, what do we need to change? That’s a quality control thing. Maybe look at what other programs are doing in those areas. Or kickoff returns look at what other teams are doing there. Tweak some things. Some times its just little things to trigger it, not anything huge. Clearly, in terms of depth of the team, we have a lot of guys that have played and grown up during the season and 4th quarter there, that were young but nobody anticipated that going into the season, but that’s the way it shook out, but we gotta move forward with our young kids. Herndon, Kaaya, Brady, Grace, Brady, Thomas, Owens, we gotta keep getting em better and practice with a purpose

Rose: Coach anything left for duke to do after 3 years

Golden: Yeah I think my job in this deal is to support duke and anyone else that’s draft eligible. My job is to support them unconditionally. Not tell them what to do. Get em the answers and get em out of the way. I think that’s a very personal question. Its not for me to answer. Its between him and his mom. We wanna support him and be there for hi. He knows wed love him back but that’s not the issue. What does he want to do, what does he want to accomplish. I don’t want to get into personal – hes gotta list pros and cons. If he feels something tugging at his heart to come back, we support hat. If some facts or issues support him going the other way, we support that. I will support the underclassmen unconditionally

SinisterCane

Al has blamed the players, night games Coley, players again and players again. In 4 yrs. as HC has AL EVER Blamed NOFENSE for anything

UpNorthCane27

Dude,

when was the last time you got a speeding ticket?

here in Rhode island they forgive a speeding ticket if you have a clean record for 3 years.

CoCane

Your balls are in vice grips. Just pay up...

UMike

Better to just pay before the date if possible... the cop will be there lol

CaneRock

I don't have a problem with the 3-4, but the way we run it is just plain dumb. The thing with our defense, is once the other team effectively gets a hat on Denzel, we're done.

The Dude

Posted by: CoCane | December 02, 2014 at 11:07 AM

So thrown out if he doesn't show. What if he does? I'm not sure if I was speeding or not, he says I was and I guess it could be true, (I'm white afterall, so he's got no reason to make it up, lmao!) then am I in front of a judge looking like an ahole trying to not pay a ticket?

UpNorthCane27

The dude,

To add on to what my boy COKE said, that cop ain't missing the court date at all dem boys have to make that money for the city and department.

So if I plead not guilty to a ticket and the officer doesn't show up, I get out of having to pay it? What if he does show up, then what?

CoCane

The Dude,

If he shows up, you're f*cked. You gave up jurisdiction the moment you handed him your license. It's his word against yours. The "judge" always takes the cops word. Unless you have clear evidence you were not in the wrong. If you don't have that clear evidence and the cop shows up to court, just pay up and get it over with. If the cop doesn't show up to court, the case will be thrown out...

@KyleTucker_CJ: New Story || Miami's James Coley not candidate for Kentucky OC. Where is Mark Stoops in the hiring process? Latest: http://t.co/VDxSfieWsS

UpNorthCane27

heres what pisses me off!!!

A school like Wofford gave up 226 rushing yards to Gtech thats almost 100 yards less than what we did smdh...

now rushing yards don't mean shit if your not getting first downs, but they were getting first downs on the same exact run plays over and over

The Dude

Remember when he was hired? So underwhelming, I'm not surprised at all about our results. We got exactly what we knew we were getting, a guy that couldn't win the MAC, with the best players in the MAC.

dj moonbat

I told yall 4 years ago. Golden thinks he is a genius. He truly believes he has designed the holy grail of defensive schemes. That's why he blames the players when it doesn't work and that's why he won't adjust. Yall are thinking too hard. It's soooo simple...

Posted by: CoCane | December 02, 2014 at 10:52 AM

I think this is largely right. He and D'Onofrio have developed a defense that supposedly has reads for all the possible scenarios -- and who knows? Maybe it actually does.

What this means is D'Onofrio can call WHATEVER, since it all comes down to guys making the right reads anyway, whether the play succeeds or fails.

