The Miami Hurricanes are going back to the College World Series.
For the first time since 2008 and for the 24th time in program history, the Hurricanes will make the trip to Omaha, Nebraska as one of the final eight teams remaining in the 2015 NCAA Baseball Championship.
No. 5 national seed Miami, who won its super regional opener 3-2 Friday at Mark Light Field, toppled VCU 10-3 Saturday afternoon to become the first team to punch its ticket to the “Promised Land” of college baseball.
The College World Series appearance will mark the 12th for head coach Jim Morris in his 22 seasons at the helm in Miami.
“Just…wow. You know it’s been a long time since we’ve been to Omaha, so needless to say, we’re very excited, our coaches are very excited,” Morris said. “Our players don’t know what’s getting ready to hit them, something that they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
Miami overcame the shortest start of the season by All-ACC lefthander Thomas Woodrey in the win, largely thanks to a stunning cameo from veteran righthander Sam Abrams early in the contest.
With the game tied at an uneasy 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning, Woodrey loaded the bases with no outs on a walk, double and hit batter. Abrams was called upon in relief and promptly recorded back-to-back swinging strikeouts of the Rams’ Darian Carpenter and Jimmy Kerrigan, somewhat easing the nerves of the 3,680 in attendance.
When he induced a flyout to right from James Bunn to escape the bases-loaded, no-out jam unharmed to maintain the 3-3 score, Abrams (2-0) sent the packed crowd into a towel-waving frenzy.
“That’s definitely the loudest crowd I’ve been in front of,” Abrams said. “It wasn’t late in the game or anything, but obviously it’s a huge moment.”
Bunn’s ball landed in the glove of team captain Willie Abreu for the final out, shifting momentum in favor of the Hurricanes.
“He looked the same as he always does, so we weren’t worried at all,” said Abreu of Abrams’ entrance in a tight situation. “We had the same mentality: minimize damage. Then, one guy goes down, the next guy goes down and then you start thinking, ‘Wow. This is something special.’”
Abrams went on to toss a career-long 4.0 innings and needed just 54 pitches, striking out four and surrendering just a harmless single in the most impressive outing of his four seasons. He exited after a sixth and final inning to a standing ovation, having stifled VCU (40-25) for the entirety of his outing.
Morris called the crowd “great” and said the fans were “really into the game.”
Abrams, who played his freshman year in 2011 but was cut prior to the 2012 season, finished his master’s degree at Miami this spring for his final year of eligibility.
“I can’t believe that, having to come back for a fifth year from what happened my sophomore year, it ended up working out perfectly,” Abrams said. “It’s a dream come true, honestly.”
Miami (49-15) broke a 4-3 game open in the top half of the seventh, plating five runs to bump its lead to a more secure 9-3.
Junior David Thompson opened the inning’s scoring with an RBI single that scored George Iskenderian (double), while an infield RBI single from Brandon Lopez plated another run to extend the lead to 6-3. A bases loaded-walk to Abreu plated another run, while Miami added another pair on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Heyward and an RBI fielder’s choice from Ricky Eusebio.
Every Miami starter scored at least one run in the win, while seven of nine had at least one hit and one RBI.
“Our lineup, [hitters] one through nine, has been producing all year,” Thompson said. “It’s just a lot of fun knowing there’s no pressure on one guy. If you fail, the guy behind you is going to pick you up.”
I don't know what you're talking about. And what not.

Another day, another Gator in trouble with the law.
The New England Patriots announced the release of linebacker Brandon Spikes on Monday amid an investigation into whether or not his vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run accident over the weekend that resulted in three people being hospitalized.
Spikes, 27, is the subject of a police investigation after his Maybach was found abandoned and damaged Sunday in Foxborough, Massachusetts, per Laurel J. Sweet of the Boston Herald. According to Gail Waterhouse of Fox 25 in Boston, "at around the same time in the same area of 495 north, a 2009 Nissan Murano was reported hit... The occupants reported being rear-ended by a car they did not see."

