For example, my parents and family HATE the Tennessee Titans and hope they lose every game but they tailgate at EVERY SINGLE game rain, sleet, or snow! But please believe that people don't go inside to watch the games anymore, they can't even give tickets away!

Do you really expect them to do that to incoming recruits?

Longtime canes fan, been a fan since Mira was the QB. Used to go to a lot of home games when we lived in Miami. Brought my family up to be canes fans. Since we moved away, we try to go to games when the canes are near us. As a family we watched one of the last home games against Marshall at the Orange bowl. Long story short I'm tired and disgusted with the coaches and admin. I will no longer waste anymore time or money on the program. I'll come back after I read something on ESPN.

Golden a F@@king chump

His letter to the players

2014, for a variety of reasons, was a difficult year for all of us. Truth is none of that matters today. None of it. The only thing that matters is that we learn and grow from it. A year ago at this time TCU was 4 & 8 and did not have the benefit of participating in a bowl game. This year, #6 TCU faced #9 Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl! Those same TCU Horned Frogs. Same Weight Room, Same Playbook, Same Uniforms….Yet a Much DIFFERENT TEAM!

So what changed?

A TEAM is reborn every year. And what makes the difference from year to year is a team’s leadership, being great teammates (Squashing 3rd Parties and hidden agendas) and it’s volition - what team and team members are willing to give up to achieve shared goals! You cannot be a great leader, great teammate or a Championship Team without giving something up. Last year our volition (as determined by the unity council) boiled down to 5 simple values:
1. UNSELFISH – Contribution to others and encouragement; Form of appreciation and Gratitude. No energy Vampires!
2. FOCUSED – Eliminate thinking about the next level. Ignore the Noise (NFL/AGENT/MEDIA). Let go of the outcome. Put Team First!
3. UNIFIED – More team unity; no separation among us (mix more offense and defense). Be a Great Teammate!
4. COMMUNICATE – See it as more of a partnership. Matter of Trust! Let go of agenda. Be solution oriented. Tough Teams Talk!
5. ACCOUNTABLE – Overcome fear of conflict. Be authentic with others. You job is to never get discouraged with the responsibility to hold each other accountable. We need great leaders!

I should post the link anyway lol

Why just read this:

David Njoku

WR/TE - 6'4 225 - Cedar Grove, NJ

Njoku chose UM over Rutgers, Ohio State, and Penn State among others...

Caught 40 passes for 981 yards and scored 20 total TDs (including running quite a few in) his senior season in H.S. Also starred in track in the high jump (NJ State record holder with 7 feet even) and triple jump. Not to mention, scoring over 1,000 points in his career on the hardwood.

Is simply put, an exceptional athlete (4.4 range in the 40 as well).

Based on his frame, likely puts on some weight and moves to TE where he can be a Shannon Sharpe type down the line (note: comparing in style and not necessarily skill just yet).

Is very natural with the ball in his hands, and displays great balance, power, and a very good stiff arm to boot.

Njoku as a track star won two state titles in a row in High Jump.

If we started at 75, that's on Al because he only had to reduce by 3.

Or overtly by always bringing up the cloud --say cloud 1 more time-- did it hurt recruiting? ok, sure. I asked this on the last blob --did we still have the highest ranked classes in the coastal? but we can't beat the bottom feeders of the worst division in the worst power 5 conference?

assertations that quality coaches would have lined up here to run this program for less than market value everyone claims we pay, all during the middle of the most sensationalalized NCAA investigation in decades.

If he wantedto sound credible, then he shouldn't include total nonsense too. It detracts from all the valid points he's made.

Posted by: Go Canes | January 06, 2015 at 12:16 PM

Did he say quality coache?. The same no names that always get this coach like he was when hired would still have taken it.

What he says is true... But really what does it matter? He could give some fiery brimstone interview, fire coaches and whatever else we want to see. Won't change the fact that his tactical skills are horrible and now that recruits are seeing it, and dropping off his radar, it's only a matter of time until this program is completely gutted. When that happens, and he misses bowl games, he will be fired.

It will be at this point that even the second tier crap coaches won't want to come here.

