Golden really is good at not answering anything and/or deflecting. I do not mean that as a dig...He can certainly handle the media there.

Although he really didnt answer or say anything, one thing I did notice was he DIDNT give any BS excuses....that is a good sign.

Agree with you on McIntosh UMike, that kid's a beast.

UMike

Walton already up to 194lbs...good sign. I think he will get some reps this year...unless Yearby just kills it.

CaneRock

Lurker...UM got a raw deal, I think even Donna would tell you that.

And if by "in the worst way" you meant we would get the death penalty, I disagree.

Like I've said before, once that school in crappy valley got their sanctions in 2012, the threat of the DP was off the table for UM.

UMike

When Killian High assistant principal Courtney Collier told Sheldrick Redwine on Monday that he had fulfilled his requirements for graduation and Wednesday would be his last day as a high school student, the young man with a quick smile and long, flowing dreadlocks suddenly became emotional.

“I had tears in my eyes,” said Redwine, a soon-to-be University of Miami cornerback who on Sunday will report to UM and next week start his new life as a college student. “I’m going to miss high school. I have so many memories and I’m leaving them all behind.

“For me to be the first one leaving, it hit me all at once.”

Redwine and several other incoming Hurricanes, like thousands of other young football players across the country, will arrive on campus for the first session of summer school — before the mad rush of fall.

“He’s my baby, my only son and he’s always been a mama’s boy,” said Temia Lordeus, Redwine’s mother who teaches reading and language arts at Homestead Middle School. “I’m extremely happy that he’s close and I get to watch him grow.”

While a handful of incoming South Floridians will join Redwine in reporting Sunday, others, such as offensive lineman Bar Milo — quarterback Brad Kaaya’s high school teammate from West Hills, California — are leaving their parents to make a much longer journey.

“She knows I’m comfortable leaving so she definitely feels much better letting me go,” said the 6-6, 285-pound Milo, a dual citizen of the United States and Israel. He’ll attend his prom Saturday night before traveling 2,800 miles to Miami the next day. “It’s going to be crazy leaving home and all my friends behind, but I’ll take all I can from this opportunity.

“My mom is ready to let this bird out of the nest.”

It used to be that football players would report to school in August when practice began, and immediately be thrown into a crowded campus, full slate of classes and heavy-duty sports schedule. Now they arrive early to a calmer campus, get integrated with one or two classes, have time to delve into the playbook, begin a new strength and conditioning schedule and practice on their own with teammates.

According to NCAA rules, from May 18 to Aug. 6, eight weeks can be designated for players to engage in no more than eight hours a week of required weight training, conditioning and film study, with film study limited to two hours or less.

“Obviously their schedules are very busy and they have huge time demands,” said UM athletic director Blake James. “So from my perspective it helps that the kids are able to get a head start on the fall semester and already be working toward their degrees.

Here are the football players expected to report to the University of Miami for the first summer school session that begins Monday:

Offensive linemen: Bar Milo of West Hills, California, Chaminade Prep; Hayden Mahoney of Malvern, Pennyslvania; Tyree St. Louis of Bradenton IMG Academy; Tyler Gauthier of Venice; and Brendan Loftus of Tallahassee Godby.

Defensive linemen: Richard McIntosh of Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons; Ryan Fines of Bradenton IMG; Kendrick Norton of Jacksonville Trinity Christian; and UF transfer Gerald Willis.

Linebackers: James King of Miami Booker T. Washington and John Tauber (walk-on) of Bradenton IMG.

Defensive backs: Sheldrick Redwine of Miami Killian; Terrance Henley of Pompano Beach Ely; Robert Knowles of Miami Edison; and Michael Jackson of Birmingham, Alabama, Spain Park.

Note: Receiver Lawrence Cager of Towson, Maryland and linebacker Jamie Gordinier of Red Bank, N.J., will arrive in June for the second summer session

CR, so Jay Bilas did more than Donna in defending the U against the NCAA?

You just lost all credibility on this topic with that statement.

UMike

86...you make no sense lol.. "beating a dead horse"... that phrase simply means discussing or repeating something over and over...it could be positive, negative or neutral, its STILL beating a dead horse.

How in the world are bloggers "tearing down the Canes football program"...NO... Golden and his staff and the staff before him did that...we simply see this failure and talk about it. We also talk about how good of a draft we had, how good recruiting is going etc etc..but of course you cant ever manage to notice that can you?

Geez I thought SOUP was bad lol...I use to ask for 86...am I gonna have to start asking for SOUP back? lol

No.

The Dude

Say Miami wins the Coastal but they backslide in at 8 wins and get destroyed by Clemson, did AG do enough?

The Dude

Lurker, TC, Sota,

It's basically time for Golden to exceed expectations. 9 wins can win the Coastal probably, maybe needing some help, but no less than that without SERIOUS help. The margin of error is razor thin for realistic expectations.

