From a longtime reader (and sometimes poster) of the blog since SS days...
I keep seeing the "Miami may have 8 players drafted and went 6-7" talk as an example of how terrible the coaching is. I think it's safe to say that there was plenty of top end talent on this team.
Nobody could deny that with the likes of Duke, Denzel, Clive, and Flowers.
But I'm not sure how anyone could look at the team and not see massive holes in depth and talent at certain positions. That basically explains the record.
The three main causes I see are:
1) The NCAA investigation and scholarship losses. I don't know how anyone could deny the investigation having an effect on recruiting.
Example conversation:
Parent: UF and FSU said you're going to get the death penalty. Is that true?
Golden: The truth is, we don't know.
Parent: When will the investigation be over?
Golden: The truth is, we don't know.
How could this NOT effect recruiting? Do you really think we sign the likes of Earl Moore and Sunny Odogwu if we weren't under the investigation?
2) Injuries and suspended players. Our depth problem at OL was pretty apparent, especially as the season went on. Once McDermott and Gadbois went down and the shuffle started it got a lot worse. Then you take in Rashawn Jenkins going down, AQM gone for the season, Wyche with the achilles was a setback (I know I'm not sold on him either), and Figueroa getting kicked off the team at an already thin position and inconsistencies can happen.
3) Golden has missed at certain positions really bad, the most obvious being DL. There just isn't a lot of talent there. Ferman has written at length on all the players we sign that didn't show up, never played, and got kicked off. It's hard to deny a lot of the names when you go back and look at the classes we had.
I only bring these up to try and maybe spur a little healthy debate instead of the constant, never ending, pointless bickering and name calling that goes on here and makes this place unreadable at times.

Great piece by TLuv and Soup. Go Canes. Our Canes need to be more efficient and more aggressive to improve I say we finish 9-4 or 10-4 in 2015. Shout out to our Men's basketball team. ,40 minutes of L baby. Go Canes!

Well said TLuv.
I don't think that acknowledging the circumstances U did lets Al off the hook for the 4 game losing streak though. And I do believe the overall depth and talent was sufficient to win the Coastal last year. Thanks for the effort to elevate the level of "discussion" on the blog.
Go CANES

If we would have gone say 8-4 this article would be more accurate. Even with the issues named above we STILL had more talent and depth (even if young) than just about every teams we lost to.
Posted by: UMike | January 23, 2015 at 06:16 AM
Losing to the likes of UVA makes it pretty clear the problem is coaching and not personel, no matter how badly the coaches want you to believe it.
If we had just lost a major bowl game, to a top 10 team, then I could see the excuses above being valid. We did not lose in a major bowl game, and are ranked in the bottom half of FBS.
Posted by: 1mg of Epi | January 23, 2015 at 07:21 AM
Good article TLuv and Go Canes. Although there may have been some excuses for some of the losses this year, Golden's losing season occurred at the right time for him with an outgoing President. With a new president and high expectations among some BOTs, I don't think Golden will survive next season without at least 9 wins, a coastal division championship and a top 10-15 recruiting class.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | January 23, 2015 at 07:34 AM
That's why I posted the stats last night re: losses. Last season was weird and hard to quantify statistically, apart from the fact that we had 7 losses. We improved greatly on pass defense and slightly on rush defense, and offensively we were about the same year over year (except for penalties). Not captured was time of possession or turnovers leading to touchdowns.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 23, 2015 at 07:56 AM
Good piece..... I think Cornerback is a issue also, our DB coach Williams aint very good IMHO... we need to move Hurlie Brown to DB coach, and hire a new LB coach.... hopefully coach Barrow comes back
Posted by: DeeCane | January 23, 2015 at 08:50 AM
IMO, the position coaches wont matter if their still taught all the techniques of this failed scheme. But, little things like getting your head turned around should be taught no matter the scheme. It amazes me how many INTS or pass deflections where left our there cause the DB's never get their head turned.

This appears to be good for us. Can't imagine him going to that offense instead of ours:
- Booker T. receiver Antonio Callaway, who many thought would be visiting Alabama and Florida down the stretch, is with Mark Walton on a visit to West Virginia this weekend and will be at Florida next weekend.

Congrats to the hoops team, nice win!
Solid post TLuv:
Quick add-on to the depth issues. Golden has had his share of problems with recruiting, reaching and missing certain kids. Had his issues with the 2011 class, which has been discussed already.
But then add on the 2010 class which had 30 players signed, but after transfers/dismissals, remained with only 20 by the first game in 2011.
That 2010 class had some gems in it, so dont get it confused with the class as a whole not being productive, it just lacked the quantity needed for quality depth purposes.
/no, we should not have lost the last 3 games. They are l-l-legit reasons why the total time at UM is what it is.

