Interesting to see what will hapoen with AlPa, D'noPa and company....lot of rumors hard to differentiate between reality and fantasy. I would like to see a good solid change, but I do not think a firing and another quick impulse bad hire is the answer.
AlPa was not really a hot commodity with the big boys.....they knew Temple was not really a revival as they are not a big program. We were desperate....obviously. If it happens, it needs to be a strong hire....Butch would be great....but don't think it would happen. Needs to be someone dynamic...not necessarily a Cane but someone who knows what UM is about....winning dammit!

There's no way in hell they would fire a coach NOW and replace him with a developmental project. IF they were to do it, they'd be picking off a pretty short list.

Itsa_Canes_Thing

Like a lot pf people are saying right now, it is way to quiet at UM. The only person that has said anything is Blake. I do think that initially the thought was to retain Al, but as a number of people have mentioned the situation right now is was to toxic. The only thing that can be done now is cleaning house. Even if Al was retained and he fired a number of coaches I honestly don't think he knows enough people in the business to put together a solid staff, that is why is is constantly hiring from the HS level. UM needs to look around and really ask themselves how they can beat the Bama's, the OSU's and Oregon's let alone the other teams in the ACC for that matter. Pitt had a solid HC hire. UNC hires Chizick as DC. This is our yearly competition and as of yet we haven't done anything.

We lost out on some good recriuts but There are still some good recruits out there. Regardless of the coaching situation, I hope we can close with a few of them down the stretch. I would be surprised if Golden is not coaching next season. Golden will start 2015 on the hotseat like Muschamp did at UF this season. 6-6 in 2015 might get Golden fired. He will be coaching for his job.

It seems improbable that the Canes would make a change at this point without having a replacement in mind. Most programs have made their changes already.

Waiting for things that you KNOW will happen is hard. Waiting for rumors to materialize is still harder.

Remember: we have NO IDEA what Miami's bureaucracy is thinking. Fans are angry, and they assume that the lack of any action by the bureaucracy necessarily means complacency -- that they don't think the product must need improvement. But that might not be what's going on at all.

There are things happening, which the BoT/Prez might be waiting on.

1. There's football being played. If Golden were fired, you might want to wait to do that until one of your targets was no longer playing.

2. A new year just came in. Buyout numbers on coaches' contracts may decline or go away in 2015.

3. They may be waiting for Al to make recommendations on the replacements of his assistants, or for him to change his mind about recommendations he's already made.

There may be others.

Or there may not. Maybe the BoT is genuinely indifferent, as the most serious of the doom-and-gloomers would have it. (Well, there is a fringe group of DnGers that think there is a plan underfoot to destroy the football program, but in general 'indifferent' is about as strong as it gets.)

We just. Don't. Know.

Go Canes

Watched part or all of the games yesterday. Yesterday proved once again that in today's college football, there isn't a defense that can stop a high octane offense.

Point totals for the winners of the big bowls over the last few days were 42, 59, 42, 42, 40 and 37.

Also went back on ESPN.com . Working backwards from last night, saw S. Carolina was the only bowl winner to score less than 30 points and win their game.

Pretty staggering to see that.

IMO The key to 2015 for this team in my opinion will be much better execution in the red zone, with the offense scoring 7 instead of 3 consistently when they get down there.

Go Canes

Man typepad sucks.

I've finally given up on my insistence that the U should maintain its dedication to running a pro-style offense. Seeing what Oregon does with speedy skill players is just too pretty.

360Cane

Go Canes, I'm going to go ahead and clinically label you as insane. You want to try 2014 all over again in 2015 expecting different results.

360Cane

You keep high octane off the field by ground and pound. FSU's style of catch up this year just isn't the way to beat the ducks. You have to do what GT did to us. Give them the ball once in the third. []_[]

UpNorthCane27

Part of what your saying is right Go Canes the offense stumbled too much and got 3 instead of 7 and that killed us...

But we need to get rid of Golden and No'd along with jethro and paul

Go Canes

2015 is going to happen right 360?

We are actually going to play the games?

I think before you call someone insane, you should check what the statement "Ground and pound like GT" would be classified as.

DJ,
That would make sense but then ......wait....look at the last 3 hires....Clappy, Onionhead, and AlPa....not exactly HRs......more like pop outs to catcher while trying to bunt!

But the are so many coaches out there that would want to coach at UM right now the applicants would be crazy. Schiano, Dave W, Butch clearly wants back. Chud, Dorsey, Kirby smart, Lane Kiffen, I don't trust rumors of al golden being fired monday. But you never know. He isn't panning out at all and there's goals and expectations to ml be met here at temple you just had to win whatever you could. Better days ahead

Go Canes ! happy new year

VA CANE

Agree with you dj and gc.....while harder to impliment in the pros and use regularly there, it is dynamic exciting and works. I watched carefully got the jist of some of the plays.....already going to use it in my offense got the qb and athletes to do it. Makes our slow developing sloppy predictable O look bad.
AlPa would never go for any of it....way beyond his level of football comprehension. Hell they can't run simple pro set O, that O is all greek to them. I enjoyed seeing it work.....and yes FSU quit. Jimbo is a dumb MF...said Winston was great player yes said one of cfbs all time greats hardly....said Winston great person....NO!

Defending champs just gave up quit said uncle...quitters!

