On December 12th, 1992…UMSHoF member Gino Torretta became the 2nd Miami Hurricanes football player to be named the winner of the highly coveted Heisman Trophy Award!
Torretta tallied 1400 points and 310 first place votes from the 985 selectors. He beat out San Diego State's Marshall Faulk, (1,080 pts.-164 1st place votes) and Georgia's Garrison Hearst (982-140) to join Vinny Testaverde as the only Miami Hurricanes to win the prestigious award! He claimed the most total points in 4 of the 6 regions of the country, and was 2nd in the other 2 regions.
Gino Torretta was one of the most celebrated football players in the University of Miami and NCAA history. A 1991 graduate with a degree in Business Management, Torretta won both athletic and academic awards during his prolific career as a Hurricane.
He became only the second player in Hurricane history to win the coveted Heisman Trophy Award as the nation’s top collegiate football player. He was also honored as the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s Player of the Year.
The Associated Press, Kodak, Walter Camp and The Football News named Torretta first-team All-American. He also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, The Maxwell Trophy and the Davey O’Brien national quarterback awards.
Torretta was a unanimous selection as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the year for two consecutive seasons, the NCAA Today’s Top Six Award winner, Toyota Leadership Award winner and Chevrolet Offensive Player of the Year.
Torretta finished his Miami career with eleven school passing records, including career attempts (991), completions (555), yards (7,690), total offense (7,772), longest pass (99 yards to Horace Copeland vs. Arkansas, an NCAA record) and most passing yards in a game (485 vs. San Diego State).
He was tapped into Iron Arrow, considered the highest honor at the university. He has also been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Orange Bowl Hall of Honor and was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2003!
Let's go Chargers.

Didn't we have a lot of recruits on campus?

The difference is the president of a big time school wouldn't have even wasted their time on $50k.

Fwiw... That check presentation wasn't planned. The rat surprised DS when he handed it to her.
Posted by: 1mg of Epi | December 14, 2014 at 04:51 PM
Why would you not go to Auburn? They played for the NC last year, won it before that. What in the wide world of sports has UH done since......Andre Ware the fraud.....they are a minor program...I played against them in college... Bill Yeoman was the coach....they ran the run and shoot....I blocked a FG at the end to preserve a 33-30 win and they were ranked......oh the memories
Miami is not going to get a good coach cheap....those days are over.....you got a bad coach for big $ til 2019 that ought to make GC happy....real happy lover Boy AlPa til then!!!!! Muschamp will build a good D...thats his forte....he may not be a HC......AlPa is not a good HC....he is not a college assistant.....he's firmly a recruiter only!!!!!!
I am so tired of people making excuses for AlPa...nice guy horrible coach.....keep believing in that process crap....I have a process too.....that has PRODUCED 6 SBs in 8 years....thats production.....they may be 14 but they are far more developed that his players...they are fundamentally sound....aggressive talented and WIN!!!!
To continue to make excuses, for whatever reason is futile and pointless.....it shows you never played nor don't know anything about this game....I DO!!!!! Things will not change until you get a real coach here.....sorry he is not a coach....he is a recruiter ......get him a Whimp Sanderson checked jacket, some Vitalis in his hair, a few more doughnuts under his belt, a little more sweat, a Bill Haley spit curl on his forehead...put him on a corner used car lot from American Grafitti....you got it bro....AlPa JoPervs Bill Cosbys Temple revival wonder....
AlPa the used car salesman turned college recruiter!!!!!
Facts not fiction......ya get what ya paid for.....but GC is loving him some AlPa!!!!!!

Who introduced Shapiro to Alvarez?
Posted by: CaneRock | December 14, 2014 at 05:05 PM
I'd bet I could count on one hand the number of times Coley called a bubble screen this year as just about everyone I saw was a check down. I can't remember the look right now but I think it was 2 WR with 1 CB up and a Safety on top = Brad's option to screen to the Slot WR, maybe it was Flank WR, I can't remember. What I can say is in Miami's O the bubble screen is a check down 90% of the time.
Posted by: The Dude | December 14, 2014 at 02:52 PM
That screen definitely was a check down... But it's in the play book and I think in the va game when those outside blitzes were coming would've been a good time to call it.

