Looking back at each signing classes under Golden, the first two were wrecked by very early departures or failures to qualify. TWENTY ONE of the fifty two players that committed in 2011 and 2012 were off the team within two seasons, and an additional three failed to qualify. The majority came from the 2012 class. It's part of the reason that our roster level was depleted.
2011:
Failed to qualify:2 (Grooms, Kinard)
Left after one year: 1
Left after two years: 4 (Grimble, Finnie, Johnson, Paul) *not counting Botts
2012:
Failed to qualify:1 (Jean-Louis)
Left after one year: 10 (Briscoe, Carter, Davis, Dewey, Dillard, Ivery, Terry, Thompson, Witt, Lockhart)
Left after two years: 4 (Blue, Dortch, Hoilett, Hope)
2013:
Failed to qualify:3 (Bond, Lockley, Griffith)
Left after one year: 2 (Olsen, Sandland)
Left after two years: 1 (Lewis)
2014:
Failed to qualify: none
Left after one year: 1 (Hester)
Correct me if I am wrong but I am counting just 72 scholarship players for the Hurricanes in their opening game against Louisville (71 recruits, one transfer). In addition, 2 of them did not play in 2014 due to injury and suspension, and a third player transferred less than two weeks later.
I knew that we were under the scholarship limit, I had no idea that we were that far under the limit. And roughly 16 were redshirted. Were we really that low in overall depth?
If you want to be competitive, you're going to have to hire a nasty coach who instantly inspires fear and respect.
Golden, Shannon, and Coker didn't strike me as intimidating whatsoever.
There's plenty of talent here to win the Coastal immediately, but everyone else has passed us coaching-wise. Even when that "Swag16" class breaks apart like diarrhea, we're still in good shape presuming we get that coach.
And it wouldn't be a bad idea to surround that coach with a couple of assistants/coordinators from the '01 squad.

Now that everyone is signed I guess its safe to expose the silly schemes we employ in games to make it impossible for the U to show our swag.. Golden is the consummate politician..shoot....I would even vote for him if he ran for office...he sure knows how to campaign and waste money... and his message is if you buy into my 5 7 record youall get your moneys worth... lol oh wait ...now that recruiting is over the new blame will be that the kids are not working hard in their summer work outs because of the negativity of the fans...lol

LSU coach Les Miles has a pretty straightforward take on in-state recruits: "If he doesn't wanna stay home, [to] hell with him."
It appears as though Miles was talking about in-state recruits in general, not a particular recruit.
To this, I say amen. That should be our attitude towards 'turn coats.'

Still no Terrell Chatman decision, but as of tonight, the Miami Hurricanes have a new quarterback
National Signing Day came a day late for one high school quarterback. But according to multiple recruiting websites, he is every bit as jubilant as the other players across the nation who pledged yesterday.
The Miami Hurricanes have offered Jefferson (Georgia) High School quarterback Evan Shirreffs a scholarship, and he has accepted, reported 247Sports and Rivals.com on Thursday night.
The news was confirmed to the Miami Herald by the University of Miami.
Shirreffs told Canesport.com that he faxed in his Letter of Intent at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
"It's definitely surreal,'' Shirreffs told Canesport. "I was not expecting it to happen. Then I got the call from coach Coley and the rest is history.''
According to the recruiting sites, Shirreffs threw for 2,784 yards and 23 touchdowns this past season, with four interceptions. He connected on 69 percent of his passes. Those are impressive numbers.
He also is a stellar student -- straight-A, according to Rivals -- and was offered from some Ivy League schools and from Eastern Michigan on Wednesday.
More from CaneSport on what Shirreffs sees for the future of UM football: "It's on the rise. They played really well last year, just had a couple of tight losses. The future is limitless. There's a lot of talent there even though some may complain about it -- the guys I met on my official visit, I watched their film and they're the real deal.''
Going into spring practice, UM has scholarship quarterbacks in starter Brad Kaaya and rising redshirt freshman Malik Rosier, who is a center fielder for the UM baseball team and will be starting the season this month. There's also reserve quarterback Gray Crow. Vincent Testaverde, the son of UM Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde, just transferred from Texas Tech.
As for wide receiver Terrell Chatman, the young man from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who has been committed to the Hurricanes but had trouble deciding between UM, Arizona State and TCU on Wednesday, he still hadn't committed anywhere as of Thursday night.