Now, if you're serious about WINNING, you would make sure your players were always making the right reads, or you would simplify the defense until they always made the right reads and you would handle some of the if/then complexities in the form of playcalling from the sideline.

The Dude

So if I plead not guilty to a ticket and the officer doesn't show up, I get out of having to pay it? What if he does show up, then what?

UMike

CoCane.. I have believed the same for at least a couple seasons now.

CoCane

UMike

Go Canes, I agree with most of your post, a lot of great points. However in regards to the GT game we didnt have to give up all those yards just because that is what GT does. We play them every year, we know what is coming. We got beat over and over by the same exact plays because we refused to adjust. Most stubborn staff in the country. I almost wonder if the staff doesnt make adjustments because if they do and they work, they can no longer blame the players.

Go Canes

I think a lot of anger is warranted but I think it's being aimed at the wrong parts of our team.

The problem with this program and it's coaching staff is their inability to do whatever it takes to win on a given Saturday.

Everyone keeps railing on the yardage give it up to GT etc...when in reality that's just what they do. If I had to guess Tech probably had more rushing yards against 80% of their opponents this year than they did against us, including the 400 they dropped on ninth-ranked Georgia this last weekend.

The problem is when truly great teams like Alabama and FSU give up 40 points they score 50. When they only scored 20 they give up 17.

In today's game great coaches find a way for their team to win any type of game, be it a shootout, defensive struggle or surviving an error plagued mess.

The Pitt and UVA games were a microcosm of that. We must have left 20 points on the field against Pitt. Perfect throws bouncing off a face-mask, ridiculous penalties at the worst moments, wide-open receivers being overthrown by 5 yards and a defense that never got off the field on third down. Against UVA we gifted them 11 points but couldn't overcome those errors and outscore them and win like a great team does.

Those kind of mental and physical mistakes reflect a team who's coaching staff is not preparing it's players to win by whatever means necessary every single week.

So yes the defense this year was much much better than last years. So was our offense for the most part. But neither was at its best when it counted the most.

All of that points to coaching, not scheme.

UpNorthCane27

Forget about Hugh freeze leaving to any other school, just signed a contract extension with Ole Miss.

And He has the nerve to say the OLine depth was part of the problem...but Pitt kicked yo' @$$ with 2 Sophs & a FM on their OLine.

what about not stopping the run at nebraska, gtech, and pitt?

In 4 years at Miami Golden has ONE... ONE win against a team that finished 8-4 or better, and that was this years Duke team. That is truly sad.

Posted by: UMike | December 02, 2014 at 08:59 AM

This is the stat I've been flogging all season -- and it wasn't at all a sure thing that Duke would finish 8-4 or better until fairly late in the season.

Four seasons, and one victory over a team of any quality whatsoever. And it's Duke.

I think it's safe to say that without the lengthy contract, the confident speaking about The Process, and of course The Tie, we would have had the 'going separate ways' press conference yesterday morning. (See? I didn't even mention that Al's w****!)

raizecane

UpNorth - what makes matters worse is that FSU has had 3 DC's in 3 years and still ballin

UMike

I keep asking myself how we manage to get worse as the year goes on, like last year, where we have an end of the year collapse, and then I remember other coaches are just smarter than ours and simply watched our game films.

UpNorthCane27

Im so tired of the success lil brother (Fswhoo) having all of the success because they know that football matters and you have to make good hires and spend that cake.

BigWindyCane1

Walford and Kaaya were snubs. I also think Bush was our second best defensive player before he was hurt and would have made a difference on key plays down the stretch. But snubs often happen, especially when you finish 6-6. An 8-4 or 9-3 record like last year and more Canes would be All ACC.

The sad part is that 9 of those 11 players on the all ACC teams and honorable mention are likely leaving for the NFL or graduation.