UMike

J'Ville Cane

Perhaps more troubling is the shifting standard. Whatever he needs to manipulate to make sure he doesn’t actually have to change anything and take responsibility is the new standard. Last year, faced with that 90th ranked defense, one of the reasons Golden gave for not changing defensive coordinators was the 9-4 team record. Now that the team is 6-7, shouldn’t there be change, by his own standard? No, of course not.

2013: Judge the defense by the team’s record.

2014: Judge the defense on total defense.

The Al Golden Interview: Delusional and Dangerous

By Vishnu Parasuraman

Canesport‘s Gary Ferman found Al Golden. In a lengthy interview, Golden attempted to lay out his road map for moving the Canes forward. He talked positively about all the progress they are making.

In reality, what Golden is doing is betting on the fact that people aren’t paying attention. Either in the press or in the decision making positions at the University of Miami.

If you look beyond the rhetoric and the reintroduction of several familiar pet phrases, what we are left with is someone who is out of ideas, has made no progress (in fact, has regressed), and is highly manipulative. There is no acknowledgement of basic reality, no responsibility taken for issues that are clearly his fault, and an endless trail of excuses. Most importantly, there are no specific solutions offered.

Those that manipulate without substance get their comeuppance. It’s no wonder that Duke Johnson’s mom said that “most” players would transfer if they didn’t have to sit out a year.

The interview is long, but I recommend reading the entire thing. It’s important to get a sense of the man. After reading it, anyone paying any sort of attention to the program over the last four years is left with someone who has once again done two key things:
1.Refused to commit to any sort of timetable for success, instead choosing to push it out to 2016 and 2017 as his first sanction-free recruiting classes when he can get started.
2.Refused to even provide a definition for success.

His primary concern is not success, but self-preservation. To that end, he has apparently been able to manipulate enough people to save his job. But in reality, his continued employment will only set back the program. Every day he is here, doing what’s in his personal interest, even at the expense of the program, will take his successor that much more time to correct.

I’ll go into detail on a few points, rather than go exhaustively through the entire thing, since much of it is fluff.

The Interview

The first red flag comes from Gary Ferman, not Al Golden, when Ferman tells us: “And before you start dissecting or ripping his words, understand that everything he says comes with backup that makes a world of sense with the unknown of Saturday football afternoons removed from the equation.”

He did a lengthy interview to get his message out, but doesn’t want his words dissected? Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Now, excuse me while I go ahead and dissect his words.

“Eighteen months ago no one would have touched this job.”

18 months ago was July of 2013.

No one would have touched this job after the school had gone in front of the NCAA committee? After the NCAA had screwed up the investigation? After everyone knew that any sort of heavy sanctions would have lead to a serious protest, not just from Miami, but nationally from media? How did he go from “are you kidding me?” to “this place is a dumpster fire?” He discusses the facility upgrades, that are great, but he took the job with those old facilities in place. So what exactly is he even talking about? It’s pure nonsense, but he’s once again trying to exaggerate the scandal and hope we are too ignorant to see it.

Excuse me, Al. This is the University of Miami. One of the premier athletic and academic collegiate institutions in the country. The entire campus could be on fire, and someone would “touch it.” By the way, while you were suffering through this untouchable period of time, the basketball team was winning the ACC. With the same cloud.

Golden’s lack of respect and appreciation for this program has been seeping out more and more since Penn State left him at the altar, and that is reinforced here. This is outrageous. He owes the entire university community an apology.

“But the 2016 and 2017 classes … they will have the best facilities ever afforded Miami Hurricanes and have absolutely no ramifications of the NCAA case. Zero. So they see the world a lot differently than recruits and parents that lived through the 28-month investigation.”

Great, he’s now moving the expectations of any sort of success to 2016 and 2017? First the president of the school says this is his first year, now he is saying his first full year is 2016.

“And perhaps the greatest change is the most inconspicuous – an Athletic Director that wants to be here long-term. My first two years on the job we were in the middle of chaos and we had four different AD’s. It’s impossible to move forward like that.”

The lie detector determined that was a lie.

