Ohio_Cane... on Butch at UNC...

Do you think it's other coaches out there that would have done better at UNC?

THE MAN

Venables should be on the top of the list! ACC guy, proven coordinator at a top school, D is always stout, they recruit the crap out of FL, young, and fiery. Don't need an "up and coming coach from a small school." Give me a proven coordinator who is a good recruiter at a big time school any day!

mi@mic@ne

Somebody needs to rally around Butch to ask people to text the bots in his support and blow up the bots commuters lol

Welcome Back OGV and U are 100% Correct!!

This is what employers look at. A timeline of your most recent performance.

Coaching employment - Butch Davis

2007-2010 UNC
-W/L record: 28-23
-Bowl record 1-2
-ACC record 15-17
-2008 and 2009 wins vacated (total 16 wins vacated)
-Fired 2010 amid academic scandal (Blake scandal also on record)

2010-present
-Unemployed as coach
-1 year as consultant in 2012
-Fired with entire staff 2013

This is his recent track record in football. His recent resume. Which is the most relevant. Just saying.

I deliberately got off Canespace yesterday, never expecting the AG firing so soon. I missed the biggest day in UM football for 5 years! For a day canespace will be united, then the debate and ultimate hire will divide us again. One thing for sure, if the hire isn't Butch, some folk on here will explode.

As for his replacement? So. Cal job has to be filled 1st, after that I think we are just edged by USC (Carolina) due to money only. My short list (not in order) is as follows:

Smart - can't believe no one mentioned him until about an hour ago. Would be a slam dunk from the Saban tree. So. Car likely having a long look also.

Herman - might have to wait on So.Cal, though I think USCwill be looking bigger. From the Meyer tree. Remember we could have made a run at Summlin? He'd be a slam dunk.

Christobal - not a traiter IMO. Smartest man in the room when he bolted to Saban. Years under Saban now, strong ties, will recruit great. Another slam dunk.

Davis - for all the reasons mentioned. Just don't think it will happen.

Schiano - almost the opposite of AG. Would fire this team up. Can recruit, NFL experience. Could have a Harbaugh like impact. Couldn't go wrong.

All I know is that it is exciting. Any of the above and the other will be a massive upgrade. Take care of the X and Os and the talent will take care of the rest.

Onward and upward, a great day to be a Cane!

Sota, I read your entire post. Butch isn't the only person being mentioned or endorsed. I'm just disputing your snow ball notion. There's no snowball, imo. Just a lot of noise. Not only for Butch either.

Not sure.

I'm sure there's some elite coaches out there that could've done better. Saban, Meyer, etc, but guys like that would never take a job at UNC.

Not to mention it's not like it's easy to recruit to UNC considering they're known for nothing but soccer and basketball, generally.

Anybody whose still here blogging about this team, day after day, year after long year, has some mental issues. Every last one of us.

As I stated earlier about Butch's stint at UNC you can cherry pick his record to say anything you want while simultaneously glossing over the fact that he assembled personnel that rivaled his championship personnel at UM.

He went into his last season with both hands tied behind his back so it's not surprising that a lot of folks didn't see what was happening before it imploded.

Did I mention that he is the best available candidate for the UM job regardless of his time at UNC??

mi@mic@ne

We played that team at UNC ...it was a stout d that would have destroyed us..but most of the players were suspended and we won...if Butch had those players on the field we would not have won that game.

mi@mic@ne

I remember the pundits talking about all the NFL talent that Butch had assembled on that d at NC ..but they were suspended for our game

Another great candidate. There are plenty of very talented candidates. As stated, any of them will be a massive upgrade.

mi@mic@ne

If we talk about getting this guy or that guy who can coach his style of defense ...or we want the guy with the dynamic offense we are asking for trouble...its not the style of offense or defense...we had one of the best offensive minds in college football in Erickson..yet without the talent it did not matter...we need the guy who brings such good talent that we can run a few plays and they cant stop us and a vanilla defense that is stout ... Butch is the only one who can accomplish these goals

THE MAN

Posted by: USAFCane | October 26, 2015 at 02:54 PM

Venables has all the traits you are looking for. Young, recruits well, defense minded, proven results at big time schools, fiery and from ACC and most likely stay in ACC. No other coach out there even comes close to what he has accomplished recently. I know everyone always says a Miami guy, but all past great Miami coaches weren't Miami guys, just good at their craft. I'm always against retreads, but that's just my opinion. Give me a proven, current guy anyday!

mi@mic@ne

Venables has not been a head coach...thats a big upgrade to take a chance on.

