If you ever saw the movie Karate Kid, then you probably will remember Mr. Miagi emphatically telling Daniel early on during his karate training that:
"U must have balance Danielson!"
People, and by "people" I mean Hurricane fans, wonder why the University of Miami football team has not won more games in the past few season under UM head coach Al Golden. Well, in this article blogger TonyCane does his best to explain at least one reason that Miami has yet to right its losing ways.
U see my orange and green friends, according to TonyCane, it is mainly about recruiting failures over many years that resulted in serious roster in-balance. The in-balance he sees he describes like this...
The numbers show a lot of the factors in the irrelevancy.
If you look at the overall classes, Coker recruited well and had a very talented team. But Coker failed to recruit wide receivers and quarterbacks, and after 2004 this failure caught up with him. It doesn't matter how good the rest of your team is - if you are running a pro-style offense and you have to convert a punter (Monroe) to just have bare numbers at wide receiver, your team is set up for disaster.
The numbers tell part of the story for Shannon as well. He had one good recruiting class (2008) that was ladden with a large number of 3 star players. He followed it up with a decent 2009 class and a mediocre 2010 class that was only ranked as high as it was due to the sheer volume of players taken.
Golden's tale is the easiest to tell with numbers. His initial roster was imbalanced due to the withered 2010 class (third gone within a year) and a depleted 2011 class.
His 2012 class, while strong, saw an inordinate amount of players transfer, fail to qualify, or get eliminated from the roster. This speaks to the NCAA mess, where Miami could not be choosy and had to take what they could get.
The large number of departures from the 2012 class, coupled with the 2010 and 2011 classes led to roster imbalances that persisted until last season. This year is the first in a decade where the team is actually balanced.
Bottom line, no coach could have brought Miami back to sustained, Canes-like prominence for the entire last decade. Presume that Butch Davis or Bob Stoops had been given the job in 2006. They still would have had to contend with the Nevin Shapiro disaster that was in the making.
The coach in 2011 would potentially have inherited a stronger team and been able to recruit a bit more on recent success (USC), but the 2.5 year investigation with the death penalty being freely bandied about would still have brought the program several steps back.
As a program, Miami is coming back. It's just taking a heck of a lot longer than I or anyone else here expected or wanted.
30....how you think we do this upcoming year?

David Beckham and his investors hope to move the ball a little closer Friday in their bid to bring Major League Soccer to Miami.
Beckham’s business partner, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, confirmed he is scheduled to have a video conference with Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado and the mayor’s staff Friday morning to discuss the stadium issue.
Beckham will not be at the meeting, which Regalado said would also address a city cellular project with Sprint.
The meeting comes about a month after Beckham helped revive buzz over his long-sought team when he flew to Miami for a pair of meetings with Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Donna Shalala, then finishing up her tenure as president of the University of Miami.
Joined by MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Claure, Beckham discussed the possibility of partnering with UM to build a stadium next to Marlins Park for his soccer squad and UM’s football team, according to various people at the meetings.
Regalado was traveling that day but spoke with the Beckham group by phone and met that week with Shalala about the stadium.
There is no indication the Friday meeting will involve UM, and talks of a joint stadium appear to have cooled. In an interview Thursday, Regalado said he hasn’t spoken to UM officials since his meeting with Shalala last month, who resigned as president in May. He said UM participation appears to be a crucial element for Beckham’s group.
“UM is the component,” Regalado said.
This week, Regalado joined several county commissioners for a meeting on the possibility of extending the county’s rail system to the Marlins Park area if soccer moved there.
In the interview, Regalado said he doesn’t consider the lack of public transit a problem for the Beckham side or UM, based on his conversations with both parties. “I really don’t think transportation is the issue here,” he said.

Who here has said "we should have lost to Virginia or Pitt', or who here has said "we should have gone 6-7"?
I dont think anyone. Matter of fact, everything I have seen stated we should have done better, we should have beaten FSU, we should have beaten Virginia and Pitt. It's why everyone is pissed.
The biggest difference, from my point of view, is one side has decided it's ALL because of Golden vs others who think EVERYONE and MANY things can be pointed to as reasons, including, but not limited to Golden.
In the end, he is the HC, he is the one responsible, yes, everyone agrees and knows this. He will be the one, along with others, who will get fired if it doesn't change.

I think it's safe to say for every recruit ditching because of the nearly 3 days Golden talked to Penn State, 100 scratched us off their list because of the nearly 3 YEARS we were stuck in the Schapiro mess.

The fan in me always says 15-0!
But if I was putting money on it, all my hope is reliant on Kaaya. He takes the next step, we win around 10 and up.

30...I hear ya...I always wanna go with 15-0...Im scared to make a prediction about this year. Kaaya should be great, but dont have Duke and our OL is a mess. Im happy there have been defensive tweeks also. I hope Golden takes the leach off Coley and the O.

Valentine saved face by decommitting from UM, and the PSU rumors gave him an easy way out. A good excuse, if U will. He was never going to qualify here, even though John Drummond aka Genron aka Leader of The Men said he could get into Stanford if he wanted.... But couldn't pass admissions at LSU and couldn't pass a drug test.

Interesting , Kiper said that about our guys on draft day.