The Dude

It's easier to play defense when you're up by a ton of points. This is why I hate deferring until the 2nd half. Get up by 10, then 20, then 30. Force their game plan in the 3rd and 4th quaters.

It really depends on how good your defense is. If your chances of forcing a punt on the first drive of the game are good, then you should defer.

roachcane77

Somewhat off topic... but it seems to me that the "prototype" WINNING college QB has now been pretty much established as 6'4" to 6'5," very STRONG, and able to RUN as well as throw.

Vince Young, Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, (even though he couldn't throw very well), Connor Cook, J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones, James Winston, Marcus Mariota, etc.

The Manzels, Fluties, RG3s, Blake Sims, Nick Marshalls, and Justin Thomas's who are shorter, and good passers and runners will have sporadic success, but not the CONSISTENT success of the REALLY big strong running QBs.

The pocket passing, NON running QB in COLLEGE is just NOT getting it done anymore...

I like Kaaya, but his weight room numbers are horrific, and he's very slow of foot. In TODAY'S COLLEGE game, he doesn't seem to meet the winning QB prototype. Rosier is too short...

I HATE, (stress HATE), Ohio State and Urban Crier, but he's WINNING with the REALLY BIG, STRONG, and able to RUN and pass college QBs.

Granted there are HUGE amounts of other factors, ESPECIALLY GOOD OL & DL players, (and schemes), but if I'M recruiting a QB for today's college game, I'm following the QB prototypes of the Suckeyes and Ducks. BIG, STRONG, and can RUN with authority, as well as pass.

Is that asking too much? (LOL)

mi@mic@ne

These 3 4 defenses are made for a very few number of players who enter the NFL. The d players who are drafted into the NFL are basically physically able to handle their gap because they separate themselves from the hundreds of d linemen that come out of college. These d lineman and linebackers are as fast and as quick as running backs. The d line has one job that they practice and study for 40 plus hours a week.

The problem with running that 3 4 in college is that most of the d line that come out of high school are too slow to square up with the o lineman and shed him so they can close of their gap. You see this happening to Bama yesterday when OSU backs were running through big holes and getting touched by the defense after they are 5 yards down field.

The problem is that because the HS are running these spread offenses the d line play on runs has declined. Even the corners look lost on run support. And the way to stop the spread offenses is to hit the qb so that he wants to hand the ball off and throw the ball out of bounds instead of taking another hit. The only way you get o the qb is to penetrate and force the play to be run from deeper behind the line of scrimmage...we used to say string the play out. But these 3 4 defenses are not designed to penetrate. I really do not believe these new college coaches even understand how to coach the old JJ defense. Butch was part of designing the 4 down.

I saw all these 3 4s get gashed for long runs yesterday.

mi@mic@ne

Teams are only as tough and as good as they can stop the run...because if you can run then the pass is gonna be successful because everyone is coming up for run support. This is our problem...we dont stop the run and especially when the game is on the line.

Demons

Top half of the SEC west got their A$$e$ handed to them in the bowls .

mi@mic@ne

I was watching reruns of Central yesterday...they were lining up with 2 deep about 10 yards off the line of scrimmage and the rest of the d was spread out along the line of scrimmage...even the line backers would come up on the line before the play...lol they were attacking so they penetrated from the outside and forced the play inside. The d line was in the backfield all day long. lol And man bump and run on the outside

mi@mic@ne

Thats how the d players from dade are used to defensing the spread.

roachcane77

Yeah. Our NE "Temple Backpedal" defense just doesn't get it done, as we all know.

(Even at the HS level.)

mi@mic@ne

on the spread you basically give up one side of the field for quick sweeps and all of the play development from the qb riding the running back on the hand off...thats a lot more time for the play to develop than just handing the ball off... so they are giving up seconds from 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage... and these 3 4s are letting them have that time so the qb can see how the play is developing...giving the qb too much time

The Dude

Has anyone read the Canesport rumors yet?

mi@mic@ne

I played the wishbone in high school. Its the same kind of riding the running back into the hole. The only way to stop it would be to force the qb to retreat down the line of scrimmage so the play had to develop slower and deeper in the back field... penetration up the middle kills the option type offense.

raizecane

Who the heck needs Butch or any of the other names mentioned to replace AG when clearly we have bloggers who know so much about the X's and O's of the game, what scheme needs to be ran on both side of the ball, etx..... Golden handed out his talking points already?

mi@mic@ne

Its not entirely correct to say the oregon spread is successful because of the type off offense. I mean if your good at what you do then your gonna take advantage of in the right play that you outnumber them in the attack. I believe its a fast pace practice that separates them from their opponents. And I do not think that we have seen the true smash mouth response because we dont play the smash mouth in practice as a focus as they play the fast pace style in practice. Nor is the 3 4 designed to attack the spread weakness. Its like a half baked way to stop the spread.

We are used to practice the 4 down so hard that it was perfected and thats why we addressed the problems with the spread because we were better at penetrating than they were at the fast pace offense back in the day. We killed the head and the body followed.

j.w.

All quiet on the Southeastern Front.

mi@mic@ne

We used to run our style and it did not matter how much success you had in the stats because you hadnt played our attacking style...thats why we shut down their best guy cause they were not used to playing the style we perfected in practice. But now we talk about how this guy has great passing stats or this running back is great because hes a 1000 yrd runner... no we played our style and it was better than anyone else...
