During the always exciting and extremely hopeful opening night of any Miami Hurricanes baseball season the positive vibe around here this time was provided by CaneSince1982. Here was his opening call as the game began:
"Its baseball time, opening night, The U against Rutgers. Andrew Suarez on the mound for the Canes after turning down a 2nd round draft pick by the Washington Nationals for just under a cool million dollars."
His call was perfect, his timing was excellent and his execution was flawless.
As the game ended, it went down something like this:
Top 9: 5-2 CANES
Pitching change for the Canes, Closer Bryan Garcia is in
1st Batter: Ground out to 3rd
2nd Batter: Single to right
3rd Batter: Double play 4-6-3
CANES WIN! CANES WIN! CANES WIN!
Double header tomorrow against Rutgers at Mark Light Field.
Game times are 2pm and 7pm.
And with that said, CaneSince1982 said it all!
Hard ball always my fav participation sport.

CaneSince1982,
Hats off to you sir. Fine work, much appreciated. 86, we need play by play on baseball. I agree its bad for football, what we need to do is a drive summary. I'm loving that it's baseball season because my Padres signed a lot of great players. I'm going to try to go to a game in SD this year. Padres coming for the NL west.

### Looks like new UM receivers coach Kevin Beard will be a real asset in recruiting. Beard said he will focus a lot of his efforts in Broward County, where the Canes need the help. UM had more players from New Jersey (two) than Broward (one) in this year's recruiting class.
St. Thomas Aquinas' Sam Bruce, a UM oral commitment who's rated the No. 4 receiver in the 2016 class, told 247sports.com that he was very pleased UM hired Beard: "I loved it. I'm very excited not only for me as an incoming player but also for him. He's been a great mentor ever since my eighth grade year [at University School].
"Ever since I met him he's been nothing but real to me. Coach Beard is a phenomenal coach and person. I'm just going to wait until I take a couple of visits and see a couple of schools and hopefully after the season I'll be able to make my decision."
Bruce said he ranks UM first, UF second and Oregon third.

If Beard saves Bruce, he earned his paycheck. Then again, it's kind of on him for losing Scarlett. That's his boy.

Golden's biggest obstacle to recruiting this 2015 cycle was UM's 6-7 record in his 4th season. Golden's biggest asset during the 2016 cycle will be the number of NFL draft picks in 2015 and UM's record of 9 or more wins. A winning season will minimize the effects of negative recruiting and decommitments. I like Golden, but I don't think he will survive another mediocre season. Golden needs to win and his best players must play at a high level. With a new president in place before the end of the football season, This year is a make it or break it season for Al Golden.

Besides winning, it is alos important how those wins and losses came about. No more blowouts in front of a national TV audiance and embarrassing home losses to bad teams when plenty of recruits are in the stadium is vital to keep the 2016 class together.

Is Rutgers any good at baseball?
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 14, 2015 at 12:50 PM
Looks like Suarez had a rough night, 5 innings pitched and 8 hits given up. He needs to pitch better for Miami's season and his draft status.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 14, 2015 at 12:56 PM
With my Padres looking like a competitor, I'm going all in on baseball. Miami made football suck, so let's go baseball.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 14, 2015 at 12:57 PM
If my numbers are right, Suarez has a 3.60 ERA and a WHIP of 2. Ouch. Only 3 strikeouts also. Good win, but Miami needs more from its Ace.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 14, 2015 at 01:04 PM
Dude,
After listening to post game interviews and reading the Herald. Suarez says he couldn't locate anything and that his fast ball was moving but it was coming back over the plate instead of staying on the corners. Pretty much said that he didn't have his stuff and just battled all night. Coach Morris said he thinks it was pretty much Suarez over trying and trying to be perfect.
The good news is our bullpen was lights out at Jim Morris promised. We had a lot of base runners but much like last year we struggled to get hits with runners in scoring position. Im not reading much into that as it was the first game and was extremely cold for Miami natives. If that trend continues through out the next 3 games of this series it will be a concern heading into playing UF next weekend.
Canes bats did wakeup once we got to Rutgers bullpen so it also could be that Rutgers starting pitcher was just hot last night. He did have 9 strikeouts in 6 innings.

Great points. Hopefully Suarez can get his stuff under control the rest of the season. He needs to anchor the rotation and shut down the lineups come playoffs. I wish every pro sport made players go to college. The sports would be saturated with talent.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 14, 2015 at 01:19 PM
^^^ and hopefully the strikeouts go away from Miami's lineup. No reason to panic of course.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 14, 2015 at 01:21 PM
We got to clean up our base running in games that can and will come back to bite our Canes!
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | February 14, 2015 at 01:44 PM
First game, no need to panic, but I'd rather look sharp and prepared for game 1.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 14, 2015 at 01:52 PM
T-Sully,
Only base running errors I saw were from the true freshman Carl Chester. Supposedly the fastest guy on the team. Hell get it down.
Posted by: Cane Since 1982 | February 14, 2015 at 01:58 PM
Ok who in the hell gave a female with a british accent that sounds like she has no clue out about baseball a microphone to call the game.

Go Canes, BigWindy
Do you get the feeling that Al is an obsessive winner?
I don't, to me he's Larry Coker with more focus on strength and conditioning.
