The University of Miami track and field program had a solid start to its stay at the 2015 Rod McCravy Memorial Meet. The Canes had several student-athletes compete on the opening day of the two-day meet on the University of Kentucky campus.
“I’m excited about this team and although it is early in the season, I wanted to see how we handled competing against some of the nation’s best,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “Our combined event athletes came out with a strong effort and Lea [Johnson] came out and competed with some of the best throwers in the country and had a season-best.”
Freshman Amy Taintor finished sixth in the women's pentathlon with a score of 3,612 points that ranks third in Miami history. Taintor closed out the pentathlon with a victory in the women's 800m run, posting a time of 2:17.89. Fellow freshman Stefani Kerrison placed 10th in the women’s pentathlon with 3,400 points.
Senior Lea Johnson placed fourth in the women’s weight throw with a season-best mark of 20.46m. Junior Tiffany Okieme just missed a Top 5 finish in the women’s weight throw, placing sixth with a mark of 19.65m. On the men’s side, sophomore Carlos Mangum finished ninth overall in the weight throw with a mark of 18.62m.
Junior John-Patrick Friday placed fifth in the men’s high jump with a mark of 2.04m. Fellow junior Dakota Dailey-Harris finished sixth overall in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.77m.
Josh Johnson and Tracy Howard competed in the men’s 200m dash, while Jokira Jiles and Lateisha Philson represented Miami in the women’s 200m dash.
The Hurricanes are one of 15 teams competing at the University of Kentucky, including 2014 Men’s and Women’s NCAA Indoor Champion Oregon, 2014 Women’s SEC Indoor Champion Florida, 2014 Men’s SEC Indoor Champion Arkansas, 2014 Big XII Women’s Indoor Champion Texas and 2014 Men’s and Women’s ACC Indoor Champion Florida State. LSU, Georgia, Baylor, Virginia, Ohio State, USC, Missouri, Illinois and the host Kentucky Wildcats round out a talent-rich field that will compete in Lexington.

@mattyports: I'll make a Bold Prediction™ and say Jordan Scarlett sticks with Miami. Heard and seen much lately that leads me to believe this.

Where's the video of the ones who are?

Looking back on the season, I found the entire year odd. Although the Canes finished with an absurd 7 losses, there were numerous times (apart from the final three games of the season) that I felt the team as a whole was playing better than I had seen during Golden's tenure. That too sounds absurd. But then I looked I looked at the numbers.
First, here's the average points scored, points allowed, and margin of defeat annually in Miami's losses since 2004:
2004 (3): 18 PF, 23 PA, 05 point deficit
2005 (3): 07 PF, 21 PA, 15 point deficit
2006 (6): 12 PF, 20 PA, 08 point deficit
2007 (7): 14 PF, 34 PA, 20 point deficit
2008 (6): 23 PF, 33 PA, 10 point deficit
2009 (4): 21 PF, 31 PA, 10 point deficit
2010 (6): 19 PF, 32 PA, 13 point deficit
2011 (6): 23 PF, 29 PA, 06 point deficit
2012 (5): 18 PF, 37 PA, 17 point deficit
2013 (4): 20 PF, 42 PA, 22 point deficit
2014 (7): 21 PF, 33 PA, 12 point deficit
Looking at the performance during Canes losses, Miami was considerably closer than in previous years. The Canes were never blown out, which is another stat:
Number of blowouts (3 TD or more loss)
2004 (3): none
2005 (3): 1
2006 (6): 1
2007 (7): 3
2008 (6): 1
2009 (4): 1
2010 (6): 1
2011 (6): none
2012 (5): 2
2013 (4): 2
2014 (7): none
This speaks again to something that has been spoken of much on this blog in the last six months - that we could have won all of our games. We out talented all but FSU, and had the Seminoles in a position to beat them. So what went wrong?

Again, I don't know the Xs and Os like others here (VA). Statistically this was a much more competitive Miami team in the losses that they sustained. Statistically, it's hard to see why they lost 7 games when the team was better.

Why?
We've been losing more SF talent the we've been getting. it's valuable to understand why, especially on the heels of a losing season after which no staff changes were made.

Many of us have been saying all year that statistics are meaningless. 15th best D? Lol
The stats look better because the talent on the field has progressively improved. The losses occur because the talent can't overcome the scheme. The defense gives us long drives by design. The O slow down play to protect the D.
A 4 yard rush is considered a won down in our scheme. Drives are stopped when the O makes a mistake not when the D makes a play... By design. The offense takes what it's given and The net result is an inability to get off the field.
The offense is designed to take pressure of the defense, hence the check-with-me to run the clock down, and riding the the running back for far too long. The net result is explosive players forced to play slow, in order to keep the ball away from the opposing O.
And so we go 6-7 with 9 or so NFLers.

TonyCane...even if you don't understand the Xs & Os, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand, that you don't leave the Center uncovered against GT...or to put LBs on slot WRs against damn near every team...and then when the season's over, the HC wants to bitch & gripe about only having 5 DBs, well NO $H!T SHERLOCK, you have 250lb LBs COVERING EM'!

Testing like this can give you more knowledge on players and a competitive advantage on the field. These are things UM should invest in.

Is the administration a total joke? Absolutely. But again Im stuck loving these canes. I've called out to many bandwagon gator/fsu clowns when there team make it to the top.

That was a good explanation. Numbers do not show everything. The "the check-with-me to run the clock down" is an interesting point. I've wondered what was up with that the last two years. Others on the blog have said it was merely to give Kayaa and Morris the freedom to audible based on what the defense was giving them. It seemed distruptive to the flow of the offense.

Love Coach L. Seems to get the most out of his players. Each player may be limited, but he accentuates what they do well and does not put them in a position to loose or fail. He is definitely the best Canes coach and one of the best in college basketball.