First, there is a problem here. The closeness of Athletic Director Blake James to Al Golden is the only reason Golden still has a job. It’s the same reason Defensive Coordinator Mark D’Onofrio still has a job. It’s a bunch of cronies supporting each other. Anyone independently evaluating this disaster would fire all three of them. But James evaluates Golden, who evaluates D’Onofrio…so all three keep their jobs despite abhorrent job performance.

But the lie? This revolving door of Athletic Directors nonsense he is talking about. Kirby Hocutt left almost immediately after hiring Golden, in February of 2011. He was replaced by Shawn Eichorst in April of that year, and Eichorst held down the job for 18 months before being replaced by James on an interim and then permanent basis. I don’t know where he got four ADs from, perhaps whoever was doing the job in March of 2011?

Now, for Golden’s position to hold water, one would have to believe that Eichorst had one foot out the door the second he arrived and everyone knew it even though Eichorst was notoriously secretive. What Golden is actually doing here is trying to exaggerate the “challenges” he’s faced by using a known fact (that Miami lost two ADs, Hocutt and Eichorst, 18 months apart) and manipulating it to generate sympathy for himself.

“I’m responsible for all of it. At least I am brave enough to stand up and say it. I’ll take it all on my shoulders.”

And now we’ve reached Peak Golden.

He wants credit for taking responsibility for shortcomings, but he doesn’t actually take responsibility. He just says he does. What he immediately follows this “it’s on me” jargon with is a defense of his defense.

“We went from 90 to 15 in total defense and played eight top 50 offenses in the country. Overall, too many people blame the defense all the time and as much as we tell our guys to ignore the noise, it’s only natural for our seniors to grow sick and tired of it. The truth is this year’s team was, in many ways, better than last year’s team. Our tackling all year was so much better.”

They did do that. Factually, the D improved significantly. The problem? First, the Canes intentionally manipulated this statistic by playing an insanely slow pace that helped the total defense, but hurt the team as a whole. That’s a massive problem. You don’t coach to a statistic, you coach to victory.

The Canes have now played this slow pace twice, in 2011 and 2014, and produced Golden’s two best defenses. They also went 6-6 in 2011 and 6-7 in 2014. It’s not a coincidence. When you cannibalize your offense to help your defense, the defensive statistics improve, but the team is worse off.

He then proceeded to blame the offense for the worse record this year versus 2013. I’m not going to even bother going through that. There are three other issues that need to be addressed.

“It was a huge undertaking over a three-year period to go from 90th in total defense to 15th.”

Except he didn’t take the defense from 90th. The 2010 defense was ranked 22nd. He immediately destroyed that defense, taking it to 45th in 2011, and to a historically bad 116th in 2012. Now, Golden wants credit for “fixing” it? Is this a joke? You break something, fix it into a worse version of itself (the 2010 team, despite the pace of play issues inflating the stat for the 2014 team, still allowed less yards per game than Golden’s “fixed” 2014 version), and then want credit? This is a fireable offense. You wasted four years to get it near but worse than where it was, and in order to do that had to completely shut down the offense?

“We can’t take every player from South Florida.”

No one has ever argued this. But the 2015 class currently has SIX South Florida kids. Last year’s had ELEVEN. And the Canes recently lost Michael Irvin’s nephew to Texas. There is a South Florida recruiting disaster occurring at Miami, and pretending like the reason people are upset is that the Canes aren’t taking “every player” from South Florida ignores the actual issue.

“I have been working since the plane landed from Shreveport to improve our systems, substance, and style, but not our standards. Our standards are non-negotiable.”

This sounds great, except what exactly are those standards? They used to be to win National Championships. Golden openly talked about that when he arrived at Miami. Now? Blake James openly discussed needing to get back to winning ACC Championships, but didn’t want to put a timeline on it. Golden never says what the record needs to be in 2015, probably so that after the year he can spin whatever the record is.

This statement from Golden is an outright lie. The standard is so far compromised that it is no longer recognizable. And perhaps the greatest indicator of that is not that Golden continues to never commit to anything tangible, or that his athletic director follows suit, but that Golden still has a job for doing exactly what his predecessor did.

