Another National Signing Day (NSD) is just around the corner and just like the opening ceremony at the Olympic Games every few years you never know quite what to expect. However, we can be almost certain that head games, hat games, misdirection plays, double switches and some dirty dealing and double crossing are definitely on the agenda.
The only thing that is clear is that at some designated time in the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 4, 2015 the NCAA will declare NSD open for business at college campuses all around the Nation with what basically amounts to a loud proclamation of: "Let the Games begin!"
Fax machines will begin to whir as they spring to life with what is the life blood of any college football team: A National Letter of Intent (NOI) from high school seniors and JUCO players across the Country.
Both coaches and fans alike will alternately cheer and curse as the news of who signs where comes out in rapid-fire succession as each NOI is received and formally approved by the compliance departments at each school. Spontaneous celebrations of joy will break out and a few cell phones will probably be smashed in mad desperation about the one that got away.
To follow the fast-paced action, of course you can tune into Canespace as our recruiting gurus will be on hand all day to report each official "Welcome to The U!" as it is announced.
Havent seen anyone talk about the Kendrick Norton commitment

I am a glass half full kind of guy. Can't ignore all the misses for talented South Florida kids, but must also say that the Canes have a solid top 25 class and some really good recruits. Norton, JJ, St. Louis and Walton were great pulls and they have some undervalued prospects that will surprise people.
The Canes have theCanes#1 recruiting class for 2016. Now it's up to Golden to get some wins in 2015 if he wants to keep that swag class in tact and also keep his job.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | February 04, 2015 at 03:56 PM
It's just not good enough. Al isnt a good enough tactician to win with that level of talent. He needs to have talent so superior that they simply overwhelm the opposition.
I love every single player that signed today. And am thrilled they'll be wearing the U. Al just needs more if his lack of coaching chops is going to be camouflaged.

Do you guys seriously think that Al's 2016 class will hold together? Come on. If we get a new head coach, maybe.
1. This team just lost its best offensive (Johnson) and defensive players (Perryman). Add in Dorsett, Flowers, Gunter, Walford, and Feliciano. Do you seriously think this team is going to be better with losing that much talent?
Kaaya is awesome, but he can't compete with that talent loss and the worst coaching staff in America. He isn't Superman.
2. Nebraska, at FSU, Va. Tech, Clemson, at Duke, at NC, Ga. Tech. That doesn't even factor in at Pittsburgh, at Cincinnati, and at Virginia. Do you really believe that with a less talented team and with greatly improved opponents (especially in the ACC Coastal), that we're topping 6-6?
3. The fanbase hates Al, and with each game in 2015... they'll hate him more. Let's be real: he's on the chopping block. Donna Shalala will also be gone in a few months (thank God).
4. How many people ran from Al this year? At least 15 high schoolers got sane and went elsewhere, and oodles more didn't even give him the time of day. He sent out hundreds of offers. It looks weak and pathetic. That's going to hurt getting South Florida talent.
5. They are high school kids. The $EC is pushing, and we all know how F$U does. High school kids are as reliable as Al's defense.
There's a whole crapload of other reasons, but you get it. If you think that this 2016 class is going to stick with Al in charge... you're insane.
Posted by: LB | February 04, 2015 at 05:49 PM
Oh, and get ready for another round of excuses once the poop storm hits:
1. We're too young (because we're younger than last year).
2. We lost Duke Johnson and have no running game.
3. We lost Flowers and Feliciano and have no pass protection.
4. We lost Gunter, Perryman, and Chickillo... and that's why our defense sucks.
5. Night games.
6. The cloud.
7. The fans.
8. Resources.
9. Players not buying in.
10. Assistant coaches (save D'Onofrio) not buying in... even though none were fired.
11. Opponents out-executed.
12. Penalties from a frustrated team.
13. The 2016 class is what will save us.
14. Poor conditioning that UTough is supposed to fix.
15. Poor tackling he's supposed to teach.
16. Suspensions.
17. Transfers...
...and on and on.

Listening to Golden's press conference, and it seems like I picked above:
- Directly referenced the cloud.
- Directly referenced the youth.
- Directly referenced losing Duke Johnson.
- Indirectly referenced suspensions.
- Indirectly referenced transfers.
- Indirectly referenced the resources.
- Directly referenced the sucky defense.
- Indirectly referenced the pass protection.
- Directly referenced conditioning.
Not at all challenged by the media. Blake and Donna seemed to have picked them from scratch.

Nobody bothered to ask him whether the whole staff was coming back intact?
Posted by: dj moonbat | February 04, 2015 at 06:31 PM
Djmoon...
...not even close.
The closest thing to a real question was when Gary Furman (or Ferman) asked him about the difficulty of evaluations. Then Al responded multiple times with:
"...you're splitting hairs."
Posted by: LB | February 04, 2015 at 06:35 PM
He also talked a lot about players getting bigger (i.e.: slower).
Posted by: LB | February 04, 2015 at 06:37 PM
He mentioned the 2016 class at least five times (I lost count), and also listed off players who didn't play yet.
Basically pleading with everyone to keep him around, but Donna and Blake made sure he was preaching to the choir.
Chosen reporters. And if I had to put money down, the questions were probably screened by the UM administration.
Posted by: LB | February 04, 2015 at 06:40 PM
So Al's radioactive in South Florida
Posted by: Old Skool | February 04, 2015 at 06:40 PM
It's toxic and lethal. They may as well make the spring game closed to fans and media, so at least they move the camera on the field and still avoid the signs and banners from the sky.
Woof.
Posted by: LB | February 04, 2015 at 06:44 PM
Al probably won't be seen in person again until the Spring Game, so that will give the fans time to calm down and more time for him to plead his case to stay to the next administration regardless of record.

Can you imagine a school (any school) who claims to be competing for conference titles to:
1. Keep a coach with a losing record in his fourth year.
2. Keep a coach who refused to fire any assistants the losing record and consecutive bowl losses.
3. Finished dead last in the easiest division in major college football.
4. Went 0-13 vs. a postseason top 25 teams.
5. Never thrown a shutout.

Listening to His interviews drives me crazy. Nobody asks any decent questions and god forbid anybody asks a follow up.
I did hear him explain why there weren't more local kids in the class.... Because we need O lineman, and it wasn't a deep O line class locally. Lol.

Saw Norton play in the high school game at the end of the season in Boca Raton. He played both ways and was very athletic. He even carried the ball as a fullback. I loved his swag and had a good ffeeling about him coming to Miami (perhaps wishful thinking). The Canes have some players on D. Despite scheme, I think the D will be very good in 2015 if they can avoid critical injuries. I think their defense will attack more and they have some players that can make plays. If Bush stays healthy, he is the leader and all ACC. DL is deep. JJ is the best safety from South Florida, and I would take Knowles over Irvin any day. We are deep and experienced at CB. LBs started to play better with Hurley. Not only will they have a top 10 defense, I expect them to be near the top in critical defensive stats like turnovers and 3rd down efficiency. A good defense can carry the Canes to a coastal division championship.
