Senior Angel Rodriguez hit three 3-pointers and added a career-high 11 assists to help No. 15 Miami beat No. 24 Duke 80-69 Monday night, the Blue Devils' fourth loss in five games.
Rodriguez scored 13 points for the Hurricanes, who led for the final 24 minutes. Sheldon McClellan scored 21 points and benefited from Rodriguez's most spectacular assist late in the game. Brandon Ingram led Duke with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Grayson Allen added 17 points but shot just 6 for 17.
Miami (16-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat a ranked team for the third time this season, and won by double digits for the 15th time.
Rodriguez came into the game 4 for 30 from 3-point range in league games but went 3 for 5 from beyond the arc in the first half to help Miami take the lead for good.
His best play earned a late assist. Duke (15-6, 4-4) was mounting a rally when Rodriguez dribbled quickly through the defense in transition and tossed an alley-oop pass on the run to McClellan for a dunk and a 64-55 lead.
Tonye Jekiri, Miami's 7-foot center, contributed assists from the perimeter on consecutive possessions to keep a cushion down the stretch. McClellan scored six points in the final 2 minutes.
Duke came into the game ranked fifth in the nation in scoring at 85.7 points but continued a recent offensive slump. They shot only 42 percent and went 6 for 20 from 3-point range.
The Blue Devils missed nine consecutive shots, including five in one possession, during an 8-1 Hurricanes run that put them ahead 45-35.
The Hurricanes' man-to-man defense didn't let Duke get to the free throw line much, either. The Blue Devils average nearly 26 free throws a game but went just 13 for 17.
Ja'Quan Newton scored 15 points to help Miami's bench outscore Duke's 21-7. Davon Reed added 14 points, and Jekiri had 10 rebounds, six offensive.
McTen Balling Boy! Sheldon McClellan is clearly our best and most important player. Best to believe that Jack. Go Canes! Beat NC State!

The basketball team has been known to play up or down to the competition in recent years. I think that's still the case with this year's squad, but so far, they've found ways to win these battles. Only three losses at this point of the season and three wins against ranked teams is impressive.
And Coach L is one of the best, a pure winner.

That duke team is one of the worst in 20 years.
Of course the only home loss the Champs took last season was by the Pimp's stable so even with that fact better blue chips for the league's de facto direction setter wouldn't have changed the outcome.

Coach L's decision to stick with Angel R. as the starting PG paid off against Duke. You can see the experience of a 5-year senior pay off against a less experienced Duke squad. AR isn't always as consistent as we would like, but when he is on, his passing and quickness helps take the Canes to another level. "Newton is the best sixth man in college basketball," according to Dicky V, and next season he will be a top point guard. It benefits the Canes to have two great PGs, with different skill sets contributing at a high level. Coach L knows what he is doing.
Also, I love to see the Canes play with defensive intensity. When they do, they are a different kind of team

CMR is scrambling, and I like some of the recruits they have identified and are going after.
I don't like what I am hearing about Byrd, but in the end, I think he will realize his best chance to win a championship and make it to the league is here in Coral Gables. Coach Scott will not coach your position, and he is a used car salesman.
Knoxville has to beat Athens and Gainesville every year just to get to the SEC championship game, and they fail every year because they don't have enough talent. CMR will win 10 or more games next year, and there will be a steady procession of NFL picks coming from the U. Butch Jones will loose 3 or more SEC games, and Tennessee will have an NFL pick here or there, but will not compare with the U.

Our next DL commit may be Tyreic Martin. Kool was recruiting him to Mizzou and he's lost 2 DL coaches since he committed. Most recent was a guy they replaced Kool with, who took job with the Eagles.

Incredible run they're having .... winning 9 straight. If they can keep it up there's a good chance they'll get past Napoli to claim first place in Serie A and make some noise in the Champions League as well. Bayern, however, will be a tough out in the round of 16.

