Junior David Thompson strengthened his case for ACC Player of the Year Friday night at Mark Light Field, connecting for three home runs and nine RBI in a 22-1 thumping of Georgia Tech.
The three-homer game was the first for a Hurricane since June 2010 (Scott Lawson), while the nine RBI were the most since Chad Rupp had nine in April 1993.
Thompson now leads the nation with 77 RBI and leads the ACC with 18 home runs.
Thompson connected on two-run home runs in the first and fifth innings and added a grand slam in the eighth, bringing his ACC-leading total to a whopping 18 - the most for a Hurricane since Harold Martinez hit 21 in 2010.
"I'm on cloud nine right now," Thompson said after the game. "It was a lot of fun out there. It's fun to come up to bat with guys on base like that, everytime I was up to bat today. I was putting some good swings on the ball."
The grand slam was his third of the season.
"I think I swung at better pitches tonight than yesterday, that's why I was so successful," said Thompson, who went 0-for-3 Thursday. "I was taking strikes that weren't my pitch, and swinging at balls that I could hit well."
Just one night after Thomas Woodrey's complete-game performance guided the Hurricanes to their 10th straight victory, Thompson and the offense stole the show.
Miami outhit the Yellow Jackets 21-4, and the Hurricanes (41-13, 21-8 ACC) captured their ninth home series victory in the last 10 tries.
The victory extended Miami's season-long winning streak to 11 games in front of 2,499 at Mark Light Field.
Miami, who mustered just five hits in a 3-0 series-opening win Thursday, scored four runs in the first and six more in the third, jumping out to an early 11-0 lead and chasing lefthander Ben Parr (5-4) after just one inning.
Not to be overshadowed on Senior Day, lefthander Andrew Suarez (7-1) tossed 6.0 strong innings for the Hurricanes.
"It was a wild one to watch, but it was great," head coach Jim Morris said. "Suarez threw very well, and of course David Thompson was the show tonight with three home runs. We had a lot of guys swing the bat well."
Are U kidding me?!? After all these years, finally...!

WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson were suspended seven games each Friday for their domestic violence arrest last month - the league's longest ban in its 19-year history.
WNBA President Laurel Richie said the league "takes all acts of violence extremely seriously" in handing down a suspension that represents nearly one-fifth of the 34-game regular season. Richie called the players' actions "unacceptable."
Griner plays for the defending champion Phoenix Mercury and Johnson for the Tulsa Shock. The players got married last week in Phoenix and their teams open camp Sunday. The league season begins June 5.
The players were arrested April 22 on suspicion of assault after they fought in a home they recently bought.
The league spent the last few weeks investigating. The WNBA said Johnson pushed Griner in the shoulder and she responded by pushing her in the back of the neck. The confrontation escalated to include wrestling, punches, and the throwing and swinging of objects. The 6-foot-8 Griner received a bite wound on her finger and scratches on her wrist; the 6-4 Johnson received a scratch above her lip and was diagnosed with a concussion.

The Work: Spring HS Scrimmages Day One
This afternoon I attended the South Florida High School scrimmages at FIU, an event put on by NFL Senior Director of officiating Al Riveron. There were 5-6 games going on at all times so it is possible that I missed some kids worthy of being talked about, but here are my observations from the event. More content will be coming over the next couple days. Deerfield Beach, Miramar, Southridge, Killian, Monarch, and others will be there tomorrow morning for Day 2.
Columbus
**I came away very, very impressed from what I saw out of Columbus, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
**2016 Miami commit Josh Uche is first of all a very good kid. I will have a full interview up with him over the next few days, but Columbus defensive coordinator Alex Trujillo was absolutely raving to me about the kid’s work ethic and attitude. I caught the same vibe when I spoke with him afterwards.
**Uche has gained 18 pounds in the last couple of months and he is at 6-2, 217 right now. He has the frame to hold a lot more weight and his father is about 6-5 so it is highly possible that he continues to grow.
**2016 CB Trajan Bandy is small, but can really cover and is a ball of explosiveness. He has a lot of interest in Miami, but he’s just not what they are looking for. Ideal nickel corner.
**2017 CB Marlin Brooks is one to watch. He is the son of former Cane Nate Brooks so the bloodlines are strong.
**2018 CB Joshua Jobe might have been the most physically impressive player on the field. He is a freshman, but I was told he is older than his class so I don’t think he will be able to play all four years. Jobe is already 6-1 and flies. Columbus DC Alex Trujillo told me that he compares to a young Deon Bush. He is still learning the nuances of the position, but Miami is already on him hard and he is big on the Canes. Full story coming with him.
**2016 LB Bryce Handy was laying the wood all afternoon. He is the son of Darren Handy, who played center at Miami in the 80s. Handy has good size at about 6-1, 220 and plays downhill. Will be a good get for a mid-level BCS program.
**This next name will get some people very excited and/or very upset if you are a Miami fan. 2017 LB Guy Thomas, who is the younger brother of Booker T. Washington legend and current FSU linebacker Matthew Thomas, is just a freak. “Wow” was the first word that came to mind when I saw him lining up with his hand in the ground because he is already about 6-4 and has not even scratched the surface of his ability. Him and Uche should form an incredible tandem off the edge.
**Offensively, I am a fan of 2017 QB Alex Ros. He gives the Explorers a running dimension from that spot and throws a nice spiral.

