ORLANDO
FIU spent the offseason preparing for Thursday. Not just the season premiere at Central Florida, but the kind of game it became — a game that demanded the Panthers to show they’ve grown up in many ways since the end of last season.
And they did.
The most tangible sign of their maturity shined from the scoreboard: 15-14, FIU beating two-touchdown favorite UCF. A block of Matthew Wright’s 47-yard field goal attempt by senior Darrian Dyson with 25 seconds gave FIU a victory in exactly the kind of game the Panthers lost last season.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been more happy for a team in all my life, and that’s a lot of years of coaching,” FIU coach Ron Turner said.

G. Holmes Braddock watched his first Hurricanes football game as a 21-year-old University of Miami freshman – in 1946.
He has missed 12 home games since.
Let that permeate: 12 of 431 Miami Hurricane home football games missed during the past 69 seasons.
And he’s back for more in 2015.
For those who consider yourselves the planet’s most avid UM fans, this gentleman likely has you beat.
Braddock, 90, who has a Miami-Dade high school named after him and was born in his grandmother’s back bedroom three months after UM was chartered in 1925, will be with his wife Ginny at Sun Life Stadium when the Canes begin their season against Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m. Saturday.
“I’m still around the 45-yard line,’’ Braddock said of his seats in the newly renovated stadium, which he still refers to as Joe Robbie Stadium. “To me it’s automatic. They play, I go. People say Joe Robbie is too far to drive. Not to me.’’
Braddock championed the charge for desegregation in Dade County as a nationally heralded school board member for 38 years, but he never stopped going to games — even when his mailbox was blown up and his wife got a phone call one afternoon in 1969 that he would not arrive home alive that day. Instead, he has lived life so thoroughly that many who know him expect him to be around for at least a few more rounds of coaches.
Tapped in 1949 by UM’s Iron Arrow Society, considered the highest university honor for those who embody “love of alma mater, character, leadership, scholarship and humility,” Braddock has intersected with nearly everyone whose past is entwined with the green and orange.
“This guy is a history book,’’ said former longtime UM assistant football coach Don Soldinger, 70, who, like dozens of old-time Miamians, is friends with Braddock and sees him regularly at the nonagenerian’s restaurant of choice: Chuck Wagon in Kendall. Braddock, who lives west of the restaurant, once was invited to lunch by Yale president Benno Schmidt, but told him he would go on one condition: they meet at Chuck Wagon — where he has broken bread with countless UM types.
“He’s just fascinating,’’ Soldinger said. “He’s so sharp and so engaging you get mesmerized listening to him. “He’ll say, ‘I remember in 1930…’ I’ll say, ‘Who can dispute you? No one was around then.’’’

Surprise!
Not.
Rush end Al-Quadin Muhammad, a 6-3, 256-pound redshirt sophomore, is suspended for the opening game against Bethune-Cookman, a source told me. Peter Ariz reported his suspension first.
Muhammad is expected to play in the second game, at FAU.
I do not know what Quan did. I can only imagine.
On Wednesday, coach Al Golden was asked if UM had anyone suspended to start the season.
"We do not right now,'' he said. "If there are any suspensions we'll tell you like we do every game. You will be notified in pregame if there's anything... That's our protocol.
"Right now we expect to have everybody.''
I think Al must have been crossing his fingers behind his back.
Curiously, we saw Muhammad in a scout-team jersey last week at the beginning of practice, before he sprinted back into the locker room and came wearing his usual No. 8.
Anyway, Muhammad, who repeated several times when we asked him questions last week, that he just wants to win the Coastal, win the Coastal, win the Coastal, maybe doesn't want to win it as much as he thought.
Quan, by the way, was suspended all last football season -- suspended by the University, actually, and couldn't take classes after getting into a fight after the 2014 spring game. I have no idea whose fault that was, but I did see the police report from another incident last year, and it wasn't pretty.
Muhammad's stats at UM, all in 2013: 13 games, no starts, seven unassisted tackles, one assisted tackle, two tackles-for-loss.

Giving AG the BOTD, maybe AQM was suspended for that little off the field incident He had. But in any event, it's time for Him to step on the field and make an impact, I think He can.
Posted by: CaneRock | September 04, 2015 at 05:46 AM
CR...Might be why he is not a starter, maybe coaches cant trust him enough. Crazy to go through that last year and then already slip up.

