I'm not defending Al, or condemning Butch. I'm just saying it's not as cut and dry "Butch or no one" as a lot are making it out to be.

It's not "Butch or no one" to me, it's "Butch is the best candidate available". I'll roll with any of the other top notch guys that are popping up, but like you I would love to see what Butch could do if given the opportunity.

GoldenHomer

If Smart is legitimately interested, he is my new #1 choice.

Sarasota 'cane

Posted by: The Dude | October 26, 2015 at 01:19 PM

UNC's defense was UM circa 2000 before the NCAA dropped the hammer. They were poised to contend for a title IMO. It's funny when people point to his record that year and not acknowledge what he had actually assembled on the field.

Ohio_Cane

I, personally, would've hired Butch yesterday afternoon. That's just me, though. The school has to vet every candidate and do thorough research. They can't hire another Golden, and they know it.

Ohio_Cane

UNC's defense was great, not good. The O was close and on O he was developing studs everywhere, WR, TE, RB and TE. He put a bunch of guys in the NFL at UNC. A bunch.

Posted by: The Dude | October 26, 2015 at 01:19 PM
-------------------------------------------

Minus the defense, that sounds like Golden. Dorsett, Walford, Duke, etc to compare to "developing studs". Golden had 7 guys drafted last year, so he put a bunch of guys in the NFL too.

I'm not defending Al, or condemning Butch. I'm just saying it's not as cut and dry "Butch or no one" as a lot are making it out to be.

He got an NFL team into the playoffs and UNC's defense was great, not good. The O was close and on O he was developing studs everywhere, WR, TE, RB and TE. He put a bunch of guys in the NFL at UNC. A bunch.

Sarasota 'cane

Those were quotes fro the article that Ohio posted. I should've cited that. That article was awesome. Again Butch is the first out of the gate and only he and Schiano can be approached without permission. That's a clear advantage for both candidates if the BOT is smart and wants to get their new guy on the recruiting trail by November.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | October 26, 2015 at 01:06 PM

I think we play in the ACC CG next year, if Kaaya stays, could win it. I think he kills recruiting. Some 5s, some 4s, some 3s and all talented. Guy is already making a list for staff hires... guy wants this so bad. He's hungry.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Lebatard and Stugotz talked a bunch about Butch making a lot of sense.

Sarasota 'cane

Which leads me to this question: If Davis entered Miami now, with no NCAA issues and a full allotment of scholarships, how do you think he'd do? Frankly I think he'd kill it. To be blunt, I think he'd have a National Championship contender within just a few years.

Sarasota 'cane

"Basically, to quote Donald Trump, there's only one guy who can "Make Miami Great Again." That man is Butch Davis. And frankly, he's the only guy Miami should consider."

Sarasota 'cane

I love the fact that Butch is the first one out of the gate with a desire to coach the team. The school will need permission to to talk to most of the remaining guys except for Schiano.

And I'm not sure why so many here hate Schiano. His schtick, not unlike Saban, may not play well in the NFL but shouldn't be an issue at the college level. Both Butch and Schiano are disciplinarian's who don't allow the inmates to run the asylum.

Hey, you were in front of this debacle from the jump. No one will testify to that more on here than me and we're founding 12%ers on here together so I can understand your POV in not throwing in a towel on an argument you've won decisively. But now is not the time to rehash this garbage with the losers who are still trying to strain viable genetic material from a buried failure of a body of non-work for a peanut paycheck from an AD on his way to the unemployment line with a bunch of other crooks still lurking around robbing every last penny they can before they're turfed. You'll see a lot more BS going forward because the moderation on here is lip service at best and in reality is there to assist in the waving of pom poms stuck up some troll's Sandusky weekend retreat, but just use your smarts to pick out that bullshit and scroll right past it because if you do, there's still nuggets of good blogging to be sifted through the dung of that other shit. Remember the mantra of 58-0 at home Ray;

"Crickets."

That will get you through the coming days and losses.

Sarasota 'cane

About the way he left UNC, Davis said the school went through “10 investigations” and never implicated him, adding he has a letter from the NCAA that says “I was not involved in anything that took place,” and that the school’s academic issues far predated him. He admitted it was “a bit of an albatross” because many don’t dig deeper than the headlines.

