Of course he made sense. He knows the defense he wants. Whether he gets that defense to perform, or can implement what he wants, that's another question.

Even when criticizing, it's important to make sense. From strategic standpoint he said nothing wrong.

Go Canes

The guy has had to play a lot of players converted from other positions.

Dallas, Rogers and even Highsmith at times.

What he said made perfect sense.

Bring in guys who know how to play safety.

Da U N Houston

He made sense, and agreed with the 4.7 comment. You will rarely find a highschool jr running 4.5, specially at Safety. I think the point D'No was making is he rather take a kid who played safety his whole career who it's easier to project than a "athlete" who's never played it.

Example - DB2 has great instincts as a Safety, and he's a 4.6 guy as a College Jr.

I understand Hurlie as well, that speed kills, but we are not good at developing athletes to new positions.

The elf against the wall needs to stay there. How can anyone whatch that and not see this dude is a clown.

The Dude

Funny how Mark criticizes safeties for backing up but will play 5 safeties on the goal line. I can't wait until this schmuck is out of Coral Gables. How does he even have a job right now?

Ed Reed ran a 4.57 at the NFL Combine. That's after years of strength training and preparing through college. He probably ran a 4.7 or 4.8 as a Junior in HS

trianglecane

*can*

trianglecane

Taylor Mays ran a 4.43
Kam Chanceller ran a 4.6

Pretty sure you can't find examples to go both ways.

Just saying he has a foot to stand on.

"They're projecting"

The only person in that room that was projecting, was Hurlie.

Can't believe these bozos made a video to try to show Hurlie in a bad light.

Seattle ain't playin' with no 4.78s, or low 4.8s in their backfield.

They're also not playing with HS Juniors. They're projecting him from his current age to college.

NEWSFLASH!...Seattle has Earl Thomas...that's a 4.4 buddy!

My thing is, how does a kid know how to read run or pass...play the deep ball...or cover...based on instincts?

And wouldn't instincts
suggest "freelancing"?...something that's a big no no in this defense...

Nobody has the money to build the kind of stadium UM needs, instead of the typical cheesy MLS stadium with concrete bench seats for the fans, and no luxury suites.

TBC:

If they take care of business and win the ACC tnmt, I don't see any way they don't make the top 8 and end up in line for a superregional hosting (which means nothing if you don't keep winning, of course). We all know that odds are always a hair better at the Light though. Winning the ACC tnmt. can't happen at the Light, so winning sends the message. However, what if FSU somehow wins the tnmt and had won the regular season series vs. the U, while Louisville could potentially still finish with a higher ranking and a series win vs. the U? How many teams from the ACC could potentially get the nods? Just win, baby, to remember Al Davis.....

thirstybuzzardcane

Nice to see Miami #1 in the RPI. Their strength of schedule is #3 in the country. I would be shocked/pissed if their not one of the top 8 teams.

This is just so sick:

#1 seed Louisville goes down to Clemson in pool A. Clemson had lost their opener already to FSU, so both now have one loss. FSU is playing vs. UNC right now.

Pool B for the U has NDU playing UVa tomorrow, with the loser generally being eliminated, although not in true terms as it's not a double elim. tnmt. However, the loser would have 2 wins and no real shot at winning the pool. A UVa win, given their loss to UM already, combined with a Canes win vs. NC State tomorrow night (one can only hope all goes according to plan) generally all but guarantees the U a spot in the ACC champ. game. A loss by the U tomorrow night would be pretty tough to overcome though, as a best case scenario gets them a tie with NC State, and a tiebreaker situation likely doesn't end up in their favor given head to head (three way ties have different variables though). Go Canes!

Top 5 ACC Quarterbacks for 2015

High School (2014): West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade
247Sports Composite: Four-Star (0.9356), No. 7 Pro-Style QB

Kaaya is one of two players on this list who outperformed expectations last season as a true freshman. He won the starting job in fall camp and never relinquished it, showing continuous improvement throughout the year. In 13 games, he completed 58.5 percent of his passes for 3,198 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Of the 11 ACC quarterbacks with at least 9 starts and 15 pass attempts per game, Kaaya led the conference in both yards per attempt (8.5) and pass efficiency (145.9). Given his age, Kaaya’s development is nowhere near complete and he’ll look to take another step forward in 2015. Unfortunately, he’ll have to do so without the services of many of his favorite targets from last season, including receiver Phillip Dorsett, tight end Clive Walford and even running back Duke Johnson, the school’s all-time leading rusher. With Johnson gone, Kaaya is now the centerpiece of the Miami offense, so the team’s success – and possibly head coach Al Golden’s job – will be largely dependent on Kaaya’s level of play.

99.98% of Chinese restaurants are just comfort food, much the same everywhere. Great for when The old lady doesn't want to cook, and you want to do pick up, or delivery, and the family likes the orange chicken or the moo goo gai pan or the sweet-and-sour whatever. Most are just average, but a bad one is really really bad and usually gross.

imo, best in Miami is Tropical Chinese. Excellent dim sum, not cheap like most average Chinese joints, but not super expensive either. Where else can you get good dim sum in South Florida

Next up, Fri. nt. at 7pm vs. NC State. First, NDU plays NC State tomorrow, and then NDU plays UVa Fri. a.m. These next few games should clarify the stakes that much further, although clearly simply winning 3 in a row covers all purposes to get to the ACC championship game.