Who do you want to be Miami's replacement for the interim guy running this thing now? If you don't want to name names just give me what you want to see in the '16 opener different from the last five seasons instead because I'm curious.

mi@mic@ne

Jimmy, Erickson were head coaches even tho they were not a proven winner

THE MAN

No one ever walked in as a HC. They all started somewhere. He has all the tools. Small school HC with success is not the right fit in my opinion and retreads aren't either. There are many reasons why they aren't coaching currently at the HC level. I'll take a top coordinator any day over those other options. The other options are much more risky in my opinon. Top coordinators have success making the switch. Obviously there are examples for both sides good and bad, but I bet more good then bad.

To quote someone more famous and smarter than either of us, So What? It isn't "most relevant" necessarily and his record at Caroling came after taking a job that had truly bottomed out. Don't forget most of his North Carolina rosters were better than our teams of the same era and he kicked our arses on the field pretty much every time we played. He's been there and succeeded at this school. Every day the UNC mess moves further away from him, making him more hire-able.

mi@mic@ne

Butch is not a retread.. there are a lot of good coaches who have a lower IQ.. Especially a football IQ..your also getting a guy who has coached in two super bowls...lol its a no brainer.. the guy is smarter than anyone out there

Sarasota 'cane

One thing is for certain, with Butch so publicly campaigning so passionately for his old job, he is all but guaranteeing that UM's next coach will be a great coach with a proven track record. There's no way they can pass him over for some Dollar Store retread like Golden.

thirstybuzzardcane

Smart is not coming here....he's saying he's interested only to up his stock so the Gamecocks will pay him $$$$$. He's just playing the game!

would you rather be a cane or a cock...i rest my case lol Smart will never be a cane lol

He can't get a HC job or he'll lose the money that is still owed to him. His contract with UNC ends in 2015

The gods are screaming ..its not a coincidence that Butch is freed to coach again just at the time that Golden laid an egg...lol

That is true, but how many hot head coaches in waiting don't take other jobs just to keep collecting a pay check?

I say VENABLES or bust!

thirstybuzzardcane

The thing I don't know about Chud is does he have the motivation personality ! He seems like a pretty laid back quiet guy. We need someone who is loud and agressive!

Chud doesn't have the recruiting ties that UM needs right now IMO.

Makes zero sense.

UNC owed him 2.4 mil spread out over 4 years, so he is making 600k per year for doing nothing.

Great gig for someone who doesn't want back into coaching. But he has stated he wanted to coach since he was let go, he would be making over 2 mil / year anywhere he went, if not more.

Last I checked, 2 mil per year > 600k.

RCCF

For everyone who thinks Chudz has no recruiting ties what did he do as a coach, sit on his thumbs? LoL

No Recruiting lol

Lurker

Hire Doc Holliday.

Just for the name alone.

But do we get the Dennis Quaid Doc Holliday or the Val Kilmer Doc Holliday?

mi@mic@ne

chud and clappy were great o coordinators here but just like Randy your taking a chance in moving them into the head coaching position...its hard not to see an assistant moving up to a head coach not as a dollar store higher...you need a guy like Butch who has experience with demanding to be backed with money in order to run the program at this championship level... you saw what happened when they hired Randy on the cheap...

mi@mic@ne

hire lol

Lurker

No, Sota is right. Chud has zero recruiting ties right now. Been in the pros like 15 years.

To me he he's the least attractive of the candidates, just from a personality standpoint. Good offensive mind, though.

Sarasota 'cane

Chud hasn't recruited college kids in 15 years. I'm not anti Chud, I just think that there are 3 guys being considered that have a better recruiting resume than Chud does.

He's #4 on my list.