### This is one of the types of subplots that makes sports so interesting: Most recruiting services say the best recruit in this UM class is cornerback Tyler Byrd. And who’s the person charged with taking him away from Miami?
Larry Scott, Miami’s interim coach for the final six games last season. Scott, now Tennessee’s tight ends coach, has been courting Byrd, and Byrd has agreed to take a visit to Knoxville this week. Tennessee began pursuing Byrd vigorously after Scott joined the staff, not a coincidence.
Based on what Byrd has said, Scott apparently isn’t doing any negative-recruiting against Miami. That’s not surprising; Scott is a classy guy.
Another factor that has UM feeling a bit anxious: Byrd lives with Volunteer running back commit Carlin Fils-aime and considers him a brother. Fils-aime has been committed to the Vols since July and will join Byrd in Knoxville this weekend.
UM must hope that Byrd doesn’t fall in love with the Tennessee coaching staff and the UT campus this weekend. Byrd has said Tennessee has a lot of ground to cover to reach Miami’s level in his eyes.
### UM, with no offensive linemen committed, learned this week that four-star guard Johncarlo Valentin canceled his visit to UM this weekend. But according to Canesport, three-star Orlando-based Tre Johnson (an Illinois commit) will visit.
### UM lost out on Virginia-based three-star defensive back J.J. Givens, who picked N.C. State today.
### New receivers coach Ron Dugans, appearing on WQAM’s Hurricane Hotline with Joe Zagacki and Don Bailey, said Stacy Coley made a “great decision” coming back to school and “is going to be a great leader…. Lawrence Cager has done a great job. Braxton Berrios has done a really good job. Darrell Langham has talent.”…. In recruiting, he said he’s looking for toughness at his position: “They’ve already called us prima donnas at that position.”…. Dugans previously coached the Dolphins’ DeVante Parker at Louisville and said: “Everything you threw his way, he was going to snag it. I’m excited for the kid. I know how hard he’s worked.”
### New UM cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph, the only former Canes player on the assistant coaching staff (besides head coach Mark Richt, obviously), said on Hurricane Hotline than UM will play “a good amount of man to man. It’s going to look like we’re doing something but not.” (In other words, disguising.) He said that’s what NFL top five defenses do.
Rumph said he likes “long corners, anyone similar to me. There’s tremendous support for our corners. We’re not going to leave you on an island 90 percent of the time.”
### Rumph said defensive coordinator Manny Diaz has emphasized what others before him have said about recruiting: “Coach Diaz wants to lock down South Florida… I feel like no one is going to tell me no… Who’s going to tell me no?”
---------------------------------
^^ We did NOT "lose out" on JJ Givens. He wasn't a take. Staff feels confident getting at least 1 of with Finley and/or Miller

Well, I hope that's not it. You wouldn't want a coach to be beefing with the kid on social media. Wouldn't be smart. Can't believe that Richt would approve of that. I'm hoping it's something else.

DT Tyreic Martin (I expect him to commit)
OT Tre Johnson (I expect him to commit)

Ohio or Mike what's your call on Byrd?
Posted by: Lur-ker | January 28, 2016 at 10:10 AM
One key commit that Miami will be monitoring over the final weekend before National Signing Day is cornerback Tyler Byrd.
Byrd is giving Tennessee a look because his teammate, running back Carlin Fils-Aime, is committed there and the two have a close relationship.
The relationship between Fils-Aime and Byrd is closer than a friendship. The two are like brothers. They have lived together for the last few years and are extremely close.
Early in the recruiting process, Fils-Aime hoped he could join Byrd at Miami, but the Hurricanes never showed significant interest. Tennessee, now, is doing their best of selling the opportunity of the two friends continuing their playing career together in Knoxville.
With that being said, Byrd is very high on Miami. He has a great respect for the program, impressed by the academics that UM can offer, and a big factor weighing in Miami’s favor is that the school is a two hour drive away from home. Byrd wants his family to be able to come to his games.
Beyond that, Miami has a legitimate big need for Byrd and that has been illustrated by the manner that Mark Richt has recruited him. Once the NCAA dead period ended, Byrd was the first recruit that Richt visited. Richt believes that Byrd is the most important commit that the Hurricanes need to keep in the class.
Miami returns starting cornerback Corn Elder, a rising senior, this season and beyond that they have four cornerbacks returning that will fight for the remaining playing time. The Hurricanes need a true freshman to come in and compete for immediate playing time and Byrd was identified as that player in the 2016 class.
The path to early playing time at Tennessee won't be as smooth as the Volunteers are returning their top three cornerbacks. Tennessee is also adding early enrollees Marquill Osborne and JUCO transfer D.J. Henderson this semester. Tennessee is also considered the favorite to land top 50 prospect Nigel Warrior on National Signing Day. With that being said, Byrd would be in line to compete for playing time in his second season at UT.
While Tennessee does have a lot of momentum and excitement with Byrd right now, Miami is hopeful that once his visit to Knoxville is over he will take a step back and not get caught up in that hype. Miami presents an opportunity to be a three or four year starter and Byrd understands that. The Hurricanes also present an option that allows his family and friends to come to all of his home games.
Byrd is expecting Miami cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph and safeties coach Ephraim Banda to visit today and UM will look to sell themselves before he makes his trip to Tennessee.

I think he sticks, but UT visit with his "brother" does worry me a bit.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 28, 2016 at 10:18 AM
Also, based on recruiting rules, when UT came to the house, they obviously met with both, does that count as the in-home visit for one and not the other, meaning they can get 2 in-home in one week?
Does Carlin Fils-aime live with Byrd's family or does Bryd live with the Fils-aime? Doesn't matter, just wondering.
How is the convo between Carlin Fils-aime and Richt when he is there to see Bryd?
Really hope Byrd sticks!