----------------------------------------------

First of all, I already said Butch was my #1 choice. I don't believe UM will hire him, but that's a different conversation.

That said, let's be honest here... Butch hasn't done anything of note since 2000. His UNC teams were good, not great. He hasn't coached in years, and hasn't coached at UM in even longer. Some things change over 15 years. I'm sure the kids in and around Miami are much different than the kids that were there 15-20 years ago.

Now, I am NOT saying I don't think Butch would do well here, but the automatic assumption that Butch is "clearly the best candidate" is a bit ridiculous, mainly because we don't even know who all is interested at this point. Hell, I never thought Smart would be, but apparently he is. I'm sure there's more that haven't been mentioned yet.

Oh, and I want nothing to do with Fuente. Looks like another Golden special to me.

It's got nothing to do with mental issues.
That post is 20% "told you so", 20% "you can't even see how stupid you are", 20% hurt pride and 40% "I'm so proud of those fancy words I use". For a while, it's quite funny.

Sarasota 'cane

I thought Kirby Smart was the front runner for the South Carolina job.

Lurker

Why don't you call out his cleverly worded pornography?

GoldenHomer

Lurker, no I am not a child I can read for myself. Thanks for the offer though. But no, I am not kidding you or anyone. Just don't see the need to say what you said.

Lurker

RCCF you are entitled to think whatever you want. I'm just stating that I believe in no uncertain terms that a mid-level contributor had absolutely nothing to do with getting him fired. I don't know of a single legit person that thinks that.

Yep, Kirby is a 3-4 guy who favors big linebackers.

j.w.

Butch could win here and start winning quickly. We need to get out in front of the crowd in terms of finding our guy, though. This whole wait until December attitude doesn't help, and reaffirms my belief that James isn't the right guy to make this hire. Hoping someone above him actually directs the search.

CaneRock

Smart would be an excellent hire, especially since He turned down other jobs to apprentice under Saban. Reminds me of a younger Butch.

Happy for all the players at The U to finally be able to play free and have fun again. There is a lot of talent there. We will be back soon!

Doesn't Kirby Smart run a 3-4 defense? I really would like to go to a 4-3!

Lurker

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | October 26, 2015 at 12:19 PM

Exactly!!!

Ohio_Cane

This is not a rebuild situation. Golden didn't leave the cupboard bare like Randy and Clappy did. This team needs coaching and maybe a couple more pieces.

Lurker

It's an attractive job. Might not pay like the top half of the SEC, but the location is awesome, other than the indoor practice facility (which we should have within the next couple of years) the facilities are vastly improved, you can get about 75% of your players within 1 to 2 hour drive, and you can win championships if you can coach, because you can get the talent easily.

We owe it to ourselves to examine all the options and try to pick the best one. That's how you do a winning employee search.

A question for the space... Do you think Butch still has the recipe for success at Miami? Do you think his same blueprint from the late 90's will work today? Not at all saying it wont, just wondering your opinions.

Dude on a Pale Horse

During his weekly radio segment with 790 The Ticket on Monday morning, former Hurricanes coach Butch Davis, 63, said he hopes the school considers him for its vacant coaching job and that he’s already put together a list of potential assistant coaches and coordinators to consider if he were hired.

^^^ Too late, Butch already started working.

Dude on a Pale Horse

K.

It didn’t take long for speculators to speculate that Butch Davis would return to Miami to replace Al Golden at The U. Now would be a good time to remember why Butch was fired at North Carolina

link

Yeah. I got nothing

It would seem that Butch was offered up to the NCAA gods as proof that UNC was weeding out the bad elements that had taken root at the University

Butch gone=Problem Solved!

How did that go?

For his part, Mr. Davis thinks he would make an excellent candidate

One former employer of mine with deep ties to UNC was quoted as saying that the day Butch was fired was “the worst day of his life”

(I kind of think more people should look at this guy. He’s having a pretty good year)

If they hurry up and hire Butch, the Heels will see him November 14th in Chapel Hill. Most likely, they’ll have to wait until 2017. Just imagine that: Butch Davis, wearing the colors of The U, strolling up and down the sideline at Kenan Stadium

You know, http://the house that Butch built expanded?

^^^ from a UNC site.

j.w.

He's still gone!!!!

There are plenty of articles out there about Butch where they say he's still waiting for the phone to ring, and in some he confirms it.
