On December 12th, 1992…UMSHoF member Gino Torretta became the 2nd Miami Hurricanes football player to be named the winner of the highly coveted Heisman Trophy Award!
Torretta tallied 1400 points and 310 first place votes from the 985 selectors. He beat out San Diego State's Marshall Faulk, (1,080 pts.-164 1st place votes) and Georgia's Garrison Hearst (982-140) to join Vinny Testaverde as the only Miami Hurricanes to win the prestigious award! He claimed the most total points in 4 of the 6 regions of the country, and was 2nd in the other 2 regions.
Gino Torretta was one of the most celebrated football players in the University of Miami and NCAA history. A 1991 graduate with a degree in Business Management, Torretta won both athletic and academic awards during his prolific career as a Hurricane.
He became only the second player in Hurricane history to win the coveted Heisman Trophy Award as the nation’s top collegiate football player. He was also honored as the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s Player of the Year.
The Associated Press, Kodak, Walter Camp and The Football News named Torretta first-team All-American. He also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, The Maxwell Trophy and the Davey O’Brien national quarterback awards.
Torretta was a unanimous selection as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the year for two consecutive seasons, the NCAA Today’s Top Six Award winner, Toyota Leadership Award winner and Chevrolet Offensive Player of the Year.
Torretta finished his Miami career with eleven school passing records, including career attempts (991), completions (555), yards (7,690), total offense (7,772), longest pass (99 yards to Horace Copeland vs. Arkansas, an NCAA record) and most passing yards in a game (485 vs. San Diego State).
He was tapped into Iron Arrow, considered the highest honor at the university. He has also been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Orange Bowl Hall of Honor and was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2003!

Canes coaches Carroll and Ice have been attending Central games. Ice likes Jones and they offered him. If they get Jones, it might help with Phillips too.

From the "Palm Beach Post" article posted earlier....
"Golden on Part 2: Golden said he wouldn’t be able to watch the live version of “The U Part 2,” which debuted nationwide Saturday night on ESPN."
Golden doesn't want to see a coach he wishes he could be.

It was really, really awesome. So many incredible memories of games I've been to and players I watched grow into what they became.
It is the most unique and special brand of our lifetime, in an my sport at any level.
So proud to love the Canes.

Butch! There is no substitute for what ails us!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | December 14, 2014 at 12:59 AM
Just watched the U2 and it's sad to see us fall to the mediocre state that we are in, but I understand. The cloud WAS a real issue and is slowly working its way out as players graduate. This team can be special going forward.
For Al and his hold on the team it cannot be understated how important this bowl game is for recruiting and momentum going into the offseason. With the talent we have on this team and a Ken Dorsey clone at QB next year I will expect at least 10 wins. Any coach should be able to get that with what we have coming back next year in the conference we're in. I think Al is gone next year, however one way or another. He sucks he's fired, he wins big he leaves for easier pastures.
THEN BUTCH COMES BACK! Haha

Love the ending with the 6 Championships and then the LATE penalty flag.
I was AT that game... it was unbelievable how late that flag came out.
Wish they had included the Orange Bowl 58 game home win streak in those ending stats.
Let's Go CANES!

It's true, what others have already said...
Those Billy Corben 30 for 30 pieces are a HUGE recruiting tool for our school & coaches. You can't BUY that kind of exposure.
Posted by: roachcane77 | December 14, 2014 at 08:25 AM
We are Navy... With 10 NFLers.
http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/university-of-miami-hurricanes-college-football/
Before the Hurricanes came back from the brink, they were as low as they are now. Miami’s mid-to-late 1990s deterioration reached its nadir at the end of 1997, the program’s first losing season in 18 years. When the final whistle blew on that campaign, Miami had a +3.8 Elo rating,1 which means Miami would have been favored by just 3.8 points against an average FBS team on a neutral field. To use 2014 teams as a comparison, Miami was the equivalent of this year’s Colorado State or Navy teams — a far cry from their dominant squads of the 1980s and early 1990s. (Although this year’s team is even worse, with a rating of +2.0.)

For as depressing as that was to watch, don't lose sight of what I think is the most important take away... The U, no matter how bad it is, will always be within arms reach of dominance. The most important resource in football is in our backyard.

Posted by: roachcane77 | December 14, 2014 at 08:25 AM
It's absolutely true. For one thing, Corben did a good job. Few of the original 30 for 30 episodes can stand up to "The U." It's really on a par with a good-quality piece by NFL Films.
But also, the subject matter is one that people will watch. It appears that ABC showed "The U" in the middle of Saturday afternoon as a courtesy to the football junkies who didn't want to watch the Army/Navy game. And I'm sure that not everyone who took them up on the offer was a pre-existing 'Canes fan.
As dominant as Alabama is over college football right now, it would be completely stupid to make a movie out of the team twenty years down the road -- much less TWO movies. Because it's just standard college football, done really well.
The 'Canes, though, were NOT LIKE other football teams. There was some thuggery, yes -- but Oklahoma and Nebraska had plenty of thuggery, too. People call it "swagger," what made them different. But it's beyond confidence and cockiness, because they were dead serious about their football. They were playing for the high of just messing opponents UP. BAD.
And they were "blacker" than anybody else. At a time when America was learning to love hip-hop music, there was also a team dominating college football that was way, way more urban than anybody else. Those guys didn't even bother to act like "blue collar, lunch pail guys" like the sportscasters always said they loved. F that.
So Corben's documentaries are well made, and they're actually about an interesting topic -- not just about a couple decades' worth of good football teams at a small private school. They make it possible for a new generation to GET what it was all about.
If, eventually, Miami wants to stop being just another (bad) college football team again, there will be some players who want to sign up.

I don't understand why you have to be "On Al's side" for pointing out how much the Shapiro fiasco further decimated a program that was already in very bad shape.
It's ok to acknowledge it and still feel change is necessary.

Oh stop it! Stop making so much sense already.
Accepting the FACT that "The Cloud" had anything to do with the team's struggles over the last four years just gives people one less reason to hate Al Golden. And we ALL know how much fun hating can be now don't we? Why it is practically a sport of its own, isn't it?
