Sheldon "Tex" McClellan scored 21 points and Tonye "Big Man" Jekiri finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds as Miami shook off a slow start to easily beat Virginia Tech 76-52 on Wednesday night.
Angel "Little Man" Rodriguez added 11 points for the Hurricanes (17-9, 7-6 Atlantic Coast Conference), who used a 17-4 run to open up what was a three-point game at halftime and kept steadily adding to the lead.
Things got a bit heated in the second half, with both Miami coach Jim Larranaga and Hokies coach Buzz Williams earning technical fouls after arguing calls.
When Williams got his technical, not much changed.
When Larranaga got his, everything changed in a hurry.
After Virginia Tech scored six straight - coinciding with when Larranaga got his technical, then removed his jacket and implored the crowd to get louder by waving his arms, as did McClellan - the Hurricanes put the game away.
McClellan made a 3-pointer from the corner near the Miami bench, Rodriguez added a layup and before long the Hurricanes had put together a 18-5 run to take a 64-41 lead with 6:26 left.
* The Hurricanes won their second ACC game in a row, which ties their largest ACC win streak this season. This is the third time this season the Hurricanes have won two ACC games in a row.
* Miami opened the game with Tonye Jekiri, Sheldon McClellan, James Palmer, Davon Reed, and Angel Rodriguez on the floor. This is the second time this season the Canes have started a game with this starting five. The Hurricanes used this starting lineup in their last game at Boston College.
* The Hurricanes first field goal came at the 17:57 mark of the first half thanks to a layup from red-shirt junior Sheldon McClellan.
* Miami took its first lead at the 9:29 mark of the first half thanks to an and-one layup by Reed.
* The first half saw three lead changes and one tie. The Hurricanes led the last 21:24 of the game and the entire second half.
* The Hurricanes closed out the remaining 12:32 of the first half on a 22-13 run to take the lead 29-26 into halftime.
* The Hurricanes out-rebounded the Hokies 40-19. The Hurricanes are now 9-1 this season when they out-rebound their opponents.
* The Hurricanes also outscored the Hokies 34-14 in the paint.
* The Hurricanes opened the second half with a 17-4 run to open up a 16-point lead with 14:03 to go in the game.
* Miami’s largest lead of the game was 28 points with 3:41 remaining in the second half.
* The Hurricanes scored 75+ for the 10th time this season. The Canes are now 8-1 when scoring 75+ points
* With the win over Virginia Tech, Miami now leads the all-time series to 15-12.
* The Hurricanes improve their home record against the Hokies to 8-4.

The 24 hour ban is lifted. New rules:
1. No hate for anything Canes.
2. No toxicity between bloggers.
3. The blog is supposed to be FUN, not misery.
4. Get it? Got it? GOOD!
5. That or be gone, I am so done with that.

OK, you're the boss.
Some notes, though.
1. Can we agree that statements like "I don't like Al Golden" can be labeled "hate", calling him names must be labeled hate, but saying "I don't like Al Golden's half-time adjustments (or lack thereof)" is a legitimate opinion on a sports blog?
2. Should go without saying, but well ... there are trolls out there and those who feed them ...
3. Following UM sports is supposed to be fun, not misery, as well. So when the results are frustrating, the blog is inevitably going to reflect that.
However, we as fans should be able to get over a loss in the span of 4-5 days. Otherwise, you should consider getting a life.
(There are exceptions, of cause. If the NC title game ends with a horrible interference call, the anger is justified even decades after it happened.)
4. and 5.
If 86, SOUP and the CEO come to the same conclusion, it's carved in stone.

Really hope it stops and Canes football can be discussed.

Didn't see this posted yesterday. Good article that seems to verify there was some dissention among the players last year. Getting that fixed is on the coaches, but I like how guys like Kaaya and Thomas are taking it upon themselves to do it too.

