Top-seeded Miami was unable to finish off the Coral Gables Regional Sunday night at Mark Light Field, falling to No. 3 seed Columbia 3-0 and forcing a winner-advance Game 7 to be played Monday.
Columbia, who eliminated FIU with a 4-3 win earlier in the afternoon, tamed the Hurricanes’ talented lineup to stave off elimination for a second straight game.
“First of all, we lost in every phase of the game tonight,” head coach Jim Morris said. “Columbia came out and did a great job. Their pitchers threw strikes, got ahead of us and kept us off-balance all night.”
Columbia starter Bryce Barr (3-0) tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and surrendered just two hits, while fellow freshman Zack Bahm tossed 3.0 innings of clean relief. After totaling 14 runs in their first two victories, the Hurricanes (46-15) managed just two hits Sunday night.
“If you don’t have anybody on base, you can’t do much,” Morris said. “They didn’t walk guys and we just got a couple of hits.” The loss was just the fifth of the season for the Hurricanes inside Mark Light Field.
Miami righthander Enrique Sosa cruised through his first 4.0 innings, striking out seven batters while surrendering just one hit. But things unraveled in the top half of the fifth, when the first two Columbia batters reached via single and Sosa then hit Lions second baseman Will Savage with a pitch to load the bases.
After Sosa (7-4) walked Jordan Serena to force in a run and open the scoring, the junior was pulled in favor of righthander Derik Beauprez.
“I felt in the beginning I was pounding the zone. I was throwing strikes,” said Sosa of the decisive fifth. “At the end, I was just missing the zone. I couldn’t control my fastball. They did a pretty good job laying off of it.”
The decision to replace Sosa paid immediate dividends, as Beauprez quickly induced a 5-4-3 double play and a groundout to limit further damage to just one run.
But Miami’s offense struggled to get anything going against Barr, making just his third career start.
Miami will return to Mark Light Field for the third and final showdown with No. 3 seed Columbia Monday night in the Coral Gables Regional Championship Game. First pitch for the contest, slated for broadcast on ESPN3, 560 WQAM and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 7 p.m.
UMike quit. Didn't think management was fair.

This is a football score.

VCU is a #4 seed, but if anyone reviews their season, it's not a bad looking team. They are 40-23, with a way better looking record than the .500 season FIU came in to the Gables regional with. VCU also took 2 of 3 vs. our #2 seed, ECU, although ECU didn't do much in our regional. They also took 2 from Maryland, the team that could take down UCLA tonight, and took 2 of 3 from Pitt. However, they had a horrible first week of May.
Since it's a superregional, all that matters is who plays better next weekend, or better yet, first team to win two games. Many #1 seeds have gone down, and lower seeds like VCU and ULL (a #3) have advanced.
Nice game tonight. Look forward to next week. Man, not another review of the drawn butter story at the Light. Does this guy tell this every night?
Posted by: JCane | June 01, 2015 at 10:15 PM
Another #3 to advance, btw, was UVa of the ACC, beating USC in extras. NC State is still up by 3 in the 8th. With a win, we'd have 5 ACC teams in the round of 16....and people like to talk about the SEC in football?
8th inning done for the U. Just wrap this game up without injuries now.
Posted by: JCane | June 01, 2015 at 10:20 PM
NC State is now up 6-1, and the U now has matched Vandy's mark of 20 hits and 21 runs today, although Radford had committed 6 errors to help. Top of the 9th for the U, a Chester home run, now two on and two outs to try to make the lead a bit more comfortable....
Posted by: JCane | June 01, 2015 at 10:39 PM
Top of the 9th done, hope we can hang on to the 21-3 lead. I'm shutting down my blogging for the night. Hope all enjoyed the nice relaxing game...

I'm not complaining, but for some reason that was tiring. Four straight nights of baseball. Of course, I was doing nothing but sitting and eating peanuts the whole time, but still. No really, I loved it, especially since tonight was such a relaxing game. Last night put me in a bad mood, but all is well now.
Onto VCU at home next weekend, and then hopefully, the CWS.

Soooo does Miami play Jacksonville State this weekend?
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | June 02, 2015 at 12:26 AM
I'd like another insurance FG if we can get it?
Posted by: 86Cane | June 01, 2015 at 08:57 PM
The Canes didn't aim that low, they added another TD to be save LOL.
So far, the team has gone 5-2 in postseason play (ACC Tourney & regional), which is good. In the two losses, they gave up 4 runs in 12 innings against NC State and 3 runs vs. Columbia, so defense was good enough to give us a good shot at winning. Going forward, it's going to be crucial to find a way to score on a night when the bats aren't as hot as last night.

Posted by: Lur-ker | June 02, 2015 at 09:04 AM
FU was 4 seed and UM was 5 seed, and brackets for CWS would be 1-4-5-8 in pool A and 2-3-6-7 in pool B, so definitely UM super winner should go vs FU super winner. We'd have no time to get going, as the stakes get high fast.
NC State really imploded last night, giving up 6 in the 8th, one in the 9th to have a tie, and then 1 in the 10th to blow it officially.
Maryland ended up edging overall #1 UCLA 2-1 last night, in spite of committing 3 errors. Kudos to them.
Just take care of business and beat VCU this weekend..

Or, we could've waited "too long" and offered "late" and not got him because we weren't on him early enough and didn't offer early enough, and watched him commit somewhere else. Then the fans would moan and complain about that too.
I'm fine with a few super athletic kids who are in need of a RS year to help polish their game.
