El equipo de la Universida de Miami esta en FUEGO en Puerto Rico!
The University of Miami basketball team is on FIRE in Puerto Rico!
The people of PR are affectionately called "Boriquas". Why I do not know, but they make a food dish called Mofongo that is absolutely delicious.
Your UM basketball team, led by their "lighting in a bottle" coach Jim Larranaga put up over 100 points for the first time since 2009 in beating down Mississippi State like a badly behaved SEC step-child.
Sheldon McClellan scored 18 points to help Miami jump to a huge first-half lead on the way to a 105-79 win in Thursday's first round of the Puerto Rico Tipoff.
Ja'Quan Newton added 15 points for the Hurricanes(3-0), who led by 29 points before the break in a can't-miss opening 20 minutes. Miami made 17 of its first 21 shots, including a run of nine in a row, and used a 16-0 burst to blow the game open and quickly take all drama out of this one.
Miami shot 63 percent in the first half and tied the tournament single-half record with 59 points by the break, finishing at 57 percent shooting for the game.
It marked the first time the Hurricanes had scored at least 100 points against a Division I opponent since beating Savannah State 105-65 in January 2004. It was the first time they had scored 100 against any opponent since 2009, when fifth-year coach Jim Larranaga was still at George Mason.
James Palmer added 14 points and was one of seven Hurricanes players to score in double figures, while they also took a 41-27 rebounding advantage on an all-around dominating night.
Not a bad way to start the stay in San Juan for a veteran team picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
And if you question me, I'm just saying...mi hermanos, dame MOFONGO!
Boom.

Mofongo!

Mofongo (Spanish pronunciation: [moˈfoŋɡo]) is a fried plantain-based dish. It is typically made with fried green plantains mashed together in a pilón (wooden mortar and pestle), with broth, garlic, olive oil, and pork cracklings (Chicharrón) or bits of bacon. It can be filled with vegetables, chicken, crab, shrimp, or beef and is often served with fried meat and chicken broth soup.[1] Mofongo relleno is mofongo served with braised meat or seafood poured over it.

Have some mofongo. Utah will be a big test. Bring it and we'll be top 25, si?

Mofongo is an Afro-Puerto Rican dish that has clear roots in the west African Fufu. Fufu is made from various starchy vegetables and was introduced to the Caribbean by Africans in the Spanish New World colonies such as Cuba (fufu de plátano), Dominican Republic (mangú), and Puerto Rico (mofongo). Fufu consists of starchy root vegetables and plantains boiled then mashed until a dough-like consistency with water, butter, or milk.

Por supuesto, caballero
Posted by: Lur-ker | November 19, 2015 at 09:34 PM
It is also common in Puerto Rico to make mofongo with cassava (mofongo de yuca), taro and eddoe (mofongo de malanga y yautía), bread fruit (mofongo de pana), or a combination of cassava, ripe and green plantains (trifongo), ripe and unripe plantains (mofongo de amarillo).
Thanksgiving is an American holiday that has been adopted by Puerto Rico. Turkey is the main focus on every thanksgiving table and is traditional stuffed with bread. The traditional bread stuffing is replaced with mofongo de batata (plantain and sweet potato mofongo) in Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans homes outside the commonwealth.
Frito-Lay produces MoFongo Snax, a combined plantain chips, cassava chips and pork rinds into one bag.
Mofongo has become popular with Dominicans and have their own unique liking. Dominicans add queso frito (fried cheese) and replace the olive oil with butter. The plantains in making traditional mofongo are not always fried but boiled.

The Utes ("what exactly is a yout?" name that flick) took down TTU by 10 tonight in a hard fought game. Big game tomorrow for the U, with likely top 25 movement on the line. Regardless, it's still early in the season, and I just want to see this team continue to improve without putting too much pressure on themselves just yet. If they play to their potential and avoid the injury bug, there's no reason they can't be in the mix for winning their conference, imo.
FWIW, I see UH is looking to give Herman a raise to try and keep him there, I think at @ 3 million/season. I have trouble seeing him staying if he gets the right offer. Gotta wonder if Strong were to get fired whether Texas would make a run at him, and for a whole lot more than 3 million. I think what I miss most in U football coaches is the us vs. the world, it's a Cane thing mentality. I know the admin. wanted the opposite, but we got a decade+ of terrible football. Of course, Shannon's ban on players having guns I had no problem with at all.

Huh, an El Spaniol titled blog...a big win by our Cubano coach...I just had a piece of Pan Cubano...hmmmmm.
Posted by: CaneRock | November 19, 2015 at 09:53 PM
Herman is one of those guys though, that in the back of your mind, if you're hiring him, you hope he's not a flavor of the month type deal. I say that because he's only head coached, what? One or two years. I'd be thinking can he win over the long term.
We won't have to worry about him, though. That'll be USC, I think. According to what people are saying.
There's risk in whomever you hire.
Posted by: Lur-ker | November 19, 2015 at 09:54 PM
Agreed about the risk with any hire. This is what makes Butch popular, as there is a feeling of been there, done that already, and not somewhere else. 3 questions there are obvious: age, how he left the U and what did or didn't happen at UNC. I wouldn't mind the Mario hire IF he is part of a package with Butch as a coach in waiting, as a few more years of seasoning, getting to recruit and learning from Butch and Beelzebub Saban may truly have him ready.
Looking forward to Utes vs. U.

A my cousin Vinnie reference. Funny movie...

