With Miami’s set to open the season on Sept. 5 against Bethune-Cookman, head coach Al Golden laid out the plans for his team as they close out #CanesCamp and move into game prep.
“This is moving day; today and tomorrow are moving days, if you’re going to do it,” Golden said. “Thursday is basically a walkthrough, Friday is game simulation for 40 minutes, but we’re not evaluating anybody there, and then the game is Saturday night. So, this afternoon and tomorrow, if you’re going to move, it’s time to move because when we wake up Sunday, we’re setting a team – and not that guys can’t grow and develop, and some guys are better in October than they are right now, certainly. But, we got to move forward.”
Defensive back Dallas Crawford is excited about how the team has performed this preseason. The senior believes the 2015 Hurricanes are as deep as they have ever been in his tenure in Coral Gables.
“There’s depth everywhere – every position, especially at safety,” Crawford said. “Like I said earlier, we have five safeties that can go into the game at any time and hold their own. But at receiver, there’s a lot of depth, at linebacker, there’s a lot of depth, and the D -line – there’s more depth than there’s ever been since I’ve been here, so it’s great right now.”

Lol! I knew I was going to get you to quote Forrest Gump as I was typing!
Exactly what is it that I'm hating tho? I hope he turns things around this year! But to act like what he's done so far is not a failure would be false.

### UM players have been buzzing about the creative wrinkles that have been added to the offense. “The personnel will be exotic. We'll have players playing positions they shouldn't but for us it works,” backup quarterback Malik Rosier said. “When people try to scheme us, we will find ways to expose them.”
One key to all of this, Rosier said, is speedy 6-4 tight end David Njoku.
Rosier said Njoku --- who also can play receiver and H-back --- will “exploit” defenses because “he’s a big mismatch. If they put a linebacker on him in the slot, it’s like taking candy from a baby.”
### Rosier said he expects to play a handful of plays a game and has been studying tape of how Russell Wilson, Marcus Mariota and Michael Vick have run the zone read. Rosier said his runs on zone reads have been successful in practice.
“I can get a couple of big explosive plays with it,” he said. “The first time I ran it last spring, the defense didn’t know what we do. The defense kind of hates it during practice because it’s so hard. But for us it’s going to pay off because when we play Clemson, they run the zone read. [FSU’s] Everett Golson will run some zone read packages.”
### Feedback we’ve gotten internally from UM’s closed practices: defensive end Chad Thomas has been very productive and is winning a lot of one-on-one battles; freshman defensive tackle Kendrick Norton is too good to keep on the bench this season; Joe Brown is making a strong push at guard; Stacy Coley has been very impressive and his route-running is much improved; running back Trayone Gray has made considerable strides; and under-the-radar tight end Chris Herndon is going to surprise people in the passing game.

Miami currently has 9 commits for its 2017 class, 5 of which are 4-Stars. All are from Florida. if we can win some games this year 2016 and 2017 can be monster recruiting years. Guys like Roberts and Thompson could easily become 4-star as well. I didn't realize how good of a start we have to that class.
Posted by: UMike | August 19, 2015 at 07:09 AM
Hope they show nothing new until they get to Cincy. They'll be better than last year, that game will be a tester leading into Nebraska.
Let's not give them anything on film to practice defending in preparation for us.
Posted by: Go Canes | August 19, 2015 at 07:32 AM
We should be able to be pretty vanilla the first two weeks and still win big.

Teams that's suppose to blow out these lower tier teams like us at times, sometimes play down to the level of these teams and we all know we have done that at times , I want to see in the first few games how we handle these adversities.

Gotcha Terrance, thanks man.
Then let's drop fresh terror on the Huskers!!
Posted by: Go Canes | August 19, 2015 at 08:17 AM
I think we will be 3-1 heading into the FSU game. Hopefully I am wrong and we will be 4-0. If we are 4-0 at that point we should have a lot of confidence heading into the FSU game.
Posted by: UMike | August 19, 2015 at 08:20 AM
Go Canes...only problem with that, is they will drop fresh terror on D-No as well lol...sorry couldn't resist! lol

Score 40 and it won't matter.

Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 19, 2015 at 08:28 AM
I agree, but we should haven't to score 40 week in and week out to win. We wont win many games against good teams if we need 40 to assure a win.
Posted by: UMike | August 19, 2015 at 08:28 AM
Just messing with you UMike, though if you look at the scores of just about every "great" team last year, they did have to score 40 multiple times to win.
Posted by: Go Canes | August 19, 2015 at 08:33 AM
It's not about needing to we should expect our offense to be explosive. And get our scoring average up to 40ppg and get our defense to lower our ppg given up from 26ppg to 20ppg.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 19, 2015 at 08:34 AM
No reason to not be explosive, I agree. But good teams get it done on both ends. When the O is having a bad day, the D needs to step up...and vise versa.
Posted by: UMike | August 19, 2015 at 08:36 AM
Golden said improved depth should also free up tired starters from having to handle tackling and blocking duties on kickoff and punt returns, something he had to resort to last year because of how poorly UM’s young players handled those situations.

Tired starters?!?!?!? Hell, back in the day we had starters playing special teams all the time. That's why they were so special back in the day.

Just another excuse for why that phase of the team was bad. IMO

I would have to say that this is probably the most important season in the history of Miami football. If we go .500 this year we will probably not be relevant for another 5-10 years. If we go 10-2, then you'll be hearing our name in the BCS playoff picture next year or the year after!!!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | August 19, 2015 at 08:57 AM
Back in the day we had 25 or more players available.

Another guy no one wanted us to offer/accept. We'll see how he does this season and beyond, but I'm glad he's making a push, especially at OL where we're inexperienced for the most part.

Didn't we have at least 75 players last yr? 2 deep on both sides of ball is 44 players, what were the other 30ish players doing which prevented from playing special team

Posted by: Go Canes | August 19, 2015 at 09:13 AM

When you factor in the players lost to season ending injury, we were probably a little less than that.
Posted by: Go Canes | August 19, 2015 at 09:18 AM
Go Canes...do you have anything to back that up? Not calling you out I promise, I just think it sounds crazy that we 25 less players available last yea than we could.
http://www.hurricanesports.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=658368&SPID=103763&DB_OEM_ID=28700&Q_SEASON=2014
This shows over 100 players on the roster. So over 40 of these players couldnt play?
If I am wrong, I am wrong. Just seems like a huge gap. How did we go from needed to be 3 under to being witout more than 25 guys lol...where is TonyCane! lol
Posted by: UMike | August 19, 2015 at 09:24 AM
If I remember correctly we had 75 scholarship players last year.
We redshirted 14 I believe.
61
We lost guys like Lewis, Olsen, the safety from NJ who came and went and a couple of others to transfer.
56
We had at least 6-8 guys have season ending injuries. Regula, McDermott, Scott, Jenkins and Knighton come to mind.
51
The rest of those names are walk ons.
Doesn't take long to get down into the low 50s. And that's not counting the four QBs, punter and kicker you have that never play special teams.
Posted by: Go Canes | August 19, 2015 at 09:37 AM

"Have you ever seen a 160 pound kicker covering kickoff returns?"
First of all they kick the ball, that's playing STs.
Secondly, have you ever heard of Matt Bosher?
Posted by: CaneRock | August 19, 2015 at 09:54 AM
I should say do you ever see kickers and punters making big impact on kickoff or punt returns.
You're basically playing 10 on 11 with exception of that bad ass we had here a few years ago who plays for the Falcons now.

The average punter and kicker think they're football players til they have a Sean Taylor in the Pro Bowl play.
Then not so much.
