Miami’s offense compiled its most explosive output in over a decade, and the Hurricanes completed a four-game sweep of visiting Rutgers with a resounding 25-4 victory in the series finale Sunday.
Miami (4-0) scored its most runs since May 2, 2003, when the Hurricanes beat Pace 27-1 at Mark Light Field. The resounding win capped off the Hurricanes’ first four-game sweep since they beat Savannah State in four straight – also in 2003.
“It was a great game for us" said UM head coach Jim Morris. "We played well – in particular, we swung the bat [well]. Sometimes there were a few weeks where we didn’t score 25 runs combined these last few years. I think the [new] ball makes a difference, but I think our guys are stronger too.”
Twelve different Hurricanes recorded hits, eight players recorded multi-RBI games, and the hosts pounded out a 12-run fourth inning to jump out to an 18-4 advantage. Sporting a more-than-comfortable lead by the middle innings, Miami tacked on four runs in the sixth, two more in the seventh and added a solo home run from freshman Malik Rosier in the eighth to surpass the 20-run mark for the first time since 2009.
Junior David Thompson connected on Miami’s first home run of the season, a three-run blast in the game-turning fourth when the Hurricanes sent 16 batters to the plate. Thompson recorded all four of his RBI in the inning, having added a sacrifice fly in his first at bat of the frame.
“It felt good to get the first home run of the season. I got a good pitch to hit and put a pretty good swing on it,” Thompson said. “But our whole lineup, everyone swung the bat well today. [The sweep] was a great way to start off our season.”
Eusebio opened the game’s scoring in the second, cracking a bases-clearing double off Rutgers starter Gaby Rosa (0-1) to give Miami a 3-0 lead. The hosts tagged Rosa for seven runs (five earned), chasing him after just 3.0 innings.
“There were two outs, and I was trying to get a good pitch and put a good swing on the ball,” Eusebio said of the hit. “After that, things took off. It’s contagious.” Morris called the hit the “biggest” of the day, after Miami had nearly squandered a prime opportunity with runners in scoring position.
Making his first start of the season, sophomore left-hander Danny Garcia allowed three hits and three earned runs in 3.0 innings of work. Miami’s bullpen allowed just four hits the rest of the way, as senior Daniel Briggi and freshman Andy Honiotes made the first career appearances.
But the story Sunday was Miami’s offense, which came up with 21 hits against the Scarlet Knights (0-4). Garrett Kennedy, who finished with three doubles, was one of seven Hurricanes to connect for at least one extra-base hit.
Rosier recorded his first career hit on a two-RBI single in the sixth, while freshman Peter Crocitto added his first career hit on a single in the eighth. Junior George Iskenderian finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs, while slugger Zack Collins went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
1 for the first time in a long time. Nice baseball weekend.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are the athletic teams that represent Rutgers University. In sports, Rutgers is chiefly known for being the "Birthplace of College Football," hosting the first ever intercollegiate football game on 6 November 1869 in which Rutgers defeated a team from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) with a score of 6 runs to 4.[1][2]
Among the first American schools to participate in intercollegiate athletics, Rutgers currently fields 27 teams in the Big Ten Conference which participates in Division I competition, as sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the following sports: baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, swimming and diving, wrestling, and volleyball.[3]
The athletic programs compete under the name Scarlet Knights, after the Rutgers University mascot which was chosen in 1955 by the student body.[2]
Posted by: SOUP | February 16, 2015 at 08:09 AM
In its early days, Rutgers athletes were known informally as "The Scarlet" in reference to the school color, or as "Queensmen" in reference to the institution's first name, Queen's College.[2] In 1925, the mascot was changed to Chanticleer, a fighting rooster from the medieval fable Reynard the Fox (Le Roman de Renart) which was used by Geoffrey Chaucer's in the Canterbury Tales.[2] At the time, the student humour magazine at Rutgers was called Chanticleer, and one of its early arts editors, Ozzie Nelson (later of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet fame) was quarterback of the Rutgers team from 1924 to 1926.[15] The Chanticleer mascot was unveiled at a football game against Lafayette College, in which Lafayette was also introducing a new mascot, a leopard.[15]
However, the choice of Chanticleer as a mascot was often the subject of ridicule because of its association with "being chicken."[16] In 1955, the mascot was changed to the Scarlet Knight after a campus-wide election, beating out other contenders such as "Queensmen", the "Scarlet", the "Red Lions", the "Redmen" and the "Flying Dutchmen."[2][17] Earlier proposed nicknames included "Pioneers" and "Cannoneers".
When Harvey Harman, then coach of the football team, was asked why he supported changing the Rutgers mascot, he was quoted as saying, "You can call it the Chanticleer, you can call it a fighting cock, you can call it any damn thing you want, but everybody knows it's a chicken."[18]
Harman later is said to have bought the first "Scarlet Knight" mascot costume for the 1955 season, which was to be his final season as football coach at Rutgers.[19]

