Sophomore quarterback Brad Kaaya was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week after he led Miami to a 36-33 overtime victory over Nebraska last Saturday at Sun Life Stadium. Kaaya picked up his second career ACC Player of the Week honor thanks to a career day through the air.
The California native Kaaya finished the day by going 25-of-42 for a career-high 379 yards. He also tossed a pair of touchdowns and had just one interception. Kaaya has now thrown a touchdown pass in 16 consecutive games, while his second-half interception was his first in 110 attempts.
The Hurricanes are off this week and will return to action on Oct. 1 as they travel to Cincinnati for a Thursday night matchup against the Bearcats.

Miami Player Postgame Quotes
Michael Badgley, K/P
On the win…“It’s a big win, but I’ve always said to myself ‘take this win with a 24-hour rule. Celebrate as much as you want and then on to the next.’ We’ve got a bye week coming up and it’s time to focus on Cincinnati. Have this great win, see your mistakes and continue to be great out there. Everything is going to happen. It’s going to be fun.”
On Head Coach Al Golden giving him the game winning kick…“Him and I go back and fourth all the time. Obviously I’ll defend that guy to the world and back. He’s the greatest coach in college football and there is no question about it.”
Corn Elder, DB
On interception in overtime…“I didn’t have a receiver to my side, so I was basically just playing the field. I see them scramble and I just took off deep. He threw it and it just came right to me.”
On his performance since he has been focusing only on football instead of basketball and football… “Just focusing on football I’ve gotten stronger, faster and my technique has gotten better.”
Artie Burns, DB
On what changed in the fourth quarter when Nebraska was making a comeback…“We just weren’t doing our job. Guys were out of coverage, not in their gap, so they were making explosive plays. That’s why you come to meetings the next day to get everything corrected.”
On losing Jamal Carter and Deon Bush for the first half of the next game…“You won’t see a drop off. I feel like we have one of the best secondaries. We’ve got Rayshawn Jenkins and Dallas Crawford back there. We’ve got Jaquan Johnson, he’s going to step up and be able to come in the game and make some plays.”
Rashawn Scott, WR
On finally being able to play…“It feels great now that the coaches could put me in the situation. I have a great quarterback to throw it to me. The receivers are doing their jobs. It feels good.”
On when Nebraska caught up…“I’m not disappointed because it’s adversity. I don’t really care because we won.”

On Saturday Miami will begin their 2015 regular season when they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 3:30 p.m. at the newly renovated Sun Life Stadium. As always, Canespacers will be on hand to participate in the game-day festivities with tailgating beginning at 11 a.m. in Lot E5.
This game appears to be some sort of big deal to many Hurricane fans who have called it a "must win" game for Al Golden and company. I think some fans see every game as a must win game to be honest because most current UM fans (1983 to present) have been conditioned to believe that the Hurricanes are destined to win every game they play and that "Failure is NOT an option!"
Back in the day, when I was a lot younger, had more energy and enthusiasm, and was a little bit more invested (obsessed?) in the week to week success or failure of the UM football team, it probably would have been a big deal to me too. Now, I see it as just another opportunity to get away (from the wife), spend time with friends (drink beer) and enjoy a day outdoors (sweating).
Anyway since I know this game of football is a really big deal to Miami Hurricane football fans far and wide, I will do my best to pretend to act like it is a big deal to me too just to fit in and be accepted. So here we go:
This is a MUST win game.
The 40/20 rule is in effect (look it up).
This is a MUST win game.
Miami must limit mistakes, penalties and turnovers on offense.
This is a MUST win game.
Miami must play aggressively on defense and stop the run.
This is a MUST win game.
Miami must make big play and dominate the special teams game.
Last Friday we had the opportunity to visit the lovely South Florida city of Boca Raton for the Miami vs FAU football game. For those of you who have never been there, Boca is known for its ritzy shopping, high priced real estate and its extensive plastic surgery accomplishments (not necessarily in that order).
Some of the best "man made" structures in all the world (Rome included) can be found on the chic, trendy streets of Boca Raton. It is a city where all of the pretty people gather and openly and unashamedly compare their surgical "accomplishments" like others may do with their classic cars or pedigree pets or whatever their passion may be.
