Junior David Thompson strengthened his case for ACC Player of the Year Friday night at Mark Light Field, connecting for three home runs and nine RBI in a 22-1 thumping of Georgia Tech.
The three-homer game was the first for a Hurricane since June 2010 (Scott Lawson), while the nine RBI were the most since Chad Rupp had nine in April 1993.
Thompson now leads the nation with 77 RBI and leads the ACC with 18 home runs.
Thompson connected on two-run home runs in the first and fifth innings and added a grand slam in the eighth, bringing his ACC-leading total to a whopping 18 - the most for a Hurricane since Harold Martinez hit 21 in 2010.
"I'm on cloud nine right now," Thompson said after the game. "It was a lot of fun out there. It's fun to come up to bat with guys on base like that, everytime I was up to bat today. I was putting some good swings on the ball."
The grand slam was his third of the season.
"I think I swung at better pitches tonight than yesterday, that's why I was so successful," said Thompson, who went 0-for-3 Thursday. "I was taking strikes that weren't my pitch, and swinging at balls that I could hit well."
Just one night after Thomas Woodrey's complete-game performance guided the Hurricanes to their 10th straight victory, Thompson and the offense stole the show.
Miami outhit the Yellow Jackets 21-4, and the Hurricanes (41-13, 21-8 ACC) captured their ninth home series victory in the last 10 tries.
The victory extended Miami's season-long winning streak to 11 games in front of 2,499 at Mark Light Field.
Miami, who mustered just five hits in a 3-0 series-opening win Thursday, scored four runs in the first and six more in the third, jumping out to an early 11-0 lead and chasing lefthander Ben Parr (5-4) after just one inning.
Not to be overshadowed on Senior Day, lefthander Andrew Suarez (7-1) tossed 6.0 strong innings for the Hurricanes.
"It was a wild one to watch, but it was great," head coach Jim Morris said. "Suarez threw very well, and of course David Thompson was the show tonight with three home runs. We had a lot of guys swing the bat well."
I meant wangs, now you got me thinking about spareribs

NC State takes down NDU in their opener in pool B, 3-0 on a 3 hitter. This makes UM-NC State especially huge.

#1 seed Louisville goes down to Clemson in pool A. Clemson had lost their opener already to FSU, so both now have one loss. FSU is playing vs. UNC right now.
Pool B for the U has NDU playing UVa tomorrow, with the loser generally being eliminated, although not in true terms as it's not a double elim. tnmt. However, the loser would have 2 wins and no real shot at winning the pool. A UVa win, given their loss to UM already, combined with a Canes win vs. NC State tomorrow night (one can only hope all goes according to plan) generally all but guarantees the U a spot in the ACC champ. game. A loss by the U tomorrow night would be pretty tough to overcome though, as a best case scenario gets them a tie with NC State, and a tiebreaker situation likely doesn't end up in their favor given head to head (three way ties have different variables though). Go Canes!

Nice to see Miami #1 in the RPI. Their strength of schedule is #3 in the country. I would be shocked/pissed if their not one of the top 8 teams.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | May 21, 2015 at 09:49 PM
TBC:
If they take care of business and win the ACC tnmt, I don't see any way they don't make the top 8 and end up in line for a superregional hosting (which means nothing if you don't keep winning, of course). We all know that odds are always a hair better at the Light though. Winning the ACC tnmt. can't happen at the Light, so winning sends the message. However, what if FSU somehow wins the tnmt and had won the regular season series vs. the U, while Louisville could potentially still finish with a higher ranking and a series win vs. the U? How many teams from the ACC could potentially get the nods? Just win, baby, to remember Al Davis.....

New Chinatown was the bomb before progress came and swallowed them up. They closed because they got an offer they couldn't refuse on their prime location.
Tropical is the best place left for sure.

Strictly for optics and legacy control.
Shalala has no authority, as someone that's leaving in a few weeks, to negotiate anything. Courtesy visit.
Nobody has the money to build the kind of stadium UM needs, instead of the typical cheesy MLS stadium with concrete bench seats for the fans, and no luxury suites.
Crap, we're begging for money for a much more needed indoor practice facility, and we still don't have it. It's likely that it won't be up for 2 years.

Interesting...Hurlie says the kid is well coached, and D'Onofrio keeps harping on instincts.
My thing is, how does a kid know how to read run or pass...play the deep ball...or cover...based on instincts?
And wouldn't instincts
suggest "freelancing"?...something that's a big no no in this defense...

D'Onofrio sounded like a bozo. Hurlie already said the kid was slow, and D'Onofrio comes back with..."Well, this is how Seattle does it".
NEWSFLASH!...Seattle has Earl Thomas...that's a 4.4 buddy!
Seattle ain't playin' with no 4.78s, or low 4.8s in their backfield.

They're also not playing with HS Juniors. They're projecting him from his current age to college.

"They're projecting"
The only person in that room that was projecting, was Hurlie.
Can't believe these bozos made a video to try to show Hurlie in a bad light.

Taylor Mays ran a 4.43
Kam Chanceller ran a 4.6

Ed Reed ran a 4.57 at the NFL Combine. That's after years of strength training and preparing through college. He probably ran a 4.7 or 4.8 as a Junior in HS

Funny how Mark criticizes safeties for backing up but will play 5 safeties on the goal line. I can't wait until this schmuck is out of Coral Gables. How does he even have a job right now?
Posted by: The Dude | May 22, 2015 at 05:00 PM
He made sense, and agreed with the 4.7 comment. You will rarely find a highschool jr running 4.5, specially at Safety. I think the point D'No was making is he rather take a kid who played safety his whole career who it's easier to project than a "athlete" who's never played it.
Example - DB2 has great instincts as a Safety, and he's a 4.6 guy as a College Jr.
I understand Hurlie as well, that speed kills, but we are not good at developing athletes to new positions.
The elf against the wall needs to stay there. How can anyone whatch that and not see this dude is a clown.
Posted by: Da U N Houston | May 22, 2015 at 06:37 PM
The guy has had to play a lot of players converted from other positions.
Dallas, Rogers and even Highsmith at times.
What he said made perfect sense.
Bring in guys who know how to play safety.
Posted by: Go Canes | May 22, 2015 at 07:00 PM
Of course he made sense. He knows the defense he wants. Whether he gets that defense to perform, or can implement what he wants, that's another question.
Even when criticizing, it's important to make sense. From strategic standpoint he said nothing wrong.