Negative reinforcement has been proven countless times to be the worst possible way to lead or manage any enterpise.
Posted by: Go Canes | February 17, 2015 at 07:27 PM
The above statement is something a management consultant might tell you, but I'm not so sure a psychologist would agree.
Negative and positive reinforcement are likely the most misunderstood of concepts in psychology, at least by lay people. It is commonly believed that the prefix (positive/negative) refers to a type of stimuli being presented to affect a change in behavior. Positive reinforcement being something pleasant and negative reinforcement being something, well.... Unpleasant, or negative. This is not the case. In fact, positive refers to the addition of a stimuli to reinforce behavior. Conversely, negative reinforcement refers to the removal of a stimuli to alter behavior. An example: You present your employees with a goal... They must sell X dollars by Thursday afternoon. If that goal is met, they will not have to work Friday. This is negative reinforcement, as a stimuli is removed to effect a change. The change being increased productivity.
Whether negative or positive reinforcement is used is not as important as how consistently the change of behavior is enforced. Older research I believe told us that praise was a far more powerful motivator than money. Newer research is telling us that individual differences determine what motivators will be successful. The example we were discussing... Rallying the troops around Goldens Job, is I think more convoluted than just positive/negative reinforcement. Using the loss/maintenance of interpersonal relationships as a stimuli will get to the intrinsic nature of ones motivations, as opposed to the extrinsic... performance for a physical reward. A behavioral psychologist would be able to expound on this... how emotions like guilt can be powerful motivators. Or even shame. Or fear of loss of the relationship, which can feel like a death. If the Pleasure Principle is a real thing, which I believe it is, there no deeper a pain to avoid than the loss of a close relationship.
My undergraduate degree was in experimental psychology, but the research i assisted dealt with eyewitness memory recall in children and not motivation. My doctoral program was clinical (PsyD), but that was 20 years ago. My current career was definitely not my first career.
Oh and by the way... I carry a Kel-Tec 380 and love it. If you're a looking for a daily carrier, I highly recommend one. A 9 is great, but I just find it too cumbersome to wear.

Mike Rumph's comments says it all on where our football program is. Things need to change!!! The only thing I have with this team is HOPE!!!!!

Bill Belichick:
While giving the keynote address at a sports medicine seminar in Boston last week, Belichick explained how he builds championship teams, and his take on the oldest cliché in sports illustrated how he looks at things differently.
"People say all the time there's no 'I' in team,'' Belichick said, according to The Boston Herald. "That's true. But there's an 'I' in win. Within a team, strong individual performance determines whether or not we win. You can stand around all day and hold hands in the locker room chanting 'Team, team, team.' That's not going to do anything.
"Individual performance is critical to winning. Individual toughness is critical to winning. Every member of our team is a shareholder. Are they all exactly equal? Of course not.''

Norm Parker:
"One other thing, don't force your kids to get along and play nice. Don't expect everyone to like each other. That isn't important. Some are big, some little, some fast, some slow - that's life. The thing is to look past the person and see the one thing that matters - the single common denominator - TOUGHNESS."
"Each player should ask of another, "Do you respect his toughness"? This attitude or swagger is one that resonates, "If you're not tough enough, you're not one of us" that quickly weeds out non-performers and continually raises the expectations of the unit."
"If the offensive players were any good, they'd be playing defense with us"

I HOPE our basketball team sneaks into the tournament. They're a team that a higher seed team doesn't want to play!
I still think we have a very good basketball team. The whole month of February, Rodriguez, has been down right awful, which as hindered this team. I really think it might be time to bench him, and start Lecomte.
Glad to see Jakiri and Reed ballin......they've been the most consistent so far. Sheldon has been good, but inconsistent! I'm excited for next year's team.......We should be scary good!!!

That Dragic deal's not bad, that kid can ball. Wouldn't mind getting Gerald Green out that deal either, something I read that was being proposed yesterday.

He does get a lot of easy baskets (Dunks, Layups) which helps his FG%.....His shooting and defense has been inconsistent, from my take from watching all the games. I like him a lot and still a solid player to have!!!!