But one place we found that has nothing "plastic" about it is a local pizza pub named The Community Table. If you are searching for fantastic food, cold adult beverages and great people (and we were) then there is no better place to be in Boca than The Community Table restaurant.
It is the original home of the three P's: Pizza, Pasta ans Pints.
As part of the tailgate festivities for the FAU game, we gathered and then consumed mass quantities of highly edible food particles before the game. The management and service staff were all welcoming, fun and customer friendly in a casual environment suddenly turned upside down in orange and green.
While we all ate, drank and became merry, the chants of: "We got some Canes over here...WHOOSH, WHOOSH!" could be heard through the walls of the small, cozy restaurant. Personally, after a few beverages and then perusing (that's a Boca Word) the menu, I selected the chicken parm pannini.
Served baked and piping hot from the oven on a garlic and olive oil encrusted bread, the fresh chicken was smothered in gravy (that's tomato sauce to you non-paisanos) and melted mozzarella and herbs in a delicious combination of authentic Italian flavors that was simply outstanding.
We ate and drank and clearly a good time was had by all. We yelled: "Its Great to be a Miami Hurricane!" several times as we exited and then we moved on to the stadium fat and happy as any Hurricanes fan could want or wish to be.
We want to thank the good folks at The Community Table restaurant for their gracious and courteous hospitality and service in spite of our pre-game rowdiness and outrageous behavior. We strongly suggest that you give them a chance by visiting their restaurant in the near future!
Mark Walton ran for three touchdowns, Joe Yearby finished with 243 total yards and scored twice and Miami survived some very shaky stretches before beating Florida Atlantic 44-20 on Friday night.
Brad Kaaya passed for 287 yards and a touchdown for Miami (2-0), which got all it wanted from the Owls — who lost running back Jay Warren in the first half and played most of the night with backup quarterback Jason Driskel seeing his first collegiate action. And it still was a 20-20 game in the third quarter, before the Hurricanes pulled away with 24 unanswered points.
Warren finished with 132 yards on just 11 carries and scored a touchdown for the Owls (0-2), who drew a stadium-record 30,321 for the game. Driskel also threw for a score in a game interrupted for 67 minutes in the first half by lightning.
The Owls were thinking upset, and for a while it seemed like they had a real chance. But in the end, the combination of too much Miami offense talent and too many FAU mistakes — five turnovers in particular — was too much for the Owls to overcome.
FAU set the tone on the mistake front early, denying itself what would have been a three-and-out on the first Miami possession with a personal foul penalty. The Hurricanes scored on that drive on a 4-yard run by Walton, then made it 14-3 later in the first when Kaaya found Yearby with a short pass over the middle and the sophomore finished off what became a 34-yard score by dragging FAU defenders the final seven yards.
For Kaaya, it was his 15th career game, and his 15th with a touchdown pass.
It looked like a Miami runaway.
It turned into one — eventually.
FAU outplayed Miami for long stretches of the first half, tying the game at 17 when Warren scored midway through the second quarter. It was tied again early in the third, before Walton and Yearby took over.
The night belonged to Yearby, who became the first Miami player since at least 1980 with 146 rushing yards and 97 receiving yards in the same game. His 1-yard scoring run midway through the third put the Hurricanes up for good, and Walton finished it off with two more scores in a span of 7 minutes.
FAU out-gained Miami 292-231 in the first half, going into the locker room down just 20-17. But the second half was all Miami, with the Hurricanes outscoring the Owls 24-3 and outgaining them 295-97 in the final 30 minutes.
And when the game ended at 12:42 a.m., most everyone was long gone from what was a sold-out stadium.
It was the first time FAU hosted an opponent from one of college football's five power conferences in the Owls' stadium, and they broke out all the stops. Howard Schnellenberger , who coached Miami to its first national title in 1983 and then was the founding father of FAU's program, was on the field that bears his name for the coin toss, and the Owls were playing with plenty of emotion.
