In our search for what makes a good head coach we received a response from one of our bloggers:
1. Recruiter: Must be able to evaluate talent that fits the scheme you will run. Bring in players who will fit your scheme.
2. Manager: Must be able to create a team of assistant coaches who are efficient teachers of your scheme. These assistants must be aligned with the program and evaluate talent aligned with the program. They must also be good recruiters, talent evaluation and motivators.
3. Leader: This is an action word, not a noun. The Head Coach must lead by example for all, players, assistants and admin. Has to have fire, excitement, and will to win. This is what kids look to during games. Take chances, go for it, and willing to stomp teams into submission. A good leader also recognizes when a change is needed and makes it swift and decisive.
4. Dedicated to win: The Head Coach must realize that winning is one of your top priorities. They must put everyone in the best position to win. This is a profession, not a job. Promotions are earned, no extension until you meet expectations. Expectations are to be set at the highest level. Every year is a national title year, anything else is failure, not for players, but within coaching staff expectations.
5. Consistency: The Head Coach must get everyone on the same page. Game management, game plan, adjustments, recruiting etc. If a change is needed make it and make it work. Players should not be looking to the sideline waiting for the next play. You had two weeks to plan, they are not showing anything new.
There more detail to these, but just a summary. AG talks a lot of these, from reading them in books and writing it in his pamphlet, but he has never put any of it into action. He is a salesmen and you can't blame the admin at first for buying it. But the proof is in the pudding.

Hadn't had this timing in a long time. Back to figuring out who will replace "Ron Zook?"
Maybe we need to find a name and date competition. Otherwise, I still hope the Noles go down this week!

LISTEN TO THIS REASONABLE PERSON:
So, let's just chill cannibalizing each other. It's ok to have differing views. It's America after all. Most importantly, stop twisting GC's words.
Truth be told, nobody really knows. When we get the next coach, then what? Can we all guarantee we won't be let down again.

AC was completely right. The blog is miserable when people want it to be constant insults and pissing matches.

I THINK GOLDEN HAS #1 AND #4 ... NOT ENOUGH TO COACH HERE
Posted by: canezilla | October 04, 2015 at 10:06 PM
Wow, well said. This is a very good article Da U.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 10:07 PM
All the points in the article are good.
But how bout not being the dumbest coach on the sidelines?
Game after game we get exploited on our weak points while not having a game plan to take advantage of our strengths.

Africane is righteous

I'll take all those 5 qualities in a coach. Now if I only had a crystal ball I could find the right guy.
Posted by: Lurker | October 04, 2015 at 10:28 PM
Good stuff Da U.
Think Golden has a lot of those characteristics, but his ability to channel whatever positives he does posess to game days have been a major disappointment.
How this team can play so dominantly at some points of games and so horrendously at others is what drives me the most crazy.
That inconsistency is a direct reflection on him. If he doesn't fix his second half offensive woes and his defensive ups and downs, then it's over.
Posted by: Go Canes | October 04, 2015 at 10:42 PM
And I appreciate your words Africane.
Posted by: Go Canes | October 04, 2015 at 10:43 PM
You never needed a crystal ball to know Al wasn't the guy. I'll take my chances with Butch, he's got all the intangibles.

I think Chud is a solid choice. He has the ability and experience and this would be a great stepping stone to get another shot as NFL Head Coach

Just like nobody knows Butch would be the right guy now. Unless you have a magic talisman that predicts the future.
Posted by: Lurker | October 04, 2015 at 11:03 PM
Boo hoo hoo. Some of these posts are funny. This shiz was never about differences of opinion, but hey I'll play along if everyone else is gonna. If there's a real truce to the nonsense then count me in.
Golden is a Dead Man Walking and we all know it. Now watch him mess around and go all "Paul Johnson" on us and win the Coastal, wouldn't that be ironic? The AD would really have something to ponder then. If this guy is still here on January 1, then we'll all be right back here blogging about the same garbage in Oct '16 '17 '18, etc. You can vault that.

Butch is the best candidate based on three criteria, value/experience/loyalty. There's no reason to look at anybody else because he's already stated he wants the job.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 04, 2015 at 11:10 PM
Do you think 5 is enough. Shouldn't player development be in there too?

Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 04, 2015 at 11:10 PM
That's a recipe for disaster in a evaluating candidates for a job. In any profession, based on my experience.

I don't need too, just hire Butch
Posted by: SinisterCane | October 04, 2015 at 11:13 PM
Posted by: Lurker | October 04, 2015 at 11:00 PM
I did, and I have a magic talisman that predicts the future. It says hire Butch.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:14 PM
Plus, the likelihood of Butch being hired is low, ebpven though right now I wouldn't completely rule it out.
People are going to hate what I'm going to say next, but I'll say it anyway: it's a really bad idea to let the fans tell you who to hire for a job. I've always operated under the rule that if it's my ass, I make the hire.

Well I'm only Associate's educated, in History with a little Anthropology. And it was a Jr college.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:18 PM
C'mon Lurker. He's a proven winner. Do you all realize what he almost pulled off at UNC? He had a defense as stout and angry as almost anything we've ever seen at UM. And don't pull out his win/loss stats while he was there, he had the rug pulled right out from under him by his school and the NCAA. That team was poised for greatness, and it was centered around his defense.
He'll do it again. Besides that he already knows most of the area coaches and his name recognition is second to none. We aren't getting a Nick Saban or an Urban Meyer to come to UM, so me might as well settle for something similar.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 04, 2015 at 11:20 PM
What UM HC hire have the fans ever influenced?
Posted by: CaneRock | October 04, 2015 at 11:21 PM
It's not like they're re-hiring Bobby Petrino. Butch is a disciplinarian who has already risen the program out of the ashes once. This isn't even a re-build by his standards, it's just a tune-up. He's UM's Jim Harbaugh.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 04, 2015 at 11:23 PM
IMO Butch will get us in the playoffs at least twice at Miami.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:25 PM
And look how he develops a front 7.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:25 PM
I'd completely rule Butch out.
In my opinion he has NO chance of ever getting this job.
If a change does come, I cannot envision any scenario where this school would hire a guy who's going to be 65 years old, hasn't coached in six years and who's name has has been linked with any kind of NCAA problems.
Whether he was cleared or not in the past, the UNC investigation is still ongoing and they can't take a chance of anything being uncovered down the line that can be tied to him.
Add that to the way he left here, stringing the BOT along, promising them he was going to return until the day he left for Cleveland and there are too many factors against him.
Posted by: Go Canes | October 04, 2015 at 11:25 PM
He coached in Tampa.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:26 PM
His name was completely cleared by the NCAA and if you follow the investigation, you'd see the problems predated Butch by 10 years.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:27 PM
And the BOT wouldn't give Butch a fair deal, they know it.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:27 PM
The BOT wont find a coach like Butch for their budget.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:28 PM
In fact the NCAA has given colleges the all clear to hire Butch. It would be crazy for them to do that, then come down the road later with charges.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:30 PM
What UM HC hire have the fans ever influenced?
Posted by: CaneRock | October 04, 2015 at 11:21 PM
I'm not aware of the fans picking any coach, but the players "hired" Coker and Shannon and you see where that got us.
It's funny that we question whether Butch can still build a team but if Jimmy Johnson said he was coming back no one would bat an eye. Because Jimmy would be an improvement over what we have now.
Butch is the guy if they decide to make a change this season, assuming another team doesn't get him first like South Carolina. You can vault that as well!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 04, 2015 at 11:30 PM
And from what I've read, a lot of BOT know his name and want him back.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 04, 2015 at 11:31 PM