Royal Palm Beach LB Perry sticks with 'Canes, set to enroll
Charles Perry keeps track of Miami football. Perry, the Royal Palm Beach linebacker prospect, follows the news of the Hurricanes on the web and on social media.
Yet one thing he’s not following is the example of several recent UM decommits.

When you're recruiting from a position of weakness like we were at that time youre forced to take chances on players you may not normally take.
And those kids would have all been seniors or redshirt seniors. They have everything to do with this year's team.
Posted by: Go,GoCanes! | January 23, 2015 at 09:54 AM
The main problem is attitude. I am tired of these kids expecting to be good just because they wear the U on their helmets. We should leave their names on their jerseys and take away the U on the helmets until they earn it.

And heart....this team had very little heart. I was at the Georgia Tech game and saw more heart from Sebastian than I did the team as they flat got run over by a team that was nowhere near as talented.

Carlton Davis when asked about why he didn't choose Miami:
"I grew up a Miami Hurricane fan. And they came on right when Ohio State came on. I just felt that it wasn't the place for me. I just felt like they wasn't developing their players enough for me, and that's why I went to Ohio State."

Developing players: top notch
Gameday results: bottom notch
STOCK UP
Players from Miami
With what the Miami players showed this week, it's almost impossible to figure out how the Hurricanes finished 6-7 this season. Tight end Clive Walford showed better athleticism than expected – especially on a diving catch Wednesday – and should be back in the discussion as being the first tight end drafted. Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett relied on his speed to beat defensive backs, whether he was working the slot or outside. Both of those players could be second-round picks. Linebacker Denzel Perryman looked as expected before he got injured. Cornerback Ladarius Gunter showed flashes. Really, that's all he needed to do. At 6-foot-1 and 203 pounds, a team is going to love Gunter's length and ability to get his hand up and tip away passes.

he's been there 1 year, though they had a rough season you could already see the mentality they'll have moving forward. If he can get through the next 2 seasons he'll make them NT contenders IMO.

I disagree with the level of Player development. Yes players are being drafted but where would chick go in draft if he played in a 4-3, Gunter if played more press man to man, would Howard/Bush come out early if they could show case their skill set. Golden's is costing these Dudes $$$$$$$

For every Chick & Howard you throw out, there is a Perryman, Gunter, Walford, Dorsett, Duke out there as well.
How many times does someone post "look at all the talent that is getting grades"? The recruiting classes have not been top 5 (stars), yet getting top 2 in players looked at (draft)?
From the 2014 draft:
-A five-star recruit had a three-in-five chance of getting drafted (16 of 27).
-A four-star had a one-in-five chance (77 of 395).
-A three-star had a one-in-18 chance (92 of 1,644).
-A two-star/unrated recruit had a one-in-34 chance (71 of 2,434).
UM is developing players.

SMFH! FSU just got a commitment from this woman's son (Brian Bell):
The Valdosta Daily Times
"Karen Bell has had it with the rumor-mongering about her family’s connection to the death of Kendrick Johnson on social networking sites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
“If you dare to stand up for what is truthful, you become a target for bullying and harassment,” said the mother of two teenage sons who have been the subject of the rumors. “I should not have to be quiet.”
Since Johnson’s lifeless body was found in a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School more than a year ago, the Bells’ lives have changed. Karen Bell has decided to speak out against the not-so-quiet whisper campaign accusing her sons of murder.
Her husband, an FBI agent, cannot talk publicly about the hearsay and other loose talk blurring the line between fact and fiction on the Internet.
For more than a year, anonymous rumors have forced Bell’s children to live different lives even though an investigation by the sheriff’s office and an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined Johnson died from a freak accident when he
became trapped upside down in a gym mat while trying to retrieve an athletic shoe.
The GBI autopsy said Johnson died of “positional asphyxia” that prevented him from breathing. Johnson’s parents believe he was the victim of foul play, possibly murder, pointing to a second autopsy they commissioned by a private pathologist that said their son appeared to die from a fatal blow to a carotid artery in his neck. U.S. Attorney Michael Moore is currently reviewing evidence in the case.
In the meantime, Karen Bell said, her sons are being falsely accused and bullied on social network sites, causing them anguish and concern for their safety.
She said her oldest son, 18, was forced to quit his job at a local grocery store in November after Twitter users posted online that they knew where he worked."
