Dear Miami Hurricanes Family,
There are so many experiences and memories I will treasure of my 14 years at the U. Just a couple of weeks ago, we held one of my very favorite annual celebrations—the May commencement ceremonies—where some 3,500 students fulfilled their hard-earned dreams by graduating from the University of Miami. This year’s festivities were especially bittersweet because I knew they were my last as president, and I was deeply touched by the heartfelt good wishes of the Class of 2015, including the hugs from each and every Miller School of Medicine graduate! I’m so proud of all of you.
I also want to thank everyone for the amazing tribute of renaming the Student Activities Center in my honor—I was humbled and overwhelmed by everyone’s outpouring of love, and it was done with the customary Hurricanes’ flair and fun. It’s wonderful to know that generations of future UM students will work, play, and just chill at “Shalala’s.” I am equally thrilled with the planned Miller School medical education building.
The faculty and staff from the Rosenstiel, UHealth and Miller, and Coral Gables campuses have been gifted, inspiring, and dedicated. I thank you all for “teaching” The Prez all these years.
As I prepare to step down, I realize that saying goodbye to my U family isn’t easy—this institution and this community are an indelible part of my DNA. So instead of leaving with a sense of absence or loss, I want to express the greater sense of abundant gratitude I feel for all of you. With excuses to Rodgers and Hammerstein, here are a few of “My Favorite Things” I will always cherish…
Students at study and faculty teaching
Patients in mending and researchers reaching
Diners on gliders for lakeside swings
These are a few of my favorite things
Hammocks on palm trees, alumni a-many
Touchdowns and homeruns and three-pointers plenty
Orange and green and Sebastian’s white wings
These are a few of my favorite things
When the mood slumps
When the road bumps
When I’m feeling sad
I’ll simply remember my favorite things
And then I won’t feel so bad.
Finally, I want to thank my best friend Sebastian the Ibis for always being such a good sport. Here’s a link to his farewell video message to me, in case you haven’t had a chance to see it—I love that bird!
Thank you for the fellowship, for always rising to the occasion, for making me a part of the one and only U family. I’m sure you will give President-elect Frenk and his family a warm and gracious ’Canes welcome when they arrive in Miami. It’s great to be a Miami Hurricane!
I intend to return to the faculty when my leave is over. Until then, my thanks and best wishes.

Rhuh Rhoo...

My opinion has been that this U's offense has been hot and cold much of the season, in spite of the overall big numbers, let alone the adjustment to seeing pitchers you've not seen before. They've also done a lot with other teams' mistakes, such as walks, errors, etc. Columbia plays pretty smart, even though clearly a team that should be beaten easily on paper. Nice sac by Columbia moving the runner to 2nd with one out now....pains me to say. The U often has one or two big innings rather than a lot of nibbling all game long. They're starting to run low on innings tonight, so hopefully they can play some D and have one damaging offensive inning tonight rather than having to play again tomorrow.

and we're getting Cooper Hammond in relief again. He had a great ninth vs. FIU in their regional opener. So far 3 hits for the visitor and 2 hits for the home team. Another issue for the U is that the little things (ie stolen bases, hits with 2 outs) simply haven't worked for them tonight.

FWIW, NDU lost to Illinois earlier and is losing late in the loser game vs. Wright State.
My guess that Oregon State would take the game vs. VCU was their kiss of death, losing and now playing vs. Dallas Baptist in the loser bracket.
Unfortunately Hammond has already pitched vs. this team, so they've seen his style. Now runners on the corners.

Thanks for all of the updating, TBC, and appreciate the ongoing. Gotta go do the family thing.... :(
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:22 PM
Yuck...dinked one in to shallow left, now 3-0....quiet crowd....check in later...
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:24 PM
If Miami plays like this tomorrow, they ain't winning shyt
Columbia leads 3-0 and still have 2 on with 1 out.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | May 31, 2015 at 09:25 PM
er, that was shallow center....

Miami gets out another jam!

Columbia 3

At least that inning didn't do more damage, like the earlier 2 run inning that could have been way worse. Now if we can get some offense generated in bottom of the 7th.
The good thing, TBC, is that we're not play in the CWS today, as they can't afford to be punchless any days there.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:35 PM
The U hasn't been shut out yet this season. However, here we are with a goose egg and only two hits so far, and with the first batter out.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:37 PM
1-2-3 goes the Canes....I'm done for the night. Time to watch Game of Thrones.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | May 31, 2015 at 09:41 PM
C'mon, TBC. Can't quit on this team. Anything is possible. I'm still waiting on a big O inning.
Unfortunately, now runners on 1st and 2nd for Columbia and Coach is coming out to make another pitching change, with Ricky going out...
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:46 PM
Bunt, one out and Columbia plays smart ball, moving up the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Now, up comes Maguire who is 3-3 for the night, so they're going to walk him and load the bases, hoping to set up a DP.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:50 PM
To left hard, out. Luckily it was hit hard, along with the runner at 3rd tripping on the bag when he might have tagged, although wouldn't have beaten a good throw, imo, if he'd gone. 2 outs. Needs to keep it close and give up no more.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:53 PM
High and shallow center, Eusebio catches it, the U gets out of a bases loaded jam. To the bottom half of the 8th and the bottom part of the batting order we go.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:54 PM
C'mon back, TBC! I don't feel like doing these updates, as I want to get my goofy U rally cap on!
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 09:55 PM
Bottom 8 down 3-0
Posted by: Gin & Tonic | May 31, 2015 at 09:58 PM
Brandon Lopez up: Fly ball...out 1
Only two regular season games this season where the U was held to one run, to FU and FGCU, and no shutouts. Offense please.... Col pitcher has now retired 7 straight Canes.
Abreu: K, looking....out 2....no U hits since the 4th now...
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 10:01 PM
Heyward: full count...fly to center, the Canes have 3 more outs left to get some runs.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 10:03 PM
that fly was an out, btw.
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 10:03 PM
First 2 batters out for the Lions. The danger here is that Columbia has only used 2 pitchers tonight, which is just what they'd want after playing so many games the last few days.
1-2-3, with the 3rd out on a K.
Time for the top of the order to pick up a huge 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th! Let's go, Canes!!!!

Eusebio, quick 0-2 count. K swinging.
Barr: Ball one, now 2-0 count. 3-0 count. No baserunners at all since the 5th...
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 10:14 PM
3-1 count. Walks Barr with one out.
DP, game over...ugh. How about winning the game tomorrow.... Night all...
Posted by: JCane | May 31, 2015 at 10:15 PM
Game at 7pm tomorrow.