Really don't know jack about the Utes, except they're ranked 16.
It would be a wonderful statement to make to beat them.
Posted by: Lur-ker | November 19, 2015 at 10:15 PM
Scary:
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/14167601/devon-williams-new-mexico-lobos-ends-basketball-career-collapse
Nice hoops signing by the U obviously, but the UKy program just keeps on keeping on, signing 3 of the top 10 ranked guys for 2016 in the early signing period. Amazing. Money can't buy you love, but it can buy a whole lot that may be even better.
From the few minutes I got to watch of the Utah game, they did a pretty good job on the boards, especially offensively, but their longer range shooting was off. I don't know if this is a theme with them or just an off night. I think they ended with something like 25% from 3 point land. However, like we saw with the U last year, teams live and die by the 3 depending on how hot or cold the shooters are. It's amazing how much 3s have changed basketball, something that wasn't around in my playing days. I guess the best example would be the GS Warriors. Nail enough 3s, and even big men can become obsolete.
My Cousin Vinny is one of my all-time faves.

I saw part of the coverage on ESPN, it looked like there were 200 people there. Why have this tourney in PR?

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was hilarious...
Posted by: CoCane | November 19, 2015 at 11:25 PM
@Jcane, I ran into a die hard UM fan the other day and he said he did not want any part of Butch Davis because "he lied and then left" which to me seems ridiculous. LOL I wanted to tell him to take his big boy pill, but he is a customer of my boyfriend. Apparently it is some kind of sin to make an employment business decision and get a higher paying job. If I was offered a job, turned it down, told my employer I was not leaving (because at that particular time I wasn't) and then the next week or day or whatever the second job comes back with mad money, I would take it. Find it funny that some people still feel this way nearly 15 years ago.

Observations: Miami's recruiting has officially turned the corner
By Jon Rothstein | CBS Sports
November 19, 2015 11:49 am ET
Miami coach Jim Larranaga initially knew he had to build the Hurricanes' program unconventionally when he first got to Coral Gables, so he did. Miami took a pair of transfers in Angel Rodriguez and Sheldon McClellan that helped bridge things together after the Hurricanes lost five starters following the 2013 season that saw Miami win both the ACC regular-season and tournament titles while earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Hurricanes also took another key transfer in Kamari Murphy when he decided to leave Oklahoma State in 2014.
MORE RECRUITING
Complete recruiting coverage from 247Sports But now Miami is officially a player when it comes to recruiting the best high school players in the country. The Hurricanes received commitments from a pair of Top-30 2016 prospects on Wednesday in Bruce Brown and Dewan Huell. Both Brown and Huell were each courted by several power-five schools. These pledges now show that Larranaga can and will recruit the best players in the country from here moving forward. Miami had had several solid moments in recruiting over the past few years when it landed players like Davon Reed and Ja'Quan Newton, but neither of those commitments produced as big of a boom as Wednesday did. This is a significant development for this program.r

Because PR in late November is a really nice warm place to play three basketball games in as many days early in the season as anywhere else nearby CGNC?

### UM’s search firm, Korn Ferry, is meeting with school officials this week and is presenting them with a list of 40 potential candidates for the football coaching job, according to a school source. That list will be whittled down and interviews will follow.
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/2015/11/exploring-exasperating-dolphins-issues-including-tannehills-lack-of-freedom-on-audibles-um-coach-sea.html
My take: The coaching search will stretch into 2016. If they are looking at that many candidates, there will be quite a few they can't even contact or who will not respond before New Year's.

Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | November 20, 2015 at 06:34 AM
If Strong is fired without cause, His UT contract makes Him a pretty cheap hire for UM.
Should He be fired without cause, He's obligated to mitigate His contract up to 50%...so UM can pay Him as low as $2.5M per year. That's why UM is hoping He gets fired.
Posted by: CaneRock | November 20, 2015 at 06:51 AM
Crazy to think that perhaps our leading candidate is a guy the school is hoping gets fired because he isn't winning... with every resource possible. Got to love this admin.

Ask me 30 years from now how I feel about Ohio State. And I will tell you that the 2002 game was the reason why I feel that way. Some will NEVER forget Butch for leaving.
Posted by: raizecane | November 20, 2015 at 07:26 AM
Raize, I feel that it falls on the admin for not hiring a capable replacement or for possibly not ponying up enough shillings to keep him here.
As for Ohio State - that sucked. BUT we had a chance to win it and did not. I also feel that had McGahee not been knocked out of the game, we probably would have won it.
TGIF Everyone

IMO....Charlie Strong is an absolute "home run" hire!!! Look at the guys resume. Florida's defenses were dominate every single year he was coaching there. Louisville was a .500 ball club and he turned them around to a 11-2 & 12-1 season.
The recruiting would be insane if he's our coach. He's been recruiting South Florida his whole life and can relate to these kids. Can you imagine what he'll do with mostly South Florida kids on his roster!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | November 20, 2015 at 09:27 AM
^^^^^To be clear, I still want Butch!!!!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | November 20, 2015 at 09:29 AM
I dont think he is a home run, but he is starting to move up my list some. I don't see Texas firing him though unless they really bomb. Ive heard they are already inclined to give him another year. And while they have money, that is a lot of buyout money on top o paying someone else top dollar.
Posted by: UMike | November 20, 2015 at 09:32 AM
Even if Strong is fired, we would have to beat out South Carolina for him.....They will also go after him hard!