Miami's checkdowns were really predictable this season. I saw defenses bait Miami's O several times with their looks on 3rd down.

The U's trouble with Shapiro had zero to do with the criminal ORIGINS of his money, and everything to do with his involvement with the athletic department.
Posted by: dj moonbat | December 14, 2014 at 05:46 PM
Qualcomm Stadium is always getting dogged by the Chargers, but they're lying. Qualcomm is a fine stadium. Sure it's an older stadium but it is far from rundown. Even if San Diego approved a billion dollar stadium, there's no way they'll find a better location than Mission Valley. There's no reason to spend a billion when a few million will do a really good job. I don't think LA will get them a billion dollar stadium either. The NFL is pissing me off. They keep trying to use LA to hold cities hostage into paying for their product. Qualcomm is perfectly fine.
Posted by: The Dude | December 14, 2014 at 05:51 PM
Donna punished the players for the same exact thing she did, "excepting benefits."
Posted by: SinisterCane | December 14, 2014 at 05:54 PM
I don't know a whole lot about the traffic flow of a lot of stadiums, but Qualcomm has to be near the top for the ease of getting in and out. You can even take the trolly.

Posted by: dj moonbat | December 14, 2014 at 05:46 PM
---------------------------------------------------
The origins of his money is one of the reasons why we are where we are. The criminal is a con-artist who conned rich, "intelligent" people out of billions. He was involved WITH the athletic department for his "need" to be close to the U, as well as his need for money.
He wanted to be their agents, not for free . He conned some university members, AND some of their friends.
Allowing someone like him access, because of his money, had a little to do with the trouble.

Posted by: SinisterCane | December 14, 2014 at 05:54 PM
The prez is supposed to accept benefits. Her job is to find as many people willing to give her benefits as possible. If she were able to find more people willing to give her benefits we might be able to afford a coaching staff able to figure out some wayt to defend the goal line other than the prevent.

BUTCH is not only a good recruiter but hes as good as Jimmy at evaluating talent. Butch also has the Cane mentality and brings in the player with the chip on his shoulder. You cant teach someone how to be a Cane...Butch naturally has that attitude and thats why the players that have that mentality want to play for him. BRING BACK BUTCH !!

Yea. its definitely worse to be a pedophile than a jew. The insinuation was that the fact that he is Jewish in some way has something to do with his theivery... In any event, being good at coaching pee wee football certainly doesn't require being good at being a human being.

Yes, but the NCAA didn't investigate UM because his money came from a Ponzi scheme. They investigated UM because his money went to people associated with UM athletics. His interactions with athletes and recruits would have been just as bad if he had been a local attorney trying to break into the sports agency field.

Ariz:
**This weekend did not do much for Miami with Tim Irvin. A strong in-home visit by Charlie Strong last Thursday made a big impression on him. Still a fluid situation, but the visit did not boost Miami any higher up than they already were.
**There is talk about Anthony Jones flipping to Miami and that is accurate right now. The one thing I will say is the Canes would take him as a receiver, not a running back, and I'm a fan of that move. Jones is built physically like Rashawn Scott and that is a very good thing. He could see the field early at Miami.
**Last weekend while on his official visit to Miami, Da'Vante Phillips was telling people at Miami that he would be a Cane come signing day. Of course, things like that rarely turn out to be true, but it is something worth passing along. Phillips is very close to Anthony Jones and that could play a bigger role than most realize.
**Tevon Coney took an official to Miami over the weekend, but it was just a formality. Don't expect anything to come of it.
**Miami is extremely high on JUCO OT Jahair Jones and he is absolutely a take for them. The staff has made him a major priority and they believe he has the ability to step in and play from day one. He would be a very big get.
**There has been a lot of talk about Jacksonville product Javarius Davis over the past few weeks, but I am told he is not a priority for Miami right now, mainly because of his size. He took an official this weekend, but again he is not expected in this class.
**Keep an eye on a kid that DMoney mentioned yesterday in the his post about the most underrated players in South Florida, Robert Knowles. Miami is looking at Knowles as a possible sign-and-place candidate because there are still some questions about his grades. If everything checks out with him, I would not be surprised to see Miami offer late in the game. The kid is a stud.