Sarasota 'cane

Got to go through FSU, Clemson, VT, Duke and GT to win the Coastal this year. Even with a great HC, this is one of Miami's tougher ACC schedules, nevermind AG's teams playing down to the UVAs and Pitts of the world. The Nebraska game won't be easy either.

Posted by: The Dude | May 12, 2015 at 05:04 PM

I agree, but it will not qualify as a "pass" should he fall short of winning/playing for the division title IMO.

CaneRock

"we came out of that mess much better than what it could have been."

We essentially absorbed the same penalties as a school that covered up child rape, how is that "much better than it could have been"?

Lurker

Posted by: The Dude | May 12, 2015 at 05:04 PM

A while back, I looked at our schedule, and the other ACC contenders, and 9 wins almost assuredly gets us the Coastal, even losing to FSU.

j.w.

Agree Dude. Tough schedule, less talent coming back (I couldn't find any Canes listed by any expert as a top prospect for the next draft), and we're still hurting at depth for LB and DB. Not seeing 10 wins even if Kaaya is all that we expect, Coley bounces back, the OL plays as well as we thought last year's OL would play, and the RB committee matches Duke's production. My mind tells me 8-4 is attainable, but 7-5 is likely.

Go Canes

Agree 100% Dude.

The Dude

His job is much more than that

Posted by: Lurker | May 12, 2015 at 05:02 PM

Yeah, but you get my point.

The Dude

Got to go through FSU, Clemson, VT, Duke and GT to win the Coastal this year. Even with a great HC, this is one of Miami's tougher ACC schedules, nevermind AG's teams playing down to the UVAs and Pitts of the world. The Nebraska game won't be easy either.

Lurker

His job is much more than that

The Dude

By the end of October I'd say the over/under on losses should be 3. I don't think 10-2 is realistic with AG at HC. Miami will be lucky to be 5-3 on November 1st with a GT showdown looming. I don't see a path to 10 wins or the Coastal. I say floor 6 wins, ceiling 9, hopefully Al is gone early enough for the next staff to recruit.

The Dude

Blake's job at Miami is to sell the program, he does a good job at that.

The Dude

As far as him patronizing Miami fans goes, while I found in irritating, it was probably better for the program on the whole, I mean what was he supposed to do? Spout of on sports shows about how he wishes the HC was gone but the BoT wanted to give him one more year? I'm sure that would really help. Given, this is the most toxic situation in CF, and next year will only make it worse, but if Blake was told no, there really wasn't anything else he could do but stand behind Al.

Lurker

The Dude

I actually agree with GC to a point. I want to see Blake James go for the way he's patronized Miami fans, that said, he's actually done a really great job selling the program. Consider the ticket sales for all sports, and factor in how he's been able to do it even with Al Golden at the helm, no easy task. Everyone may say that Blake has all the say with Al, but I don't believe for a second that it's true. The BoT has all the say with Al and his contract. A president's opinion in the matter probably goes a LONG way also.

My buddy who is a nole fan posted a garbage story about FSU "owning" UM since Jimbo got to Tally. I'm disputing that fact, but the reason Miami is still revered as one of the greatest teams of all time is that when we "owned" our rivals, they were usually ranked in the Top 5 and had their eyes on the same prizes that we did!

Every trophy that FSU or UF has in their trophy case came at a time that UM was is in some sort of turmoil.

Sarasota 'cane

I think we are all in lock-step with our expectations for Al Golden this season. No one on Canespace will support anything similar to what we experienced last season. Way too much talent not to compete for the Coastal.

Lurker

Also, we'll see about Frenk, but I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't as visible as Shalala.

That's not a bad thing, the AD should be the guy that spends 24/7/365 on the health of all athletics, especially football. It is going to be do or die time for Blake James in the next year or two, because I think Frenk will be more of a delegator.

He needs to leave it to the a AD and the BOT to make the big decisions, and then hold them responsible for the results of those decisions. Everyone has their areas of expertise, and big-time college sports programs are not an area of expertise for Frank. That's not a criticism, that's just a statement of fact

Posted by: UMike | May 12, 2015 at 12:39 PM

I did say something like that in response to people saying that "Donna should fire Golden"

It doesn't negate what I said today. Donna was more involved with athletics than the average college president. She did it by choice because she loves sports, loved the SA's, and attended all kinds of sports events. Ask Soup, ask anybody. She was there, at parties, at celebrations, at games on and on. I was running into her all the time.

In addition, although I was never in the room, I believe Donna was more involved in big decisions when it came to big hiring and firing decisions, in the sense that Blake consulted with her a little more than what one would expect, because of her love of collegiate athletics and of the University.

I do believe that firing/not firing Golden was a big picture issue, and even if they wanted to fire golden, I don't think they would have them. But they were going to give him the extra year anyway so that was that.

Nothing I said is mutually exclusive