FWIW, in pool A play, Louisville was down 4-0 to UNC before mounting a nice comeback and taking a 7-4 win. Also, FSU took down Clemson after getting swept by Clemson last weekend.

Amazing, truly, 8th inning today by the U after a lackluster offensive performance prior. Thompson with the clutch 2 run single, and then Kennedy nailing the 3 run shot right after. Simply wow. Negatives for the game: the U got a few hits in the 8th, but only had 7 for the game after an amazing dozen games leading up to today. It took a few UVa errors to help fully though, with the Cavs committing 3, including one in the 8th that helped set things up. Pos: The U never gave up, took advantage of what they had to, got the win vs. a team they struggled against this season, and got the away and ACC tnmt jitters out of the way in game 1 with a win.

The Dude

No offense to all the ladies out there that read this blog, but you gals have some strange logic sometimes.

Me: It will be late (11:00 pm our time). Are we supposed to stay up for you? I don't think you should go. (She's a month pregnant by the way.)
Wife: Its not like I want to go.
Me: Then tell her I didn't want you to go. Blame me if you want to.
Wife: I can't believe you have a problem with me going.

Hold up, you didn't want to go, I didn't want you to go, I gave you a perfectly reasonable excuse to get out of it (which I was cool looking a little like an ass) yet I'm the bad guy here? See ladies, see how you get our heads spinning? Lol.

With UM abaout to start ACC champoinmship play tonight, here's a little preview of how we did against round-robin opponents:

Wed, May 20 Virginia Durham, N.C. 3:00 p.m.
UM lost series @Virginia, 2-1 (Fri, Apr 17 - Sun, Apr 19, Results 4-5 / 2-5 / 8-6)

Fri, May 22 NC State Durham, N.C. 7:00 p.m.
UM swept series @home, 3-0 (Fri, Mar 13 - Sun, Mar 15, Results 3-2 10inn. / 9-2 / 6-0)

Sat, May 23 Notre Dame Durham, N.C. 3:00 p.m.
Not on our schedule

While we are the overwhelming favourite to win against #7 seed Virginia tonight, the Cavaliers are one of the few opponents that took a series from us in ACC play (the others being Louisville and FSU, who both play in the other pool).

#6 NC State gave us all kinds of problems in Game 1, where we were outhit 8-3 through 9 innings before a 3-hit 10th inning gave us the 3-2 win. In the other two games, the Canes dominated from start to finish.

#3 ND wasn't on our schedule, so it's going to be interesting how this plays out. ND swept FSU Apr 11 (double header) & Apr 12, but has gone a mediocre 11-9 since.

Barry:

It isn’t necessarily easy for coaches to change their approach, especially two as headstrong as the defensive coordinators of the Dolphins (Kevin Coyle) and Hurricanes (Mark D’Onofrio).

But players said some change is afloat with how both of them operate. The question is how much will it help.

In Coyle’s case, coach Joe Philbin asked him to “simplify” the defense.

“What happened is we had too many personnel packages, too many combinations,” Philbin said. “You want to take advantage of the strengths of your personnel. Sometimes it's hard to get the preparation down and get these guys confident in all their assignments.

"We have to shrink our personnel packages and we have to get better at our core defense. We have to have some things to hang our hat on. We have to do a better job coaching. We have to do a better job of demanding it. We're simplifying personnel wise and condensing our packages a bit."

Players have embraced the change, although those who play less as a result will not be so thrilled.

Safety Reshad Jones said it is “definitely” a smart new approach.

“It will be a lot simpler," Jones said last week. "We have a lot of Pro Bowl guys that can make plays on our defense. That's the key; make it a lot simpler for guys to just run to make plays.”

As safety Michael Thomas said: “Coach Coyle is trying to make it where we're just going out there and playing fast.”

In UM’s case, defensive end Ufomba Kamalu said D’Onofrio made some tweaks to create “more of an aggressive defense” and that the defensive ends are being “asked to get in the backfield sooner” and “just have to worry about your gap now” instead of the two-gap approach that UM has played a lot in the past.

The two-gap requires defensive linemen to line up head up against an offensive lineman and assume responsibility for the gaps on either side.

The parent of a prominent UM player said “speaking to the players, they say the defensive scheme will change [some]. You’ll see a lot more pressure that what we’ve been seeing.”

It's expected UM will continue to play both the 4-3 and the 3-4.

Without discussing specific strategic adjustments, D’Onofrio said: “We wanted to focus the group on making more progress toward the quarterback. We want to keep collapsing the pocket, keep making progress toward the quarterback.”

He said new defensive line coach Randy Melvin has done a good job conveying that new emphasis, as well as the technique needed to execute it.

But whether D’Onofrio makes any fundamental schematic changes in his defensive backfield remains to be seen; some critics believe that’s needed.

D’Onofrio has said in the past that perceptions of his defensive approach aren’t necessarily true, that UM plays more man defense with its cornerbacks than many perceive. Two players privately have said they wish D'Onofrio played more man defense.

Al Golden has strongly disputed the notion that UM at times plays its safeties too deep, though video evidence from the Georgia Tech game suggests otherwise.

Golden has said publicly several times this offseason that there will be changes in UM's approach. Coconut Creek receiver Binjimen Victor told Canesport.com recently that "they are going to change the way they do things,... but didn't say how."

Anything that better capitalizes on the pass-rushing skills of UM's talented group of defensive ends is a good start. But regardless of what Coyle and D'Onofrio change about their approach, the onus ultimately falls on the players to execute it.

The Dude