Canezitis

My 2cents: I think we need to move sooner rather than later if we're going to fir Al so the next HC can save this recruiting class. Fire Al this week and hire Cristobal. I know people feel like he turned on us, but he left to work under one of the best HC's for more money. I'd make that move too. He made FIU a decent team-FIU!, and he he has a year of Saban philosophy under his belt. I think he's the perfect candidate to keep our recruits in south Florida as well. Let him choose the defensive staff- they all have to go and I'm torn about keeping Coley on as an OC. He's still learning on the job, but develops QBs and we'd miss him in recruiting.
I'm just so tired of being tired of losing I'd even consider Kiffen, but then I what a big tool he is and I come back to reality. Let's just hope the BOT make the right call and soon.

I'm excited about the matchup later tonight vs. the Illini. Illinois is at #24/25, and should be a good test. Providence is still on the horizon, and these are the main tough games left pre conference play. The only loss between the two thus far is by Providence to #1 UKy. Providence has played some non-cupcake games, including destroying FSU and narrowly defeating Notre Dame.

I've never thought Brian London was disingenuous, so I don't doubt the call took place. The cynic in me would say its just an attempt to placate the fans. The optimist in me sees a small glimmer of hope.

And is it me, or are our DB's the worst and getting their head around? They NEVER seem to look back or make a play on the ball.

RIGHT!!!! I swear they never turn back, they rather Hold or get a PI instead of turning their heads and going for the pick.

Been griping about this all year. And I am not even an X's & O's guy.

I've always been leery of this guy, but TIFWIW...Brian London:

Monday night, as rumors were flying that Miami OC James Coley was considering the Kentucky OC gig, I was on my couch watching MNF and monitoring my Twitter feed. All of a sudden the phone rang. My caller ID told me that the person on the other end of the phone was someone I needed to speak to. Because they are not authorized to speak on the matter, I can’t reveal who the call was from. I can, however, tell you that this person is a member of the University of Miami’s leadership structure. I’ve known this person for a long time, and I know this person to be very passionate about the University in general and especially athletics.
So, when I get a chance to talk to this person, which isn’t as often as I’d like, I take it very seriously.

Here are some random notes from that conversation:

-Any decision about the head football coach at Miami will not be made by athletic director Blake James or President Donna E. Shalala. The decision will come straight from the Board of Trustees, with much of the say coming from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Stuart Miller. Miller, a UM Law School alum, and CEO of Lennar Corporation, is said to be very “authoritative and opinionated.” He’s also very passionate about UM Athletics. Miller’s father, Leonard, who passed away in 2002, was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1995-1999. The elder Miller was on the BOT from 1983 until the time he passed away. Oh, and the medical school is named after him. The Miller family holds considerable influence at The U to say the least.

-Several members of the BOT have voiced their frustration with the direction of the football program. Don’t think they are deaf to the situation or you, the fans’ frustration.

-Despite reports to the contrary, there is enough money in UM’s endowment to both buy out Golden and hire a new coach and staff with competitive compensation. The question is, WHETHER THE POWERS THAT BE want to spend the money. In the past the old guard has been, for a lack of a better word, cheap.

– Several members of the leadership group were put off by Al’s absence last December and his pursuit of the PSU gig. Many people that were once big supporters became disenfranchised.

– At the very least there will be a heavy push for several staff changes, especially on the defensive side of the football.

– The belief that leadership does not want to win in football is not true. Especially as it relates to more recent members of the BOT.

-From the conversation I gathered that even though Blake James has given Al the vote of confidence, if the powers-that-be above Blake want a change, there will be one.

– I was told a decision either way would be made maybe as early as this week, but at the most over the next few weeks. Right now the people that need to do the fact gathering etc were doing that.

Maybe we can start a GoFundMe account so JJ can take AlPa out to a small deserted island and brainwash him into using an attacking 4-3. I'm sure JJ knows where some are, if not I can show him a couple near the NW Channel off Key West.

Soup that's awesome can't wait.