O-Coley
D-Grace
F-Demetrius
C-Melvin
Posted by: Go Canes | September 04, 2015 at 06:37 AM
Go Canes...I almost picked Melvin based off all the stuff I have read about the changes he has brought in...but I just dont yet have faith in the D'No/Golden system, so I couldn't do it.
I think even after losing Duke and then a likely starter in Gus, our backfield will be a big factor and Harris will have them ready.

Posted by: Go Canes | September 04, 2015 at 07:39 AM
Happy we are starting with warm up games. Teams looked awful yesterday. I get the aqm "hype" but Trent Harris beat him for a reason.
Posted by: laquinton | September 04, 2015 at 07:39 AM
TGIF!!!!
Went to that stinker of a game (UCF). Talk about your season coming to a grind after it just started.
One thing for sure is that it's nice to have a stadium on campus.
Posted by: raizecane | September 04, 2015 at 07:39 AM
Go Canes...I was going to sarcastically say that...but didnt wanna stir the opt already this morning lol... Good thing is if you guys are right, that should mean our DL was much improved. Just for me, I need to see it. Need to see the changes that were made. But IMO Ice and the RB are gonna be monsters this year. We got a 3-headed 305 monster back there.

Here's something for the peanut gallery to ponder.
Two of the best players in the country, not just of their teams, but in the entire country, Oakman of Baylor, and Bosa of OSU, where suspended for their first games as well.
Because like suspensions never happen, only at the U.
Posted by: Lur-ker | September 04, 2015 at 08:55 AM
So much for not stirring the pot first thing in the morning.

LOL, NO.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 04, 2015 at 09:00 AM
I'm hoping this first game suspsension is an extension last year's "crime", and not something new.
If it's something new, it won't be the last one we see, I'm afraid.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 04, 2015 at 09:01 AM
Ohio..I doubt it is. I think if it was Golden would have mentioned it before saying no one is suspended. He was suspended from school for that semester, not really football, which was a long time ago....if I remember correctly.
Posted by: UMike | September 04, 2015 at 09:03 AM
Because stating facts stirs the pot?
C'mon Mike, things need to be balanced. AQM has eight career tackles, those guys I mentioned are some of the best in the country. They were suspended, just like AQM. LOL
Posted by: Lur-ker | September 04, 2015 at 09:03 AM
I'm hoping this first game suspsension is an extension last year's "crime", and not something new.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 04, 2015 at 09:01 AM
That's what I was thinking, sorta like when RS suspended Marve for breaking that car mirror.
Posted by: CaneRock | September 04, 2015 at 09:05 AM
When they had em' at scout team QB I knew something was up.
Posted by: CaneRock | September 04, 2015 at 09:08 AM
Is it possible to state the facts and not add a smart ass comment along with those facts?
Posted by: UMike | September 04, 2015 at 09:17 AM
Im all for things being balanced and you bringing in the facts, but your post immediately takes a shot a other bloggers before you ever get to the facts.

Posted by: UMike | September 04, 2015 at 09:17 AM
YES, it is, but for some that is difficult. Especially if they feel it is 1 against 100?
Posted by: 86Cane | September 04, 2015 at 09:42 AM
What shot did I take?
Why do you focus so much on every tiny little thing I say? And then turn it into a huge deal. I didn't take a shot at anybody and this is getting weird.
Hyper-sensitive
Posted by: Lur-ker | September 04, 2015 at 09:46 AM
^^^ You're right, you never take a shot at anyone
Posted by: UMike | September 04, 2015 at 09:50 AM
You're right I don't
Posted by: Lur-ker | September 04, 2015 at 09:56 AM
No one is hyper sensitive...you are a jerk and a punk and everyone knows it. At this point I don't give a fuck if I get banned. You always have some smart ass slick shit to say and then when its pointed out you play the victim role all while again being a smart ass. Its obvious you get off on pushing peoples buttons all while playing innocent.
86, if you want to allow a blogger to constantly make antagonistic comments that is your business, but there have been far better bloggers banned for less. You constantly tell us to attack the idea, he is incapable of doing it and since there are no ramifications he just keeps on.
As long as Lurker is allowed on this blog I will be on a self-imposed ban. Just because you are more homer than hater doesnt mean homers should get away with everything why the haters get called out, bans, times outs etc.
Yall spacers enjoy the season and be safe...

UMIKE,
Your ideals about Miami Football are valued, probably most of all by those who pic with you. Because Canespace has this diversity it is one of the best sites on the net.
THEREFORE YOUR SELF IMPOSED BAN HAS BEEN BANNED.
Sincerely,
TC