Golden Must Be Fired Immediately To Prevent Setting the Program Back Several Years

What we are left with is the portrait of someone who is not just doing a poor job, but who is more concerned with self preservation on his terms (changing nothing about himself or his coaching) than with actually fixing the program. Ferman mentions “no final decisions” have been made on staff changes, although Golden has been meeting one-on-one with each coach since the bowl game.

He’s been meeting with coaches for over a week, but doesn’t know what he’s doing yet? Well, at least that explains the massive number of delay of game penalties the Canes accumulate.

Someone who cannot recognize problems cannot fix them. And time and again, Golden either completely ignores issues or misinterprets them.

“We had our heart broken in the FSU game and did not recover.”

Ridiculous. Yes, the FSU game started a four-game losing streak. The problem? The Canes had already lost three times. To pretend like everything was going well until the FSU collapse is to ignore reality.

To put things in perspective, the Canes lost as many times between September 1st and October 4th of this year as Urban Meyer has lost in THREE YEARS at Ohio State.

That is even with losing his top two QBs this year. That’s having inherited a team that went 6-7 in the year before he arrived, including losing to Golden’s Miami team in 2011. All those Miami losses occurred more than a month before the Canes played FSU.

He claims Miami is 18 months into a 36-month infrastructure overhaul, as if that somehow pushes out his timetable for success. He’s already been here for four years, what does an infrastructure improvement halfway through his tenure have to do with anything? And who cares when it completes? Is he out there with a hard hat? What is this drivel?

What does any of this have to do with him trying to cover one of the nation’s best wide receivers with Darrion Owens, and therefore swinging the entire bowl game in South Carolina’s favor?

Nothing. No, what Golden is doing is classic political manipulation. He is pushing his own timetable out. And he will not be pinned down with specifics, because then someone might actually hold him to something.

The most damning indictment is that one could replay his 2013 postseason interviews, and they are eerily similar to these. Golden starts from the point where he isn’t the problem, then works backward from there, figuring out how to justify that opinion.

And that’s what makes him dangerous. The Canes are losing South Florida recruits left and right, even legacies. Overall, they continue to fall further and further behind, thanks to Golden. FSU is currently ranked 2nd, 2nd, and 6th in the recruiting rankings from Rivals, Scout, and 247, respectively. Miami’s rankings? 18th, 20th, and 30th. This isn’t a wait-and-see situation. This is desperate.

That’s where we’ve arrived. A head coach, in the face of one of the worst seasons in recent school history, has decided that there is nothing wrong that “commitment” can’t fix. Never mind the five blowout losses, the three home losses, the 6-7 record, the falloff in South Florida recruiting.

Left to his own devices, Golden will continue in perpetuity, continue to further lose South Florida, continue to ignore obvious issues, continue to stay the course, even though the course dipped downward considerably in 2014. Which is precisely why Golden should not be left to his own devices.

This interview was designed to quell concerns. To show that Golden was still in charge, still in control, and had a plan to carry the program forward.

Instead it merely reinforced that his reality, the one Golden is painting in his own mind to justify his own failings, is not the actual reality. And because of that, his solutions don’t address real problems, which are allowed to fester and worsen. This interview should remove any doubt about Golden’s job status, just not the way it was intended to.

It’s always possible for anyone to turn something around, even by accident. So, I hope if Golden is here next year, this is patient zero in a crow eating session after he leads Miami to the College Football Playoff.

But in reality, the person who addressed the issues facing this program in the manner Golden just did, after four years in charge, should not be given a fifth year. After four years, you should have substance, not fluff, you should have accomplishments, not vague goals, and you should have a firm grasp over your program, not a plan targeting recruiting classes several years in the future.

This program is bigger than Al Golden and Blake James. It belongs to the people of South Florida. A beacon of hope for those who dream of going to college and star where their heroes starred, to make good for their city. Someone in charge needs to take it away from those that don’t appreciate and understand it, and give it back to the people before it is run further aground and becomes unrecognizable.

I’m reminded of the question offered up to former Enron CEO Ken Lay, as Enron collapsed in the early 2000s, during an employee Q&A after Lay said they were going to rebuild the company and restore the stock price, completely ignoring the massive plunge it had already taken.
