Looking back at each signing classes under Golden, the first two were wrecked by very early departures or failures to qualify. TWENTY ONE of the fifty two players that committed in 2011 and 2012 were off the team within two seasons, and an additional three failed to qualify. The majority came from the 2012 class. It's part of the reason that our roster level was depleted.
2011:
Failed to qualify:2 (Grooms, Kinard)
Left after one year: 1
Left after two years: 4 (Grimble, Finnie, Johnson, Paul) *not counting Botts
2012:
Failed to qualify:1 (Jean-Louis)
Left after one year: 10 (Briscoe, Carter, Davis, Dewey, Dillard, Ivery, Terry, Thompson, Witt, Lockhart)
Left after two years: 4 (Blue, Dortch, Hoilett, Hope)
2013:
Failed to qualify:3 (Bond, Lockley, Griffith)
Left after one year: 2 (Olsen, Sandland)
Left after two years: 1 (Lewis)
2014:
Failed to qualify: none
Left after one year: 1 (Hester)
Correct me if I am wrong but I am counting just 72 scholarship players for the Hurricanes in their opening game against Louisville (71 recruits, one transfer). In addition, 2 of them did not play in 2014 due to injury and suspension, and a third player transferred less than two weeks later.
I knew that we were under the scholarship limit, I had no idea that we were that far under the limit. And roughly 16 were redshirted. Were we really that low in overall depth?
WHAT?!...AGAIN?!...FIRST!

Good, accurate info as usual Tony. Met with the usual ridicule I see from the big picture crew.
Count the ones who traveled or it's just spin?
Is that a joke or real statement?
So injured players, redshirts and walk-ons somehow have to count now to make things better than they were?
I'm sure Nick Saban would have had McDermott out there on crutches playing like an All American. Undersized Demetrius Jackson who desoerately needed a year to develop? Would have been a real game changer but Golden CHOSE to redshirt him.
Lol.
Never let the facts get in the way of tunnel vision hate.
Next we'll here all this is bs. That we got down to 70 because Golden was too inept to fill the roster with good players, not because he was under strict orders to shave numbers in anticipation of heavy sanctions. A fate we were saved from only by miracle, the NCAA's own evil, greed and ineptitude taking away any shot of making us the example they so desperately wanted us to be.
But I forgot, all that was made up anyway.
Tony if you get the chance, back out players lost to injury and the ones redshirted "by choice" and see where this roster ended up.
Remember, it's Golden 100%. Every other factor 0%.

I will say this though...if we didn't have 2 QB transfers in 2010, subsequently leading to burning Stephen Morris' RS, Stephen Morris would've been a Senior in 2014, and Kaaya wouldn't have had to play as a true frosh.

Tony - in addition to what you have posted, we can also add the 2010 recruiting class which was large in number at the time, 30 signees. After non qualifiers and transfers/suspension, only 20 were left before the first game of the 2011 season.
Before you think that class had no impact on last year - Walford, Linder, Bunche, McDermott were part of that class.

Wow, SOUP, if you've actively decided to throw in your lot with the excuse-makers, I wish you well. I guess slurpers need a place to call their own.
There's GOOD REASON to be negative.
Enough. I'm finished.

"You know, I hear all this talk coming out of Miami. Talk about lack of depth, lack of talent, lack of upperclassmen, clouds, and all kinds of loser excuses. I just went through the first college football playoff, and destroyed the favorite in the title game. All with my 3rd string QB. Who am I?"
Excuses are like assholes. Everyone has one and they all stink. We suck and have been sucking for over 10 years. Get with it and stop the excuses as to why we're not competing with Oregon and Alabama. W can't even beat borderline bowl eligible teams.
But hey, at least we have our excuses to help us sleep at night. []_[]

Dj of course there's good reason to be negative. No one is denying Golden is a part of that.
But there are multiple reasons for where we are, not just one.
Pointing that out, like Tony just pointed out, doesn't make you an apologist or an excuse maker, it's just perspective. That's it, nothing more.