It used to be you can stay home play for the U or you can go else where and lose to us...but what do we have to attract these kids? A home team that goes 5 and 7 that is not even ranked? Surely you cant blame a kid from going else where ...a place where he competes for the ring and because of the success of the program his nfl stock value goes up? ...the only other reason it would be wise for the miami guy to come here is because after next year Goldilox is gone and we get Butch back...and if the kid red shirts then he will be in the drivers seat for another run. That would be a smart move.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | February 06, 2015 at 11:04 AM
No I don't think he sucks. But I don't think he's great either.
I think he could have done much, much better without the NCAA mess. I think he handled it on our behalf better than anyone could have by just holding this program together, while having a lesser CEO could have resulted in a complete implosion of this program.
I think we were sorely lacking talent early in his time here. I also think this team, heading into FSU we were playing the best this team had in years.
But he lost to FSU late then lost his team after that. To me that is the worst thing you can say about a coach. They dogged it in both those losses, which made him and his staff look terrible, and rightfully so.
He's getting this year to prove he can win early and down the stretch. If not he's going to get fired.
Does that answer your question?

Absolutely.

And yes I know it's tough, only one team can win the National Championship.
Posted by: J'Ville Cane | February 06, 2015 at 11:18 AM
See what I'm saying by you're confused. So who saved us from the NCAA?..."a miracle"?...or Al Golden?
"A fate we were saved from only by miracle, the NCAA's own evil, greed and ineptitude taking away any shot of making us the example they so desperately wanted us to be."
"I think he handled it on our behalf better than anyone could have by just holding this program together, while having a lesser CEO could have resulted in a complete implosion of this program."

You can believe all those things if you like that is choice. I am over all those issues as they are past.
Friend, I am about winning, that is all that matters. Though the past has had a negative impact, I am not sold on the idea we have great talent to develop. I think the talent is average, and so is the coachng. I think Duke and Perryman are good players.....but they are not among the nations elite. We have some good players and a lot of average players. Not hate just fact. The elites do not come here for many reasons within the 11 year disater and drought of UM football and the good and average are not developed any further because staff is also just average.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Signees: Ryan Fines, Richard McIntosh, Kendrick Norton, Scott Patchan
Analysis: A huge signing day addition that somewhat helped save this position was Norton, considered one of the best linemen in Florida. And certainly Fines is a talented tackle. Patchan is coming off a torn ACL so it's unclear if he'll be fully healthy with his strength back for this season, and Richard McIntosh is a player coaches at UM said was underrated. Misses here were plentiful:Joshua Alabi (UM made a late run), Kevin Scott, Austrian Robinson, Kevin Scott, Rasheem Green, Shelton Johnson, Arden Key and Russell Ude (the latter two were always a longshot). That's a lot of misses of top talent at a key position of need for the Canes. And UM invested a lot of time in California trying to land Scott and Green that simply did not pay off.
GRADE: B
LINEBACKER
Signees: Jamie Gordinier, James King, Charles Perry
Analysis: The Canes are very high on Perry, who is already on campus learning plays, and UM coaches also think Gordinier can have an immediate role. King was a reach, picking UM over FAU, and he's got good speed but has to be considered a major project. A big miss here was Claude George, a JUCO player who UM wanted to enroll early but picked Texas A&M instead. UM also went hard after John Houston out in Cali but never really had a shot. UM also was in the final two for Mohamed Barry but lost out on that one.
GRADE: B-
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Signees: Michael Jackson, Jaquan Johnson, Robert Knowles, Sheldrick Redwine
Analysis: Johnson has a chance to play a big role as a freshman, as he's a tremendous talent, and Jackson is somewhat underrated as a big, physical corner. Knowles is a hard hitter who was a late bloomer and has to be considered a solid addition to this class. Redwine was late to get a UM offer and has a lot of work to do if he's going to make an early impact. A big miss here was Marcus Lewis, who was leaning toward Miami a few weeks ago. Miami also invested a lot of time trying to sway Booker T. cornerback DaVante Davis but were unable to move him from his Texas pledge.
GRADE: B+

