Al Golden is a good man.
Al Golden is an excellent public relations guy.
Al Golden is nice person and decent human being.
The only issue is, at least judging by his results and current employment status, Al Golden is not a very good football coach. That is a very sad fact indeed.
And, since that is his primary job, that is not a very good thing.
After Golden's firing, your University of Miami Hurricanes must move on.
To where, and with who, remains to be seen.
However, what we do know, is that the journey starts now.
Bring back Butch?
Bring back Coker, he at least won a ship.

I like Butch big time. Interview above is impressive. We shall see though. In the meantime, I just read Larry Scott's resume and i am very concerned. He has never been a Head Coach, even at the high school level. Now, I understand the U didn't have much choice, they had to appoint someone and it certainly wasn't going to be D'No or Coley after the Clemson game. But my word, we are really in trouble right now. While I want the U to take its time and pick the right guy I am concerned about the complete lack of experience Scott has to be the head guy. I mean, he has my full and complete support but this is a potential situation where the guy in charge has never done it on any level. It concerns me.

G & T that is hands down the most biased post of the day!! Hate Butch all you want but Coker wasn't shyt without Butch's players.

CORAL GABLES (AP) — Miami interim coach Larry Scott spoke out for the first time Monday night about taking over the Hurricanes, and said his first mission will be helping the team get through the emotions surrounding the firing of Al Golden.
-- Yea. THAT should be his first mission.

How many championships/Superbowl's was Butch associated with? It's off the chart! I know I'm getting greedy but think about Butch AND Greg coming back to resurrect the program. They could set it up for a 10 year run with Butch driving for the first 4 or 5 years and then Greg taking it the rest of the way after that!!

SJM, I'm pretty sure they chose Scott because the players and recruits respect and trust him the most out of everyone on the staff. Hoping players will rally and recruits will stick with him until a new coach is named.
Scott is one hell of a recruiter.

Maybe they'll make Al a going away card and decorate it with noodles. And tears.

You don't have to sell me on Butch. He is the man for the job no doubt. He would light up Miami like no one has done since, well him. I get that. But the history is complicated. We all know that. Egos are a strange thing.
Posted by: SJMPARMAN | October 26, 2015 at 11:25 PM
It doesn't matter who the interim coach is, all that matters now is who they hire. We'll support the team on game day just like we always do.

I wish Dan Campbell could coach the remainder of UM games. That guy would have them running through walls in a burning building!!

Butchs team was certainly 1 in 2000-01, won it all in 2001-02, and probably got jobbed in 2002-03 .....those kids were his....GT you lose on that laugher...Coker owes Butch....as do many of us. He coached SB champs.....he developed a team that would have destroyed HS, JJ,or DE title teams....those teams would have been wiped out by Butchs guys. Butch knows and develops talent. I think he can make us relevant and some.

"Up until this year Butch was always met with 'Yeah, he's not going to come back,'" the donor said. "But now Butch is the only person whose name I've heard in hypotheticals. Last year it was [Mario] Cristobal. I don't know if it's the new president, but I think they're willing to consider Butch now."

This is deep, and brilliant.
Posted by: SOUP | October 27, 2015 at 12:03 AM
At that point in time I would've taken crazy Mike Leach over Randy Shannon. Hell if he was UM's only option today I'd still take him over Golden in a second.
Randy Shannon and Al Golden are interchangeable as the two worst coaches to head coach The U in the modern era. The fact that they both came on the heals of Larry Coker makes it even more depressing!!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 27, 2015 at 12:10 AM
The interview was brilliant. Got to say the msn knows what he wants and dpeaks from the heart. I second that description of our past dynasty that Butch played a major part in. It beats hearing coporate bs that we have heard for the last 5 years...the man is a motivator..