"With being full, sold-out for the first time ever, all that just adds more to the emotion of the night," FAU athletic director Patrick Chun said. "It's a great night for our stadium. It's a wonderful night for our football program."
When in Boca Raton, do as the rats, uh, make that the owls, do.
On Friday, your Miami Hurricanes will face the FAU Owls in the mouth of the rat (Boca Raton). For those attending here is the game plan for the event:
We will be meeting up with a large group of Canes fans at the Community Table, a favorite local pizza pub not far from the on-campus stadium. We will be having food and beverages there from 12:30 to 3:30 PM before lining up to caravan into the stadium so we can all park together.
Here is the info on The Community Table restaurant:
From 3:30 to 4 PM we will gather together once again outside the stadium at a super secret (well not so much) entrance gate where there is less traffic to drive into he stadium parking lot together so we can set up out tailgating headquarters.
If you plan to arrive later than 4 PM call or email ([email protected]) for directions to the tailgate. We plan to park in Lot 10 if possible. Hope to see you at the game!
Brad Kaaya passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns in less than three quarters, Elder took a punt return 72 yards for a score after having another nullified by an unusual call and Miami beat Bethune-Cookman 45-0 on a windy, stormy, heavily rain-soaked, lightning-delayed game on Saturday night.
It was Miami's first shutout under coach Al Golden; the Hurricanes' last was a 45-0 win over Florida A&M on Sept. 2, 2010 when there was calmer weather.
But the biggest victory of all might have been Knighton getting on the field. The reserve offensive lineman suffered a life-threatening heatstroke on Feb. 24, 2014, spent 12 days in a coma and lost 55 pounds, and made his long-awaited debut after many surmised he would never get the chance to play for Miami.
"I think it's the final piece to his healing and to our healing," Carole Knighton, the lineman's mother, told The Associated Press just after the play while surrounded by friends, family and even some of the medical personnel who worked with her son after the heatstroke. "It is God-given, Hunter-driven and it is a miracle. He was saved for a reason."
Knighton's first play came on a field goal try that was washed away by a penalty in the first quarter, as his mother sobbed tears of joy. He started getting regular offensive line snaps in the third quarter, when the Hurricanes were substituting liberally.
"It was amazing," said Knighton, who acknowledged having some pregame butterflies — especially since he hadn't played a game since 2012, after being redshirted as a freshman. "It's weird; I kind of forgot how that felt, being able to run around and play football again. ... I'm back and that's where I want to be."
Miami won its ninth consecutive home opener, but didn't escape unscathed and lost two wide receivers in the first quarter. Braxton Berrios left with a knee injury that had the Hurricanes concerned, and Stacy Coley departed with an ankle injury. There was no immediate word on the severity of either injury and Berrios was taken to a hospital for further examination.
"I think they'll be all right," Golden said.
True freshman Mark Walton had 85 yards on 10 carries and scored in his Miami debut. Joe Yearby and Trayone Gray added touchdown runs and Kaaya connected with Standish Dobard and Rashawn Scott for touchdown passes. Scott had 100 receiving yards on six catches.
Bethune-Cookman was held to 79 yards of offense, the fourth time since 1996 that Miami held an opponent under 100 yards. Miami had 379 yards.
"I think the first positive we take from this game is we that we did not quit," Bethune-Cookman coach Terry Sims said after his debut leading the Wildcats. "We kept playing. We did not care about the score, we kept playing hard and I love these guys for that."
Elder returned two punts for scores in the second quarter. Only one counted.
He had a punt return for a score erased early in the quarter after officials determined another Miami player waved his arms to indicate to the Wildcats there would be no play on the ball and it therefore could not be advanced. The game was then delayed more than an hour by lightning and the second half was shortened to 20 minutes.
"It felt great," Elder said. "You always want to start off the season right."
Rayshawn Jenkins — who lost his entire 2014 season due to injury — and Artie Burns had interceptions for Miami, which makes the 45-mile trek north and visits Florida Atlantic (0-1) on Friday night.
"Was it perfect? No, it wasn't perfect," Golden said. "But we're going to learn a lot as a team."
