With a 4-3 comeback victory over Ole Miss Saturday evening, the University of Miami women’s tennis team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Team Championship for the 10th season in a row.
The 15th-ranked and 15th-seeded Hurricanes dropped the doubles point and then charged back to defeat No. 23 Ole Miss at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in thrilling fashion.
“We like to say that pressure is a privilege and that’s a big thing that we’ve talked about this year,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “. . . Because you’re good and because you’re Miami, these numbers are on you and we’re kind of the targets. Ten is a big number and I’m pretty fired up. I’m excited to get it into double digits.”
Miami (18-6, 12-2 ACC) got off to a slow start in doubles play and Ole Miss (16-11, 5-8 SEC) took control to earn the point.
No. 65 Julia Jones and Natalie Suk won 8-4 over freshman Sinead Lohan and junior Stephanie Wagner and then No. 70 Mai El Kamash and Erin Stephens defeated senior Monique Albuquerque and freshman Silvia Fuentes, 8-5.
Senior Lina Lileikite and freshman Wendy Zhang held a 7-5 lead over Marija Milutinovic and Iris Verboven when play stopped.
“The job at that moment is calm them down, get them focused, get them on target, get them believing in themselves, and put it behind them,” Yaroshuk-Tews said of her meeting with the team before singles play. “It’s easy to say, it’s not always to do in this situation, but today they were able to do it.”
Her words to the team seemed to work, as the Hurricanes opened up strong in singles action and won the first set on four of the six courts.
Miami grabbed a 2-1 lead over the Rebels when the first two singles matches to finish went its way. Lohan, ranked No. 37, won the final five games of her match against No. 82 Arianne Hartono to pick up a 6-1, 6-3 victory and claim her 20th singles win of the season. Albuquerque, playing in her final home match, took down Verboven, 6-4, 6-1, to put the Hurricanes in front.
Soon after, Ole Miss leveled the match at two with a 6-3, 6-3 victory by Suk over No. 115 Lileikite. The score would not remain tied for long though, as No. 108 Zhang concluded an impressive performance against Stephens, taking the match 6-2, 6-3.
The score then came even for a third time when El Kamash posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Fuentes to make it 3-3. The focus then shifted to the main court and the matchup 2015 All-Americans, No. 11 Wagner of Miami and No. 10 Jones of Ole Miss.
After taking the first set in dominant fashion, 6-1, Wagner trailed 5-3 in set two and Jones was serving for the set. The First Team All-ACC selection not only broke Jones’ serve, but she won each of the next three games as well to pick up a 6-1, 7-5 victory and clinch the match for the Hurricanes.
With her teammates cheering her on from the adjacent court, Wagner did not concede a point in the final game. The win was her third over a top-10 singles opponent in 2014-15 and her second career dual match win against a top-10 player.
“I just tried to stay calm and fight, that’s all,” Wagner said. “[I was thinking], ‘Don’t commit a lot of unforced errors, trust my game, just get back to five-all, and then take it.’”
"Well it was that and the fact that I knew the tremendous fans at Canespace were rooting for me and had my back. I just couldn't let those guys down."
Editorial Note: OK, OK, she didn't REALLY say that, but it is true nonetheless!
Golden has finally made changes to the D.....Golden sought help from other successful coaches...we have a top recruiting class and are killing it in south florida...we have a potential future 1st rounded at QB...all things I have mentioned of spoke about recently that somehow managed to slip under your "seek out UMike's negativity" radar lol
Posted by: UMike | May 13, 2015 at 08:16 AM
beating a dead horse"... that phrase simply means discussing or repeating something over and over...it could be positive, negative or neutral, its STILL beating a dead horse.

Wrong again young Danielson, I tried but I never expected U to "get it" anyway.
Be Calm and Blog On...

