Let's look at the total number of 4/5 star players on the roster post Signing Day 2015. University of Miami 4*/5* players on the roster, season record:
2006: 46 (7-6)
2007: 42 (5-7)
2008: 42 (7-6)
2009: 41 (9-3)
2010: 39 (7-6)
2011: 28 (6-6)
2012: 21 (7-5)
2013: 22 (9-3)
2014: 25 (6-7)
2015: 28
Miami loses three (2 to early departure, 1 to graduation) and replaces them with 6, including the transfer of 5-star player Gerald Willis. A stronger class could have really boosted Miami's overall talent quotient, as it was an unusually low number of 4/5 star players leaving this year (due to the low ranked 2011 class). After the conclusion of the 2016 season we could see as many as 6 depart, meaning the 2016 class will have to have at least that many players just to keep even.

We'll see how many actually end up drafted and on a team. Regardless, everyone agrees this was not a 7 loss team.
But we were also forced to start true freshman on the o-line and QB, and have multiple true freshmen in the d-line rotation. I also seriously doubt there was any Top 25 caliber team starting last year's third string running back at safety this year.
This team had top end talent for sure, but it also had a serious lack of depth at several positions.

Nobody claimed that U were intentionally trying to be a jerk. But a select few on here seem that repeating the same negative crap every day, all day is necessary, but in reality it gets tiring to read and it is not helping the cause.
And U don't think I feel the pain too? Mama ain't happy, I ain't happy, nobody is happy.
I have LIVED it everty single stinkin day since this blog started the first year during Coker's demise and the hiring of Shannon all the way through Golden's tenure. I have been through blog wars, The JSQ, and many other things since comitting to this blog.
U think that has been all wine and roses?
Trust me I know pain. I feel your pain.
It is just that I choose to compartmentalize the football season into 12-14 weeks of games that matter (not counting NSD, Spring scrimmages and Fall practice) and not to wallow in the mire for the rest of the year.
It is like everything in life: it comes down to choices. I CHOOSE not to be upset, depressed or sad about the season once it is over. I get angry after losses as much or even more than anyone else, but I get over it by venting, putting it in a box, throwing the box away and then moving on.
Ever season starts anew each September with every team at 0-0. That is what I think about because I choose too. U could choose that too but U seem happy being angry all the time because you "got hurt".
Dude, U know I like your contributions here on the blog, but here is a news flash: life is FULL of hurt. Somehow U gotta find a way to get past it or it will, in the words of Don Henley, "Eat U up inside".