There's a snowball rolling downhill picking up steam and his name is Butch Davis!! He is 10x more likely today then he was on Sunday to be UM's next coach and he'll be 10x more likely tomorrow as well.
If you peruse the long read that Sinister so kindly posted above then there really shouldn't even be a need for a discussion. The notion that Butch Davis would do more harm than good if he were given the opportunity to be the next HC at UM is a fallacy.
How is it Dean Smith is never mentioned for those fake classes setup 15 years before Butch ever set foot on their campus? After reading that interview and listening to Butch on the Radio today UM would be a fool to let him slip away. The guy has just as many rings as Jimmy and had he not made a mistake that he freely admits he would likely have 2-3 more.
Butch is the best coach available for UM, he's available, and he's hungry. What more can you ask for??
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 27, 2015 at 12:24 AM
Butch Davis had the best UM champions...really were from 2000-2003...shit his teams destroy Howies, JJs or DEs teams easily. While AlPa is a good person, I am not crying for him at all. He is leaving with big $, and he had a fair chance. He could not win.
I want Butch to be treated fair at least hear him out

From what I've been reading it sounds like they're ready to compete financially to a point. They will never spend like ALA or OSU, nor should they. Once you put the fence around the 305 then watch out!! Titles become attracted to UM like magnets!!

Butch is already making lists.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 27, 2015 at 04:04 AM
If you use your logic, Butch makes the most sense. Knows FL recruiting grounds, is known, can name drop individuals and greatest team ever assembled as recruits he brought to UM that won and starred in the NFL, and that with the staff he is assembling he is committed to bringing the U back. The other UM guys are ok and may do ok....Butch will win. Age makes no difference....you do not forget. I am no Butch but 36 years I have taught aggression attack and fundamentals....and stayed with the strong basics but also studied the new wrinkles....west coast, pistol, shotgun, spread, 46, 4/4 stack, 4/2/5....diamond and 1.....wing t, option, single wing, wishbone, I have roots in many eras and ideas....so I am sure Butch is fine.
Bottom line is a bunch of jerkoff liberal academic assclowns ....including Bernie, Ahole, and the Buanicontis....who have failed for 12 years to get it right....need to drink a martini, face the fact that the crap at NC did happen under Butch, but he was not in on it.....hire the man that is head and shoulders above anyone regarding qualifications.
Kirby Gruden Strong.....those guys are not coming here...Butch is the man.

Posted by: VA Cane | October 27, 2015 at 05:34 AM
Politics have nothing to do with the fact that the U has dropped the ball for more than a decade.
Because the schools that are way ahead of us at the moment are being run by "jerkoff liberal academic assclowns", as you prefer to call them, as well.

I really like Tom Herman. When you are as good as he is, the evidence is apparent immediately. His record with the OSU QBs and his 7-0 record at Houston lead me to one undeniable conclusion -- Herman can flat out coach some football
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | October 27, 2015 at 07:17 AM
Maybe so, but this bunch is so arrogant so sure they are right that they know what is right for football....they cannot come close to getting it right...look at the last 3 hires.....horrible....and if it makes you happy that is cool. Hey if you like it that's grand. I look at it this way....life is not fair at all, and everybody does NOT get a trophy. I never give MVP or individual honors on my teams....never have never will. When you win titles, its all about great coaching and great players working together.
Get off your highhorse, get real, stop thinking you know....you don't know...listen to football people get a real coach.

One must exclude former hurricane players as they are just a tad bias. I would be fine with Butch but would love to see someone come in and implement a high octane offense and I don't know if that is what Butch will do. For me personally, I want an offensive guru..... with the speed Miami can get, it could be the greatest show on grass :-)
Posted by: raizecane | October 27, 2015 at 07:50 AM
I would like Butch but there are others to consider as well. Herman may be a great choice...not sure he would be interested. .. good coach. I think its a hard job to fill either way. Clappy and Onion were UM guys...but no results. AlPa an outsider....didn't work.
Takes a special guy. I think Butch could come in save recruiting, get the program going foward right the ship, build it back to winning and pass it on. Time will tell.

Off topic?
Let's hope Kaaya and Scott are OK. Any news?
Nothing is more important than the health of our players.
And we need to focus on preparations for the next game.

It's all good. I'm also mostly OK with what VA Cane said, except for the part where he puts the blame on one side of the political spectrum. My point is that football ignorance in administrations, especially the one here at UM, transcends political borders.

SI's take on the coaching search:
"The most likely option is someone with a link to the past, like former defensive coordinator Greg Schiano or former tight end and offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. After all, the past and recruiting base are the only real strong sells at Miami. (...)
Names: Greg Schiano, Rob Chudzinski, Mario Cristobal, Doc Holliday, Tom Herman and Justin Fuente."

No surprise here besides no Butch on the list. But they're only guessing, like the rest of us.