Who will challenge Chris Johnson’s combine-record 4.24-second 40-yard dash?
“Three wide receivers have a different gear,” Mayock said. They are:
Phillip Dorsett, Miami, 5-10, 183. “The first time I put in tape of him, all I could think of was Mike Wallace running around the Senior Bowl,” Mayock said. “He was under the radar until people saw him run. I asked him his goal for the combine, and he said, ‘4.3 or better.’ You know, 4.3, 4.28 is world-class speed.”

"But I do think Miami coaches do a good job of preparing kids for the NFL. Most who have the talent are NFL ready.”
"So perhaps with this UM staff, the greater issue is schemes and strategy and how players are used, more so than if they’re being developed."

Kevin Beard prepared to teach a new generation of 'Canes
Former UM, Plantation star Kevin Beard ready for opportunity of a lifetime as 'Canes newest coach

I guess this is what Jim Morris was talking about when He said "the new ball makes a difference":
JACKSON, Miss. -- Tim Corbin sounded more like a philosopher than Vanderbilt's coach as he talked about the new flat-seam baseball designed to bring a little more scoring back to the college game.
Finally, he hopes, after decades of tweaks and trying to figure out the correct balance between offense and pitching, the sport might have found a solution that sticks.
"Through the generations of the game, it's been so up and down," said Corbin, who led the Commodores to their first national championship in 2014. "We've always wanted to find that medium where there's some harmony between offense and defense. I don't know if we've ever been exposed to that."
The change on the baseball is relatively subtle: The seams have been lowered so it's more like the one used at the professional level. Researchers found that the flat-seam ball could travel as much as 20 feet farther in the air than the previous raised-seam ball.
On the practice field, coaches and players are seeing the same results. Almost all expect at least a modest boost in offense.
Real results will be available soon: The college season starts on Friday and pretty much everyone is suggesting fans get the gloves ready in the bleachers.
"I think you're going to see a significant jump in offensive numbers across the board, not just in homers," UCLA coach John Savage said. "The ball is definitely more lively. Fly balls that used to hang up in the air and get caught are now falling for doubles. You're really going to have to have speed on defense."
University of San Francisco coach Nino Giarratano said the change was a win for everyone.
"The ball itself is going to have a good impact on the game," he said. "Maybe we'll get a little further carry out of the ball, which will make the game more exciting."
College baseball, which has used metal bats since 1974, was long known for mammoth homers and crooked numbers on the scoreboard -- a game in which even a 5-foot-9, 165-pound middle infielder could easily get a ball out of the park.
That all changed in 2011, when new standards for the bats drastically reduced all kinds of offense. The effects were most pronounced during the College World Series at spacious TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska. Only three homers were hit during both the 2013 and 2014 tournaments, which matched the lowest total since 1966 when wood bats were used.
The lack of offense the past four years has been widely criticized, especially by coaches. At one point, UC Irvine coach Mike Gillespie called the bat change a "nightmare." TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle was also blunt: "It's just a travesty what we've done to college baseball."
After much clamoring for another change, the new baseball was seen as a compromise.
Not surprisingly, college hitters are pleased.
"The ball definitely jumps off the bat a little more if you square it up," Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson said. "The game has definitely been dominated by pitching the last few years. This might help make it a little more even."
Said Saint Mary's College third baseman Anthony Villa: "We seem to have a little more pop. The flat-seam baseballs feel good off the bat and throwing them across the diamond. They still roll true. I think it's a good change."
College pitchers also say there are reasons to be excited about the switch. Vanderbilt's Walker Buehler and UCLA's James Kaprielian -- who are both considered high-level prospects for June's Major League Baseball amateur draft -- don't expect to have many issues.
Kaprielian says it's clear that the new baseball will travel farther, but he feels any change that helps mimic conditions at the professional level is a good thing.
"Personally, I like it," Kaprielian said. "I think pitchers who throw tight breaking balls and throw through the glove are still going to be very successful. There shouldn't be too much of a drop-off."
Buehler agreed: "If you're a guy who needed the high seams to get some spin on the ball, than it might be a problem. But for guys with power stuff -- two-seam fastballs, cutters and sliders -- I think it could be beneficial."
Savage said he hopes the main beneficiary will be college baseball as a whole.
"The (low-scoring) era has treated us pretty well -- we've been to the College World Series three of the last five years," Savage said. "But for the bigger picture and for the interest in the game, I think it's going to have a significant difference."