I have been dealing with a Miami Hurricanes worst nightmare recently....yeah thats right, I got a 3 1/2 year old granddaughter whose mind is being poisoned by her mommas scaly gator family.
Now shes sharp as a tack and a bit of a trash talker and to be truthful it was starting to get on my nerves.
Well this weekend I was watching Gators vs Noles and that stupid Albert the Alligator was waddling around the stadium taking pictures with the mindless simpletons in Gainesvillage and I asked her if she liked him and she didnt seem that interested.
So this morning I hit her with you tube videos of Sebastian the Ibis and you would have thought the whole Mickey Mouse clubhouse showed up in the family room!
Sebastian actually got her to start to cheering the Canes and after I was sick of it she was begging for more.
Her Gammy (Mrs. Native) whom she adores and is an unabashed Ibis lover in her on right told her some Sebastian storys and I think we have turned her from the dark side.
Its a good day!

Ready for Omaha...I am IN Omaha!
No, not really, just kidding. Mrs. 86 has me on lock down this weekend on a five day vacation "honeymoon" over in St. Pete for a Gypsy Kings concert and then at Indian Rocks Beach.
I had to promise her the trip would NOT involve any tents, or bears or or even a chainsaw. I mean who goes on a vaca trip with no chainsaw?

The CWS is almost fully rounded out now.
We have Vandy going back, although this time theoretically as an upset, taking down the top 8 seed Illini in two straight.
Bigger yet, my upset pick to hit the CWS and keep going until the championship game, Cal-State Fullerton, a team that has been finding every possibly way to win since midseason, coming back to tie Louisville and then scoring a run in the 11th to win, taking the super 2 games to 1.
The only undecided ticket right now is the TCU vs. Tex A&M winner, with the game now going into the 10th after the underdog A&M team scored 1 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to tie things up at 4. There have been some really exciting games so far.
This means the Big Ten is eliminated with the Illini and Terrapins going 0 for their supers.
Pool A gets a double dose of ACC and SEC, with two of each. Who'd have thought two ACC teams would make it and one would have been UVa?
LSU would likely be the favorite overall, and is in pool B. This pool, on paper, looks a lot tougher with a bunch of former champs there. None of this means a thing though. Just gotta keep winning.
So 86....will Mrs. 86 be okay with the tube or smart phone going on Saturday night? Good luck! lol

Soup and Mrs. Soup have a blast this weekend.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | June 08, 2015 at 11:43 PM
TCU and T A&M now going into the 14th. If TCU wins, we have 4 of the 8 top seeds making it to Omaha. If T A&M wins, we have four SEC teams heading there. CSF will open with Vandy, and LSU awaits the winner of the game that's still being played. The winner of this pool obviously will play the U after the Canes take down pool A.
Posted by: JCane | June 09, 2015 at 12:31 AM
Oops, check my above math...would've been 5 SEC schools with an A&M win, but they lost in 16 innings, so there will be 2 SEC schools in each pool, 2 ACC pools in one pool, and CSF and TCU.

A look at the CWS:
1) Regional seedings:
#1 -- 6
#2 -- 1
#3 -- 1
#4 -- 0
2) Conferences: SEC rules (sigh...)
4 (SR 5) -- SEC (Arkansas, UF, LSU, Vanderbilt)
2 (SR 4) -- ACC (UM, UVA)
1 (SR 1) -- Big 12 (TCU)
1 (SR 1) -- Big West (Cal St. Fullerton)

I think if Sam Bruce has a good/great year he will be awarded a 5th star.
I also think Travis Homer gets a 4th star.
If Pickney was to get a FSU offer he would get a 4th star as well.
Stars may or may not matter, but the more you have on the team the better you end up doing (with adequate coaching of course)

Bruce should've already recieved his 5th star. They're not giving it to him due to his size. If he were 6'0 +, he'd have it already.
Agreed on Homer.