Worth a repost:
There Golden goes with his bs...the players either didnt qualify, transferred due to playing time, were arrested or booted for breaking team rules...I cant remember a SINGLE signee leave because of the NCAA.
Tell us kids are sticking around because you recruited better, that your staff took less chances, tell us kids are sticking around because they believe in what you're building...but please dont try to keep the NCAA excuse alive. Just when I think Golden was turning the corner on his BS train he tries to sell us on some more.
Posted by: UMike | May 15, 2015 at 12:24 PM
The truth might be more nuanced.
The NCAA impact (hitting August 2011) could - and should - have been a crippling blow to Miami's 2012 recruiting class. It's possible that in order to salvage the class in the absolute worst part of the scandal, that we were not as picky that year as we were afterwards.
Of the 33 commitments that year, 10 were gone by the end of their first year and another 5 were gone by the end of their second year. Only 2 were four star players, the rest were three star players.
If you look at how long the players lasted from each class, you will see a positive trend:
2008 Class: 32 recruits, 10 gone after 2 years
2009 Class: 19 recruits, 03 gone after 2 years
2010 Class: 29 recruits, 13 gone after 2 years
2011 Class: 19 recruits, 10 gone after 2 years
2012 Class: 33 recruits, 15 gone after 2 years
2013 Class: 19 recruits, 06 gone after 2 years
And the 2014 class, with 1 player transferring so far.
As far as I know, the NCAA mess was never cited as a reason for leaving. I would guess that it may have been a factor for some.

Go Canes...I appreciate you trying to take up for your boy Golden one more time even on a new blog and trying to get this debate going again...good job....and Tony..good stats as always, I appreciate the work you put in...but none of what you posted makes what Golden said any less bs. Your info would of opened the door for Golden to be truthful and say they reached a lot in 2012 due to the NCAA bombshell, but he choose to go the BS "blame NCAA on everyting" route lol
No one can name a single player that TRANSFERRED or was BOOTED from the team because of the NCAA mess. I am positive we lost players during recuiting due to the NCAA, that cannot be denied...but AFTER players signed the NCAA had zero to do with those losses. They were kicked off the team for rules violations or arrests. One or two were simply homesick (Hester) and others didnt not quality due to grades or test scores. I think we had another 1-2 "retire" to injury, but not 100% on that. And maybe another couple that were happy with scheme and/or playing time.
We have not lost a single player AFTER they signed and were enrolled due to the NCAA. I would have zero issue if Golden said they took to many chances in one class cause they came in late the NCAA bomb dropped, but to try and blame the NCAA for the attrition in bs.
If anyone can find a single player that transferred or was kicked of the team due to the NCAA "cloud" Id be happy to hear it.

Name ONE player Go Canes...name ONE player that transferred or got the boot because of the NCAA "cloud".....I will wait.
Posted by: UMike | May 16, 2015 at 07:11 PM
Every player, or just about every player, that has left the program in the time frame being discussed either gave a reason, the reason was reported by the media or the reason was obvious (rape).
So I will go ahead and take those players words about why they left. Actually it wouldnt make any sense to leave and NOT blame the NCAA mess if it were really the case. What player would transfer because the the NCAA "cloud" and then blame playing time, scheme, home sick etc? That would be pretty dumb.
Like I said, no doubt we lost players due to the NCAA mess in recuiting...not a SINGLE player has been documented as leaving the program after signed because of it.
Even if the number of players that left from that first class was high because of reaches, they still didnt leave because of the NCAA, that would mean coaches took chances on bad character kids because of it of the NCAA.
At this point you're arguring just for the sake of aruging, but since you're labeled a homer it will conveiently be overlooked by management.
Posted by: UMike | May 16, 2015 at 07:18 PM
Bottom line, at this point it does not matter. Everything will be settled by facts on the ground this season. Miami will either be back this season or not. Either way, we will be having a totally different discussion.
Posted by: TonyCane | May 16, 2015 at 07:28 PM
Tony...I 100% agree with you. And I had nothing to say about past players transferring until Golden gave that bs excuse.
But you are right, it does not matter now. We have the talent now to win as we did last year...hope we put it together. Id much rather talk about a Canes beat down or big games as a ranked team etc

I mean who cares what Golden was trying to say with that statement. What difference will it make in the end?
Most of what comes out of the mouths of ALL college football coaches when speaking to the media is either spin, BS, or giving them just a little and holding back a lot. As a rule, they're paranoid, worried about giving too much pertinent information, or just covering their asses, or holding back, as I already mentioned.
It's obsessive almost to the point of ridiculousness to parse every quote. The coaches and players either will, or they won't excel this coming season. Rather than nitpicking every single out of context quote, I'm support the players, the team, and pray for the best. That's what I'm going to do.
Posted by: Lurker | May 16, 2015 at 09:27 PM
Just because a kid doesn't say "Hey I'm leaving because of the NCAA investigation", doesn't mean the uncertainty, the negativity, not playing in a bowl, not winning, not knowing what the future holds didn't factor in their decision.
Some things are not as black and white as you are trying to make them.
Just my opinion.

What may have been missed with FSU having been swept by Clemson this weekend on the diamond is that the Noles ended the season tied with NDU in the ACC as a result, meaning FSU dropped a seed to #4 in the ACC and will be in the pool with #1 Louisville instead of in UM (#2)'s bracket. The brackets go with 1-4-5-8 vs. 9 winner and 2-3-6-7vs.10 winner.
This means UM will get NDU, NC State, UVa vs. G Tech winner in pool B.
FSU will have to deal with Louisville and Clemson, the team that just swept them, in their bracket, along with UNC vs. V Tech in their play-in game.
The play-in games are on Tues (first game at 11, and second shortly after) to begin the ACC tnmt, and the action takes place at the Durham Bulls athletic park.
Bottom line is that the U is looking like they're beginning to peak at the right time, hopefully not too soon, and maybe not so much for FSU, although it's a whole new season starting this week.

It's a characteristic I see all over the Internet, social media, etc. People not just here, this place is relatively stable by comparison, but an attack dog mentality.
I think it bothers some people on here because I express a strong opinion different from their own.