This excuse making is so bad that it's down right sad. I'm guessing the Hurricanes are the only team in AMERICA playing under the scholarship number. We just seen a team win the first National championship with a third string quarterback, being huge underdogs to the number 1 and 2 team in the country. But somehow Al Bundy with 9 potential NFL draft picks didn't have enough depth to beat Virginia and Pittsburgh from the mighty ACC Coastal division and a bad South Carolina team. The standard has been dropped so low that the "haters" have all but conceded the loses to Nebraska, Louisville and FSU. They seem to have bought into the BS that it was "ok" for us to lose to those teams for some reason. Wow how the mighty have fallen.

WELCOME TO THE U: Hurricanes Add QB Evan Shirreffs to 2015 Class
by Juan Toribio
National Signing Day was yesterday, but the NCAA allows kids to sign all the way until April 1st, and Miami has picked up a late addition.
It’s been reported for weeks that the staff was looking at quarterback Evan Shirreffs, and many knew all it would take was an offer to land the talented 6’5” kid from Georgia. Shirreffs has recently earned a three-star rating by 247sports.com and is a great addition to the 2015 that was missing a quarterback.
Shirreffs went under the radar because of injury problems throughout his high school career, but amazing accuracy and size had the Canes coaches intrigued. Offensive coordinator James Coley has a reputation of getting under-recruited guys to become pretty good quarterbacks. (Just look at the kid that’s starting for Miami right now)
The three-star quarterback won’t headline any classes, and is a depth move more than anything, but it’s still a really solid pick up by Miami, a day after National Signing Day.
Here are Evan Shirreff’s senior highlights, which show his impressive accuracy.

I've been thinking lately about some of the great in-state college football rivalries, such as Alabama-Auburn, USC-UCLA, Oregon-OSU, Georgia-GT, Michigan-Mich ST, South Carolina-Clemson, etc.
QUESTION: Is there any major college football team in the country which has a longer losing streak against its in-state rival than Miami's current record of defeats to FSU?

Posted by: Go,GoCanes! | February 06, 2015 at 06:13 AM
Al was under strict orders to shave numbers in an attempt to minimize the impact of the impending sanctions, right? Well... Not so fast.
If you recall, when Miami detailed the self imposed sanctions to the NCAA no mention was made scholarship reductions. Oddly it was only after the penalties were handed out did the school make mention of them at all.
Did the school just forget about all those scholarships they purposefully didn't fill? Is that possible? If so it would seem horribly negligent. Or Could this have been a case of revisionist history... The school trying to take advantage of the rash of players leaving the program? It seems that it may be, and I would applaud them for trying.
Before you berate me for hating, here is an article discussion the Us attempt to retroactively count the scholarship losses towards the penalty. Obviously if these losses were part of an attempt to minimize future sanctions they would've been mentioned when the School submitted to The NCAA their list of self imposed sanctions. Not after the fact.
http://www.chatsports.com/miami-hurricanes/a/Miami-Hurricanes-seek-credit-from-NCAA-for-prior-adjustments-0-8683281
If we want to discuss how scholarship numbers effected Ws/Ls we can. But it doesn't appear the losses were due to Shapiro. While I don't think the athletic department has many good decision makers residing within it, I am not ready to believe they could be so inept as to self impose sanctions only to forget to tell anyone about it.

Good damn post by Gatorhater at CIS:
"Bama's recent two time NC QB grew up a Cane fan. Most of the kids in America would want to be a Cane of the old Cane type. They do not want to be a Donna Cane. Only those who bleed the colors will put up with what Donna has created - a Big 10 cow pasture in the middle of race horse land. But again, our problem is not and never has been recruiting. If was and remains COACHING. Howard said and then proved it. Of course you need to recruit, but coaching is the key. We had some of the greatest all time college and NFL players long before Howard. The Stork may have been one of top 3 college players ever, and if I remember correctly, the entire dline of his senior year played in the NFL. Otto, OJ, Foreman, Lester Williams, Rubin Carter, and others, graced our field before a coach worthy of them showed up. Depth and coaching were the problems, and have become them again. One good coach and we are back. One good coach. In my life, I can't remember maybe one or two years where we out recruited Noles -- the girls up there have always attracted recruits more than our sunshine--- but our players and coaches use to out play and out coach the Noles. Put JJ on the sideline, and we beat the noles the last two years, and they would be crying their normal tears. It is about coaching. You have to be a horrible recruiter, like Dennis, to lose at Miami...unless you suck as a coach, like Larry, Randy and Al."