I think the NCAA is a small part of a larger problem; I alluded to this yesterday. Anytime you are scrutinized by these Nazi/Commies it is a stigma, a mark, a cloud if you will. Others have been; we have been on their radar for a long time; part of that is our own fault as we had some bad moments we allowed to happen. Part of that is the witch hunter Nazis and insider schools (OSU PSU ND Michigan...FSU) hating we upset the apple cart and won 5 NCs as the upstarts new guy.
Face it; FSU was protected, so was Auburn...pretty boy Cams pearly whites have always uttered lies....Famous Jamemis has too. Cheaters liars frauds!!!!!
The NCAA gunned for us, and came up short. It was a problem among problems but UM football died on the field at the Fiesta Bowl with KD11 on his knees after we fell apart. Cry about the call if you want....it wont the reason and you know I know it. Not robbery, fatal meltdown by coach and team.
not it started by allowing good kids loyal to a coach talk you into having a good coach and good man take over the HC reigns he was not qualified to hold.
That was where the present began.....in the past. I am currently working on a novel called A UM Carol.....with ghosts of past present and future starring LOL....you get the point...these seeds were sown with Clappy, RS, AlPa and all the things that have happened that have been so bad.....not just one specific.
The problem now is how do you stop the downward spiral into obscurity?
Simple: Hire Me!!!!!

I think Coker was the right hire at that time. If She hired Alvarez, which has been alleged, who's to say that He wouldn't have shaken up that great staff that we had in place. Face it, that team that Coker took over was a turnkey operation.

Jville,
I have no folders or books to read from; its all upstairs compiled from 36 years of winning via fundamentals, aggression, player development, staying on top of what is happening in football, and being that Machiavellian coach that players both love and fear. We will practice Sunday as there is a heatwave and no football to watch.....just those damn hardboards....we do fundamentals for 2 hours.....got to stay on top....thats where we all want to be.....its a habit for us here.....Winning a Daily ritual....try it some time....its awesome!!!!!!!

If the Pats can overcome the negative onslaught of bad publicity and systematic attacks then we should be able to overcome the hate from the press and the terrible calls in our football and basketball games...
The hate has always been a motivation for us to practice harder and play better in the games... you overcome the hate by winning..lol...and its sweet when you walk out of the opponents field and you have silenced the crowd. We should stop hating on haters and use the hate to be the best... hate has fueled the Cane dominance for 25 years ...lol

CR,
it might have been a good interim hire, with that understanding.....I dont know.....Clappy and RS are good men...I like clappy much more than "grumpy ass I hate everybody" Onionhead but both good men and good coaches for their side of the ball....not HC's at all. AlPa is also a good man but not really a good coach of any kind at this level; he is a small school.....MAC at best....Div 2 or 3 really.....I just do not like his idea of football.....it is not Championship football at the elite level....not even close.
Posted by: VA Cane | February 06, 2015 at 12:11 PM
CR you are dead on about that.....start the engine and let it rip.....but he lost control at Fiasco Bowl....too much power and ego surfaced and he was not the man to correct the machine.....and so the epic fall from grace began....

Posted by: j.w. | February 06, 2015 at 12:23 PM
Last year I saw us rise to a level of speed and dominance that was reminiscent of the old days..it was in the VT game...I saw it with my own eyes...but that game plan was a result of the pressure that was put on Golden to play more man ,push up field and blitz more guys. But that is really not the scheme that Golden is comfortable with so ...i suppose there was a lot of guys being called in the film room for free lancing..lol
Because of that game I am not ready to say that we do not have good players who can compete on a top ten level. But i think there is conflict in the coaching staff and the former U players and coaching staff about the difference in philosophy that is like a cancer. And in my opinion that is from lack of good leadership that employs losing schemes that dishearten the players. We can play on another level of speed.

Very good point Miamicane. We looked good vs VT.....and they were very average like us.
I think abut that Final 4 Bama OSU Oregon...FSU who whipped us....no we cannot play there. Baylor TCU....not ready. We have some good players so initially we might hold up.....but no leadership coaching or player.....absolutely no depth.....no good game plan, no adjustments, no game management....it gets away quick....an embarrassment in the making.