National Signing Day is supposed to be a happy occasion, full of pomp and circumstance and unsubstantiated hope. There was none of that for Al Golden Wednesday. No booster parties. No chicken wing eating fests. No parades.
National Signing Day was more a moment of closure for Golden and Miami football than it was a new beginning. The losses on the trail, compounded by the losses in November and December on the field, were too massive. They drowned out the feel good stories of this recruiting cycle, like Booker T. Washington's super running back Mark Walton ignoring all the negativity and noise around him and showing a sense of loyalty to his hometown school that probably hasn't been seen since the man whom he wants to erase from the Miami record books went through this same process.
Like Walton, Duke Johnson announced very early that he wanted to be a Miami Hurricane and never wavered. There were no hat games. There were no phantom commits, where Miami coaches were told for months that he was coming and then got left at the altar in embarrassing fashion down the stretch. There were no street agents turning dealings messy. There was just a commitment in the style that our forefathers created the word, a word used ridiculously loosely in the cesspool that college recruiting has allowed itself to become.
So Walton didn't get the parade and party that he deserved Wednesday. Too many of his fellow class of elite prospects around town thumbed their noses at Golden and The U. They got caught up in all the hate being directed at the coach and his staff. So instead of playing down the street at Sun Life Stadium, they will be displaying their talents in places like Auburn and Tuscaloosa and Columbus and Austin.
That continued failure in local recruiting was not a reason to throw any parties. It was a reason to go home and become reacquainted with the family and thank God that it all is over and spring practice begins in three weeks.
Walton, an immensely talented running back, will be part of any solution. And make no mistake. With all of this talent around South Florida, Miami remains positioned as well as any school in the country to bounce back quickly.
Look at USC, in a similar situation out in Los Angeles. The Trojans got their act together this year and walked off with the National Team Recruiting Title, sprinting to the wire past Alabama and Florida State who were having insane recruiting years themselves.
That's the kind of talent acquisition Miami is capable of doing, should be doing. Golden is just blowing it all right now with a stubbornness and series of mistakes that there was no way he was going to overcome. The town has turned on him because of his mismanagement of the end of the season. The Miami fan base has not been this toxic in a long time. Maybe ever. Golden has allowed it to get so bad that he might never recover from it.
All those local kids that went the other way again this year? People must remember that these guys were practically in diapers the last time Miami was relevant in college football. They don't relate to Michael Irvin and the great Sean Taylor and Ed Reed, Reggie Wayne and Santana and Clinton, Willis, Edge and Frank.
If they all stayed together it might get that ridiculous again in Coral Gables. But all they hear is that Mark D'Onofrio's defense sucks and that the defensive backs coach is too incompetent and arrogant and that the fan base doesn't support the program. They see 6-7, players quitting on the coaches. They see underachieving talents like Stacy Coley and Herb Waters and Tracy Howard. They hear opposing coaches racking up frequent flyer miles to exploit this weakness who taunt Golden with Twitter posts mocking that lost fence around the state of Miami. The street agents swarm in and get their pound of flesh.
So Calvin Ridley, the best receiver in the country, goes to Alabama. And lanky corners like Carlton Davis and DaVante Davis go to Auburn and Texas. And Tim Irvin, Michael's nephew, goes to Auburn. And National Signing Day becomes a relief because the misery is over.
That's probably not fair to kids like Robert Knowles from Miami Edison or James King from Booker T or Sheldrick Redwine from Miami Killian. They were the backup plans, the beneficiaries of all those top-ranked guys bolting town. They will go to The U with chips on their shoulders because they were going to FIU, FAU and Louisville before Golden offered the opportunity to stay home. They deserved signing day to mean more down here. They will try to become more than just dead weight on a bad roster.
But still you could see the joy in the eyes of their moms. These families don't want their babies going off to these college towns in other states. Miami has a recruiting advantage that is immeasurable. The ones that got away just got caught up in all the negativity. And that was Golden's own fault.
It was not his fault that he came to Miami with absolutely no reason to understand what it would take to be successful here. He had a 300-page plan. He knew what the talent base was like. I remember seeing him bouncing around with joy one day with his coaches over the kind of recruiting that they were going to be able to do at The U.
Debate "The Cloud" all you want, and I will agree that it became an overused excuse. But it did have some effect. That was not Golden's fault.
You might even have the heart to also give him a pass for his missteps last year, when he stood in Orlando and his problems were smacking him in the face after that debacle against Louisville like he was in the ring with Floyd Mayweather. He chose then, at a very critical moment in his Miami tenure, to remain loyal to everyone working under him while everyone else saw the need for some massive reform. He wanted to give his men another shot to get everything right without the negativity of the NCAA situation hanging over the program.
So that blew up on him too, because nothing got better. Everything got worse. The on-field results went down the tubes. The local recruiting problems compounded.
Golden had another shot to save himself in December, to save The U from what is becoming yet another rebuild. He needed to emerge from the rubble of those three losses to end the regular season and present the public with a plan for how he was going to make it better. He needed to create a new chemistry within the program and bring some fresh ideas and new personalities into the building.
All around him, other schools got better. Auburn assembled a super staff and assaulted South Florida and other regions. Florida quickly improved itself and surged in the final days of recruiting from 94th to 23rd in the team rankings. North Carolina got better. Clemson raised its game. You can go on and on.
Golden stood there and took punches. It was not the Ali Rope-A-Dope. There was no furious rally.
There only was a lot of despair, and Golden is in trouble now, coaching under an immense pressure that will be almost impossible to overcome. You don't get many chances in this cruel business. Just ask Randy Shannon and Larry Coker.
So the Miami that came into the 2015 recruiting cycle with a problem in local recruiting exited it with the perception of a worse problem. Golden has dealt with it by attacking 2016 with a vengeance and he already has 13 of those "commitments" to show for it.
But they are not going to stick for the next 12 months if Golden continues to bury his head in the sand without finding ways to make things better than what they are.
The program, the way it is composed now, is simply not good enough. Forget the on-field issues for a moment. Golden does not have enough elite recruiters, the reason why Miami isn't winning the battles. His best is the offensive coordinator, and James Coley can't be his lead recruiting guy - that requires too much year-round time. Coley has to focus on practice plans and game plans for the better part of the year. Golden needs two or three more guys who can still win in recruiting when the air thickens. Tim "Ice" Harris, the former head coach at Booker T. Washington, is not going to solve those problems himself. Two of the three elite prospects at that school this year got away just to prove it.
You can't say that another recruiting class was blown on Wednesday, because that just would not be fair to the kids on the list. And there are some good players there.
Walton is a very good running back. There are six offensive linemen in the class who are in the mold of the kind of kids Art Kehoe has had success with in the past. Jerome Washington is a big tight end. Lawrence Cager is a lanky receiver with potential. Kendrick Norton should excel as a lineman on either side of the ball.
But 2015 was a unique opportunity to load up because of the depth of talent in South Florida. And next year looks very similar.
Golden is not holding up his end of the bargain to an administration standing behind him and taking bullets as well. Average recruiting classes can hamper programs for years if they compound. And Golden, through his inaction, allowed this one to become average. Miami finished 26th in the Rivals team recruiting rankings.
That's why the Hurricanes had no choice but to find closure in National Signing Day on Wednesday. The U will not be heard from again now until September. Golden woke up Thursday able to take a deep breath and find six months to get his act together for one final run at winning back support and keeping his job.
If there remains any doubt in his mind about whether things are good enough right now, all Golden has to do is reflect on the recruitments of Marcus Lewis, a defensive back from the Washington D.C. area, and Jordan Scarlett, a running back from St. Thomas Aquinas High.
Lewis was hot on Miami for months, appeared headed to Coral Gables. But things went sour at the end when the relationships between recruits and the men who have been kissing their butts for 12 months matter most. It looked like Miami might lose Lewis to Kentucky. And then Florida State swooped in the last few days and got him to commit without even official visiting. Lewis' emotional tie to Miami was not strong enough.
Scarlett was committed for six months. Rumors that he would go to FSU or Florida began to surface back in November. Scarlett toyed with Golden and staff, kept insisting he would be a Hurricane. Then he decommitted three days before signing day and signed with Florida.
The bond was not strong enough.
"I don't know how you recruit any harder than we do locally," Golden said Wednesday as he tried to put a happy face on the situation.
But things don't just get better in this crazy business of college football, really any business. To be successful, you have to address problems and fix them.
That was the failure that Al Golden took into Wednesday's National Signing Day and the failure that he toted away from the fray.
His problems got worse......