How many kids were lost in recruiting because Miami hired an unknown commodity that had little to no ties in the community? Compound that with the fact that Randy did burn bridges for the name Miami in local high schools?
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | July 17, 2015 at 10:15 AM
Guys...Coker, RS and Golden both have done wrong....lets try and move past it and hopefully enjoy this year.
Posted by: UMike | July 17, 2015 at 10:21 AM
^^^ agree. Not sure why some just can't seem to let the past go.
20 years from now, someone on this blog will still bring up LC, RS, etc... and the reasons why we sucked for so long. :-)
Posted by: raizecane | July 17, 2015 at 10:30 AM
If only we had hired proven commodities with ties to the local community like Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson when they got here.
Uhhhh...
Posted by: Go Canes | July 17, 2015 at 11:23 AM
The problem was we hired in-house guys...UM lifers...guys that didn't bring anything new to the table. RIP to em', but I don't remember Paul Dee doing any big fundraising pushes...Hocutt's the first one I remember doing one. Face it, we were ignorant of the changing landscape of CFB...we became victims of our own success.
Posted by: CaneRock | July 17, 2015 at 11:26 AM
CR..that is well put. I always thought us fans and perhaps admin put to much into the whole "Miami guy" thing. Anyone smart enough knows to build relationships and recruit locally..doesnt take a "Miami guy" to figure that ou.
Posted by: UMike | July 17, 2015 at 11:28 AM
Jimmy brought a revolutionary defense...Dennis brought a dynamic offense...what does Golden bring?

As much as I dont like how things have went under Golden...and although I have no faith he will bring us "back'..I do think he has done more for Miami than his two predecessors and has done a lot of good here...just not on the field.
Posted by: UMike | July 17, 2015 at 11:35 AM
All good factual posts. The evidence clearly show that the rumors of Golden and PSU did NOT affect recruiting.
Valentine and his street agents knew all along he wasn't getting into UM. That would've been the only possible of fact. To say otherwise, is just playing games with the facts and with reality
Posted by: Lur-ker | July 17, 2015 at 11:49 AM
No one is "playing games".. there is ZERO evidence it didnt affect recruiting..what "evidence" do you have? You mean since no one came out and said it (actually one did) that is evidence? I am not saying we lost out on anyone...but none of us know if we did. You dont think its possible a rival coach told a kid "look, Golden is already flirting with other schools..you think hes gonna be there all 4 years for you"...you dont think coaches jump on those things right away and try to take advantage?
Neither of us know, so please stop acting you know all thes facts or have all this evidence..its just speculation and opinion.
Posted by: UMike | July 17, 2015 at 11:56 AM
I will say I believe it had little it anything to do with the collapse at the end of that recruiting cycle and the NSD disaster. I also believe it gave TV an out and reason to flip to LSU without looking like the bad guy.
Posted by: UMike | July 17, 2015 at 11:59 AM
I think it had an effect on soft commits like Valentine and on some soft commits elsewhere.

But don't get it twisted though, even though the HC isn't a "Miami guy", you still need that "Miami guy" element for recruiting. Look at the staff....look at the hires He made in the offseason.

^^^^^^^^^
Gentlemen, you need to understand a basic concept in logic.
There is also zero evidence that disproves we are not descendants of little green men from Mars who planted their DNA on Earth billions of years ago.
You can use that type of argument to show ANYTHING is possible.
It's fallacious and disingenuous.
argumentum ad ignorantiam - as it's known in the debate world.
There is actually plenty of evidence to the contrary, since other than TV (who knew he wasn't coming anyway), I haven't seen a single quote from a decommit that said this was the reason, and virtually all of them had a statement or gave a reason.
My point has a sound basis in reality, yours is based on disproving a negative. Like my previous example, using your logic, you could say that you had a top secret meeting with the president yesterday because I can't disprove it, so it must at least be a real possibility.
Posted by: Lur-ker | July 17, 2015 at 01:51 PM
Another way to look at it, rather than dealing in absolutes, in which proof is difficult either way, is to discuss probabilities. And based on all we know, and all the information we have, the most logical conclusion is that if the rumors had any impact at all, they would have been insignificant. Insignificant is equivalent to no impact. So why are we arguing this?

Golden runs a good training camp. That is all.
He has one bad coordinator and one unproven coordinator.
The defense cannot make in-game adjustments because the scheme is too difficult. Opposing teams with lesser talent but better coordinators who make the proper adjustments are able to beat us.
I hope I am wrong.

Ariz:
Gulliver safety and Canes commitment Cedrick Wright has been one of the most vocal members of Miami’s 2016 recruiting class.
His former high school coach, Jorge Baez, who is now on the Miami recruiting staff, has entrusted Wright with aiding in recruiting efforts.
“I literally just got off the phone with Baez an hour ago. I always tell kids to join the legacy and then they just ask me some questions. There’s a couple kids committed elsewhere that I’m trying to flip,” said Wright.
For Wright, this is all a part of the plan that he says has been in place for a few years now.
“Me and JoJo and Baez and Burns all had this vision when Baez left. So many South Florida kids were leaving because they listen to the critics too much. We know how good we were and that if we came then others would come with us.”
Wright has become close with a couple of Miami recruits that he was not previously tight with.
“Wayne Steed is a great kid (2017). He’s super chill, quiet, and a hard worker. Deion Jackson is another one who is very underrated with an unorthodox style, but he plays with swagger.”
He is also confident that this class will stick together, unlike the last few years.
“I think all the ones who decommitted were the ones who weren’t going to be here. I feel like everyone else is solid.”
At Gulliver, the team is as loaded as it has been in years. Wright believes the maturing they have done will pay dividends.
“Last couple seasons I could say we had a lot of talent, but I feel like this year we have the chemistry that we have been building since we were freshmen.”
The versatile defensive back also thinks that the crown is for the taking in 5A this year.
“I feel like it’s wide open this year because Booker T. is down and we are ready to come in there and make it happen.”
**Wright said that Paul Williams has discussed using him as a roaming free safety, as well as up in the box.
**Wright predicts 8 wins for the Canes this season.