I think we have guys going to the NFL, but my point is we are not producing stars like the past. The NFL is the best of the best, and at one time we led the way. Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Russell Maryland, Reggie Wayne, AJ, Greg Olsen, ST26, Clinton Portis, Shock, Bubba Franks, McKinney, Bernie Jim Kelly.....on and on....I do not see that level of talent going there because we are not getting the elite players as UM is no longer the destination for the elites. Since 2003 we are Despair and Stagnation, not hope and change to coin a phrase!!
This is not AlPa....it is the last 3 coaches Clapster Onion and Alpa. None of them have brought in the truly elite stars to play CFB here; they go elsewhere. Thus we have guys playing in the League but not the stars; the stars HS kids are starring at elite schools and going to the Big League. A lot from state of FL....but no longer UM. They do not come here.
R Wayne, AJ Gore are in the late stages of career. Graham not a bad player, had average year. Calais Campbell not bad, but the guys named are average...Ford has 34 catches in 2 years...not bad. Henderson started and did decent job, Vernon improved, Miller Mike James have done ok. Ray Ray just like college...average They are good as they are in the NFL. Point is that they are not among the elite of the NFL; at one time all UM players were among the elite. Name them one at a time and you will see what I mean.
GoPa you need a remedial reading course; anybody says anything you get your defense lawyer mode on about your AlPa. All 3 guys have players in the league; my point is that they are just average guys because those 3 cats were unable to recruit, develop and produce top talent....therefore the talent from their teams is merely average or learns from better coaches in the NFL.
you could have been on OJs lawyer team....dont get so defensive as nobody...at least not me...is giving your AlPa any grief....all 3 guys have not got top talent...thats also on the AD and others who help run the show. Read....and learn some football instead of always thinking everybody is blaming your AlPa...I am not.
Said sincerely and fairly!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | February 16, 2015 at 10:32 AM
Ultimately, I follow 1 team in the pros, so while I like seeing our guys there, it is not my big concern.
I want UM to win at the highest level; numerous titles....where they go after that and who they play for in the pros is not my concern.....I wish them all the best. I want to get the elites back to UM so we start winning....this mediocrity is not any acceptable form of winning. winning is being #1 and competing for #1 every year.
There is only one team I know doing that...my guys!!!! Wonder why? Fundamentals combined with skills, dynamic schemes, super aggressive, coached and developed to win as a team, coachable intelligent players who listen and learn....and a coach the loves and cares for his guys for who they are.
15 degrees here, about 10 with mild wind. gonna get cold tonight. My kids are off from school......wanted to know if we were going to throw it around a little today....talk about loyalty and dedication....i told them not in this we will have warmer days!

I assure you my reading and comprehension levels dwarf yours VA. But that's another story for another time.
We had three guys drafted last year after very successful careers here. A fourth player, undrafted, went on to have a great rookie year in Jacksonville. All four proved they should have gone higher.
We are now going to have 5 guys drafted on day one in this year's draft, four of which may go in the top 2 rounds.
That's player development. I could care less who the coach is, the facts speak for themselves.

Yes that may be another story GoPa. You prove you can dream as well.
However your knowledge of football is like the Dodo....extinct. I can tell by your comments and sources that you have never played a down in your life, never coached or developed players....or won a game as a player or coach....it shows.
AlPa has sent some guys to the NFL. ..like Clapster and Onion....and they have done ok....got to be respectable players or would not be there. Point is UM and those 3 coaches have not recruited elite players so there are not elite players going to the league as in the past from UM. Hopefully things get better and we get elite kids here so that we start to put elite players into the league.
I understand GoPa.....you can't help it that you don't know anything about football....it shows badly.