This shows how Als philosophy does not ring in the ears or change the hearts of the traditional Miami player or fan. And we are witnessing the unraveling of his tenure here. There is 25 years of history where the Canes dominated which means that we already have coaches and players of the past who can reignite the passion by bringing back the philosophy that got us the 5 rings. Its just a matter of time until we see this resurgence.

The biggest obstacle to a top recruiting class this season was the 6-7 record. Two more wins against Pitt and Virginia at the end of the season, and the canes would have done much better. That said, the Canes got some good players who will produce. As far as the Florida recruits are concerned, the Canes got a lot of really good 3 star players that are comparable or better than the 4 stars who got away.
The biggest obstacle to successful recruiting next year will be the Canes record. 9 or 10 wins and all will be forgotten and the Canes will be considered on the upswing and 11 rookies who are former Canes in the NFL, Florida recruits will line up to go to the U. The U still has a draw down here for local recruits when they are winning.
It's really up to Golden and his coaches to win and they have the talent to do it. I am pretty sure we will see a few adjustments this season. Even stubborn coaches understand that when you have more draft picks than wins, somethings must change. Golden will be coaching for his job and he understands that. Some coaches don't have the talent to win 10 games, but Golden does. All he has to do is make some adjustments and get his players and coaches to buy in to these changes

He belongs at a mid-tier program where everyone would be happy with 7-8 wins, that's his ceiling.
No way can you expect a coach whose record is .500 after 9 years of coaching and expect him to become a champion all of a sudden.

Good article Tony Cane, but you left off two of my favorite recruits- Jaquan Johnson and Norton. Of course my favorite quote for NSD is by JJ Watt who puts it all in perspective: "Annual reminder that it's not all about how many stars you have or how many cameras show up at your signing. It's what you do next."
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | February 05, 2015 at 10:16 AM
Everybody loves a good underdog story... I'm not sure JJ Watt was ever an underdog!
Unfortunately in today's game stars matter. Of the last 5 national champions, the worst 4 year recruiting class average belonged to ohio state, with 5.8.
If it's national relevance we want, 23 just isn't good enough.

Looking at some generic 2016 numbers, we'll be able to sign up to around 31-32 kids next year, barring any late additions for this year.
22 kids in 2015 - 5 early enrollees = 17
25 - 17 = 8 early enrollees we can have next year
25 + 8(ee) = 32 (max) kids signed in 2016
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 05, 2015 at 01:15 PM
Look, I get trying to be positive but...
State it as that and ONLY that! If you want to think positive about next year and be optimistic, cool. But don't try to use facts for being optimistic because there are NONE! So just say things like, "I hope we have a great season next year" or "I believe we'll be better next year". I'll respect that! But don't come up with comical theories to make the staff look better or post irrelevant ish about other teams from twitter, you'll look delusional. Like saying the cloud hurt is the last 2yrs. Did the cloud keep us from competing for a National Title? Yes. Did it keep us from winning the ACC Coastal? HELL to da NAH!
Thanks!

me, I think golden should have been fired. he wasn't, lets move on and support the U. and to the person that said the nancies are not trying to be dicks and are really hurting. please stop! u guys are been dicks. not only that, u r affecting recruiting.
Posted by: AfriCane | February 05, 2015 at 12:42 PM
No, that really doesn't affect recruiting. No matter what names you want to call fans, UM has established that the fans have little influence on anything, and recruits know that as well as anyone.
The funny part is everyone still will support UM, regardless of what they say or do. But blind support at this point in time is not going to happen for this current staff, there's just too much under the bridge to even expect it.
