This Date in Hurricanes History...Brought to you by the UM Sports Hall of Fame: UMSHoF member Gino Torretta becomes the 2nd Miami Hurricanes football player to be named the winner of the Heisman Trophy Award!
Torretta tallied 1400 points and 310 first place votes from the 985 selectors. He beat out San Diego State's Marshall Faulk, (1,080 pts.-164 1st place votes) and Georgia's Garrison Hearst (982-140) to join Vinny Testaverde as the only Miami Hurricanes to win the prestigious award!
He claimed the most total points in 4 of the 6 regions of the country, and was 2nd in the other 2 regions after consulting with Terrance (seen below) and his crew who may have influenced the vote just a little bit.
Gino Torretta was the most celebrated football player in the University of Miami and NCAA history. A 1991 graduate with a degree in Business Management, Torretta won both athletic and academic awards during his prolific career as a Hurricane.
He became only the second player in Hurricane history to win the coveted Heisman Trophy Award as the nation’s top collegiate football player. He was also honored as the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s Player of the Year.
The Associated Press, Kodak, Walter Camp and The Football News named Torretta first-team All-American. He also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, The Maxwell Trophy and the Davey O’Brien quarterback awards. And winning those major National awards is no cow manure, I'm just saying.
Torretta was a unanimous selection as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the year for two straight seasons, the NCAA Today’s Top Six Award winner, Toyota Leadership Award winner and Chevrolet Offensive Player of the Year.
Torretta finished his Miami career with eleven school passing records, including career attempts (991), completions (555), yards (7,690), total offense (7,772), longest pass (99 yards to Horace Copeland vs. Arkansas, an NCAA record) and most passing yards in a game (485 vs. San Diego State).
He was tapped into Iron Arrow, considered the highest honor at the university. He has also been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Orange Bowl Hall of Honor and was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2003!

I met with the Booker T QB at the state title games in Orlando, Coach Richt is going to be a big hit with the kids in SFLA. He says the UM name is still the dream school of most of the kids down in SFLA, he is a great kid by the way, great family which i met his dad. He says he will play QB in college, i was asking him about how kids like Treon might be better suited for college at another position and if meant getting an offer to a place like the U would he consider switching positions but he was steadfast on staying at QB. WIth that said he is a freshman and abotu 5'11 so if he can grow about 3 inches he is good to go.

No hoops action until 12/19 until we get the College of Charleston. Can't go to sleep on them, as they are a solid team that has wins vs. Navy, ECU and LSU, along with wins vs. some lesser name schools and a few losses, although Davidson is typically pretty solid. Can't take a day off like happened in the trap game after the huge PR tnmt win when playing Northeastern. They won't be able to complain of tiredness or lack of prep time though...
Looking forward to see if any other commits happen for Coach R this weekend. As was already said, I'd expect a few more tradeups for this year's class before all is said and done in early Feb.

Again, tears shed in the locker room when Richt told his team he would not coach the bowl game. The senior speech dedicated to Mark Richt. Clearly, the love and genuine-ness Richt showed his players are evident. This is the guy you want to coach your son.Richt is loved and respected by his players. I don't think any players will shed a tear for Golden (except tears of joy as one blogger astutely pointed out), and no senior will deliver this kind of tribute to Golden.
I give kudos to Blake James. He made great choices to hire Scott as interim coach, and then Richt as HC.

Dem Canes!!!

What's good Legion/Canespace? I like the Mark Richt hire and think he will definitely improve the productivity of the offense. Nevertheless, I would love to see the U return back to the physical U on the defensive side of the ball. Probably the most important hire Richt is going to make is hiring the defensive coordinator. As much as I hate to say it; Alabama and Ohio State made great moves this week filing their D Coordinator positions. Enjoy your Sunday.

Mark Richt says Miami Hurticanes are a sleeping giant.
Damn right!
Good lord, what an upgrade we just got on coaching. Unbelievable.
Have to give credit to the way he jumped out on the recruiting trail - the guy was pumped. Some were saying he looked too "low-energy" - I believe even here. Had anyone seen his pictures from when he's been recruiting? Looks pumped and cool/relaxed at the same time.
BJ hit it out of the park.

Alex D - how are YOU??
Posted by: CGNC | December 13, 2015 at 10:00 AM
I have had a chance to see many of the recruits on the defensive side play HS football this season, and I have even had the pleasure of seeing one play basketball, and they appear to have the potential to be the kind of attacking defenders that Richt says he wants. I sense a very good class for Richt all around.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | December 13, 2015 at 10:01 AM
Richt said he honestly believes Miami is “a sleeping giant.” And he clearly believes he’s the man to awaken it. His ability to recruit South Florida was formidable at Georgia. The thinking is he’ll be extremely tough to beat as an in-state resident.

That Florida Gators team that the Canes beat by double digits gave the #1 MSU team a tough game. It proves that the Canes beat a very good team, and the Canes are capable of beating anyone. Of course the Northeastern loss shows they can loose when they loose their focus, but Coach L will not let that happen again. I think the Canes will be a top 10 team by next month