What's up Diamond Dogs?! Your old pal Mephistopheles checking in for CWS duty. Hard to believe its been 7 long years before the fellas got back to The Blatt, but better late than never.
I will confess that I have questioned the wisdom of keeping coach Morris in years past. IMO he got away from what made the Canes go, getting away from the run, run, run mentality of Prior great teams, and allowing our defense to wallow year after year.
I will also be the first to commend him on the team he's put together this year. #1 in the RPI says it all, and this team has not only upped the base-running and defense, (that outfield can cover some ground) but brings some pop to a stadium that is normally amenable to the long ball. But does it have enough to get through what IMO is the toughest route to a title in college sports? We damn sure hope so.
One thing that bodes well is their "relatively" easy path through the regionals. There are no easy games in college bball anymore, but I remember our draw as the #1 seed in '08. It was brutal. And after a murderous ACC tourney which the Canes won, (I think the ACC had 3 of the top 5, and 5 of the top 10 teams in the nation that year) they were severely challenged in the regional and super, and seemed to simply run out of gas in Omaha.
Hopefully this team will be fresh and ready to go come Saturday night, and get the series off with a beat down of the Gators, and ride through the winner's bracket. Unfortunately the rest of our bracket seems rested as well, but maybe Jim's got a little magic left.
GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!

I always wanted to be able to play like Tiger and now I do.
DUBLIN, Ohio — Tiger Woods hit a new low with the highest score of his career Saturday — an 85 at the Memorial.
Woods ended his front nine with back-to-back double bogeys. Needing a par to avoid the worst score of his career, he hooked his tee shot into the water, flubbed two chips and ended with a quadruple-bogey 8.

Even I can shoot 85 on a REALLY good day.
When you are as physically talented as he is there is no way your mental aspect can get in the way of your game THAT much. He might shoot a 79 once in a while but as a pro when you break 80 and get to 85 then something physically is seriously wrong.

### Joel Rodriguez, a standout offensive lineman on the Hurricanes from 2000 to 2004, informed local high school football coaches tonight that he's taking a job at UM.
According to a source, he's expected to replace Ryan McNamee as director of player development. NcNamee recently resigned. Rodriguez has been working as Fordham's offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Fordham.

Seems that way doesn't it. He had bad knee problems, but in golf, your back can be the real betrayer. Anybody that's ever picked up a golf club knows just how important your back and spine are in the process of a swing, and how much tension and stretching and manipulation your back is put under. Possibly his mental state might be involved, but a worse than admitted physical issue seems to be the most likely culprit, doesn't it?
Posted by: Lur-ker | June 09, 2015 at 11:51 PM
Great to see baseball guys doing well....a lot of our teams have done well guys and ladies. Great to see.
Tiger is hurt much worse than known....knee back spine have let him down. Great golfer sad to see him being average. I think Jack's record stands Tiger is so unique as was Nickalaus...nobody will get close for a long time.
Nice article in 24/7....reality is that many of the greats listed I mean all timers....were Butch guys. Coker may get some credit but hell most of us could have coached them ....by standing out of the way! They coached themselves! Talent level still good....but way down under Onion and AlPa nowhere near what BD recruited. UM will always get good players, and AlPa has some nice stuff....on the horizion.....key is this year. Hope we can win....have bounceback year....keep classes intact....then we turn corner start getting the greats and return to glory....could happen sure hope it does.

The game is set for Saturday at 8:00 PM EST vis-à-vis ESPN.
And no matter if the Hurricanes win or lose their next game will be on Monday. That game will be televised on ESPN-2.

First. I wasn't on the band wagon to CHIT-CAN Good Ol' Boy Jimbo, but I did suggest he RETIRE and spend more time with his grandchildren and what not. And that suggestion was based on Miami not being to a CWS in SIX SEASONS!
And if U have any inkling about Miami, Florida baseball. Then you would have known, that the Hurricanes NEVER have had that long of a DRY SPELL, since their first ever CWS appearance back in the days of Studio 54 ( '74 ). LOL
So SIX continuous seasons of NO CWS cameo appearances WAS a logical reason for the Morris distractors desire to see a new manager wearing the Orange, Green and White.
Nevertheless, that's all moot now!!!!
P.S. Florida will be the ' ADOPTED ' home team and will have the support of approximately 20,000 HAYSEEDS up in Omaha.