Here's an idea...Maybe we can discuss if Golden is on the hot seat, how many wins he needs to keep his job and if the powers that be at UM care about winning football games?
Posted by: 86Cane | May 13, 2015 at 08:46 AM
86...that sounds like a plan hahaha
Posted by: UMike | May 13, 2015 at 08:49 AM
CR, so Jay Bilas did more than Donna in defending the U against the NCAA?
You just lost all credibility on this topic with that statement.
No more need for any more back and forth, you can't put ridiculous statements like that out there and expect any further intelligent discussion.

I think Norton ends up on the O-Line. Nevertheless, it'll be good news if all the kids listed above get in for SS1.

Cr..you hear that...you have no more credibility...what ever are you gonna do with yourself?

I think McIntosh is going to surprise a lot of people...very underrated prospect.
Posted by: UMike | May 13, 2015 at 09:17 AM
When Killian High assistant principal Courtney Collier told Sheldrick Redwine on Monday that he had fulfilled his requirements for graduation and Wednesday would be his last day as a high school student, the young man with a quick smile and long, flowing dreadlocks suddenly became emotional.
“I had tears in my eyes,” said Redwine, a soon-to-be University of Miami cornerback who on Sunday will report to UM and next week start his new life as a college student. “I’m going to miss high school. I have so many memories and I’m leaving them all behind.
“For me to be the first one leaving, it hit me all at once.”
Redwine and several other incoming Hurricanes, like thousands of other young football players across the country, will arrive on campus for the first session of summer school — before the mad rush of fall.
“He’s my baby, my only son and he’s always been a mama’s boy,” said Temia Lordeus, Redwine’s mother who teaches reading and language arts at Homestead Middle School. “I’m extremely happy that he’s close and I get to watch him grow.”
While a handful of incoming South Floridians will join Redwine in reporting Sunday, others, such as offensive lineman Bar Milo — quarterback Brad Kaaya’s high school teammate from West Hills, California — are leaving their parents to make a much longer journey.
“She knows I’m comfortable leaving so she definitely feels much better letting me go,” said the 6-6, 285-pound Milo, a dual citizen of the United States and Israel. He’ll attend his prom Saturday night before traveling 2,800 miles to Miami the next day. “It’s going to be crazy leaving home and all my friends behind, but I’ll take all I can from this opportunity.
“My mom is ready to let this bird out of the nest.”
It used to be that football players would report to school in August when practice began, and immediately be thrown into a crowded campus, full slate of classes and heavy-duty sports schedule. Now they arrive early to a calmer campus, get integrated with one or two classes, have time to delve into the playbook, begin a new strength and conditioning schedule and practice on their own with teammates.
According to NCAA rules, from May 18 to Aug. 6, eight weeks can be designated for players to engage in no more than eight hours a week of required weight training, conditioning and film study, with film study limited to two hours or less.
“Obviously their schedules are very busy and they have huge time demands,” said UM athletic director Blake James. “So from my perspective it helps that the kids are able to get a head start on the fall semester and already be working toward their degrees.

Lurker...UM got a raw deal, I think even Donna would tell you that.
And if by "in the worst way" you meant we would get the death penalty, I disagree.
Like I've said before, once that school in crappy valley got their sanctions in 2012, the threat of the DP was off the table for UM.

Walton already up to 194lbs...good sign. I think he will get some reps this year...unless Yearby just kills it.

Mike: that's you ^^^^^^^ stirring things up for no reason. I said, "credibility ON THIS TOPIC" - there's a HUGE difference.
I understand the dynamics here, which is to marginalize people that don't agree with your opinions or your boys, but let's be straight with the comments. I don't take people out of context, I would appreciate the same courtesy

Lurker, you stir up more shyt than anyone so please drop the "im innocent" act lol
I guess saying stuff like "No more need for any more back and forth, you can't put ridiculous statements like that out there and expect any further intelligent discussion." is being courteous?
Thanks for being so nice to us haters hahaha

Cager because, we haven't had a big body WR threat since Streeter.
I like Henley also, He looks like He has some return ability.

Golden really is good at not answering anything and/or deflecting. I do not mean that as a dig...He can certainly handle the media there.
Although he really didnt answer or say anything, one thing I did notice was he DIDNT give any BS excuses....that is a good sign.
